Baekjeong Makes a Grand Return to Koreatown Later This Year | Eater LA

"Inside Chapman Plaza, Quarters is described as incredibly popular, and together with On6thAvenue’s incoming Origin it will be pitched against Kijung’s Baekjeong and Ahgassi for Koreatown’s cool-kid Korean barbecue dominance." - Matthew Kang

This is a wonderful plaza with plenty of restaurants to choose from as well as great delicious food. It always depends on the time of day and if it's during the week or week end but rest assured, if your patient and think ahead and order ahead you can always enjoy delicious meal to even sit down in the restaurant. Some of these places still have outdoor seating but you can happily eat inside now.

Juma N.

Google
Fun plaza area with kbbq places like quarters and baekjeong. Tiger suga tea. And sake bar. It is packed on weekend nights and lines for both kbbq places are 2 hours or so. Parking lot on quarters side. 4 dollars for 2 hr I think. Can pay cash or on phone. Man puts ticket on your car. This place feels fun with lights on at night and people all around. Toe bang for soju. Lots of smokers btw. The entrance is a small doorway on the side of sake bar.

Google
A good place to go and spot a nice restaurant or bar. Parking can be a challenge but you just have to be patient or prepare do some walking. There’s several dining options in this location and if you want something else, there’s several nearby.

S Bobby G.

Google
We specifically picked this place to visit in Korean Town. It had plenty of parking spaces so don't bother with the meter. We tried a Korean BBQ there. Wifey found some clothes at half off but we weren't sure they were genuine so passed on them.

Arthur Yoon Real E.

Google
Once the epic center of Korea Town glory, but can't complete with Covid. Due to restriction, it's so empty. Can't wait to un social distance.

Sophia K.

Google
Love going to Chapman Plaza, great for Korean BBQ and other foods. Pre-Covid it was crazy crowded so I avoided it, but they have transformed the courtyard where there used to be valet parking into an outdoor seating area for all the restaurants. It's quite nice to see. For the most part, tables are at least 6 ft apart, staff are taking temperatures at the door and wearing masks and face shields.

Bingran Y.

Google
I absolutely love this place. There's so many restaurants and the crowd is really super cool! It reminds me of some food markets in Asia and Singapore! Will come back for more!

p C.

Google
It appears that they got rid of all the outdoor seating! It really added something nice to the location, especially in the evenings.

Yelp
We decided to walk around and absorb in the beautiful and historical neighborhood. This plaza / market area has beautiful architectures and you can imagine how real the open markets were back in the day. Lots of open outdoor and indoor seatings. Lots of restaurants and shops all around. Difficult to find parking but some inner shops parking lots have limited parking spaces- we were lucky to find one and then just walked everywhere. Lots and lots of stuff to do here. Both activities and food. We wandered around until we got hungry. Lots of plazas/outlet looking area. Maybe it was still too early, but it wasnt too busy when we arrived.

Yelp
Chapman Plaza is one of the most beautiful, architectural gems of Los Angeles. It was first Western U.S. market designed for the automobile and catered to high-class neighborhoods (with luxury department stores, Bullocks Wilshire and Wilshire Galleria within walking distance). I love the Spanish Revival style architecture and I'm so glad the current owners are restoring and maintaining the facade of the building. I frequent the Chapman Plaza shops and it has changed tremendously within the past couple of years. It is now home to popular favorites such as Quarters Korean BBQ, Snow Monster, Kang Ho Dong Baekjeong, Toe Bang, and the new Starbucks. Silverlake Ramen will be opening its newest location at the Chapman Plaza very soon as well. Because there's so many popular restaurants and shops, parking in this area is incredibly hard. There is a valet service and street parking, but finding street parking in this area is a huge challenge on a busy, popular night. K-town is popping and Chapman Plaza is one of the current hot spots.

Yelp
It is a building located between W 6th St and Alexandria Ave, and the historic plaza building is about 50,000 square feet and is located in the heart of Koreatown, hosting several restaurants, bars, and cafes, including Kang Ho Dong Baekjeong, Quarters Korean BBQ, Toe Bang Cafe etc. The yard has been setup as outdoor dining from different restaurants since the pandemic, and the parking here is always tedious.
google avatar

Preciosa S.

Yelp
I love Chapman Market. It has so much outdoor seating and a very open space, it almost feels like a real market surrounded by restaurants, cafes. I'm not sure if the outside seating is because of COVID-19 but there is a lot of open seating for all restaurants INSIDE the market. Love it here! So many passers by and those who come in who take or

Yelp
The restaurants here are good. But the parking -forget it! SUCKS! They put cones up when completely unnecessary. Remove them! There's no reason to abide by them as all the spots are public. The stores here have improved over time so that's getting better. Get rid of the Verizon, get rid of the places no one cares about. I hear dents and such happen all the time with the valet. Really tough to hang here due to the parking situation.

Yelp
One fine day while hanging out with Brian N. and BBQ Mike we decided to search for the fabled Koreatown Cocohodo, and I decided to comment on how nice the Spanish style architecture was in front of the shopping mall that Cocohodo is in. Whenever I have passed by this place I have noticed how nice the architecture is. Without even looking very carefully at the buildings I was pointing out, BBQ Mike said,"It's just supposed to look old!" I had a feeling that he was wrong about that but there was no way to prove it that day. Another fine day while coming back from Cocohodo with my BF we stepped into the interior parking area of the buildings that I had shown BBQ Mike. Inside there is a plaque (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/chapman-plaza-los-angeles?select=6EK5juj1erJpyvlBMxsQAA#2Xyj_MO3pKZ673GOuYKJJg) that has the information I wish I would have had when BBQ Mike assumed that this place was just a new building "meant to look old" and thus devoid of any history. It turns out that this place - known as Chapman Plaza (aka Chapman Park Market) - has been around since the late 1920's! It was built during 1928-1929. The building is close to being one hundred years old! It was also the biggest and most costly building of its kind (drive-in market) in the western united states long ago! It was declared a Historic Cultural monument in 1988! The buildings are in the Spanish Churrigueresque style and feature very ornate cast stone and beautiful wrought iron work. This is definitely a place worthy of visiting in Los Angeles if you are into important historic architecture! http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/chapman-plaza-los-angeles?select=6EK5juj1erJpyvlBMxsQAA#6EK5juj1erJpyvlBMxsQAA http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/chapman-plaza-los-angeles?select=6EK5juj1erJpyvlBMxsQAA#Gg6u0_LphHa920fmRsVZIQ Today, Chapman Plaza has many Korean businesses. One of them is Kang Ho Dong Baekjeong. I have had my eye on it for a while! It currently has 4.5 stars and 345 reviews - pretty good!

Yelp
What's there to not love about the Chapman Plaza? There's K-BBQ, hot pot, soju, more soju, hookah, karaoke, valet parking... If plazas were floating islands, I'd live on the Chapman for the rest of my life! Here's what Chapman's got: 1. Kang Ho Dong Baekjeong (Korean BBQ. PPP = pay per plate.): http://www.yelp.com/biz/kang-hodong-baekjeong-los-angeles#query:kang%20ho%20dong 2. My House Korean BBQ + Hot Pot (AYCE K-BBQ & Hot pot): http://www.yelp.com/biz/my-house-korean-bbq-hot-pot-los-angeles 3. Toe Bang (Korean food and drinks): http://www.yelp.com/biz/toe-bang-los-angeles#query:Chapman%20Plaza%20Korean%20Bbq 4. Antique Cafe (Hookah and cafe): http://www.yelp.com/biz/antique-cafe-los-angeles#query:cafe%20antique 5. Gaam Restaurant and Lounge (alcohol and soju/beer food): http://www.yelp.com/biz/gaam-restaurant-and-lounge-los-angeles And more!
google avatar

Yelp
Home to GAAM and Kang Ho Dong BaekJeong and a crazy packed parking lot... Thank you for existing Chapman Plaza. Where else would I be able to get my fix for delicious Korean BBQ at Kang Ho Dong or my cheesy dokbukki at GAAM? Xie Xie, JY

Yelp
Outdoor seating available for most of the restaurants! The wait times are pretty long though, so make reservations. Parking is $8 all day next door.

Yelp
Chapman plaza is a mad house. It's busy as heck. It's a tiny parky area. You MUST valet. Accept it. Don't argue. Don't bitch and moan. Don't complain. Be nice because these guys are in charge of your car. Just drive your car up like everyone else and hand over your keys. Unless you're the prince/princess/king/queen of some sovereign nation and have some special diplomatic ties to the US which affords you special treatment or you're at least a B list celebrity or a famous Asian, you're NOT special. Just follow the rules and stop holding up the line for everyone else with your dumb questions and complaints. On the positive. Learned some valuable lessons. First, Chapman plaza parking is limited to 2 hours. They also close shop around 1:30 to 2 am so if you happen to go out late, you won't be able to get your car back until the next day about an hour after restaurants open (usually 12). They charge $20 for overnight. WAY better than the alternative of having it towed so I gladly paid. This says a lot about how the valet company and Chapman plaza understand the importance of Korean drinking culture and keeping their customers happy.

Yelp
Seriously, I would give zero star for the valet service at this plaza. My boyfriend and I went to the Cafe Cielito at this place tonight at around 9pm. When we are getting a signature for the validation from the cashier, we asked how much it charges with the validation and somehow that cashier told us that it's only $3 with there place. We went to the valet booth and gave them the ticket with a $5 bill. They didn't give us back the changes so we asked politely that we didn't get the change yet. Then the guy didn't even say anything and pointed at the booth sign that says about the prices. We didn't know about it since it was first time valet parking there so we asked again that the cafe said it would be 3. Even before my sentence to be done, this guy just pointed at the sign again. And he even hold it up and shake it in front of our faces. It was so rude... I honestly doesn't care getting back $2 or even giving them more $2... I was just so shocked at that moment how rude he could be to the customers. He better go back to the school and learn some basic attitude towards others.

Yelp
I love this plaza cause it has everything you need. Korean bakery, Kbbq, several GREAT drinking places and the dirty dog stand for after hours! I've been coming here since I first learned how to drive and this place has ALWAYS been the place to hang out in KTOWN. I don't know any other plaza that gets super packed like this at all hours of the day. Oh and the floral shop Best Wishes makes the best bouquets ever! Although the valet situation is bad, I have friend who've waited up to an hour for their car. I say just pay a little extra if you're going to be drinking here and get the VIP parking.
google avatar

Diana W.

Yelp
Wow worst service ever. In all my years of valet (which is at least 10) I have to say I had the worst experience tonight. Not only were they rude they mockingly waved me good bye and asked my bf to 'control your woman'. Wtf?! Who the heck says that. Please. Don't forget you are talking me. You need to deal with me and whatever issues you have with me and not look for an easy way out okay?!??!?!!???? Worst service ever. Negative stars if I could. Seriously. O.M.G. If you care at all about your car or your personal wellbeing DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT PARK HERE!!

Yelp
Built in 1929, Chapman Plaza AKA Chapman Park Market is a major shopping and dining structure on 6th Street, between S Alexandria Ave and S Kenmore Ave. It's considered one of the main attractions in the Wilshire District of Koreatown. At the time of it's inception, it was a new concept where Hollywood movie stars could go for one stop shopping of fresh produce, meat, and dry goods. If my memory serves me correct, this location had the world's first drive-thru grocery store/market, as it served the wealthy families of the Fremont Place, Windsor Square, and Hancock Park neighborhoods of LA who drove to get their groceries. An entire central courtyard was set aside for automobile parking. Fast forward 85 years later and the outdoor complex is still busy as ever for the many Angelinos that live nearby. The historic building caters mostly to the Korean population, but I can attest that people of all cultures flock there these days for it's delicious dining and trendy nightlife. The building was restored in 1989 to include second story offices, while still having one of the finest examples of Spanish Revival architecture in LA. Originally, the building was built for Charles Chapman (known as the Orange King of CA) and his Chapman brothers who were major land owners. Ever hear of Chapman University? YUP, it's one in the same. RESIDENT EVIL * Kang Hodong Baekjeong. Their second location in OC is set to open in Buena Park at the Village Circle on Beach. * Toe Bang. The only location in K-town that you can find a Water Wheel. * The Gogi. Only been here a couple times, but it seems to be the AYCE alternative for those who are impatient to wait for Kang Hodong Baekjeong. * Cafe Bliss. Tailored for those who don't favor Gaam, some of the foot traffic hits here, with karaoke rooms and a full bar present on the second floor. * Gaam Restaurant and Lounge. Still, one of the hottest places for the mid 20's hipsters and FOB's in K-town. Music is bumping, with an outdoor patio on the top floor. * K Pop Karaoke. The main noraebang within the complex, with a top notch system and above average service. It's a good place to drown that buzz before making the drive back home. * Antique Cafe. I remember this place being a better cafe in the past, but even the hookah and desserts can't stop this place from being rated so poorly. * Lighthouse Waffles & Cake. Never been here since they took over Cake Salon Bosco a while back. For some odd reason, the coffee shops seem to tank at this plaza. * Sake House by Hikari. Once, Kyoto Sushi, recently Bistro Sakana, and now Sake House by Hikari. Let's hope this Japanese infused sushi bar can stay open longer than it's predecessors. I would really consider valet parking when it's busy and to press your luck with the meter parking around the block, if you can find a premier spot. Regardless, of it's issues, I'm always going to have very fond memories of Chapman Plaza. I had some great times when former businesses such as Intercrew Cafe and Bohemian Restaurant still held their ground, but now with a new generation of party goers hitting the scene, I imagine it'll be popular and busy as ever.

Yelp
BE CAREFUL! THESE VALET PEOPLE WILL STEAL YOUR STUFF FROM YOUR CAR! Found out that when I got home to take my stuff out of my car, my camera was missing. They left the camera case but took the camera. Hope karma comes biting you in the ass. Yes I understand it says to take all your valuables out of your car when you valet but I forgot. Make sure to take out all your personal items out of your car before you valet it because these guys will take your stuff. Damn that valet service, the most rude, unprofessional, and disgusting group of people. Don't be pissed at me when I don't tip you anymore because you guys just f***ed up!
google avatar

Henry T.

Yelp
Definitely avoid the valet at this place if you can! They dented the back of my trunk with their reckless driving! All the cars are almost stacked on top of each other and the drivers act like they're baggage handlers tossing around luggage. They accelerate and slam on brakes probably because they're trying to get as many tips as they can. It's really ridiculous!

TK Y.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem. You won't see it from the street. It off 6th st but entrance is on the side street. They are operating during covid by turning the parking lots into outdoor dining. Check it out.
google avatar

Iniko B.

Yelp
Steeped in history, cursed with death, an architectural gem, and a cultural landmark. If this place got bulldozed, you'd probably find the skeletons of dead Korean clubbers under the foundation. Regardless, in its current (quieter) incarnation, the Chapman is one of the safest, cleanest, and most convenient places for fun in Ktown. Businesses have come and gone. Right now, there's valet parking, several restaurants and bars, coffee shops, a salon, boutiques, T-Mobile store, and clubs and singing spots. The club scenes in Collateral was filmed at Bliss here. What sets it apart is the European cobblestone-like setting and the tall walls of the 1929 Spanish Colonial Revival architecture that enclose the plaza and shelter it from the hustle and bustle of LA. There's no other place like it in town. Never been to half of the businesses here, but I have come here for drinks and eats. It's a far cry from all the crazy stories you hear about this place, but you never know. Something crazy is always bound to happen at the Chapman.
google avatar

Jason O.

Yelp
AVOID THE VALET AT ALL COSTS!!!!! Those people are so rude and mean. Whatever happy reasons you're coming here for (i.e. partying, celebrating, etc.) valet employees will ruin your day as they will show you an attitude. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE AVOID VALET AT ALL COSTS. You're not deserved to be treated like shit by them.
google avatar

Ed K.

Yelp
For those who want a 'one stop shopping' koreatown experience, the Chapman Plaza makes it as easy as you can get. With it's private parking lot and array of restaurants/nightlife spots, you can hardly go wrong with anywhere you go. From a great korean BBQ place to multiple soju-infused drinking establishments and karaoke/noraebang to top it off, you'll always find this area alive and happening all hours of the day and night (except for sunday church mornings, you know how koreans are when it comes to church). Always a solid if not exceptional time when going out with friends and eat/drink to your heart's content without fear of driving/reparking from place to place.
google avatar

Annabel A.

Yelp
Nice relaxing environment. Great food, well served. The salad had a unique blueberry dressing, tasted great!!! Came with different side dishes, soup, white rice...can't go wrong for 13 bucks. Great first time experience :)
google avatar

Aryf H.

Yelp
Almost always busy (sometimes moderately, sometimes very). Yes, parking in this area can be a real pain (though sometimes you can get lucky with a street spot) and I've never valet'd it here (I don't like that shit.....), but once you're 'in', there's a selection of restaurants, stores, bars and such (and of course the obligatory 'noraebang' (karaoke) ) as well. Some have been there long-term (e.g. Toe Bang and Bohemian) and some are new additions (there's Sakana Izakaya where Kyoto used to be and a new place that doesn't even have a sign [hey, how are people supposed to know what it is - is it some big secret....??] ). Located close to other plazas and many other establishments, it's a quick walk if you decide you wanna venture a bit further.
google avatar

Chris E.

Yelp
Chapman Plaza is such a great place to hang out. Once you're parked, you don't really have to drive anymore... everything is all nicely tucked in one location. You have food, coffee, dessert, club, and karaoke all in one! Great if you are planning to get plastered. The only bad thing is that the parking is SO squished. I have no idea how they get cars in and out of that sardine can.
google avatar

danica c.

Yelp
Chapman Plaza, as a whole, is an OK place with a handful of just OK restaurants, the featured restaurant is Gaam, which is the best of them all, other than that, meh... It's conveninent cause its got every thing, but It's not awesome.
google avatar

So H.

Yelp
I avoid this place like the plague. Unless you get here wicked early OR lucky enough to find street parking OR somebody else is DD... parking SUCKS round things!! The Valet people are rude and just plain retarded.
google avatar

Andrew H.

Yelp
I miss LA because of places like Chapman Plaza. If you drive a nice car.... valet shouldn't be problem since they'll keep your car in the lot. if you drive a sub par kinda car.... try to find street parking. However, this review is just for chapman plaza development and if there is one piece of property i can own in Ktown, this would be it.

David L.

Yelp
I really liked this place as they have quarters, baek jung, etc. But then valet people are way too rude. I could come here again if they're not there. Otherwise, I will never be back here ever again. I know generally valet people aren't very nice but guys.. Trust me valet people here is different level. Unless you want to be treated like crap or let them crash your car, don't use the valet service here.

Phillip H.

Yelp
I try to avoid going to this place in the evening hours just to avoid the valet parking. I believe the day time is self parking.

Yelp
what a silly silly cute great little concept smack in the middle of koreatown!!! it's been around FOREVER with stores&bars&restaurants constantly changing&not lasting for more than6mos (IF THAT?!? HA!) but everytime i have to pass by this strip mall&see those silly silly cute little roof lights trickling down, i feel kinda warm&fuzzy inside, knowing that i live in LA, where they have the MOST OBNOXIOUS CRAAAAAZY rambunctious funnnnnn koreans in the world&their food f'in ROCKS!!!!

Jenn L.

Yelp
the valet parking attendants are so rude! unless you're driving a benz or bmw.. i only come here for the cafe, but i wouldn't come here often.
