Chao Long Thang Mo

I had not been to this restaurant for three years. I used to come here for porridge soup. The porridge soup used to taste alright, but not anymore. The porridge was so watery and lacked flavor. I was introducing this restaurant to my friend, and we came here for a late lunch. The porridge wasn't good at all, and my friend did not like it. I won't recommend this restaurant to anyone anymore.

Came in around 12:30pm after a haircut. It was only me and another guest. Ordered the small chao long, which was a pretty decent portion, along with a side of fried doughnut. Food was delicious, and definitely fixed my craving. Not sure if it’s normally dead in there, but hoping that they get more guests. The young girl who took my order and the aunties working the shop were all so nice.

I read good reviews on Google so I decided to come here. When my grp walked in, not even a greeting or hi from them. There’s 2 ladies there, 1 old and 1 younger one. The younger one is so rude and mean. She talked back to customer. My mom just asked her for a cup of warm water instead of iced water, she responded” từ từ “. My mom not even rushed her or anything, just asked nicely and that’s how she responded. Then my sister asked for satay ,again, she responded with a attitude” nothing here to eat with satay”. The cháo lòng and bánh canh aren’t that good, not flavorful as they supposed to be. Is this the right way to run a business? Bad customer service, bad attitude, the food isn’t that good as reviewed

Good tasty Chao. I found them pretty expensive for a small veggies bowl. I paid $8. Will hope to come back for banh canh. I tried the banh canh the next day. I gave another star for the taste!

I'm a huge fan of places that specialized in just 1 or 2 dishes. Excellent Cháo (Congee) with the crispy fried dough. We also had the Bánh Canh Hue, I have not seen this dish outside of Hue, Vietnam it's really tasty as well. It can be a little intimidating from the outside of this hole in the wall joint with Vietnamese only menu, but if you're adventurous I'd recommend this unique authentic joint.

Went back here for the second time. The food was good, but the service was horrible. The lady was being very rude and pushy. Will not go here again. Sorry!

Price is very reasonable for the amount of food. Definitely good home-cooked Vietnamese comfort food.

I ordered the chao long and it was delicious. The old man in the front greeted me and the place has a homey feeling. The lady who took my order was very nice.

4/5 stars for banh canh . Yellow egg drop color with thick udon noodles , shrimp crab meatballs with Chinese donuts bread. Wasnt fan of the rice porridge soup.

The restaurant is comfortable and the staff is friendly. The Vietnamese pork porridge Chao Long is relatively thin, with various pork intestines, blood sausage, pig blood, and occasionally a little pig heart and liver, accompanied by coriander, chopped green onions and fried onions. You can also order a fried dough stick to eat with the porridge. It tastes good. I will come again next time.

Extremely delicious Vietnamese cuisine. The Chao was the one of the best I have ever had, next to my mothers. It was so packed with flavor and genuinely amazing to eat. The service was super quick and fast. The restaurant was chill and gave a good comfy vibe. Loved eating here!

This business is family run. Friendly, nice family staffs. Food is tastefully. Special in "rice pork congee gumbo" is the best memu.

I went there today 12/29/20245 and ordered two large Chao long for around $23 plus tax. I ate one at the restaurant and the other for my wife at home. Both of them are so bad since the Chao virtually had no meat at all, and they were just broth and MSG. This will be the last time I come over to this restaurant.

I came here twice back to back because I love the crawfish here. If you order 5 lbs and up, the price is $6.99/lbs and they give corns and sausages. For 5 lbs, two people can finish. I love the service here. The owner and his familly are so friendly. They serve everything on point. In fact, I can call in and pre-order then come and voila, the food is here. I'm so surprise that they trust phone calls like that. What if I call and don't show up? Anyway, unfortunately, I don't live in Houston but with the 4-day visit here. I stopped by twice because I love the chill atmosphere here. Sometimes, I'm tired of going to fancy and classy restaurant. This restaurant gives me a mundane feeling.

So you used to say au revoir when I was leaving, but lately I've been saying Ciao. I notice you say Ciao too. have you been saying Ciao Long? They basically sell just one thing which is the title of the restaurant - Chao Long - and my question is chow long has this been going on? They make the best version of the dish I've ever had even though I've only ever had it maybe five times. Further evidence that Houston is the best place for Vietnamese food because it's so good and so authentic that it's the only place I will get this now, and I'm talking about anywhere in the country.

the waitress was not too friendly. we got served after the couple came after us. i came here because of recommendations on fb. they only serve banh canh and chao long. i had banh canh and it was okay, nothing really special. the place was quiet that we can hear everything, just kinda awkward, no music no tv ..nothing . with the lady attitude ( mean and rude) i wont be back here again.

Soup too watery. And salty . The lady is doesn't have good service attitude . Soup not smell good

This restaurant has the best chao around Houston, but then Houston doesn't have a lot of Vietnamese congee place lol. We always go to Chao Thang Mo when I'm craving chao and Banh canh. This is a hole in the wall family owned and operated restaurant. When you go in, they will ask what do you want to order without giving a menu because they only have two types of food. Anyways, highly recommend this place for chao and banh canh. They also have seasonal crawfish

seafood noodle, taste great! Crab meat, egg, shrimp, mushroom and some kind of fish tofu. Recommend!

Not sure why I bother to write this review because the type of people that go here usually don't read reviews. Ok, enough with the stereotypes, if you're trying to expand your Vietnamese food knowledge, I highly encourage that. The rice porridge is served with pork organs - a popular street food in Vietnam. Their prices are very low and the taste is very authentic. If anything, I think they are more on the good side with less salt than the traditional street food bowl. Vibe: be prepared to sit in a cramped space with the Vietnamese news blasting on TV. Def not a place to impress a date.

This eatery is a small hole-in-the-wall establishment located in a rather dinghy strip mall across the street from the ARVN memorial monument in Houston's Little Saigon. The eatery itself is rather modest, with a few old tables and a refrigerated cooler with cans of drinks. The menu here is written only in Vietnamese, but is very simple, as it contains only two menu items: Chao Long (Offal Porridge) and Banh Canh (Udon). There are options for extra plates of offal (Them Dia Long) or fried flour sticks (Dau Cheo Quay) with your main meal, and the bottom portion of the menu allows for patrons to order large family-sized portions of porridge or udon (bring your own pot!) There was a banner outside touting crawfish but I assume it is a seasonal offering. I ordered a large bowl of Chao Long with a side of Dau Cheo Quay and a glass of water. The food was already prepared and came out steaming hot, along with a plate of bean sprouts and lime for texture and flavor. For the uninitiated, Chao Long is a rice porridge that contains pork offal--organ meats. That said, the Chao Long at Thang Mo contains a generous amount of liver, tongue, heart, blood sausage, intestine, blood cubes, and uterus. The Chao Long was very flavorful, although some pepper made a difference. The Dau Cheo Quay was cut up into 1" cubes and added a crunchy texture to the thin soup-like porridge. The service was simple--it appears to be a mom-and-pop operation with a simple menu. The older lady took my order and she was overall courteous and friendly. They appear to be a cash-only operation but I have noticed other reviews mentioned this eatery accepts credit. While I was there, I noticed many people come in with big pots to fill up on porridge, so it appears to be a popular option to purchase for the whole family--this could also be a result of flu season, in which porridge has the same therapeutic effects as chicken soup! Overall, Chao Long Thang Mo is a good, out-of-the-way establishment that concentrates on only a couple of menu items--which they do well with. Likely I will return if I ever have another opportunity to be in the Houston area in the early mornings, which is the best time to have a bowl of Offal Porridge!

I've been to Houston probably 3 or 4 times now. I always try to come here when I'm in town. The Chao is very good and fresh. It's nice to have a mom and pop store like this around. The Chao is very cheap. The older gentleman is very nice and sweet, but I've met the younger gentleman before and he was very rude. He was talking about me right in front of my face thinking I do not speak Vietnamese. He told the older gentleman why seat me at the front table for. I should move somewhere else. He seemed very irritated that I sat right in front of him. Service could be better. The younger gentleman needs to learn some manners if he wants to take over the family business.

Good porridge and dipping sauce. 100% recommended it. Would go back again for more chao

I remember this place having some of the best rice porridge ever!! Seems to have changed a bit, or maybe I got it on a day the porridge was thick yet!! Service is minimal here, do your studying and know what ya want! I need to come back and try the seafood udon to see if it's still delicious. It's a very small business that been around for at least/almost 10 years! It's not the cleanest place, so let's say the ambiance is very chill bare necessities and someone's uncle might yell at you!!

Finally had an opportunity to try this place out after hearing my friends talk about it for so many times. Definitely a place you should visit for some piping hot Vietnamese congee/rice soup on a rainy day! The soup was done right, very flavorful. The mixed innards were well cooked as well, especially the blood sausage. They also provided dipping sauce, either ginger fish sauce or shrimp paste. We like to eat fried dough with rice soup, so we also got that as well. If you go with a group of 2-3+ people, might as well order a plate of the innards to share :) As a bonus to our meal, we were treated to some acoustic guitar music played by the waiter as well. My sister said she never encountered that in her previous visits, so I guess it was a lucky day for me!

This place was beyond sketchy and frankly quite unappetizing. It's located in a random broken down plaza on bellaire so hidden that I missed it the first time around. As we walked in, the restaurant itself smells funky like someone has been smoking a crap load of cigs in it. It's a small mom & pop shop so I was hoping it would be amazing but it was disappointing! The congee (chao) itself was dark and gloomy.. Flavorless. The rice porridge itself wasn't cooked long enough so it didn't go down smoothly. The crab udon wasn't bad but it was super gunky. Probably over did it with the corn starch slurry. Soooooo let's talk about how sticky everything was! The chopsticks, spoons, tables and chairs! My elbows were stuck to the table and so was my bum to the chair. I had to wipe everything down and it still was super sticky! With that said, I ordered a can drink to avoid any sticky dirty cups but there was a hair on my soy bean drink.. utterly disgusted. Literally wiped down everything and I still couldn't force myself to eat. Never again!

If you are in town and want a authentic Vietnamese "Cháo Lòng " this is the place of Texas, not only Houston.

they changed owner and chao long no longer good, not that tasty anymore and abit watery. i dnt recommend banh canh hue tho but can come back for chao long

Came here on a rainy day because we were craving something warm and comforting. Although I've never tried Vietnamese porridge before, this place hit the spot! When we sat down, the lady quickly realized we didn't speak Vietnamese and helped us in English instead. She was so kind and friendly! We got their porridge with a side of fried donuts and wow!! The porridge was not bland like Chinese congee, but instead full of flavor and a variety of meats. Their fried donuts are SO good! I would say it's the best I have had in Houston, it's just so buttery, crispy and perfect for dipping in porridge! If you ever catch yourself in need of a hot bowl of comfort food, this place is definitely worth a try!

All the reviews are spot on. The chao long was excellent. I just wish the weather was much cooler to fully appreciate how much the meal warmed up the soul. Side of dau cheo quay was an added bonus. Will definitely come back. Note that the parking lot gets full on the weekends. Park on the side street if you want to avoid door dings.

The only place that sells Congee with pork intestines that I know. Great taste but not very clean. That area looks very sketchy but it's on Bellaire blvd so can't expect much.

My husband & I went here & enjoyed the chao long. It was pretty good. This hole in the wall does have good chao long but its pretty dirty! While I was eating and I noticed that their fans was sooo dirty it haven't been cleaned since the place open years ago! The fans was covered with dust bunny... it kind turn my husband & I off. We have mix review on this place because it's not very clean.

The best authentic chao long The price is great and the owner is friendly. He's also very funny you'll never forget him! Great food and great people. What more to ask for?!!!!

Delicious chao and good service! I can't wait to try their other dishes. The place is small and a little bit hidden. They take card for order $10 or above which is great because a lot of good authentic restaurants in this area take cash only, which is a little annoying. Overall highly recommend!

If you're craving congee, this is the place. There's no point messing around the kitchen for this simple dish so head out here. It's not only delicious but hardy as well. The included with the innards are pork blood sausages. Nice touch and good dipping sauces. I actually ordered the chao long and the banh canh cua which was equally tasty. fairly inexpensive and the service is very friendly. Don't let the appearance of the outside chase you away because it says crawfish outside. Will be back for sure. will be back for sure.

i got the chao and I really like it. Mainly I love chai anyways, but you should go try it. but that's not the reason why I'm posting this. we got some lemons and I ate a lemon slice. lemon was trash by itself 1/10 would recommend

Honestly, the best porridge I've had in all of Texas. The consistency is good (watery, good for innards porridge) and they make the best homemade sausage. I wish I had this in my hometown. The flavor is very similar to what you find in Vietnam. They give you a good amount of meat and bean sprouts with every bowl. And super cheap too! Only about $5 for a small bowl and it's filling enough for me when I want something light (good for brunch). Honestly, I come to these places for the food, not the ambiance. This place is super simple and bare minimum clean; it's a mom and pop shop. Don't come here if you need anything more.

I love this place best chao long ever...only place in Houston. Don't have any one who knows how to eat it so I always have to Togo it. They charge 50cent for Togo but portion is good. It's always flavorful and consistent. I love the sausages (gio huyet and gio xa) I always order extra to eat with my porridge. It pairs perfect with their ginger fish sauce.

Nothing is more nostalgic then a good cup of soup! The flavor of their porridge was great!! And the soup is exactly how I remember my dad used to make it back in the day! The lemongrass flavored sausage was amazing!! We ordered it with a side of the bread!! Come prepared to order the menu Is all in Vietnamese!!!

I finally went! As homemade and wholesome as it's going to get. Seasoning was on point, and the soup itself was fresh--no leftover from the night before (lol). Now the sausage in the porridge---where can I buy some?!?! It was amazing! Because of some the herbs I tasted in it, it's gotta be home-made. I saw Banh Canh Hue, Northern-Central Vietnamese udon, on their menu. I will be coming back to try that. Haven't had good banh canh Hue since my Grandma. P.S. Don't come here for atmosphere or conversation, the restaurant is bare minimum with tables and chairs. It's family own. When I went, the cashier was also the waiter.

The chao long here is okay. It is too sweet for my taste. The doi is delicious though.

I am not a fan of rice soup, I hate it when I was a child, I can only eat innards rice porridge, beef ball rice soup, dried squid and shrimp rice soup. It had been so long since I have an authentic innard rice soup, I only can get it when I went back Vietnam, and finally I found this place, the taste is just the same. I am so glad to finally have a bowl of rice soup in winter time or when I have a cold without my mom besides me. An advice for you is if you like thick rice soup, this place is not the place for you, it is very watery, and it is supposed to be that way, Vietnam also have different type of rice porridge, and we also have thick Cháo, but innard rice porridge need to cook with minimum amount of rice, while beef ball is in the middle, and other type of rice soups is usually thick. I just can't imagine the thick innard rice soup, it will be so weird and it will be in the list of the rice soups that I hate, since all of the rice porridge that I have like are watery.

My go to for a chao long Fix. It's a little hole in the wall but their chao always makes me feel homie and warm like how my grandmother would make them. I'm always here for a quick breakfast when I'm in town!

Probably the only place that serves Vietnamese chao long. Seems like they have new owners now because things changed a bit like the recipe, service, and the condiments. Long is clean tasting which is a plus. I know originally they made their own blood sausage because I used to see them make it in the back when I would walk up to pay my tab which is cash only restaurant. Definitely still good but now I have to ask for mam gung and mam nem since they don't offer it to me like they did before. Prices did go up ever since the new owners took over but its still affordable. Portions seem a bit smaller. Hard to complain since there is nobody else to compete with so I still get my chao long fix. If I wanted chao ga then I would go to Cafe Window or Hong Kong Food Street for the Chinese Congee. They also added banh canh hue to their menu which I'm not too sure if it's good or not though it does look good when I see others order it.

The only place that sell Chao Long in town. This place make the best chao long, and very good service. The waitress are very friendly and they even remember your face if you been here more than one time. I use to order the $50 big cup for 10 people. It super!

I love it. That's what I am looking for. I used to eat innards rice porridge in Viet Nam and fell in love with it. Their porridge isn't not wonderful like in VN but it's still great. Hubby cannot eat intestines, innards and stuff so we order small plain bowl for him, big bowl for me, 2 "gio chao quay". My bowl is hugeeee, wow, it's just cost 6.45 bucks. Innards, Intestines ,blood sausage, pig's tongue and kidney were clean and taste delicious. Porridge is watery not too soupy like Chinese style which I like best. It was seasoned with herbs, sliced fried onion, just add some sprout, pepper, chili pepper, lemon....you have a perfect "chao long"( Vietnamese's name) very authentic!!!! My hubby is kind of not like it bc it was too hot for him so he cannot taste anything. His tongue was burn.Well, eating hot bowl congee in hot weather is a little bit uncomfortable, we should have it when winter coming!!!! This place is small but it seems clean enough for me. Small table and chair, small kitchen. I think there are just 2 people work there, one is Waiter and also cashier, another one is chef and cleaning. Service was acceptable, he is happy to serve us and answer our questions. Don't expect a good service if you go to small Vietnamese place like that. Guess what, our meal cost only 10 bucks total, so cheap, so great!!!! They have just " chao long" and "banh canh hue" ( Northern Central Vietnam udon) on menu. You can order extra mixed innards or one kind of innards for to go. I will try banh canh Hue next time, it looks yummy. Love it, will come back !!!
