Yelp
Chart House was such a huge disappointment! I made a reservation for a table of 5 for 7:30pm Saturday. The valet was very much congested (there is no regular parking; complimentary valet only). When we checked in, we learned that the restaurant was backed up, so we sat at a high top in the bar area and patiently waited. We didn't mind the wait, because it had been a few weeks since we had seen each other. 30 minutes later someone finally came to take our drinks order just as another person came to lead us to our table, so we were asked to delay ordering the drinks.
We were seated at a cozy table in the corner next to the window. This would have been a beautiful view, but it was already dark out so we couldn't see much. The view was beautiful when we arrived at the restaurant, but it was pitched black when we were seated at our table. We did see waves crash against the shore but that was about it. The restaurant itself was beautifully decorated and had an upscale vibe to it.
We were seated for a good 10 minutes before our waitress came and realized there were no water glasses at our table. 5 minutes later the empty glasses arrived at our table. We waited another 5 minutes before the glasses were filled with water. Another 5 minutes passed before we got our menus. Another 5 minutes before we got some complimentary bread and whipped butter. About 10 minutes later our waitress took our drinks and food order. We came for San Diego's Restaurant's Week, and all 5 of us ordered from this menu.
Here's what we ordered from the Restaurant Week menu at $60 each:
1st person: Roasted Shrimp, Surf N Turf, Cheesecake, and an extra hot chocolate lava cake for $12
2nd person: Salmon Belly Stack, Surf N Turf, and Chocolate Silk Tart
3rd person: Salmon Belly Stack, Mahi, and Chef's Homemade Ice Cream
4th person: Beef Carpaccio, Portuguese Stew, and Chocolate Silk Tart
5th person (me): Salmon Belly Stack, Surf N Turf, and Cheesecake
3 of us got our drinks in decent time, the 4th came 15 minutes later, and the last one came about 10 minutes after that. Our drinks were primarily ice. It was so watered down that we barely tasted any alcohol.
The roasted shrimp came out about 15 minutes after the order was placed, so my friend who ordered it got to enjoy her appetizer while the rest of us watched. We learned that she actually got an extra order that was prepared for another table by mistake (the ticket for our table was still in queue). We had run out of bread and asked for more since our food was nowhere within sight. The waitress said OK to the bread request, but forgot about it. 20 minutes later the rest of us finally got our appetizers and the bread came 5 minutes after that. The salmon belly stack was good. I liked how the pickled veggies complemented the creaminess of the salmon belly. I scrapped off every last piece from my plate because I didn't know how long it would take to get my entrée!
Our entrees arrived about 30 minutes later, which wasn't bad at all. The quality; however, was a disappointment. The steak was overcooked and cold! Also, I noticed my cut was slightly larger than my 2 friends, but it was half of theirs in thickness. One end of it was ¼" in thickness while the other end was 1/2" thick. I got a bad cut that should not have been served! Because my steak was thin, it was "well done" and even though I had asked for "medium." If they ran out of good cuts, then they should've removed Surf N Turf from the menu. I would have gladly ordered the Mahi or Portuguese Stew.
The waitress offered to take the steaks back to heat them up, but we were like, "and what, get over cooked steaks an hour later?" Mine was already cold and dry. She offered to replace my steak, but I didn't want to wait indefinitely. It had been well over 2 hours, close to 3 hours from the time we arrived.
The steak, grilled shrimp, and garlic mashed potatoes were good in flavor, but because they were cold, my friends and I did not enjoy it. Mine was the worst, because I got the reject cut! The waitress comped us for the extra dessert we ordered, which was only $12. She should have at least offer to remove the watered-down drinks from our tab!
The chocolate lava cake was good. The cheesecake was average. The chocolate silk tart tasted like chalk! It was dry and horrible! The dessert should be renamed to "chocolate chalk."
Overall, the 5 of us spent well over $500 total for a meal that was mediocre at best. The food would not have been bad if it had been delivered to our table while still hot. The service was terrible from the start and got progressively worse. We made the most out of our evening, but I would never recommend this restaurant. It's such a shame that a high-end chain restaurant failed to execute. They did a really poor job planning for San Diego Restaurant Week. Except for the quality time with my friends, this was an experience I would like to forget.
