Chapel Hill Bar To Open on SE Hawthorne with Pho Tacos and Vegan Snacks - Eater Portland

"Church, the Sandy cocktail bar that’s probably best known for its frequently Instagrammed photo booth, is spreading the gospel farther south. Willamette Week reported last week that Craig Ericson and Church’s Steven Cook will open a new bar, Chapel Hill, on SE Hawthorne. After some permitting details derailed the intended opening date (April 20), the bar now plans to begin service April 27. Chefs U’ilaniku’ulei Vele and Jake Gross will attempt to resurrect “Asian-fusion” cuisine with a touch of Mexican-American flavors, including chorizo dumplings and “pho’cos,” tacos filled with five-spice-braised beef, bean sprouts, herbs, and a side of bone broth. The restaurant will also serve bao filled with gochujang-glazed karaage as well as a customizable rice bowl, served with a choice of fried tofu, bulgogi beef, or karaage as well as house-made kimchi, spicy cucumber, and pineapple habanero sauce. Loyal to Portland’s hefty vegan community, Chapel’s food menu offers a charitable amount of meat-free options, including rangoons with vegan cream cheese and poblanos and flautas with bulgogi tempeh and vegan queso. Gluten-free diners can stick to pad thai crunchwraps or a queso-slathered burger. The $11 house cocktails, all named with cheeky religious references, range from the supremely fruity to the stark and spirit-heavy. The Divine Ascent, for instance, combines pear vodka with pineapple juice, lime juice, and vanilla. For something a little darker, the Harrowing of Hell pairs Rex Rye Whiskey with amaro CioCiaro, with just a touch of maraschino. Chapel Hill will be open daily from noon to 2 a.m." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

A new space on Hawrethorne that fills a trying really hard modern hipster vibe. They may get a revised rating in the future as they are new and had some near misses. One of the bartenders was great, she has a couple piercings and awesome metallic hair, the other girl was an awful scowling mess (maybe barback). The patio with a fire pit or heaters (its pdx weather is cool) would be a 9. There aren't any currently, but may get added in the future. The flautas and dumplings are delicious. If you want a good crunchwrap go to Century, the ones here are one note and don't really work. The tacos were a near-miss because the meat was just a little too dry. Coincidentally the KFC could have been great but it was just a little too over sauced so the double fry got soggy. The Chapel Bowl got mixed reviews with a consensus that sticky rice would have made the dish. If you're older than 22 the cocktail menu is probably not for you, but try the Divine Ascent.

Good food and drinks, some interesting menu items. Pad thai crunchwrap with peanut sauce? Sure, it was delicious. There's vegan versions of everything if that's what you're looking for. Went on a Monday and it was not busy or empty. It is expensive, especially for an order at the bar kind of place.

Great space. Fancy vibe/clientele and DJ for a Tuesday on Hawthorne. New spot that can use some work on food (great ideas, not perfect execution) and prices ($6 micros and $13 vegan nacho). Bartenders are awesome.

It was actually pretty chill there. The tacos are epic, drinks are good. I'm definitely adding it to my rotation

I wanted to like this place. Every time I came in here I thought it might be a better experience. After 5 tries I'm giving up. The good thing about it is the many comfortable seats in this place, making it a good candidate for hanging out for long periods. And as there are a ton of outlets everywhere, it could make a good place to work. Except. The music here is always, always terrible. The selection is always based on what the bartender wants to hear. I have never across such a selection of people with bad taste in music in my life. Consistently, relentlessly bad. The music is also usually too loud for the time of day. They open around 4 and honestly you rarely get enough people in to need to blast music until 7. And yet. The food is atrocious. I might trust a Mexican person or a person from "Asia" to fuse these two (eye roll) cuisines together. I do not trust whoever this chef is. They did not grow up eating Mexican or "Asian" cuisine prepared for people from those cultures. Otherwise they would not have come up with the unholy abominations on this menu. Add to that, I have been here more than once where someone working here has their kids with them running around unruly. Kids I don't mind, out of control kids are not okay. Also, isn't this a bar? All of these things combine to make this spot a big NO for me.

I adore Church and was so excited when they opened up Chapel Hill a little closer to me. The staff is always so nice and just damn good at their job and the food and drink are always on point and tasty! I didn't quite know what to think about mexican/asian fusion but I LOVE it! And they have everything available for my vegan and veg friends too. Great spot! I will continue to give you my money for the delicious menu items!!

Brand new establishment. Mexican + Asian fusion, with delicious vegan options. Fantastic presentations. Comfort food and complex flavors to tickle your taste buds. Chef Ui came out to greet us and ask us how everything was. The bar is a beautiful space, mint colors with wood and mirror accents. There's Photo booth and a large outdoor patio. Beautiful neon art of the last super.

Chill atmosphere with outdoor seating. Came here for burger week and was not disappointed. The staff was friendly. Some craft beer but mostly mix drinks. Can't beat a $3 tecate.
