"It was Eid earlier this month, so I decided to splurge on some delivery for myself and tried Charoen Express. The omelet kra pow is a mighty dish: the various flavors and textures of the egg, ground chicken, vegetables, and rice worked together beautifully. The garlic spicy green beans with fried tofu were legit fiery and the Thai tea rightly sweet. I set up an earlier delivery time through Uber Eats (the only third-party delivery service that would actually come to my neighborhood surprisingly) because I didn’t trust Austin traffic, but I’d recommend eating it as soon as you get it so that the sticky rice is fresher. —NC" - Nadia Chaudhury, Erin Russell

"Charoen Express is a new Thai ghost kitchen in Austin offering a variety of Thai dishes such as curries, noodles, stir-fries, soups, and appetizers. The restaurant operates on a takeout and delivery model due to the pandemic. Previously, the co-owner and chef Char Chongchitmate worked at Thai Lada and Madam Mam’s." - Nadia Chaudhury

Yelp
Perfectly serviceable ghost kitchen Thai fare with good portion sizes. The beef was the best part of my massaman curry, which was overall a bit on the sweet side. Sweet is fine, I just wish there was more going on. Skip the crab rangoons, they're nothing to write home about. We ordered at the site and still got our food fairly quickly, which is good.

Yelp
The best Pad Thai in Austin! It is so delicious and the portions are generous! Charoen is located in a ghost kitchen setup so there are many other restaurants in the same building which is a plus but was confusing the first time we ordered. Ordering online is easy and pick up is a breeze. You'll get a text with your locker number and a code which will open your locker up with your food. Be aware that they prepare your order quickly so it might say 20 mins but it will be ready in like 15.

Yelp
They might have my favorite Tom Kha and Pad Thai in town! Ok so the ghost kitchen concept is genius. And I know it was a thing even before Covid. But it's really working for the restaurants that operate that way since the overhead is low, they are solely available for take out or delivery, and they can cook up a storm of their very best and offer it to us foodies! My food arrived HOT and beautifully packaged. The Tom Kha soup - the perfect blend of coconut milk, kaffir lime, spice, veggies and chicken. I licked my bowl to the last drop! Pad Thai - first off it was huge! Omg my mouth watered as I ate my half (shared with my hubs). Truly exceptional in every way. I've had my fair share of pad Thai across town and this is now at the top of my list. Beef Penang - it was spicy but in a good way! Loved the huge chunks of beef that came with it. Also, this was thicc and creamy and I'd definitely eat it again. Mango & sticky rice - they've got it and IT IS A MUST! I loved that the sticky rice was a pretty shade of purple too! Mango and sticky rice is such a perfect combo! Please order from them soon and let me know if you agree with the above. Oh a little birdie told me they have the best crab rangoons in town so I'll order those next time!

Yelp
Strictly utility Thai. The kind of food the office orders in for lunch. * * * Charoen is one of the nameless faceless food providers at 5610 I-35. This is one of those no-dining room delivery-or-pickup only conglomerate kitchens. They have a bunch of different names and menus for the food you get. I suspect many of those names and menus are different names for the same people and the same company. Pickup was surprisingly klugey. Charoen Express only allows ordering through Chowhound ... And treats orders as if "Chowhound" ordered them. This includes food you intend to pick up yourself. I sat around the waiting room of 5610 waiting for my order to be ready Because I was silly enough to think that the restaurant would actually list my food under my name. I actually have to pretend I am "Chowhound" to get my food. Live and Learn. * * * My wife had cashew vegetables with no cashews. She looked superhard for the cashews. Her vegetables tasted okay ... But she was not happy. My Massaman Curry was the same Massaman Curry you can get anywhere else in town. It kept me fed. In contrast, the Thai Brussels Sprouts were insane. Granted lots and lots of people make really good Brussels Sprouts in this town. But these were really really really good. I inhaled mine. * * * I am not sold on the ghost kitchen concept. I like me a dining room with atmosphere and character. Part of going out to eat is frankly ... Going OUT to eat. Places count. * * * As food, 5610 tends to provide middle of the road not unacceptable fare. If you are doing Doordash, you don't have to settle for middle of the road not unacceptable fare. You can order from some place really good. If you are doing personal pickup, Then you want to be near 5610 I-35. If my office was near 5610 I-35, And we were ordering in for lunch ... I would be thinking ... I "could" order from Capn Benny's which is really good seafood and reasonably priced. If that would be too stiff for my budget, there is Amaya's Taco Village - which is a first rate Tex-Mex establishment. Yeah, 5610 exists and the food is not terrible. But I could do better.

Yelp
Tried this place for the first time and got the omelette pork kra prow, and was pretty disappointed. Let's start with the good. Easy order and pick up (even though it took an hour to get the food even though they said 30 minutes). The portions were also pretty big, making the prices worth it. But my food was very salty and too much mushroom, more than the meat. The fried egg is also soggy by the time I got it, which was sad because I was looking forward to crispy sides of the eggs.

Yelp
Charoen Express is a ghost restaurant operating out of a building off of I-35. I ordered my food through ChowNow and it said it would take 50 minutes to prepare my order. I was surprised that the software didn't give me this time estimate BEFORE I ordered so that I could decide whether I wanted to order still. I arrived at the ghost kitchen location at the time they specified. After signing in on their tablet to alert them that I was there, I waited another 30 minutes before my food was ready. The actual food (green curry, crab rangoons) was fine. Nothing amazing but not horrible. The prices are a little high for being a to-go business with no dine-in experience or ambiance. Overall, I would not return to Charoen mainly because of the poor ordering experience and long wait time to get my food.

Yelp
Food for days. And when I say days, I mean a week, as I ordered on a Monday night and dusted off the last bit of food the following Monday. The mango sticky rice was devoured immediately. I only meant to eat a bit of it but I couldn't stop going back for more! The Drunken Brisket was very salty but because I ate it over a week, the salt didn't bother me. I also much preferred the brisket heated up can when it came fresh. The noodles, mushrooms, and sauce made me drunk with delight. Garlic spicy green bean dish was my fave of the bunch. Good kick and good flavor. Excellent ratio of rice to protein. Portions were made for a family of at least 3...me, myself, and I were fully satisfied with our delivery order.

Yelp
One of my favorite Thai take outs in Austin PERIOD!! They sometimes do buy one get one free deals on the Uber app and of course I have to take advantage. The crab rangoons are sooo crunchy on the outside and creamy and savory on the inside, I get them almost every time. The Thai tea is also delicious, sweet, and creamy and looks cool when you first mix it. For the entree, the pad see ew, the omelet, the curries are all good! Every time I order from them I try to get something new but I'm running out of options, good thing everything is delicious. Also, you can't really go wrong with mango sticky rice but this place likes to dye their rice so it has a cool indigo hue. Very Instagram worthy!

Lee Roy C.

Yelp
I'll start with the good. The ordering and pickup process is easy and convenient. We had the pad kra pow with omelet, which was full of flavor, had great texture, and was overall very delicious. It's got a good amount of kick, too. A few of the misses. The beef pad see ew ( my favorite Thai dish) was bland. The noodles looked pale and lacked sauce, and the beef to noodle ratio was also disappointing for the price. We also got the wings with a tamarind based sauce. They were soggy and felt a little undercooked. The sauce tasted fine, but because the wings were already too soggy for my liking, the sauce made the dish a bit slimy and unappetizing.

Kenny N.

Yelp
Bland, tasteless food. I'm not even considering whether it's authentic or not - it obviously is not. The food itself is just complete devoid of flavor and the portion size is criminally small. The $19 Drunken "Brisket" had, maybe, 2 very thin slices of very fatty brisket in it. You could have gotten half a pound of actual brisket + sides from Franklin BBQ for $17. The chicken wings were somehow doughy and soggy at the same time while also being devoid of any flavors. It tasted as if they seasoned it with just more dough. Most of the times when I don't enjoy a dish, I can usually plausibly chalk it up to a matter of taste. This time, it is not a matter of taste. The food is just really really bad and the people who made it should feel bad, especially for what they are charging for it. This is one of the handful of times where I have actually regretted spending money on food.

Jamie L.

Yelp
The food here is amazing!! Super reasonable prices as well. I ordered takeout and got the TOm kha gai, pad Thai, and Bangkok fried rice and everything is so good and flavorful. The Tom kha gai is my favorite- it's rich and creamy, lemony, sour, and will cause you to eat a lot of rice! The fried rice is delicious as well. The pad Thai was good, but a bit too Smokey for my preference. It tastes they they may have smoked the meat. Overall, very solid meal and we ordered for 2 people and only ate half, so the portions are good for two meals! I will be ordering again for sure.

Christopher F.

Yelp
Larb isn't larb. Pork larb rhines are lame, especially for $4. There larb wings were disappointing. Not Thai. Not 4 stars.

Bo B.

Yelp
This ghost kitchen was way better than the reviews made them out to be. Food: Pad kra prow - so delicious Crab fried rice - good Mango sticky rice - delicious

Anthony M.

Yelp
"Wow". Those were the words uttered out of my mouth when I recently ordered Charoen to-go for dinner. Unbelievable. The food exceed expectations and more. What I got was: - Drunken Brisket: they take linguini noodles, add basil, stir them in garlic, and add Smokin Beauty's brisket for a rich, flavorful dish that blew my mind. It contrasts so well. This one is a limited time collab, so don't miss out on it!! - Pad Thai: what can I say? This may have been some of the best pad Thai I've ever had as well. This one differs from the drunken brisket because it's more light and a variety of tangy, spicy, and sweet flavors. - Tom Yum Soup: this hot and sour soup was interesting. It comes with an array of herbs such as lemongrass and kaffir lime leaf which made it a light, herbal dish. It was my first time having tom yum, too! - Mango Sticky Rice: this was my first time ever having mango sticky rice. I always been hesitant about the dish, but it actually went down better than I thought. The rice is sweet, not savory, so it works. It comes with a coconut cream to top off too. You gotta get this! Charoen Express isn't your ordinary Thai restaurant though! There's no dine-in as they are a ghost kitchen! Which means they only operate through online orders from GrubHub, DoorDash, UberEats, Favor, etc. I wouldn't think too much on this as it's not an indication of quality. In fact, it's a smart way for newer businesses to see if their ideas can be successful since they pay less rent than a traditional establishment. With that said, I was highly satisfied with what I got here. The prices are fair, the food was amazing, the portions were great, and the menu selection is wide. I give them a strong 5/5 for being outstanding!

Yelp
That this place has a 4-star rating tells me we are heading towards a future where people just don't know or recognize what authentic / decent food is anymore. This food is made in a facility that houses dozens of "restaurants" that use delivery services to peddle their McFood to a generation of button clickers that don't know their ass from their elbow when it comes to food. The food sucks and they charge $18 for a PINT of curry.

Steven L.

Yelp
My company provided a Uber Eats gift card for a remote team lunch so I decided to try something new! Most of the menu looked pretty standard but limited at first, although I did not realize until after I ordered that there was a separate tab for the all-day menu (I was on the lunch menu). Many of the appetizers and the curries were not listed on the lunch menu. Regardless, I went with a classic dish and a more unique dish: Pad See Ew w/ shrimp - large pieces of shrimp, wide flat noodles with just the right amount of chewiness, very flavorful sweet and salt altogether. My only nitpick about this dish is that the Chinese broccoli was mostly stems, not enough broccoli floret (is that the right term?). Pad Kra Pow w/ fried tofu on top of Thai omelet - this dish is pretty standard but I had not ever seen it with the Thai omelet so I decided to give it a go. Very tasty, maybe slightly over-sauced towards the end as the rice soaked up too much of the sauce, but that's better than the alternative of not enough sauce. Overall, the quality of the dishes was very good, I need to go back to try some other dishes (especially the curry). It's slightly pricier than some other Thai places I like, but I imagine this restaurant has consistently good quality compared to the cheaper options.

Marcia L.

Yelp
Oh man! Well I was hoping for a good quality Thai place but this was a big disappointment. I ordered shrimp spring tropes and I've never seen such a poor job! Over stuffed with noodles and lettuce and only one shrimp cut in half. For the price come on! The brussel sprouts no better just soggy with what ever sauce the drenched it in. Horrible experience!

Anthony V.

Yelp
Ghost kitchen with absolutely disgusting and overpriced food. Paid $18 for an overcooked plate of fried-rice with THREE, count 'em, THREE pieces of chicken in the entire dish. This is one of those places that will make their money in the 3 months they're "open," change their name, and then continue to make shitty food. Pay attention to the constantly shifting address. Right now it's the 5610 food co, 5610 N Interstate Hwy 35, Austin, TX. Nothing of quality will come from there.

Yunny D.

Yelp
We were so excited to hear that there would be a close Thai restaurant so we went ahead and gave them a shot. We ordered the beef panang curry which was on the pricier side but was so delicious and very spicy, so definitely not for the faint of heart. The beef could have been more tender but was still easy to piece apart to eat. This dish reminded us of another popular Thai restaurant in town. We also had the tofu which I was really looking forward to but they were really small pieces of fried tofu. They were good but the portion was so small for the price. I expected a lot more tofu for $7. We also had the pad kaprow which had the right flavors but the execution was not as good as we had hoped. The pork was fried out and over cooked. Almost like it was already cooked and then recooked for the dish. Overall we would be happy to try them again as we loved their beef panang but everything else was meh.

Kimberly B.

Yelp
I drove 45 mins downtown just to try this place and I was very disappointed. I mainly came for the pad thai. However, since UberEats had a BOGO free for selected appetizers, I decided to take two orders of crab Rangoon. The crab Rangoon were OP! I believe there are 6 pcs. in one order. They were absolutely creamy, crispy, and not too sweet. I was just confused on the side sauce. It did not complement the sweet flavor of the crab Rangoon. As a pad Thai connoisseur, I thought the chicken pad thai was a bit bland. No unique flavor to it. I started worrying if I had COVID because I could not taste anything flavorful. I'd say this place is average. I had a hard time finding it because it is a ghost kitchen, not a singular restaurant so no sign outside of the actual place. You order via pickup (I ordered using UberEats), turn right when you see the ubereats digital sign, and sign in on the iPad to pick up your food.

Fernando M.

Yelp
The pad thai suffered from such a lack of flavor that the best explanation is unfortunately like we were served the noodles straight from the boiling water with some bean sprouts and a slice of lime for garnish. The ingredients were completely disconnected from each other. Think microwave ramen, but without the broth. Topped off with mushy egg rolls, and the tom kha soup was more like a thick curry which tasted ok.

Cejay Z.

Yelp
Food is pretty good. Disappointed by the small portion sizes. Ordered extra shrimp on my Pad Thai and was charged $3 for the 3 small shrimp in picture. Extra rice is $2 per bowl, which is more reasonable but unfortunate because the rice they give with their curry dishes is too little.

Bua V.

Yelp
I eat here like every other day, my favorite is tom yum tofu, beef fried rice, goyza and of course the mango sticky rice!!!! Highly recommend, delicious every time I order. Definitely coming back okur

Andrea G.

Yelp
This place had great food, it seems like a classic thai takeout option to me. It's straight forward and you know what to expect of your food. I had the pad thai which had the best flavor I've ever had in pad thai. However, it's my personal preference that pad thai have an assortment of vegetables. This doesn't have any vegetables, just noodles, green onion, bean sprouts, peanuts, lime and your choice of protein. I chose tofu and it was cooked perfectly. I also had the mango sticky rice, it wasn't overly sweet but I think it could use extra sauce or a sweetened condensed milk for sweetness on the side as well. But that's just my personal preference, the mango was in the peak of ripeness and the rice was sticky and sweet. I'll definitely come back. Everything was great, even if it didn't meet my personal preferences!

Jerusalem F.

Yelp
The pork larb was very disappointing. It takes more like sweet and sour ground pork. It was missing main ingredients for larb such as mint, cilantro, lemongrass etc.. This larb had red bell pepper and a very strong sweet sauce. I can't speak for other dishes they serve but if you know what larb is supposed to taste, don't get this dish.

Lillian W.

Yelp
their kra pow with an omelette is soo good!!! we got one with and without the omelette and it really makes such a difference! also the portion sizes for their lunch menu items are huge, you could probably eat 2 meals from each one! they have a bogo thing on uber eats that i think changed with meal times and that really makes it sooo worth it!! i'm only giving it 4 stars because to me some of the flavors were a little bland in the pad thai, and the papaya salad was good but different (less tangy) than what im used to, but i would totally consistently order from them for a really convenient/solid/delish lunch!

Charisse T.

Yelp
The ghost kitchen concept was so cool and easy, you just login on one of their iPads and then at the counter, your food is waiting for you. I got the Pad Se Ew and it was so delicious, their portions are large I was able to save half for tomorrow. Charoen Express reminds me of the mom and pop Thai places where I grew up, it's so delicious. Eager to have more!

Darche J.

Yelp
Not sure what's up with the ghost kitchen, or where to start when it comes to the organization but this is my second occurrence when my order shows as ready & I've arrived in anticipation of enjoying my chow to only be disappointed that my food wasn't ready. A simple text and or some form of communication would be suffice, just frustrating when I scheduled to pick my order up and it's not ready. Don't get me wrong, a few minutes is fine in regards to having to wait for my order to be complete, but 20-30 minutes from when the order was marked as ready is unacceptable.

Emily M.

Yelp
The crab rangoons dude...*MWAH*, perfection. So crab ranGUCCI. Creme de la creme of Crab Rangoon. So crab rangood.

Erica S.

Yelp
Pick up was fast and easy!! So good start. Bummer: The egg rolls were cold! Not like they cooled down from cooking, just COLD. I was there when food was ready and live around the corner. And nothing else was cold. Super bummer. Brussel sprouts were AMAZING. I also got the pork Kra Pow (no omelette). This was good and I know this to be a spicy dish and I love spicy but it was almost TOO spicy to finish and they don't indicate it's spicy so to the unknowing customer could be a surprise so they should definitely indicate which dishes are spicy or if they can alter how spicy. Ultimately I will try more of the menu and definitely do yourself a favor and get the brussel sprouts!!

Ann M.

Yelp
If you like Thai food you need to eat here. I live in North Loop and didn't even realize this ghost kitchen concept was just down the street until I read a review in Austin Eater recommending to check it out. So glad I did! The food is excellent. The steamed gyoza were the best I think I've ever had. I also had the yellow curry with chicken. Will definitely be back for more soon.

Pedro M.

Yelp
Ordered from Uber eats and it was delicious! Got the crab fried rice, pad se ew, crab Rangoon, beef Penang and mango sticky rice and it was all awesome! Crab fried rice was my personal favorite, but will be hard not to order everything again. Very authentic tasting and great portion sizes. Highly recommend for anyone craving delicious Thai food and I will definitely be ordering again.

kelsey w.

Yelp
The egg rolls were not to my liking (strange wasabi like taste), the Gyoza was covered in a very off-putting white sauce that didn't taste or look yummy, and the green curry was really hot and had some strange textures. I gave three stars since the Pad See Ew was yummy and good heated up the next day as well which is usually not the case with other Thai places. Sadly we will probably stick to one of the other many Thai places in Austin :/

Paula Q.

Yelp
I wa shocked at the price for 2 c of soup. I ordered Tom Kha Soup w/ chicken for $16.95. The soup did not have the classic Kaffir Lime flavor. The summer rolls were very warm, not cold as should be. The food was not horrible, just disappointing.

Mar V.

Yelp
Here is what I ordered and what I thought about the food. Egg Rolls - Good egg rolls, but small for the price. I thought that the wrapping was a little doughy under the crispy outside. I'm not sure if I like this. I've never had an egg roll like this. The sweet and sour sauce was delicious. Chicken fried rice - The rice lacked flavor. The rice barely had any color to it, a lot of it was literally white. It tasted like it had some fish sauce in it, so the flavor it did have wasn't something I was used to. Would not order again. Chicken Pad-See Ew - Too sweet. I've never had bad pad see ew at any restaurant and consider this a pretty safe dish. This was ok but not something I would order again. Chicken Pad Thai - This dish was good. It was the right amount of spicy and I thought had good flavor. Initially I thought it had a little too much fish sauce; I could smell it so I was a little taken back. I would however, order this dish again. Overall, I was not too happy with the food, but I would order the Pad Thai again if in the area. I would not make a special trip. I would give it another shot and maybe try something different, like a curry.

Asjia A.

Yelp
I enjoyed it. We got this for lunch today at work. The portions are pretty big, bigger than expected.

Dan J.

Yelp
The food here is is the boom I love it here recommend this place and will come back again. I live panang curry beef and omelet kar pow

Natthika F.

Yelp
Have you ever experienced Thai 's fast food s? Good food with the convenience is in town!!!

Austin B.

Yelp
Fresh and fast, Tasty thai food delivered to our door steps. couldn't be any easier concept for delivery. I will be back!

Zach E.

Yelp
Holy ****, so good im reviewing while eating. Came across randomly on Ubereats. Expensive but wanted good food and went for it. Life changing good and worth the money. Tom yum- best I've had. Pad Tai- top 3. Crab puffs - so dam good. Fresh and can't wait to go in person. Tell the Chef he is my hero. I don't typically leave the reviews.

Tara H.

Yelp
We've ordered take out so many times. It's delicious, quick and easy. One of the best Thai delivery we've found in Austin. The dumplings are a hit! We rotate our orders between curry and noodles to keep it interesting!
