Philly’s Best Barbecue Restaurants, According to Eater Editors | Eater Philly

I haven't eaten food here in years wasn't quite the same. Mac & cheese and greens had very little seasoning My ribs were nice and meaty but the famous BBQ sauce was watery under the ribs the potato salad was good. I was a little disappointed but would be willing to try it again maybe there was a different cook.

Let's get into this food 😋. My bad for the partially eaten ribs before taking the picture 📸. I had the long rib sandwich. Omg, those ribs had a good cook on them. The sauce was pretty good, had good flavor. That potato salad...... it was very good. Simple ingredients with good flavor and taste. Next time I might get a platter 🤷🏾‍♂️, but I wouldn't mind having this combination again. Good work 👏🏾

Google
Ridiculously overpriced for the quality of the food. We spent $70 for two half racks of ribs with two mediocre sides each. The mac and cheese was delicious, and I thought the green beans were pretty good, as well, but the ribs! The ribs were supposed to be the show piece of the meal, and they were seriously disappointing. They were individually cut and all dried out. I got the hot sauce and I thought it was okay but my husband got the mixed and he thought it tasted like vinegar. No matter what, it was not worth the money that we paid. Not for some stand on the side of the road. Seriously disappointed, and will never go back again.

The food was tasty and good, and it reminded me of being back home. I would call before you order just so that you won’t wait super long however food is amazing.

OMG the food was delicious! The Smokey taste of Ribs and sweeeeet potato pie I never tasted a better crust in 51 years and my people are from Mebane NC. My kin are famous fiddle players - Joe and Odell Thompson this sweet potato pie would probably inspire new music!

Google
I’ve never been to a soul food restaurant where it’s outdoor counter service only and you cannot see the selections or see the orders being prepared. I ordered a platter of 4 side orders $15. Portions were tiny. String beans straight from a can, WATERY, MUSHY AND NO TASTE.

Well, well, well. Let me tell you about this place. If I could have given this place no stars I sure would have. My cousins and I drove all the way to this place from Delaware County we were really looking forward to trying their food after we had heard about them on the channel 6 FYI. When we arrived at this place it was a little before opening. We began looking at the outside menu to get an idea of what we wanted to order. The lady( I guess she's the owner) came out saying we're not open yet. We already knew that!!! Duh... But she continued to tell us we could order on line and that she's trying to get things together. She was so very rude. She acted like she didn't even want us to look at the outside menu. We were willing to wait until she opened. Her attitude was so nasty. We started to just leave and go elsewhere. But, because we came so far we just decided to order. I wish we would have just left when we started to. The ribs was tough and the cabbage was bland and the string beans had no seasoning and the yams was too sweet. My other cousin got turkey wings which she said she didn't like either. The prices were ridiculous!!! That was our first and last time there. No one needs to deal with people treating you rude when you're spending your money. We tried to patronize our black owned businesses and this what we got. I won't be recommending them to my family or my friends.

Yelp
Got my usual, ribs and potato salad,it was delicious, there was a line but I met friendly people waiting for their food.

Yelp
these were theeee worst ribs i've everrr had!!! the sides were nasty! they have the nerve to charge $8 for a side of potato salad...which is probably nasty too!!! i heard rhe advertisement for this place everyday on my gospel station sooo the subliminal got the best of me...worst decision!!! now when i hear it i immediately frown!!! i actually asked the lady taking my order "are the ribs fork tender"!? she said "yes" not!!! i would never, ever again, and would discourage anyone who ask me about them!!! i wish i could post these pics, i'm going to find a way!!!

Yelp
I came in on Thursday 9/12/19 in search of some good ribs. I discretely asked the woman if the ribs were cooked today ( I do NOT like leftover meat, I rarely eat my own, the taste makes me sick to my stomach) she told me NO. After I got back to my destination I opened my platter and YES they were leftover reheated ribs. I did NOT eat or want any of my food the fact that I was lied to (just be honest) some people don't mind leftovers, all this to say - I wasted $19.44 on a platter. The macaroni was days old too, the the greens were fine and the cornbread was old and breaking up so much I just threw it away it was impossible to eat. I really hate leaving bad reviews but I also hate being lied too, I would of brought something that was cooked fresh and gave a good review.

Yelp
I decided to try this place and I came here at 2:30 on a Friday. As I stepped to the window to place my order for 2 slabs of ribs, the woman behind the glass stated "We don't have any. If you don't smell ribs, we don't have ribs". I would've been okay if she just said they were sold out and to come back at another time or offer their other meats.

Yelp
Charlie's is classic and always good food. It's soul food, so I can't exactly eat it often , but it is ALWAYS delicious no matter what you order. Prices are reasonable too

Yelp
Everyone was really nice here....expect to wait but there's not really any seating. It's basically take out platters and desserts. I got a veggie platter this time with mac and cheese, yams, greens and potato salad. Every bite was amazing and I can't wait to go back for an entree! It was very affordable as well, they give so much food for their price. All around great experience.

Yelp
This food was prepared just exactly like my grandmother used to prepare the Turkey wings were prepared just right the macaroni and cheese with perfectness the cornbread is great And the yams on the money great place to go get Something to eat neat And good service

Yelp
I usually order the ribs but you never know. Sometimes the ribs are nice and meaty and other times tough and you cannot eat. So it is the chance you take. At the prices I have decided not to take that chance. Will NOT be going to Charlie's anymore.

Yelp
Never an issue or complaint about Charlie's! I usually order a veggie platter and my husband usually orders the ribs platter. So good!

Yelp
I like Charlie's but it is a hit or miss. I've been going here off and on through out the years. Every visit is a different experience and it can get pricey. Let me start by saying the sweet potato pie is really good. That is the one constant I can give (if they have some left that day). The rest of the food and the service is another story. For starters when the food is good...it's really good. When it's not it's really not. Then there is the wait time and the rude staff. Depending on who's grandchild is behind the counter you may get a pleasant young person or a crabby teen who really don't want to be there anyway. (A word to the wise...don't force little Shane-qua to work in order to teach her responsibility. It's bad for business.)

Yelp
I ordered ribs, mac & cheese & collard greens. The ribs had lots of meat and were tender. My first time there. I enjoyed my platter. We got 3 short rib platters and my grandsons enjoyed their platters.

Yelp
Food was good although the beef ribs weren't very meaty.. Also, I placed my order (in person) and ordered a side of potato salad to go with. Someone called in an order right after and ordered potato salad as a side. Well after she realized there wasn't enough for two orders l, I was basically told there wasn't enough so I couldn't get the side. I personally feel as though I placed my order first so that second order should have been the one to select another option...

Yelp
I visited this place a few weeks back because of work. When I stepped in, I was instantly greeted with a huge smile and a big hello. This place was so welcoming; I would have recommended it even before I tasted the food, which was pretty good. They serve typical Southern fare: ribs, chicken, greens, pound cake, etc; I only tried the chicken wings and the cake and I recommend both. The place is pretty small and in a secluded area but definitely a warm and welcoming treat, a place to stop when you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of Philly.

Yelp
This is another rest. in a bad section of town and no parking lot. What's up with Philly and parking spaces???? I paid $21 here for ribs, collards, potato salad and cornbread. They made me pay extra for mac n cheese because they don't allow it as a side option. The sides and cornbread were all ok, but I did not like the ribs. They weren't quality ribs and were too mushy. The young girl running the counter had an attitude problem but she was very detail oriented. They do have a buffet style going and the food looked pretty tasty though excessively greasy. I might stop here again if I were in that area otherwise, it's not worth the long drive I made just for home style southern cooking.

Yelp
So the place is in the cut! When I reach there, there was a nice atmosphere. It really is a hole in the wall until you walk inand even then it's not spectacular. The food was already prepared and the time that they give you the food is pretty fast. However, the portion sizes for the amount of money that they want is absolutely ridiculous. Going on the recommendation from my aunt, I thought this was going to be The best barbecue in North Philly...boy was I wrong! The cornbread was dryer than the Sahara desert......the cabbage had NNNOOOOOO seasoning. The Mac.... Was ok... But it wasn't good enough to be charging $5for a medium side!!!! My rule of thumb is "I'm paying you to do what I can cook or better".... My plate was $13 and it wasn't good- on top of the attitude from the owner...who was so arrogant...(ok you own a hole in the wall in the hood) never again! Neverrrrr!

Yelp
One of Philly"s best kept secrets, for Soul food. Their ribs fall of the bone and their chops are meaty and tender. For southern style cooking it's top notch.

Yelp
I've been a customer of Charlie's Country Ribs for over 10 years now and the most important thing i can say about it is that the quality and overall taste of the food has never changed. It is consistently delicious each and every time I visited Denice and Charlie's restaurant. They really specialize in Southern Style cooking and the menu is very large compared to most Soul Food joints. Are you ready? You can get Fried and Barbecue Chicken, Barbecue Ribs, Chopped Barbecue, Pork Chops, Fried Fish, Cornish Hens, Pigs Feet, Beef Short Ribs, Ox Tails, Smoothed Turkey Wings, Limas,Collards, String Beans, Black Eyed Peas, Potato Salad, Yams, Mac & Cheese, Okra Corn and Tomatoes, Corn Bread etc. eye. etc. !!! And that's not counting Breakfast or Desserts and IT'S ALL GOOD!

Yelp
I've been going to Charlie's for a number of years. The food is good and sometimes very good. There were a few times when the greens were too sweet or they didn't put enough sauce on their expensive ribs. Goodness gracious, the ribs are good but not that good. The portions are small, even for a person like myself that never eats all of my food in one sitting...no leftovers here. With all that being said, I truly do not come here for great customer service. Charlie's wife is okay sometimes, but that chick with the short, blonde, hair will make Jesus lose his religion. Miss Thing, seriously, it won't kill you to be a little more nicer. If being nice to the customers is that difficult, do us all a favor and quit! On the other hand, the lady in the kitchen that cooks and preps is a sweetheart along with Charlie and the rest of the kitchen staff.

Yelp
I like it. I've only had fried whiting, greens and potato salad. I order the same thing every time. My family has tried other platters and they like it too. So Yummy

Yelp
Heard about this place from family members so decided to give it a try. I was not impressed. I got the pork rib platter with potato salad and greens. Everything was very mediocre. Had to "doctor up" everything with more seasoning to give it flavor. We paid $46 for 2 pork rib platters and 1 BBQ chicken breast platter (platters come with 2 sides). We also got an extra side of potato salad. I probably won't be going back. It's just not worth the money :-(

Yelp
I have been going to Mr Charlies since 97. Best soul food in philly. I always get the rib platter and switch up on the sides. The staff reminds you of the aunt who always speaks her mind but remains respectful. Dont let the neighborhood scare you off. Give them a try. you wont be disappointed.

Yelp
The place is awesome. People are friendly and the food is awesome. Location is a little rough and the place is small. The food and the price makes this place awesome.

Yelp
i have loved this restaurant for 11 years. the food is usually delicious. the only thing that has changed are the yams. they haven't been up to par - not cooked enough or sweet enough. i usually get turkey wings over rice and gravy, w/greens & potato salad. they never fail. and the mac & cheese is the best! although they have a couple of tables so u can eat in, i wouldn't suggest it. its VERY tight in there. just do a pick up. overall, i think its one of the best soul food restaurants in philly.
