Charlie's Backyard BBQ

This is the best bbq brisket sandwich I have ever eaten! So tender and juicy! It didn’t need the side of sauce that was included but I used some anyway. The sauce was also delicious. Even the bun was something special. Definitely some kind of enriched bun was used. The potato salad was also very good. The potatoes were cooked perfectly. My husband said the catfish is amazing but it takes a little longer because it’s cooked fresh not just reheated. The prices are very reasonable and even more reasonable during the lunch time special. I gobbled down half my sandwich before remembering to take a picture. Super nice folks run this place. Local not a chain!!

As a military veteran I have traveled to various countries, and all over the country. Without a doubt I can say, that this place has the best BBQ I've ever had in my life. I ordered the 2 meat combo plate. Spicy sausage, it was supple, juicy, and the perfect hint of spice, and the portion was perfect! Brisket was the most juicy and soft I ever had but held a perfect texture at the same time, try it! The fries were a perfect temperature, crunch, and flavor. Beans had a hint of spice but were well balanced. This is now my favorite spot, and I'm going to recommend it to everyone I know! Lastly the staff and owner were amazing! This place deserves only 5 stars! Below is a picture of what I ordered and how I left it, couldn't get enough!

So glad I decided to try this place! Ribs fell off the bone and not dry! Brisket was cooked to perfection and the pulled pork was great! Owners made you feel like you were lifelong friends (1st time meeting them)! Will definitely be back!

The best food and people. Always a relaxing vibe with good tunes playing or even sports depending on the day. As long as I am in the Phoenix area I will be eating at Charlie Backyard Bbq. I always get the pulled pork with their bbq. But everything is so dang good. Charlie himself is as polite and respectful as you will find in a person. I’ve sat there and watched him go above and beyond for customers. Amazing place.

Mid food, laughable portions. Ordered the pork Mac, received a hockey puck sized portion of plain Mac and cheese. Ten bucks for something that tastes like it came from the Fry's grocery store hot food bar. Called to ask what happened and their employee Kersten said they don't carry pork Mac anymore. Their brisket is below average. Somehow bested by the stuff at Dickies (very low bar). Scam. Avoid.

The brand new Charlie’s Backyard BBQ! Amazing BBQ but the catfish is some of the best in town! Don’t leave without some banana pudding! Awesome people too! Charlie is such a happy and kind guy. The decor is great, gives a real indoor backyard feel.

We decided to try this place and it was very good. We tried the brisket, pulled pork, and chicken and all of them were cooked perfectly. I couldn't decide which sauce I liked better, the house sauce or the citrus ginger. They were both delicious. I had slaw and beans as sides and thought they were good too. We also got the banana pudding and chocolate cake for dessert, and I enjoyed them both as well. I've had BBQ from numerous places, including Alabama, North Carolina, and Texas, and this place can hang with the best of them. If you like good BBQ then you will like Charlie's Backyard BBQ as well.

First time customer.. I ordered the Jr Rib lunch special that totaled $14. 3 ribs, cup of greens and corn bread muffin w/ a cup of sauce. Reading over the excellent reviews posted, I must’ve showed up on the wrong day or time. Got there a little after opening on a Thursday and had a chance to look around while waiting to be noticed. The place has nice table and chairs, 2 TVs and the floor seemed to be cleaned. The owner noticed me standing there and greeted me with a kind “welcome to our backyard…”. I appreciate his smile and kind greeting. The food looked good in parking lot and I was so looking forward to some good food. So, that’s about all I’m gonna add to this review. I do wish Charlie and his Backyard BBQ the best.

Brand new place and They have some amazing BBQ! Their home BBQ sauce has a semi Smokey taste which is what bbq sauce should taste like compared to others. Definitely will be coming here everytime we want BBQ food

Great new spot in a reviving area of Mesa. Found this new place while running errands and knew we had to give this local place a try after reading the reviews. Super friendly people, the owner was running the front and was so welcoming. If you've been on the fence about going, DO IT!! We tried several meats when we went tonight and sides so we could sample a variety of things. We've had a lot of BBQ in different states and this was a great place in Mesa that we'll definitely be back for. Brisket - delish and so tender Pulled pork - flavorful and not super fatty which I appreciated (they actually give you tons of meat not just a bunch of BBQ drenched meat) Chicken - this was actually one of my favorites. Soft and tender not dry from being smoked with a nice crisp. We also tried their coleslaw, baked beans, and Mac n cheese. Liked that the coleslaw wasn't swimming in Mayo and had a nice flavor and texture. Beans were great too. We also tried the banana pudding and chocolate cake. Banana pudding was the winner of the two! Thanks for the delicious dinner Charlie and crew, we'll be back to try the rest of your menu soon!

I work close by and have seen this place several times. I finally decided to give it a try today, and glad that I did. Food was great and very reasonably priced. The owner took my order and was friendly and courteous. The restaurant was clean and had some cool 80's music playing. I'll be back!

We had an incredible time trying this new bbq place. As a midwest native, it's hard to find a similar experience here to a real neighborhood backyard bbq... but this was IT! I had the brisket lunch plate (which is a bangin' deal for $10) with potato salad - both awesome. My husband had the pulled pork plate ($18) with mac and cheese! Definitely try the Citrus Ginger sauce, super unique and delicious. After this wonderful meal, we will be returning to sample the dessert menu The owner was taking orders at the counter and his happy energy is so infectious! The seating area felt like a nice casual midwestern backyard with a warm ambiance. Can't wait to come back!

Is any restaurant worth a 45 minute drive?? We're in the Northwest valley and in the south east valley is Charlie's YES is worth the time. We had their amazing macaroni and cheese with brisket & pulled pork. Moist, tender, flavorful and DELICIOUS. Charlie's is an amazing family owned place to call "our let's go for BBQ" and worth the drive. Go Go Go

Super friendly staff, but unfrotunately, I think I may have gotten a banana pudding that sat in the fridge too long, or one that succumbed to food odor cross contamination. Texture of the pudding was on point, but I couldn't get over whatever odor it absorbed - both smelled and tasted of this distinct, odd odor.

Charlie's Backyard BBQ is THE spot! From the meats to the sides you cannot go wrong! The backyard Mac is now my Friday lunch and I look forward to it all week! The Mac is homemade and always hits. The brisket and pulled pork are tender and flavorful. And the bbq sauce is the cherry on top! The good food is matched with good service, friendly and speedy every time. So glad this gem is close to home!

Just hit up this new BBQ joint, and wow, I'm so glad I did! First off, the lunch special is an absolute steal--$10 for a drink, sandwich, and a side? Yes, please! I went with the brisket sandwich and mac and cheese, and both were fantastic. The brisket was perfectly cooked--juicy, tender, and packed with flavor. The sandwich was loaded, and I mean loaded, with brisket. It's rare to find such a generous portion at this price point. The mac and cheese was thick and cheesy, exactly how it should be. Now, let's talk about the sauces. Their citrus ginger BBQ sauce is a game-changer--subtle yet flavorful, and not overpowering at all. I also tried their hot BBQ sauce, which had just the right amount of kick, balanced beautifully with that classic BBQ tanginess. I've had BBQ everywhere from local favorites here to BBQ central in Texas, and this is that good! The food was so good that I stopped halfway through to snap a pic and write this review--that's how impressed I was. On top of all that, the gal who helped us was so extremely kind and generous. Seriously, if you love BBQ, you need to check this place out. I'm really hoping they get lines out the door because a place this good deserves to stick around. Highly recommended and I'll definitely be back!

This was an amazing discovery on my last day in Mesa. If you're looking for fall off the bone chicken or ribs this is your place. I had the lunch special for just $10 I received a Chicken Thigh and leg, a cup of delicious beans, and a soda. When I come back next year, this will be one of my pit stops for lunch. I highly recommend Charlie's Backyard BBQ!

Extremely fair priced and tasty strip mall style bbq. Lunch specials are really good, I ordered a two combo with two sides, and the portion is pretty good for what I paid. The meats are all moist, both brisket and ribs are greatly flavored, smoke ring present without the meat being dry at all. They also make their own bbq sauce and they are very good as well. Thank god because the previous bbq spot was not good at all. Owner seems to be taking pride operating here and I will be coming back for sure!

We tried this place yesterday and it's REALLY good! Brisket and ribs were tasty and tender Mac and cheese, beans, and corn bread muffins were yummy sides. Good price too. We met Charlie and he was super nice

We discovered Charlie's Backyard BBQ 6 days ago and have already been there 4 times!!! I've eaten bbq at least a thousand times all over the US and would put Charlie's in the top 2 or 3 that I've ever eaten. Obviously every person has a different flavor profile they prefer, but Charlie's is better than any BBQ restaurant in the Phoenix metropolitan area...and I've eaten at almost every one of them. The flavor of each of the meats is excellent! You don't even need any BBQ sauce! The bbq beans, mac & cheese, and potato salad are also really good!

We decided to give this place a try since we were in the area and it had great reviews. It did not disappoint!!! I ordered ribs with a side of mac and cheese. The ribs were so tender, they fell right off the bone. They came with a side of bbq sauce. The sauce was perfect and not overpowering. My husband got the brisket sandwich which came with fries and a cornbread muffin. He was very pleased with his brisket. He said it was cooked and seasoned perfectly. I also ordered some banana pudding to go. Everything was delicious! Seriously, the best bbq we've had in a long time. The service was fast, owner and staff were also very friendly. We will definitely be regular customers from now on. I'll be sharing this gem with all my friends and family as well. Keep up the great work! It really shows that you love what you do.

Visiting from Socal and craved BBQ- this place satisfied all. Ribs and Brisket were great and BBQ sauce was on point. Served by Charlie, the owner, and he treated us like an old friend. Highly recommended.

The food was AMAZING. I don't think BBQ gets much better than Charlie's BBQ. Even the sauce, the sides, and the dessert were great, nothing disappointed. Charlie is very kind and made our visit feel very special. Definitely recommend!

I've been fortunate to have BBQ from all over the country. This place is without doubt the best BBQ I've ever had. The owner is incredibly friendly and honest (wouldn't even let us buy the chicken because he didn't believe his current stock was worth selling. And the food had so much incredible flavor! It's a bit pricey but you get what you pay for in quality.

best bbq and sides i have had in years since moving here to mesa. ribs brisket beans were superb! we encountered co-workers of my son whom have eaten there 3 days in a row. they shared thar all the sides fare surpassed every others offered in town. we will be definitely be returning asap ! so.impressed by the quality of this new spot!

I was driving by and something told me to stop in so I did. Great choice. They're all so friendly, the food was amazing, it's a cute little place! I got the pulled pork sandwich with baked beans and potato salad and it was exactly what I wanted :) I'll definitely be back. Thank you guys!

Staff were great and friendly. I got brisket and hot links with beans and potato salad. All were good, but the brisket stood out as excellent.

Went because I was in the mood for Tom's BBQ but Charlie's has replaced it. I was impressed - twas really good. And I made a stupid remark that could have caused offense even though it applied to me as well. They were still very nice. Gonna go back and try other items.

Brisket was Awesome, it was perfectly moist with just the right amount of fat .they like the fatty part of the meat in my household. So if was a good balance to please everyone. Really liked all the sauces . Thanks for the Great service!!

Sooo good! We picked up a 4 meat combo for dinner tonight and were really impressed with this place. The employees are very nice. Everything was delicious, tender, and juicy. My favorites were the pulled pork, brisket, hot links, and macaroni and cheese. The Mac and cheese is homemade and legit with real cheese. The bbq sauce is also really good. This is our new go to bbq spot. We are happy to have them in our neighborhood. Definitely recommend.
