Where to Drink Wine in San Diego Right Now

"Small but mighty, the independently-owned urban winery produces its natural craft wine from local vineyards, emphasizing the wine’s “authentic character” by preserving the naturally occurring yeast created during the production process. The winery also teams up with environmentally-friendly organizations like 1% For The Planet, where one percent of its sales are donated to help tackle environmental issues." - Roxana Becerril

We love their sparkling rosé (firefly) and red wine! The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly and you can tell they genuinely love to share their wine with people! We joined their wine club and so excited to try those club member exclusive experiences!

Google
This place was really cool! We did the flight that tries all of their wine, highly recommend. Our favorite was the Whoa Jake! They had a very cute dog friendly patio. It was a really cool and chill vibe there. You can bring outside food, but note you can't bring outside drinks, so no splitting off to the brewery next door! All the wine we tried was excellent, we will definitely be back here.

Google
We love coming here! So many inventive wines and cocktails. We have been coming for years and the winemaker and wife owners are lovely people who make great wine in an urban winery here in SD! You can bring food in to eat and kids are welcome if you need to bring them. We had 12 of us here once with 6 of them kids and had room to relax and enjoy the company. Support local!

Google
This wine is an absolute must try in San Diego. The owners are artist when it comes to wine, and they make such incredible combinations that keeps you wanting to come back for more. There is no other winery in San Diego county that makes such unique combinations and can even take on some of the best wineries in Temecula, and even Napa! Can’t say enough good things about this winery this is a must try!

Google
Fantastic winery that I recommend to everyone! Wine is delicious and the unique project x wines and slushies are always fun to try! Eric is always so welcoming and has such fun events that keep us coming back for more. Highly recommend anyone give them try and join the wine club too!

Google
I LOVE this winery, so many reasons why! A few: 1) Their Wines! White, Rose & Red, they have something delicious for everyone and they've used local fruit to make them. 2) They also have a creative program of specialty slushies & spritzers or other drinks on tap most days (some available in cans to go) which are so much fun and really get you thinking out of the box about "wine". 3) They're Close By! Barely up the 15, I love the close proximity to SD and also the Makers area in general has great stuff. 4) Their Wine Club is awesome, it's made for wine lovers, as it allows you to essentially save up money for investment later in their products, you rarely find such a generous Wine Club out there. There are also freebies for members & a discount on everything. 5) Eclectic patrons parties: have been tacos, cheese, pizza, chocolate and more pairings as well as fun events like music night, movie night and trivia night among others. This is a fun and rewarding local business to spend time at, as well as frequent as a Wine Club member and I think everyone should stop through & see all that they offer!!

Google
Great place to enjoy nice local wines, 8 varieties of it. Good wines and very pleasant service by the owner (Echo)! Will come back for sure.

Google
My wife and I have been members here for several years. Always a fun environment in the tasting room and Eric really goes out of his way to put together some really great tasting wines and spritzers. I especially look forward to his Project "X' concoctions, which are essentially different wine spritzer cocktails he puts out every week. There are also a lot of cool events going on weekly like the B movie nights where they show bad old sci-fi movies, or vinyl night where you can bring in your records and play tunes. If you're exploring the district, definitely don't miss this spot!

Yelp
Only tried one thing when I was here but it was amazing. I tried the root beer cooler; it was a special thing that they had that day. It was my first time to Charlie & Echo and I also never had a cooler. The staff behind the counter was great! He probably senses my hesitancy about the cooler and offered me a sample before I went all in and got a glass. They also have some snacks to munch on. I would love to come back to try their wine.

Yelp
I absolutely loved this place! It's in an industrial area with a couple other businesses. They offer individual tasters or a flight of 5. They offer glasses and have 2 on tap options. I had their "mimosa" which was Sauvignon Blanc, papaya juice, and lime juice. It was really tasty. My boyfriend really enjoyed one of their reds. Service was great. It's very cute inside. There is a bar, tables, and small patio. I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
It's been a while since I've been here but still great. I came on a Fri right around open and it wasn't too busy. They have a small amount of outdoor seating and indoor seating. I got the sangiovese and it was delish! $14 a glass so pretty standard.

Yelp
A couple of weeks ago, I met up with a close friend on a Friday night. She lives in North County and I am in central San Diego, so Charlie & Echo was a perfect location between our homes. We also read on their website that they welcome outside food, and have a sushi restaurant in the same business park, which made this a perfect location for dinner and wine. We got ourselves some sushi and headed to the winery to settle in with a few drinks. The area where the winery is located is a random unassuming business park in Mira Mesa. If I had not looked it up, it would have been impossible to find. I had learned about Charlie & Echo because I had attended a SIP San Diego event that was an introduction to all of the local San Diego wineries. Anyway, I didn't care for the outdoor area of Charlie & Echo much, as it was a bit of covered patio in a parking lot, but when I walked in, artwork and murals covered the walls. The owner/ wine maker was very welcoming. Even the patrons were welcoming and started to tell us about the wines. It felt like a very comfortable, casual, artsy, and local place. The owner gave us a description of the wines, and a few tastes to help us make our decisions. During our time there, we were able to try and savor several of the wines. We were not rushed at all, and were given plenty of time to chat and eat our sushi. When we went to the bar for a couple of refills, and the owner was there to help us make decisions when we asked. The entire experience was positive. I think the reason I couldn't give 5 stars was a personal taste. I think the the wines were a bit outside of what I would normally choose for myself... perhaps a bit oakey, and possibly not dry enough for my taste. I will say that my friend absolutely loved the wines... so it was my personal taste that did not match up. Aside from that, it was a very lovely experience. I also had read that the winery, aside from the very small outdoor area, is not dog friendly, which is a bit of a negative for me, as I love to take my best friend everywhere. However, it was a wonderful evening. If you have a chance to get up to Mira Mesa for a glass or two, treat yourself to a lovely evening!

Yelp
I feel so grateful I found this jewel of a winery. I'm a member because the wine is great and the member benefits are awesome. It's all points on anything you want and membership translates to money/ points that you can use on anything you want. Plus they have awesome events like the wine pizza pairing showed and a free first pour for you and a guest weekly. The owners are fantastic and know their stuff, and their people and I love coming here. The newsletters are funny and fun and while they don't serve food beyond a special event or cheese/ cracker snack pack you can bring in your own food. This means from anywhere. My friend and I do wine here with mini picnics of stuff from home and it's glorious. Did I mention they have a sustainability and green business certification AND are dog friendly? Or that they are owned by a bad ass veteran who uses she pronouns? Or that the inside is decorated with cool art and they have a cute outdoor space? Or that they also have wine slushes and cocktails inspired by wine? Yeah no big deal but you're missing out if you haven't come by. Foxtrot out.

Yelp
I have some love for this place in my heart since it was one of my first wine club memberships when I was going to school in San Diego. A really sweet couple owns this place, and they always have a great variety of their own self-made wines. They are always a joy to chat with, and they also try their best to do all sorts of fun collaborations and events where they pair their wines with various meals. It's always fun to come through! The place is located in a small plaza in a converted warehouse, and the surrounding shops are also very fun to check out. They're also dog friendly if you want to take your dog to go wine tasting with you, and also it's pretty fun to pet the regulars' dogs as they come by. They always have some really interesting experimental drinks to try out. If you're into really conventional stuff this place probably isn't for you, but if you're willing to experiment then this place is it!

Yelp
What a gem in the San Diego urban wine scene! Delicious and imaginative wines. My husband and I stopped by their tasting room after discovering their label at Clos. We each enjoyed a flight of wine (that you get to pick out yourself) and had a wonderful time chatting with the wine maker Eric. We ended up going home with a bottle of their Firefly - a dry sparkling rosé. Can't recommend Charlie & Echo enough!

Yelp
Location is a little off the main roads in between Miramar and Mira Mesa, tucked into a great community with food, coffee, salsa makers, and ginger beer brewing. This spot is great at all times of the day, but my favorite time is when Charlie & Echo is open. My first time ever coming here, was on a whim and purely based on how close it was to my house. Now I can't even count the times I've been, but being a part of the wine club just gives us more of a reason to go. The location moved from behind the cluster of businesses to right up front, with both an indoor and an outdoor seated area. The inside has a wine bar and multiple tables, with ones perfect sized for a date or a larger group, my favorite place is at the bar. There are many wine options, and Eric the owner, is always happy to help make any selection for a glass in person or a bottle to go. He also creates an item called Project X, which go on rotating themes throughout the year : hops, sangria, spritzers, etc. I've had many of them, and I wouldn't select a favorite, because they are all so unique and exciting to try. We have bought many bottles and project x's to bring home, and enjoy them all the time. The food options have been expanding over the past few months specifically. They used to partner up and have food available from Senior Salsa, but now they have perfect wine pairing options, with tons of cheeses, meats, crackers, and more. They also just added new options for their merchandise, including shirts, hats, and tote bags. I heavily suggest coming here for anyone who likes natural wine, great conversation, and doesn't want to have to go far to wine taste.

Yelp
Had a lovely time urban winery located in a warehouse-esque area in Miramar. Service from Monica was very friendly and knowledgeable. They had a variety of delicious snacks available--including the most delicious crackers and goat cheese. The atmosphere was great as well. Cool find - would return.

Laura M.

Yelp
We love going to C&E. They have very interesting wines that are amazing. Our favorites are Dark Star and Woah Jake. The best part is that the Project X and the slushy change every week so you always can try something new. The mixes are always very special and pair well together. They also have a great membership program that we highly recommend. Service is super nice and they are pet friendly.

Carolina G.

Yelp
Charlie & Echo is a wonderful winery that I always highly recommend. They have a great selection of natural wines and some experimental wine cocktails/spritzers that are always delightful to try. I've been a member for a few years now and love the member community and all the events that the owners put on. Check them out if you are in the area, you won't be disappointed!

Russ C.

Yelp
Great wine and friendly folks. Very creative approach with grapes to make natural wines. Go check them out!

Yelp
I came here for a nonprofit event and fell Inlove. I got a taster set of five wines and loved every single one. This amazing married couple own the place and we're so kind and knowledgeable. I will be back!

Yelp
I am having the flight what a great experience. They have all 8 wines plus project X for 25. This is the best deal there is a group singing every Saturday.

Yelp
Awesome winery in Miralani Maker's District in Miramar! Very safe during this time. There are a couple of chairs inside that were spaced apart appropriately & some more seating outside under a tent. I did a wine tasting & everything that I tried was nice & refreshing. I really enjoyed their rotating drink item of the month, mmm!

Ariel W.

Yelp
Great wine and really cute atmosphere! You can tell the owner really cares about your experience and is passionate about his business

Yelp
Charlie & Echo takes many of things I like about craft breweries and morphs them into a great urban winery. Yes, they are also nestled into the Mirilani Makers District along with several great breweries. I enjoy that they have gone a different direction with a winery. Do yourself a favor and walk to the other side, the less populated side of the main Mirilani building and check them out. The wine tasting pours are generous, and the variety is surprising. Yes, you will get classic options such as red and whites, I especially liked the chardonnay on my last visit. However, you will find several rotating offerings. There was a few hopped options as well as tasty hard seltzer on my last visit. Even a few sparkling wines. Get in here! Cheers.

Rebecca F.

Yelp
Not for me! A very non traditional wine environment. Many blends which might appeal to someone looking for a different wine tasting experience. Very small indoor/outdoor setting and parking is limited. Slushy was the highlight (and it wasn't that good).

Luke M.

Yelp
We stopped in on an early Saturday afternoon. Tempranillo was good, sparkling white was good. Wifey and I both had a second glass. Plenty of tables, only two other people, so it was hard to check the vibe of the place. No couches, no comfy chairs, so not that kind of place. But I can see us bringing a card game and having some good drinks
google avatar

Yelp
What an amazing find! I have an auto immune condition and am really bothered by wines with a lot of additives. This maker uses organic grapes (mostly) and does not add any sulfites. Makes a world of difference - they don't bother me. And they are delicious - a wide range of red, whites/blushes - they are great chilled too. The owners have such an interesting story and are always welcoming. The tasting area/wine bar is such a great secret spot - like a private club. And their wine club membership allows you to take your monthly membership and use it as credit to buy wine! What's not to love about all of this! Miralani Makers District is such a cool little vibe and this place is one of the reasons. We are forever members
google avatar

Nicole D.

Yelp
Talk about personal service! We had a great time enjoying a wine flight and lounging outside. Quite a few modifications for COVID-19 so I felt very safe. Very inventive wines, I can say I've ever had any wines like these. You need to give these a try if you are in the mood to be adventurous.
google avatar

Thida T.

Yelp
Charlie & Echo's wine is ahhhmazing! I'm a fane of whites more than reds and none of then dissapoint. Their Project X beverages are so good. The pineapple coconut sangria will always be my favorite. The space is welcoming and so are the staff!
google avatar

Timothy H.

Yelp
As we were working our way through Miralani Maker's District, we (literally) wandered in here just before closing and we're glad we did. We got to meet Claire (Charlie) and Eric (Echo) and did their YOLO tasting, which was a taster of all their wines for that day. I know close to nothing about wines, but Eric and Claire are super friendly and love to share any and all tasting notes, fun facts, etc. They told us that their wines tend to be on the dryer side, and there was a huge range of wines to try. I have no idea if the wines are good or not, but I do know that we had an excellent experience and wouldn't hesitate to go back!
google avatar

Alicia L.

Yelp
Cute little place & tasty wine. We came on a Friday evening & it was a bit busy but most people were inside & we grabbed an outside table to sit with our pup. We ended up ordering a bottle of rose & it was SO good. It wasn't as sweet as the typically rose but I liked it much better & it didn't give me the normal wine headache. My boyfriend doesn't like wine & he even said he'd get it again. Fun little spot & id definitely go back to try more wines!
google avatar

K M.

Yelp
Stopped in with a girlfriend to check this place out. We did the tasting flight...$19 for 9 tastes. Both of us LOVED each and every wine. Eric, the owner and wine maker, was so friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommended!!!

Maggie M.

Yelp
Such a cool spot! Did the flight where you get to try all the wines and they were all delicious! Will definitely be going back.
google avatar

Christie A.

Yelp
Love this place! We went there when it was a little slow, and tried the tasting of pretty much all the wine. It was a rather good experience. The owners are a sweet couple who are fun to chat with and told us about the stories behind the wines and their names. The wine are delicious, there were some I wanted to revisit and some which weren't my favorite. But overall, a nice place to visit.

Alan T.

Yelp
I love going to Charlie and Echo and experiencing their wines. Everything is grown and made locally, which makes me feel good. The space is relaxed and convivial and the winemakers, Eric and Claire, do a great job at making everyone feel welcome.
google avatar

Jonathan S.

Yelp
The wine really is unique, love the experimentation. Eric was super kind and inviting to my girlfriend and I (also our dog). We liked the LaDona the best. Check it out if you are making the rounds to the breweries next door. Great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
google avatar

Stephanie M.

Yelp
Highly recommend! The wine is amazing and the owners are super nice. Our boyfriend and I are definitely coming back.

Vanessa H.

Yelp
I've been coming to Charlie & Echo since they were in another location and known as Vinavanti. It's a small urban winery with a very relaxed atmosphere. The wines are organic and mostly sulfite free. So no wine hangover the next day. Eric the winemaker/owner is very friendly and will help you find a wine you'll love. If you're adventurous try the Project X it changes weekly. The 2012 Syrah is a must try!
google avatar

Bryan H.

Yelp
Eric was a great host, very knowledgeable and fun to talk to! Great wines and a cool urban vibe for a tasting room
google avatar

Sara A.

Yelp
We have been coming here since they opened, amazing wine! Give the Jezebel (a dessert wine) a try. Our roommate is part of their wine club which gets you 20% off all wine! A must try on the miralani (beeralani) beer district
google avatar

Danyel C.

Yelp
Ok, I want to be nice because Eric was such a nice guy, but my followers expect me to be honest. I gave two stars because of the great service and interesting conversation. The wine is literally the worst I've ever had. I used to sell for a wine distributor but hubby and I also home brew so I'm into experimentation, but you should be able to pick out some characteristic or color or something of each grape varietal. All of these wines just tasted sour. Now not as sour as the sour red but still. The only two wines that tasted faintly like wine were the Mouvedre (Eric called it something else) and the Syrah. But you still would never be able to pick out the varietal. I couldnt figure out why they had moved so many times and changed names but I'm assuming the bad wine is the reason. But then that's my assumption. If you love sour beer and hate wine, you will probably love this place. If you love wine, probably not. Again, I feel really bad writing this review as Eric was such a nice guy but people don't read my reviews to hear about nice people. But if you are looking for a great conversationalist, you should go here.
