"You’re at Charmaine’s for the view, or that and because you’re a guest at the Proper Hotel. The rooftop bar has solid enough food, like sliders with kimchi Thousand Island and lemongrass wings. But the best way to enjoy this place is to stake out a couch or fire pit, gaze out on Market Street, and keep a steady rotation of stiff fruity cocktails on hand. "A rooftop bar that isn’t El Techo is the gift we all deserve. Charmaine’s, in the San Francisco Proper Hotel, is upscale without feeling pretentious, and has excellent views of City Hall and down Market Street. The crowd can be a bit corporate (it is a hotel bar, after all), but that doesn’t make the cocktails any weaker or less delicious. "Located on top of the Proper Hotel, the views from this Mid-Market rooftop bar are fantastic. And aside from that—and having great cocktails—it’s a good place to cozy up next to a fire pit at night. "When you want to drink with a view, you can (illegally) brown bag it at the top of a hill, or, to avoid almost getting hit by a scooter every two blocks, you can go to Charmaine’s instead. While this place is more of a nighttime spot, the view from the Proper Hotel is just as spectacular during the day. Plus, the sun can warm you up if there are no seats by a fireplace outside. Head inside to check out the Alice In Wonderland and Mad Men-inspired space and order a Nature Boy with passion fruit and rye at the bar while you’re there." - will kamensky, nic strain 2
"There’s always a line to get up to Charmaine’s at night, but we also like to come here in the afternoon to see the amazing view from atop the Proper Hotel. And since it’s always windier than a Mariah Carey/Shakira crossover music video up here, at least during the day you’ve got the sun to help you stay warm. If you’re set on getting cocktails here at night though, the firepits are nice to sit around and they have blankets too." - will kamensky
