I have eaten at Chao Pra Ya literally hundreds of times and can't believe I never reviewed them before now. For years, I ate lunch here 2-3 times per week, but since retiring, less than once per week (further interrupted by Covid).
The food has always been good and I prefer both the food and the coziness to any of the other Thai restaurants in town. (I've never understood the fascination others have for TaRaRin.) My favorite dishes are chicken gang puck, pad him ma parn, and garlic chicken. My wife loves their pad ram mit. (Their fried spring rolls are meh, though).
Historically, the service was great. Unfortunately, in the Covid period many of the long-termers seem to have left, and as in any restaurant, when the staff turns over it seems to come in waves. Some of the new team are terrific (Kathy comes to mind who might be the manager?), and others are either learning or possibly will never be the same quality as the old crew.
Another change in the last year or two is the music. While it used to be mellow classic rock in the background (which I never paid much attention to), lately it has been quite edgy and loud at times, possibly to appeal to a younger crowd. One evening it was bad enough in the main dining room (not only loud but really harsh thrashy stuff) that I wondered whether I would return to eat there again, even after all these years of enjoying it.
Having said that, there are no speakers in the room to the left as you walk in. While the music varies from "fine" to "hostile," the room to the left is considerably quieter if this matters to you. I'm going to guess that whoever is on duty gets to choose the music, and my take is that they're not always thinking in terms of the clientele- at least certainly not this Boomer.
Having said all of that, I will probably continue to eat there regularly although these issues have challenged my loyalty a bit. These nits may well come and go, but as long as these irritations don't become the rule, this will be my choice for Thai in Eugene.
