20 Exceptional Restaurants in Bend, Oregon

"In a Mountain View development on Cushing Drive, Chao Lay celebrates the cuisine of its namesake, the Indonesian migrant fishing community living on the Thai island of Koh Lipe. Chef Prang Rothenberger grew up on Koh Lipe, and meals at Chao Lay incorporate the eclectic nature of the nomadic community’s culinary identity — meals may start with satay or crispy fried pork belly, before transitioning to khao man gai or whole fried trout garnished with fried garlic. The nom jin, a curry noodle soup with chicken and cucumbers, is a particular standout, brightened with the addition of pickled vegetables." - Barb Gonzalez, Jeffrey Stull

Loved the food at Chao Lay. We traveled to Crater Lake and stopped by Bend for food. The food was so tasty and authentic. The lady owner was so sweet and even made us a custom dish. Highly recommend the crispy pork belly (the sauce was so good) and the kao man kai, which was also really good with ginger sauce and soup. Please stop by if you are local or visiting Bend. They also have a great selection of beverages. Service was excellent as well!

Google
Delicious flavors and high quality ingredients! I ordered Kao Mon Gai (chicken+rice), Nom Jin (red curry noodle bowl), and the handmade potstickers for delivery. Would recommend all three dishes! They packaged everything really well, so it was still great at home. I’m Asian and have traveled a lot on SE Asia- highly recommend! Will definitely be ordering again!

Google
A terrific new Asian fusion in Bend. A cozy menu of dishes with authentic flavor and fresh ingredients. Ample indoor and heated outdoor seating. Staff was friendly and helpful at counter service. Prices as expected. Ample parking and complimentary restaurants nearby.

Google
Service was exceptional, flavor was great, prices were expected for the area. We would definitely come back. Many GF options.

Google
Disappointing. Waited over an hour for our food. We were told there would be a 20 minute wait, which we were fine with. But over an hour? Changed our order from dine in, to take out annnnd when we finally were given our order- after asking about it- it was wrong. Hopefully someone enjoyed what we ordered because we weren’t able to. They gave us a $15 gift card, but for what we went through and the underwhelming food we received and tried- no protein in the curry and no sauce for the noodle dish, which again wasn’t what we ordered- the quality of food wasn’t worth it. And didn’t surprise me after trying it. Dumplings were fine. Overall, won’t be going back.

Google
What a wonderful treat in refreshing foods from Asia in such a convenient spot. Everything is good. Nothing too spicy, all really delicious flavors. Fresh! Fresh! Fresh! Just enjoyed my leftovers. Thanks so much!

Google
Wry lovely tasting food. They easily dialed down the spice level for me and I had an amazing dish. Don’t miss this hidden gem.

We moved to Central Oregon from Portland, OR and have favorite Thai, Vietnamese and unique Chinese restaurants we favored. This is the best we've had this side of the Cascade Range. Some heat, if you like it. Flavorful. The juice from the dishes are good enough to slurp up and not leave a drop.

Yelp
Do you want real deal authentic Thai food? Chao Lay is what you want. Thai fusion? Check! THIS Pan Asian restaurant should not be missed!

Yelp
Solid Asian fusion place brought to you by the owners of ThAiPAS, the Thai place at the Grove. Small(ish) menu. I ordered the Kee Mao Gung and satay skewers. The KMG is solid although not particularly spicy as advertised. I thought the satay was a bit bland. They could kick that up a notch. Nice space that was formerly (and briefly) occupied by Bangers and Brews East, and across from Hablo Tacos. So they have that nice sheltered center space between the two restaurants that is good for winter dining. Inside seating is fine too. Beer and (probably, I didn't check) wine available. Reasonable prices.

Yelp
Run don't walk to try this delicious Asian fusion restaurant. The food is perfection in a casual dining atmosphere. They serve beer, wine and cider as well.

Yelp
SO good! Saw this restaurant featured on Central Oregon news and had to try it. So delicious. Authentic Thai goodness. Family owned. Highly recommend this place. Good and service was excellent.

Yelp
Not bad, not bad at all. I was excited to try this place and after having dinner there recently, I'm looking forward to trying more of their dishes. I ordered the pork belly appetizer and the curry noodles-both dishes were excellent. I wouldn't mind having the option to get the noodle bowl with rice instead of noodles, but is a great dish as is. Slightly spicy but nothing too fiery unless you hate heat. And the chicken was SO tender. And the pork belly, yum: nicely crispy on the outside and tender on the inside with a tangy-but-not-too-sweet tamarind dipping sauce. The service is just a little bit awkward; my pork belly appetizer arrived about 10 minutes after my entree (if not for that I would give this place one more star) but they are a brand new restaurant, things happen. All in all I recommend this place

Yelp
This restaurant has generally good reviews so we decided to give it a try (takeout). Kind of disappointing. Pork belly noodles was basically noodles, broth and fatty inedible pork. Vermicelli bowl was basically just that ... noodles. On the bright side, the red curry with chicken was pretty tasty.

Yelp
Second visit to this place today. First visit was a quick stop to try the place out and just an order of their Goyza and based on those I had to go back for more. Today was the Nom Jin Red Curry, great dish and plenty to eat. Excellent red curry flavor and just the right amount of spice. Can't wait for my next visit

Yelp
We ordered to-go on a Saturday. Everything was packed well and still hot! As a Vietnamese woman, this is the exactly what I needed living in Bend. I am so thankful and grateful to have this restaurant near me. The food was so authentic and reminded me of what my mom will serve me after school. The nuoc mam served with the whole fried fish was perfect. I'm glad they allowed different levels of spice and included multiple sauces and side. The chicken and rice were an all star dish. The Korean bbq bowl is exactly how my mom would stir fry beef and onions. The gochujang was spicy and not overly sweet. The soup served was a hit of nostalgia and so comforting. This was perfect and will be a regular rotation for me.

Yelp
The noodles had a mushier texture than I prefer, and the garnish was on the lighter side, but overall, the dish was remarkably enjoyable, boasting a delightful freshness.

Yelp
I had lunch at Chao Lay on Monday with a friend and had the Red Curry....omg - it was delicious and I even had shrimp added and there were 5 large shrimp. I went home and raved about it to my husband and we went there on Tuesday so he could try it. He said "it's haunting".....So good

Yelp
Wow, this place knocked it out of the park. The food was excellent and really reminds me of Asian street food. The service was good with counter service and self bussing. The ambiance was nice with self seating and indoor/outdoor concept depending on what you're looking for. This is a great addition to Bend's ever expanding restaurant scene.

Yelp
Absolutely brilliant Thai food. Been there, learned to make many dishes myself, and been to all the Thai restaurants in Bend. Prang has the touch. Crispy separately fried basil leaves on the Pad Kee Mao was the crowning touch. Can't wait to go again!

Yelp
Delicious fusion with wonderful service! Lots of options. Pork belly is so yummy! Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
I've been eager to try this little gem and I was amazed by the quality of the food we had! If you like fried fish you'll be sure to love the one they serve here. It's been in my sights since they released it on their menu and it did not disappoint! The yum shrimp was my second favorite as it was reminiscent of a ceviche with an Asian twist, light and refreshing. The restaurant is counter service based, which we weren't expecting, but the menu is displayed on a big sign at the entrance, making it easy to read and order. Cozy and quaint indoor seating but they had more room available shared with the buildings next door (would be great when summer comes). Not to mention the friendly and accommodating staff; greeting us at the door, answering all our questions, and making sure our meal was exceptional! I will definitely be back for the fish and to try more of their menu soon!

Yelp
The food tasted so fresh! I also really appreciated the service from the cook. She came over, asked how the food was and she gave me some extra hot sauce as well. I usually like my food on the spicier side. The atmosphere was very laid back and it I really enjoyed taking my wife out to eat there. I hope to return soon!

Yelp
Every single bite of every thing we ordered (and we ordered most of the menu) was just delicious! We couldn't get over how perfect this was!

Yelp
Please ignore the bad reviews on here. Most of them are related to staffing issues which almost every business in every industry is having right now. The food is incredible and unique and the people working there are amazing! We've called in big work orders with 8-15 entrees and they prepare them all within 20-25 minutes and each one is delicious and perfect. I ate here 4 times within the first week and a half they were open and not a single time was I disappointed. Please try them out and support a good local business!

Sarah P.

Yelp
Great food and amazing customer service! My favorite dish to order is the Pad Thai with wide noodles. 10/10 recommend!

Brenna V.

Yelp
Didn't receive my order. Wasn't a door dash issue because everything showed up in the door dash account; the restaurant just didn't punch the ticket in correctly and only showed two orders. What did show up was unseasoned and not very good. Do not recommend.

Patty W.

Yelp
We had a wonderful meal at Chao Lay last night. We shared three appetizers; the Goyza Potstickers and the Shrimp Yum were outstanding, and the Gai Satay (chicken skewers) were really good. For main dishes we had the Kee Mao Gung (spicy noodles with shrimp), Korean Beef Bowl and the Glass Noodles (with tofu). The Mao Gung and the Korean Beef were the winners. Service was great and the owner very friendly. We will be back for sure to try even more of the menu!

Yelp
Had dinner here last night with my wife for the first time (restaurant is new to this location). Have been needing this type of restaurant on close by for a while. Food was tasty (Spicy Noodles and Asian chicken salad) and fast. Service was excellent. I'd recommend supporting this restaurant so it doesn't become another ghost of restaurants past in Bend.

Brad S.

Yelp
Service was excellent. Crispy pork belly was amazing! Korean beef was not as good as I expected it to be and would probably not get again. Excited to try other things on menu.

Yelp
We ordered 3 things and shared everything including the potstickers, spicy noodles, and chicken curry. The potstickers were delicious they had tons of flavor and a good amount of filling. I love spicy and the noodles were SPICY! The service was friendly, fast, and helpful! It's pretty tiny, but we sat outside and enjoyed it.

Aaron K.

Yelp
Very very good and staff was so friendly. Best potstickers in Bend. Loved the noodle curry dish

Margaret P.

Yelp
Good food, very flavorful. Pork belly miso ramen is delicious! Quick service also a big plus.

Yelp
Call for hours- Website didn't have any posted hours, nor did yelp. Other online places indicated 7 days/week. Walked all the way there...CLOSED. UPDATE: we went on a day when they were open (confirmed with a call). Small menu, but all we had was good. Ended up with leftovers. Order at the counter/bus your own table. Requested a thai ice tea, which they did not carry. The server did say that they would be adding items/adjusting the menu as the business developed. Definitely a casual restaurant.

Derek M.

Yelp
Attentive and friendly service. Not a large menu but a nice array of dishes that can be ordered as vegetarian. Started with a basic dish of Thai Red Curry Bowl which was pleasantly spiced with a good amount of bell peppers and tofu. The curry broth was well balanced and not at all sweet, which I prefer. Lemongrass and red pepper were noticeable and the tofu was spongy yet bouyant and absorbed quit a bit of flavor from the curry. An ample service of rice was provided on the side. The meal was very filling despite initial impressions and, if not completely hungry, could serve as two meals.

jessica w.

Yelp
I ordered the Kai Mon Gai and the curry sauce was absolutely delicious. Sydney was our server and she was very sweet, helpful and attentive. I would definitely recommend!

Simon K.

Yelp
The food here is amazing and really enjoyed the food. Costumer service was the best experience I had and they really care about it. I had Kee Mao spicy Noodles they were amazing here and I will come back.

Regan D.

Yelp
Lol don't listen to Karen (I mean who asks for a tip back.lol). This place was better than I expected.

Maureen H.

Yelp
Thought we'd give this new restaurant a try and it didn't disappoint! The Asian flavored food was spot on. The service was prompt and the furniture is trendy.

Monty K.

Yelp
Bad first impression when the first words are "we charge a few if you use your credit card"

Mary F.

Yelp
And to top it off, they said they'd give my money back for food I DIDNT get and they didn't so now I have to drive 20 miles to go there to get my money that they took. Luckily I saved the receipt. I won't ever return to this place
