The 7 Best Jacksonville, Florida Diners | Eater Miami

"Charlie’s Diner evokes nostalgia, akin to diners where grandparents brought their grandkids for good food and friendly service. The interior is relaxed, adorned with old-school posters, and ample seating. The menu boasts diner favorites, from breakfast sandwiches to country-fried steak and chili cheeseburgers. With meals typically ranging from $8 to $10 and nothing exceeding $13.50, Charlie’s offers both taste and affordability."

I ordered through DoorDash and my food was amazing! Fresh hot, very homemade comfort food. I was shocked at how much for the price as well. Definitely looking forward to bringing the family in person to have breakfast! As the lunch was amazing!

Had an amazing lunch today. This place has been on my list to try for a while. Charlie's Diner has old-school diner vibes with a checkerboard floor, red table tops, counter service, and a menu that is exactly what you'd expect.  The staff is very friendly and attentive. There are a lot of options on the menu, but I knew I came for the fried pork chops and fried squash, so I ordered those with a side of rice and gravy. I'll start with my favorite, the fried yellow squash. This is something you don't often find in restaurants.  Pieces were thick and huge. The batter was perfect and nicely seasoned. It did NOT even need the side of ranch that came with it. It was perfection. The pork chops were fried in the same batter as the squash. They were were tender and juicy on the inside and made my day.  Rice and gravy were just what you'd expect from an old school diner.  Really loved the gravy.  This whole meal was just comfort food and reminded me of long ago family dinners. All in all, I'll be adding Charlie's Diner to my regular rotation. It's a taste of home and I loved everything about it.

Google
Like Luke’s Diner meets Ted Lasso’s charm—warm, charming, and full of heart. We stumbled into this nostalgic gem on a recent trip to Jacksonville, and it felt like stepping into a scene from a cozy, favorite TV show. Think black-and-white checkered floors, vintage Coke bottles, and the kind of genuine hospitality that’s become far too rare. It had been a while since my husband and I have visited a true American diner, so we didn’t hold back—we got the omelette, biscuits and gravy, cheeseburger, and their creamy mac & cheese. Every bite was comfort food done right mixed with small-town warmth. In a world where polished chain restaurants are the norm, this mom-and-pop spot was a throwback dream. We’ll absolutely be back the next time we’re in town!

Another word of mouth kinda place. Mom & Pop operated. Real friendly staff, service was fast ! , taste of food, that’s your call, clean , diner as clean, & the restrooms are clean !

Google
Tried to order a few items on the menu and they weren’t available. Went for the variety of the menu and having 4 children with us with all different taste. Waitress was very nice but food wasn’t really that great. Chicken salad was the best out of the 5 dishes we got (chicken wrap, chicken salad sandwich, chicken tenders, burger and loaded fries with chicken and bacon)

Google
Such a cute place! 50s themed with posters of Marilyn, Elvis and James. Great service and food is tasty and solid. We enjoyed the sausage gravy and biscuits, the fried eggs, the veggie omelette and the general vibe in there! Recommend ☀️

Google
Tried today with friends as a new place to eat. I was sorely disappointed. I ordered the 3 chicken tenders with 2 sides. It was described on the menu as "Buffalo or plain/grilled or fried." I asked for fried and buffalo. What I got was cut up chicken smothered with onions and peppers with what may have been buffalo sauce. Being what I thought every red-blooded American is like, I expected whole chicken tenders, with breading and deep-fried. When I asked the waitress about it, she told me it was fried. Not worth an argument, but she was incorrect. $14 lesson for me to learn I will not go back.

A little slice of Americana. Great breakfast food with very friendly staff. Would recommend to anyone looking for a diner. Even has a drive thru!

Yelp
We are avoiding the toll roads to the airport and during a 30 mile stretch of nothing but circle k gas station food we found this great spot . We got omelets with some substitutes that had small add on charges and a side of sausage patties. The staff is very pleasant and our order was taken correctly. They serve Breakfast all day and have daily lunch specials.

Yelp
Pure Southern A meat and two sides. Food **** Service ***** (shout out to Bailey from PBC) Cleanliness ***** Value ***** Men (because it serves breakfast all day) ********** In the south, before sushi, before ramen, before hibachi, before Gastropub your choices were mostly two meats and a side. So for me, this was nostalgic but you know what else, the food was good. But better than that, they serve breakfast all day and who doesn't love a good breakfast at all times of the day? But you know what else? Specials include country fried steak, meatloaf, Salisbury steak, do I need to go on? Okay, thanks for taking a walk down memory lane: Grits - perfect consistency, great. Fried Squash - OUTSTANDING, get it and thank me later. Mashed Potatoes - always good. Pancakes - I ordered mine with blueberries, so good and plate size. Omelette - really fluffy, choice of cheese and Ingredients. Meatloaf - very tasty. Really, good solid comfort food. Plus for us, our server Bailey was so positive and upbeat, it made the experience better. She is all smiles and knew people by name, which

Yelp
Shoutout to the local heroes staffed here at Charlie's ! This venue is a four walled container of hospitality, good eats, and a neighborhood feel. I am a fan of diners! It's that kind of nostalgic and comforting going to eat with my grandparents feeling. I love that the kindness, friendly banter, and attentiveness of staff makes one feel welcomed. As I read the menu, I felt it fun and appealing to my foodie taste buds. My faves were represented like grits, chicken fried steak, biscuits and gravy, fried okra, corn nuggets, etc... and they even had cheese curds! I know it was breakfast, but it was also my first visit. The server was kind enough to ask the kitchen if it was ok to order some not normal breakfast items. Yes! The kitchen was able to fit in my specific request at least for me today. I excitedly ordered the fried combo and chose my three favorites okra, corn nuggets, and cheese curds. Then I asked for chicken tenders, grits, and fruit. I was amazed by these cheese curds!!! The perfect crispy batter and the choicest chewy, stretchy, and just enough salty that you don't need any sauce! I just went to a fancy restaurant recently and Charlie's cheese curds win hands down! I did tell our server to pass on my compliments! The okra tasted fresh and still had crunchy texture. The corn nuggets were balanced with whole kernel corn and batter. The fruit tasted fresh, sweet, the correct texture, and refreshing. And the came the chicken tenders! I can tell these were meant to be a meal... these giant strips of white meat was lightly battered, crispy outside, and juicy inside. A generous serving of protein! I did need to take some home for a snack later on. And the grits were delicious and had the proper texture! Now, my hubby helped me out and ordered some of my favorites so that I could sample: savory sausage gravy and fluffy biscuits, and an extra patty of sausage. It was all so satisfying with cups of hot coffee that was attentively keep warm with refills. The patrons were all happy and I could tell that Charlie's had a lot of regulars as people chuckled, called out people by name and orders, and genuinely asked about each other's lives all aloud and cheerfully. I am glad that hubby brought me here! It was a great start to the day! Our Charlie's ambassador today was the one and only, Ms Bailey G. and she is part of Spirit that makes this venue have a special spot in my heart! We look forward to coming back for more favorites like liver and onions, black eyed peas, Mac and cheese, etc .... And more cheese curds :)

Yelp
It may not look like much from the outside, but it is certainly worth stopping! Inside is the black and white checked floor, a bookcase full of paperbacks, a basket of coloring books for the kids; overall, a nice family restaurant. Our server, Bailey, was smiling, energetic, and very helpful. The food was very good and very plentiful. Nice grits and tomatoes to go with the meals. Give it a try. You won't be disappointed

Yelp
Perfect breakfast spot we had been searching for wonderful grits and eggs. Hot coffee and raised toast my favorite and will be back to this little diner gem!

Robert H.

Yelp
Poor food. Ordered chicken fried steak. Straight out of the freezer. Gravy canned. Wife ordered tuna sandwich. Tasted ok but too much mayo. Server was straight out of the fifties. Looked light she had been there forever. Called us "hon". Extra star for that.

Yelp
A local restaurant with a homey decor. We knew the food would be good as there were regular customers that were called by name. Bailey was our server and she was so sweet and friendly. The other server was also friendly as she acknowledged us as we left. My husband had the biscuits and gravy. I had the Western Omelet with hashbrowns. It was all very good and served hot, so we know it didn't sit in the kitchen very long after being plated. Will definitely go back.

Yelp
This is a must try! I love this place for breakfast or lunch. Staff is always so nice and friendly. They make you feel like family! Bonus - food is incredible every time!! I love supporting local business.

Yelp
Having Saturday brunch delivered to you is the best feeling after a long week. I really wanted to not leave my bed so I got out my delivery app and went searching. I settled on Charlie's Diner as their menu looked really good and down-home. I chose the Country Girl Breakfast Plate (Grits smothered in sausage gravy, cheddar cheese, three eggs, bacon or sausage, toast or biscuit) as it sounded right up my alley. Boy, I ate most of the meal and it laid me out. I had to take a nap to recover from the overwhelming, delicious, simple homecooking. I couldn't even eat it all but I'm glad I went with them.

Candi M.

Yelp
I wish I could give this hidden gem more than 5 stars! The food was delicious and the service was unmatched! All of the staff was pleasant and made the experience better! I wish I could recall our servers name she was fantastic! We needed for nothing! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Ate their first breakfast a few days ago. Fast service, good food and reasonably priced. Place sits off the side of road and not easily noticed. Have never saw advertisements for it or heard people talk about it. Seemed to be clean and mostly in good shape. Noticed issues in men's bathroom that should be corrected though.

Yelp
Great taste, portions and service. Bailey was our server and she's awesome. At one time she was the only person taking care of all the tables and the service was supreme and with a huge smile. Since, we've come back and will continue to do so. The establishment is kept very clean, noticeable as soon as you open the door.
google avatar

Yelp
Very cool old school style diner! The food was great and came out quickly. Our server was so sweet too.
google avatar

Anthony B.

Yelp
Was not a great lunch experience. With not a lot of customers it took a very long time to have our food come out. Might have been better if it never came out. The Buffalo shrimp was not good. Worst I've ever had. Maybe this is a good breakfast place.

Yelp
Great Saturday morning family destination. The diner has a super cute retro vibe with some red and black booths, a juke box and classic photos. The service is great with only one server handling heaps of table with some back up from the busser/sometimes server. The food is delicious and the prices are practically throwbacks. The menu has your staples, like omelettes, pancakes, waffles, grits, French toast, sausage and gravy, and also corn beef hash. There is a nice lunch menu we haven't explored yet. There are books to grab, some outside seating and friendly diners nearby. We just discovered this gem and would join a Charlie's Club if they had one!

Yelp
Hubby got the country fried steak breakfast and I got the Philly omelet. Both very delicious! Coffee is good, too. Warning on the men's restroom! Hubby was squirted when he flushed the urinal! LOL! Gross! Women's restroom was clean. Server was sweet. There are books at the entry incase you wanna drink coffee and stay, I guess!

Yelp
Not impressed. Stopped by for lunch. Mediocre food was not worth the price. Got a better and cheaper burger at Wendy's.

Yelp
Charlie's is exactly what I'm looking for in a classic diner- great food and vintage atmosphere. I went to Charlie's on Black Friday morning with my wife, and we had a wonderful breakfast. Our server, Missie, was essentially a friendly grandmother getting us breakfast. I order French toast with bacon and eggs, and my wife ordered country fried steak with potatoes, eggs, and a biscuit. My French toast was amazing- the perfect balance of sweet and savory, among the best I've had at a diner. The eggs were fine, but the bacon I had was cooked to death. In retrospect, I should have complained, but we were in a bit of a hurry so I just ate it and moved on. Honestly, since the French toast was so good, it didn't matter all that much, but next time, I'll try the sausage instead. My wife thoroughly enjoyed her country fried steak and had enough leftovers for another two small meals. I enjoyed her biscuit the next day, and it was still soft and delicious. The diner itself is fairly clean, has ample seating, and is full of 50s and 60s kitsch like movie posters, pinups, and a jukebox. There's ample parking and there was no wait to be seated, which is always a plus. If you're riding down Philips Highway and are in the mood for an outstanding breakfast, stop at Charlie's and enjoy yourself. I'm already looking forward to going back!

Olga S.

Yelp
A nice cozy retro place with tasty comforting food. Friendly staff, fast service. I had mushroom omelette and it was delicious. I'm coming back for dinner to try liver with onions!

Yelp
Service is great, it gives an older vibe but it's nice, the food is good, and is overall a nice place

Yelp
If you're driving down Philips Highway and blink, you might miss it. But if you do happen to come upon Charlie's Diner, I'd say it's worth dropping in for a delicious breakfast or lunch. The decor is definitely a throwback to the old diner days of Anytown USA. I felt a rush of nostalgia with the checkerboard flooring, the pics of '50s-'60s autos and Marilyn Monroe, the old school bar and stools with a view of the kitchen. It had a laid-back feeling, for sure. The staff was very nice and attentive as well. For my meal, I went with a combination plate - Two eggs over medium, with hash browns (subbed for grits), and biscuits and gravy for my bread choice. It was very filling without feeling overstuffed, and a good amount of food for the price I paid. Eggs were cooked perfectly; the hash browns had a different texture than what I expected - I think I was picturing the type you'd find at a Denny's or IHOP, but these were a bit softer and smaller, definitely made-to-order...still good; biscuits and gravy were delicious, a bit thrown off because the biscuit had a more "cakey" texture, but it tasted great with the sausage gravy on top. Overall, I liked that they take time and effort with their food because my breakfast was delicious. I'd definitely be back to try their country fried steak or corned beef hash dishes when I'm even more famished!

Yelp
This adorable diner was highly recommended for a great breakfast. We visited for lunch and I cannot wait to go back for breakfast, brunch, or another good lunch. The menu has so many nice choices of sandwiches, burgers, salads, and some diner meal favorites. I chose one of the specials, a buffalo shrimp salad. It was a huge fresh mixed green salad topped with tender, fried, spicy shrimp and cheese. Every bite was just right and oh so yummy. The salad was accompanied with warm pita bread corners. My friend had the chicken salad melt which we would also highly recommend. Even though the menu has a recommendation of marble rye with swiss cheese, you can customize any sandwich with bread choices, cheese choices, and all of the toppings being optional or substituted. Our server was very efficient, friendly, and excellent. Overall we are very impressed with Charlie's Diner.

Doug B.

Yelp
the best part the food.. Omg the food was on point very much like mom cooks it. We had a little problem with a omelette but the owner fixed it with out even saying anything. ( very impressive). I would recommend this place 100 %. The dinner was great you walk in the door and it's a walk into the past. You get too sit yourself. I picked a spot that I could see the kitchen. The staff was very busy.. Atmosphere was so cools people all know each other and if they don't you feel welcome... The sign was hard to find the way it's positioned back a little. We had a great time here thank you for keeping the American dinner alive. Good luck on your new business...

Yelp
My favorite local diner. The service is the best and the ambiance has a classic feel. Everything I had been great. I go with the hamburger steak with 3 eggs. Plus it's a local business.

Yelp
Sorry no pics. Because I inhaled my delicious food! Lol! Charlie's Diner is officially one of my go to places for comfort food and nostalgia

Yelp
Small diner on Phillips highway, very retro on the inside. Looks like a classic diner. I got the hearty breakfast, $14 for a lot of food and includes a coffee. Enjoyed everything, service was good.

Yelp
I am a fan of Charlie's Diner. It was one random morning... hubby and I just wanted to have a nice hearty breakfast. We decided against our usual breakfast places, feeling adventurous, we checked on Yelp and saw Charlie's Diner. We were greeted and seated upon walking in by the friendly server. Browsing through their menu, we decided to try the Country Boy's Breakfast (hubby) and Country Girl's Breakfast (me). Then on top of that, I can't help but wanting to sample their French Toast.... so yeah, the server nicely reminded us that the portions are big and we reassured her we wanted the French Toast and probably will end up taking some leftovers home lol.... I really enjoyed all the dishes we ordered. We wanted something of a hearty, down to earth, greasy spoon type breakfast and we got them.... and not even that greasy. The 'scramble' type bowls we got, I enjoyed mine (which came with grits) more than hubby's (came with potatoes). The French Toast was also done nicely. No frill, fru fru syrup or sauce etc, just the way I like it. And everything was priced so reasonably that makes me a fan of Charlie's Diner. A great local place to have a hearty meal.

Yelp
I love diner food. Plain, simple and just good. Hubby wanted breakfast today before work and I looked on Yelp for some suggestions and Charlie's popped up! We made it there before 9am- a goal for eating breakfast on Sunday and the parking lot was near empty. This diner is off Philips Hwy and a stand alone building, off the beaten path for sure. As we walked up tot he front door I admired the half picnic tables out front- painted red, very cute. Inside the checkered floor greeted us- someone called out a greeting and advised us to sit wherever we liked. We sat and started taking in the menu as our server came over to take our drink order right away. The juke-box in the corner was calling, it looked functional and I was tempted slip a quarter in and pick a tune! I ordered the Country Boy Bowl- a bed of homefries, with cheese, scrambled eggs and bacon- I asked for the country gravy on the side and a biscuit as my bread. It arrived steaming and was just a good hardy breakfast. Hubby ordered the sampler- three meats, eggs and grits with a biscuit too. There was no talking once the food came- hubby buttered his grits and dove into his plate. Eating in silence is always a good sign. As we worked our way through our breakfast a steady stream of patrons entered and took up tables. I can worry when a place isn't full in the parking lot- in this case we truly did beat the rush. Folks coming in straight from church. We also looked at the other side of the menu and may have to come back another day for lunch! A new-great find!

Yelp
I was recommended Charlie's by a friend who raved about their barbeque. I ordered via GrubHub online the red beans and rice special with green beans and potato salad. The restaurant is located off Phillips Highway in a small building, but there is plenty of seating when you walk inside. I only had to wait a few minutes for the woman to get my order and pack it in a bag for me. She mentioned that it had been a long wait for me for my food, over an hour, but I didn't realize this because I had ordered from work and wasn't in a hurry to go and pick it up until I was notified by GrubHub. The food was delicious, very fresh, and I really liked the red beans and rice and the potato salad. The green beans didn't have flavoring to them, so they weren't my favorite item. I would order from them again, and I'd like to try their breakfast too.
google avatar

Julie S.

Yelp
What not to like about simple, good food. This diner has all the comforts of home if that is what you are looking for. The breakfasts are plentiful and delicious. The omelettes are chock full of ingredients and are served hot right from the kitchen (would have gotten 5 stars, but had to send back my toast as I asked it served dry and it came slathered in butter, so I wasn't able to enjoy it with my eggs). If you are going for lunch, might I suggest one of their salads as they are huge, fresh and yummy. The staff is down to earth and delightful. It's a clean, quick and friendly place to have a nice meal.

Karen L.

Yelp
I Yelped "Country Fried Steak" and this one came up. I looked cute with decent reviews. I called in an order for CFS with Sausage Gravy, Mashed Potatoes and Green Beans. Everyone was so nice when I went to pick up my meal. The food: CFS - Pretty delicious! The batter was crispy, it was slightly different texture than what I'm used too, which didn't bother me. It was also a smaller portion of CFS, which again did not bother me. I enjoyed it. Mashed Potatoes - Yum! But I wish I had more gravy in my togo container. It was very tasty though Green Beans - Probably my favorite of the meal. Has very amazing flavor, and the texture was right on! Overall, this was a very enjoyable meal. I'd definitely go back. Check it out all!

Yelp
I've came for breakfast here few weeks ago and it was really good. So we decided to try the "famous" bbq for lunch. I had the pulled pork and my gf got the turkey. I will say our sides were great. Fries, slaw, tots & green beans. I can tell you right now that meat was not smoked today. My pork was so dry is was like eating a paper towel, the turkey was the same. We asked for bbq sauce. We were told they only have "hot mustard and these"(see pic) tiny bottles. So not thinking the "these" would be hot or crazy spicy, my gf who has Crohne's used the sauce. Both were crazy hot. Did not go well for her. Wasn't even given a warning about the sauce. I asked for ketchup and was told I couldn't get one of the bottles that were in the fridge but little sauce containers(okay, weird) I asked for a cheeseburger medium rare for a replacement. It came within minutes looking done but no, it was raw. When I cut it half it bled like I had hit an artery.. I gave it a chance and bit into it and it all mushed out into my mouth because it wouldn't hold together and was cold in the middle. I gave it back also. The server apologized because she was new, she did her best. So upon my gf returning her plate because she didn't eat her food because of the turkey was paper towel dry and BOTH of mine returned. After a good a 10 minute wait, we overhear the other server telling a customer about how spicy the sauces were and to be careful, that customer actually got up and left. We finally get the bil and I will say we did eat the sides and had teas, just seems petty. The server said "this is what I was told I had to put on the check". SHE gets high marks...

Yelp
My wife and I stopped in to Charlie's Diner on Friday morning. We were greeted warmly and our server, David, was very friendly and prompt. We ordered breakfast and enjoyed a very good cup of coffee while awaiting breakfast. David warmed our coffee and when breakfast arrived it was hot, fresh and very tasty. We left saying we would be back. We were in town because my Mom had been admitted to Hospice care a few miles from the diner. Saturday morning on the way to the Hospice center my wife suggested we return to Charlie's. We were warmly greeted by David and Bailey. Bailey served us another great breakfast, coffee and sweet tea to go. We explained our situation with my Mom and Bailey graciously "comped" our meal. I have tears in my eyes just writing this! I highly recommend Charlie's not only for their food and coffee but for their friendly, professional, aware staff! Thanks Bailey, David and the rest of the crew-you made a difficult time easier to bear!

Yelp
I've never dined in here, only takeout but EVERY SINGLE TIME the food is hot, fresh, and so good! I have not had a bad item yet. Best pancake in jax!!!!!

Yelp
Was looking forward to breakfast but the owner can't get out of bed. The employee had been waiting outside for over half an hour. If you can't be there for your staff and customers, change your hours.

Tracy M.

Yelp
My Father suggested we stop, we are so glad we did!!!! The BEST service and BEST food we've had anywhere in town!!!!!! We will be on the other side of town and travel past all of the other places to eat just to go to Charlie's!!!!! Tracy and Pappa give it 10 stars! We are there atleast twice a week after Dr appointments. the Gals are the best! Charlie is great, it's like going home for a comfort meal!

Yelp
Was craving some quick diner food earlier this morning and spotted this little gem. Simple and delicious diner food and well worth my stop on my mornings errands. I had me their 2pc French toast combo with scrambled egg whites, bacon and a LARGE orange juice! Didn't last very long because I ended up inhaling it but I'll be bringing my roommates back for a morning breakfast soon. Lastly I appreciate the service and happy faces (even though covered with a mask ) from the staff there.
