The Best Places to Eat at the Jean-Talon Market | Eater Montreal

"One of several butcheries to call Jean Talon home, Balkani has been giving market visitors something to snack on for over 15 years. Beyond their selection of cold cuts and take-home sausages, the European-style butcher shop also offers grilled sausage sandwiche to go." - Mallory Frayn

I can’t NOT get a sando when visiting the market. It’s my favorite meal here. I always opt in for spicy with cabbage and ketchup.

The Balkani dry Hungarian sausages ( Csabai) and mititei ( Romanian style kebab of traditionally pork sheep veal) are great but the Ciorba de Perisoare ( meatball soup) is simply awful! It’s all pork meatballs ( supposed to be beef, pork and rice) and judging from the white colour maybe they add sour cream ( optional add-on when eating). There’s barely a hint of leustean ( a Romanian herb that’s a must in this dish). I just threw it away and wrote this review.

A good store, but it doesn't follow the opening hours. Sometimes they open later, other times they close earlier. Today, December 5, 2025, they closed 45 minutes earlier. 😐

The woman who served me was incredibly friendly. I ordered a sausage sandwich with mustard and sauerkraut. The bread the sausage was on was too dry. The sausage itself had good flavor but the sandwich didn’t work.

Jean talon has so much incredible foods and shops to choose from, but this one cannot be missed! I had a chance to try their sausage sandwich and truly its one of the most delicious and flavourful sausage there is! I also took home chicken sausage to make at home, their staff is so helpful and their products are simply fantastic!

Amazing sausage sandwich. Delicious sauerkraut with your choice of sauce, including a delicious Dijon with whole mustard seeds.

Yelp
Sandwiches here are amazing! My partner and I were pleasantly surprised at how good they were (despite it being an impromptu stop). A must try if you are at Jean-Talon Market.

Yelp
Tried these sausages and grilled meats at the Jean Talon Market. You can have alone or as a sandwich. You can add mustard if you want but be spefic which mustard (we wanted brown but got yellow). The sausages were especially good and crazy juicy - juice will squirt all over if you're not careful (and we weren't).

Yelp
Wow what an amazing place! The moment I saw that juicy black pork/beef kebab in the window, I wanted it so bad! And it did not disappoint. I don't think the young lady responded to me calling it a kebab, but she was wise enough to suggest the bun to go with it. It's wrapped up nicely so you can pick it up and walk around. No unnecessary spillage of juices. I then went back again and got just the kebab piece to go with a hot dog for my kid. I'd rate the kebab higher than the sausage.

Yelp
Balkan has been my go to place for European smoked sausages and meats. It's a small little meat shop in MJT- Marche Jean Talon. I believe they smoke their sausage on the South shore. The selection is great and the meats are always fresh and delicious. Top notch smoked sausages- loads of selection of Polish Kabanosy - you can have fresh, more smoked and different levels of dry sausage. The summer sausage is sinful and delicious. The knackwurst are great on the grill in the summer! The only downside here is usually there are only two people working the counter and there can be 3-4 people in line. So patience is needed as service can be a bit slow. However it's worth it for the delicious sausage and meats! If you are in need of Polish, German Eastern European meats it's a great place! Prices are reasonable.

Yelp
Two words for you: Bacon Sausages. They don't taste intensely of bacon but the flavour is smokey and subtle and delicious, especially on the BBQ. On the weekend Balkani sells hot little baskets of homemade sausage and saurkraut - super yummy treat, especially when it's cold out. Inside there is a small meat counter with several flavours of homemade sausage and dried meat sticks, and an upper level with all kinds of Polish products including chocolate covered plums and a variety of perogies.

Yelp
Loved this stall in the Jean-Talon market. Offering a mixture of Slavic and Eastern European goods, Balkani delivers in such a satisfying way. The mici here (a ground beef, veal, pork, lamb meat roll/kebab), was phenomenal. A friend of mine from Bucharest always talked about the street food in Romania, but I cannot say I've come across this crowd pleaser of a dish until now. The kebab/sausage was so juicy, spicy, smoked. Served atop some mildly crunchy and vinaigretty sauerkraut, then perched on a simple hard roll, it made me wonder why in the world we settle for simple processed hot dogs. Why...Ever! For less than $5, this sandwich was a great value and had amazing flavor. Don't miss it!! And now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to find a plane ticket to Romania.

Yelp
This place was so good. I will definitely be hitting it up whenever we are at the Marche Jean Talon. I got the saucisse piquante on a roll with sauerkraut and whole grain mustard. My buddies go the mici served up the same way. Delicious!!!

Yelp
This is a review for the Balkani in Jean Talon Market: the grilled sausage dog was great! My wife and I tried a spicy sausage that comes with a slaw topping, ketchup and mustard. This meat market is definitely a must try if you're at Jean Talon Market.
