"With live piano, regulars, New England clam chowder, and harbor views the Chart Room in Cataumet is an institution. For lunch, the must-order is the lobster salad, stuffed, and overflowing in an enormous tomato like some luxurious coastal Panera bread bowl. For dinner, it’s the baked stuffed lobster. The drink to order is the mudslide. Yes, that Mudslide: a blend of Bailey’s, vodka, kahlua, and lots of ice. Look around and everyone has one in hand—it’s a tradition."

Great location on Buzzards Bay located next to a marina. Very large outdoor space to have a Mudslide while waiting for a table. I had the sea scallops and they were very good. Sometimes there is a piano player which is very entertaining. On this day he was playing mostly show tunes. My friend got the Swordfish with Anchovy butter and it was his favorite.

Disappointed!!! Overpriced for blah food! Mussels were half empty. No sauce, spices, bread. Zero! Empty shells in plain water!!! A mystery side dish of black, greasy, hint of yellow/green called beats. Not edible. We like fresh beats too but this was bad looking/tasting. Haddock had soggy watery orange/brown paste for bread crumbs. Pre-made salad with a scoop of lobster meat. We checked in early and had a drink on the lawn across until the time of our reservation. We were seated on the edge of the porch where the sun beat down on one person and blinded the person across the whole time. We have dined all over the islands and city where umbrellas and tents are used. This was just sloppy. Honestly, don’t seat customers here. This is not a special table yet in fact it’s truly uncomfortable. We were celebrating a special occasion which we did make them aware of in advance. We asked our server if the plastic shade would help but they pointed out it would only make us hotter. We will not be back and we won’t recommend. Perhaps this is a place for a cocktail at sunset and that’s about it. The staff is friendly and the view is pretty but it stops there. If you travel a little further down the Lobster Trap has delicious food and is a much better restaurant all around for price, food and atmosphere.

Google
The outside seating is lovely, where you get to watch the sunset. Considering how crowded it was, the service was really excellent. The food was good, tasty, and well prepared, but I was disappointed with the menu selection. It was a bit pedestrian, very "average", and I expected more creativity in the menu. It was classic New England seafood... Scallops drowned in butter with breadcrumbs, stuffed shrimp, assorted fish that was baked or broiled, crab cakes, lobster. Nothing you couldn't get anywhere else... Except for the gorgeous sunset, of course :-)

Google
The Chartroom offers perfect waterfront views of the harbor and amazing sunsets. Come in for dinner or stop in for amazing mudslides the take window. If you're pulling up to their dock there's a $15 charge (27' boat) and it can be busy because the place is incredibly popular.

Google
Perfect spot for fresh seafood and large parties. On the water and runs like a well oiled machine. We were a party of 8 - I had an espresso martini, raw oysters, the clam chowder and mussels. We all had a fantastic time!

Jeff White

Google
Great outside seating. Showed up at about 1pm on a nice day. Parking lot was just about full and a 20min wait for a table. Got seated after about 10min wait. Bloody Mary was strong/good. Noshed on apps. Perfect afternoon destination. Wait staff was great.

Google
Loud and crowded on a sunny weekend, what you'd expect right however the service was great, food was only so so. You pay for the atmosphere so if you want to get out on land or from sea this place is descent but on the pricey side.

Google
$55.00 for a lobster salad sandwich !! My fault . . . I should have asked what the “MKT PRICE” was as listed on the menu. $14.00 Mud Slide drinks that were MEH! The owner(s) should be ashamed of themselves for charging so much for the sandwich and should instruct servers to tell customers what the market price is when it is ridiculously out of line with other nearby restaurants and taking advantage of customers! Used to go there a couple of times a year . . . Never again!

Chris B.

Yelp
Went to the Chart Room with @websterbuffa88 and my In-Laws for a late Wedding Anniversary Dinner, we got a Salad with Blue Cheese Dressing, I got the Swordfish Tacos with Homemade Potato Salad and Anchovie Butter, Elizabeth got Baked-Stuffed Lobster and Homemade Potato Salad, everything was delicious and so good, we love this Restaurant, our Waitress was really nice and Hard Working, definitely going back again

Annie D.

Yelp
The location is the highlight. Beautiful setting with harbor views. Great friendly waiter! That's where my good review ends. The food was entirely bland, including the scrod and scallops. As if they were afraid to season the food. Ever have plain white fish with nothing on it? That's what to expect here. Go for a drink and sunset but someplace else to eat!

Lena M.

Yelp
Disappointed! Over priced for bla food. The mussels were half empty with zero spices, no garlic, no sauce, and no bread. A pile of empty shells in plain water. Salad was premade chilled with a lump of lobster meat. The haddock was just ok. Bread crumb paste on-top. A side of beats that were greasy and black with a tint of yellow. Awful tasting and not edible. We like fresh beats too but this was not good. We were seated on the edge of the porch where the sun beat down on us and blinded the person across. Honestly, don't sit customers here. It's not by any means special seating anyone would enjoy other than at night time. We asked if we could be moved since it was a special occasion we were celebrating and we had made a reservation but no options offered as the place was packed. We arrived and checked in an hour early. Decided to enjoy a cocktail across on the lawn and see the view. We returned back to the hostess at our reservation time which is why we were surprised we were given a terrible seat in the scorching and blinding sun on the edge of the porch. Believe me, it's no honeymoon seat by any means. We have been all over the islands, city and dined outside at lots of restaurants where tents and umbrellas are used and this was just sloppy. The staff is friendly and the view is pretty. A place for a cocktail and an appetizer at sunset is best suited for this place but there are better places to enjoy a view. We won't be back and won't recommend! If you travel a little further down the road, the Lobster Trap is an excellent restaurant with delicious food and a far better place to have dinner.

Tiffany L.

Yelp
So, so good. This is the place to go in the summer to sit outside with a nice glass of wine to go with your lobster. Their chowder is phenomenal.

Catherine M.

Yelp
This place was so great with amazing service. We had a larger party, which they were able to accommodate. Our server, Martina, was awesome. She gave us recommendations of where to go around the area and wrote down the addresses for us. The food was also really good. I had the schrod with a baked potato and it was delicious. There was no fried food on the menu, which I found really interesting. Definitely a place to check out if you're in Cape Cod.

Jay S.

Yelp
$80 lobster? I don't think so....Excellent location on the harbor, but over priced and super crowded. Hard Pass. Try the Lobster Trap down the street....Affordable and way more authentic.

Leslie-Ann M.

Yelp
Wow. What a horrible experience today at the Chart Room. The luck ended when they had a table free without a wait. Went downhill from there. Drinks took 30 min. Then to order food another 15 min. Disaster in the kitchen we were rocks after an hour wait for food. Food started to trickle out. Took another hour to get to all. Burger almost raw. Chowder they had to remake due to kitchen disaster came our last. No visit from a manager to apologize, explain situation, offer a discount. When we asks our young server to ask management for some recompense, he came back quickly with "she won't do anything". Went to talk to "she" got a few confused looks like there wasn't a problem. Told them we are locals and regulars and very disappointed. No apology..she actually said to me "whatever"...yeah, don't go here this summer. It's a shit show for a ton of money.

Paula B.

Yelp
Had my 75 th birthday there in August for 10 guests. Lovely table outside on the porch with fabulous service. Had my favorite baked stuffed lobster and shrimp cocktail.

Allison H.

Yelp
I came by with a large group of friends for dinner. While you're waiting for your table, you're able to order beer and wait outside at a table by the water, which was a nice surprise. For dinner, I ordered the turkey BLT on portuguese bread and my partner ordered the fish tacos. Both dishes tasted good - the sandwich was a bit dry and the tacos were flavorful, overall no complaints. There is also live music on Friday nights which created an enjoyable ambience. It got really cold at night, since the restaurant is right along the water, so I highly recommend bringing a sweater for some extra warmth. Our server, Martina, was superb, and is the reason this review is getting 5 stars. She was extremely kind, warm, friendly, and personable!

Susanq C.

Yelp
Always a treat to sit outside on the water with friends. I had baked stuffed lobster which was excellent. Others had scallops and swordfish-- all of which were very well prepared. Service was excellent as were the cocktails. They make great mudslides!

Bart F.

Yelp
The best lobster salad sandwich on the Cape - Service is prompt and friendly - views of Red Brook Harbor and boats moored at Kingman Marine.

Daniel B.

Yelp
VERY popular restaurant with a terrific view and a favorite of ours for lobster salad. However, the other food is often "uneven". Started with Clams Casino. Tasty. Then the lobster salad portion of our visit. I had it in a tomato and while the lobster salad was delicious as usual, the tomato was hard, flavorless and unseasoned. I wish that if they were going to use an out of season tomato, at least season it a little before the salad goes in. The potato salad that accompanied it was very good. I ordered a classic cocktail, a Tom Collins which I have had some trouble lately finding a bar that a) knows what they are, and b) knows how to make them. This place has it on their cocktail menu so I ordered one and it truly stunk. So, points for the seafood and not much else.

Blake A.

Yelp
Would recommend this restaurant for large groups as they were willing to take a reservation for our party of 10 on short notice. The outdoor seating overlooks the marina and the overall ambiance has small town charm. The seafood was fresh with some favorites being the lobster Mac & cheese (had the most lobster I've ever received in a lobster Mac), lobster sandwich, and the clams casino.

Anna S.

Yelp
Lovely dinner on our first night on the Caoe. The setting is lovely with beautiful views of the harbor and we were just in time to enjoy the lovely sunset. Lots of seating both inside and outside. Food was good. My salmon was excellent! My husband loves his swordfish my daughter loved her scallops. Our waitress was attentive. They were super busy that night but she always found time to come check on us periodically. Highly recommend both for food and the view. We will certainly be back!

Laura B.

Yelp
Greatest ambiance around. Love the harbor and views. The ducks come to visit and they are friendly. This restaurant has a lot of outdoor seating. Come for the views. They really could modernize their menu and have vegan and gluten free options. While the drinks are amazing the food is just average. Will still return every year.

Carole C.

Yelp
pulled our boat up to get sandwiches to go this past Sunday 9/10/2023. the woman at the cashiers counter was rude telling us we are earlier than she told us (5 minutes). Then didn't even have anything pleasant to say to us as she was giving us the food only to be more concerned with looking at the receipt to see if there was a tip. Which there wasn't because of her bad attitude. We have all worked in the restaurant and retail business. While waiting for the food went into gift shop where the sales girls were mocking to woman with drinks in hand. Can't you read the sign they said to them, then rolling their eyes at the customers as they walked out. All that for a very basic sandwich with chips that had no flair or love in them at $17-20.

Robert M.

Yelp
Good seafood and views. A bit pricey but it's Osterville. Will be back with more money. LOL!

Mari T.

Yelp
Came here with a group of 5, got here an hour before our reservations to have a drink and enjoy the views. Pros: The vibes are IMMACULATE. Incredible views. plenty of room to stand around with your group and have some (actually reasonably priced!) drinks. Lobster and crab dip was good. Piano man was awesome. Love the old school cape vibes. Cons... Food: bad. (more on this below) Service: kitchen was backed up but our server was darling. I wanted to give her a hug because she was so stressed out and was just trying her best. More on the food- My friends quahogs were frozen inside (mine was good). My fish tacos were so dry they were almost inedible. Friends swordfish was also dry. All our food came out 10 minutes apart from each other. My friends steak was "bare minimum" aka the kind of steak you'd expect to eat at applebees, not for $32 at the chart room. Overall we'd go back for drinks but definitely not for dinner. Too many better options on the cape to suffer through this revolving door of issues.

Brian B.

Yelp
Atmosphere, food and service is tops. The harbor views spectacular! Inside or outside you won't be disappointed.

Kathy K.

Yelp
We've been to the Chart room in Osterville numerous times, our favorite, wanted to check out the original in Cataumet. It is so much bigger than it's counterpart. We asked to sit outside and were brought to a table under the awning right behind the bar. We again asked for outside and the request was dismissed, not sure what you have to do to get an outside seat as there were open seats. Service was super friendly and attentive. Food was tasty. I had a very generous portion of Prime rib, my husband the scallops. Would go back.

Coach Tim C.

Yelp
Caroline was great excellent manager very helpful and thoughtful. Made it worth the Trip.

Debra T.

Yelp
Wow. So, we called to make sure they were open when we got off work so we could try the burger that is supposed to be so good. Will never know!!!! Why you ask??? Because they told us they were open until 9pm and when we got there at 8:15.... well, they turned us away and said they shut down the kitchen at 8:00 but hey, you can have a drink for dinner... Nope. Lost our business and we will be letting allllll of our friends know how it was handled. Bad.

Dayne T.

Yelp
Chart Room: a quick review guide for anyone considering... Is the food good? No. Our table ordered: cheeseburger, Reuben, turkey BLT, and grilled chicken salad.. everyone said their food was below average. Are the drinks good? No. - no draft beer - we ordered a round of mudslides.. they sucked. To be fair, here's what is good: - parking was easy - sitting outside was great Final thoughts; The owners of this restaurant are either lazy or outsource all the management of the place and live in Miami. This place could be a gold mine if the food and drinks were good. No French fries, no draft beer.. this place is fun to take a pic for the gram. That's about it!

Holly H.

Yelp
Come for the sunset and atmosphere. Stay for the mudslides and yummy swordfish with anchovies or tacos and the crab salad. Fun place open through Indigenous People's Day. Clam Chowder is also good. It is very busy at times. Sit back and enjoy the views.

J B.

Yelp
Most beautiful location. Our server was wonderful. Drinks (rum swizzle, salt air and vinho verde) were all nicely done at the window while we waited for our reservation. We ordered lobster roll, scrod and scallops. All well executed. We weren't rushed as we finished our wine. Don't read the bad reviews. Is a nice location with wait staff that cares and good food!

R K.

Yelp
Tomato stuffed with lobster salad is my go-to for about 20 years here and better than ever. Huge portion. Best mudslide. Not too thick, but plenty strong. Beware

Kimberly T.

Yelp
Very pretty views even when chilly & cloudy! , excellent mudslides . food good ( chicken appetizer and turkey BLT were very good , steak tips not good very chewy & marinate wasn't good) little over priced like everything else in the world today! Recommend making reservations but we did get lucky with First come first serve bar seating. Variety of people. Staff was very friendly. Free valet a plus! But don't forget to tip! Cute shops but pricey. Very smart marketing , selling a variety of apparel. Fun atmosphere can't wait to return for the beautiful sunsets

Laura L.

Yelp
A fun place to have lunch outside by the waterfront. The menu is simple and not overwhelming. I love trying fun drinks and my choice was not a disappointment. My favorite is the chowda. The bowl was packed with quahogs and very filling. A shout out to all the waitstaff as each one had smiles and acted very professional.

Deb P.

Yelp
Meh..... great vibe , beautiful spot. I would suggest a drink and the view forget the food. Average at best and Overpriced. We made a poor choice to sit at the bar next to the service window ~ blenders whirling and they used our space at the bar to fill glasses~ kinda felt like we were in their way , so why put barstools there? Non attentive bar staff ~ not impressed

Les G.

Yelp
Love this place & always will! The owners are wonderful people and work amongst everyone! Always make reservations for dinner (days before)! The food is wonderful! The clam chowdah is delicious. Anything seafood is my go to since it's on the water and you're on the Cape. Yes, they have chicken and other meat options, but you're on the coast, enjoy what the sea brings in vs. the farm land. Not to say that food isn't great as well, but again.. come on.. it's on the water! It's always hopping in the evening, someone is usually on the piano inside! Great atmosphere, great service, great drinks! Thank you always Chartroom!

Jill M.

Yelp
Amazing mudslides! So convenient for the boat! We look forward to summers at the Chart Room!

Barbara P.

Yelp
We flew in for my mother's 85th birthday and she wanted to go here for her special meal. Instead, it wasn't just a letdown; it was a shame. My son ordered skirt steak with mashed potatoes and we couldn't believe our eyes when we saw 5 small pieces of burnt steak on top of a sea of mashed potatoes--for $30. Not only was the serving almost decorative, it was burnt and tough. My mothers special dish was a $60 lobster dish which came out with burnt stuffing on top. Knowing my mother, it would've been very upsetting to "make a fuss" and it also would've further extended the already substantial time we had waited. Afterwards I went to speak to the manager and instead of being sympathetic, she told me several times I had to have told her right away. I explained several times again about how disruptive that would've been during such a special occasion. I also asked whether telling her would've changed the pitiful amount of steak they served (nope). Having just come from NYC, I was fairly calibrated and this was a rip-off. Although I'm referencing the costs, what it really boils down to is feeling taken advantage of. While they did take it off the bill, a one-time special occasion was ruined for me not only because of the meal itself but for having to defend why it was upsetting. In writing this, I'll probably hear more reasons from them here blaming us about what we did wrong by not stopping the meal. I'm reviewing it because you should be aware that you are paying for the location and/or the nostalgia if you grew up going here--not the food or service.

Lisa Rob S.

Yelp
Beautiful restaurant with high prices for sub par food. Disappointing as several locals recommended but it's just a tourist trap. Chowder was meh, soup was inedible, homemade cheese was homemade only in that they took it out of the jar and put it in a bowl along with the stale crackers. Stuffies were good - bit spicy - but good. Otherwise, nothing to recommend, including the service.

Thomas N.

Yelp
have been coming here for years when in the area nice setting on the harbor and a recently added covered area is lovely food has always been very good as was todays swordfish tips and burger drinks very good service pleasant and efficient seems to me it has always been this way we really like this place

Sue W.

Yelp
The setting is unbeatable. An old ship like building in a boatyard. Lots of very well done expansion of outdoor seating. Very open and well spaced inside too. The seafood is always the best servings are generous. However the menu is very conventional. No garlic or spices or herbs. There are buttery casseroles, pot pie, broiled with bread crumbs. Still love it.

Bee K.

Yelp
Come here for the mudslides and the view, stay here for the mudslides and the view. (Both of which were great!) We came around 3-4pm on Saturday and they weren't serving entrees, which was disappointing. For beachgoers/day-trippers, this is our "big" Cape meal for the day before heading home. Unfortunately my party didn't care for any of the apps or sandwiches, so we found somewhere else to get our seafood entree fix.

John H.

Yelp
Great place to dine. Favorite in the cape Sit near the piano bar or outside on the terrace. All wonderful.

Wendy B.

Yelp
Love the vibe of the Chart Room and it's perfect on a hot summer night. It is one of my new favorite go to restaurants. The food is good but I like it mostly for the atmosphere. It's great for group gatherings.

Renee A.

Yelp
Excellent location for nine people. Mudslides were amazing! Shrimp Rangoon salmon dinner special was AMAZING !(easily could feed two!) Baked shrimp was spot on plus sides !

Julie S.

Yelp
I have been craving a Chart Room mudslide for a while now, finally got back this way to treat myself to one! The atmosphere is always great at this place, COVID or not. The servers were wearing masks and the tables were consistently being wiped clean, a reservation is currently needed for indoor and outdoor dining, but there are cocktail tables by the water that serve alcohol only that are first come first serve. If you're in the area it's absolutely worth it to swing by for mudslides or your favorite drink (definitely recommend the mudslides though)!

Dave T.

Yelp
One of the go to destinations for boaters in Buzzards Bay in the summer. Famous for their Mudslides, they have a good selection of local beers as well as a full bar. Lobster rolls, clam chowder and many other seafood options in this historic spot. Come by boat and stop by the fuel dock at Kingman's to tie up on the dock or a get a mooring for your visit. Outdoor seating with a great view of Bassetts Island

Sara S.

Yelp
We came for lunch with 2 kids on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon in July. We walked right in and were seated immediately under the seashell floored tent, looking out on the marina. The view was lovely and it was great to have a place for the baby to roam around (with one of us, of course) while we waited for our food. We each had a fruity rum drink and we split a lobster sandwich (huge, on fresh Portuguese bread - so yummy) and a Caesar salad (which was meh). The kids had a hot dog and a cheeseburger, which we tasted - both were very good. Service was fast and friendly. Only suggestion: dedicated restaurant parking would be a big plus. (But I'm guessing it's not a huge priority, as they probably get a lot of business from the marina. )

Harry W.

Yelp
I had a cheeseburger and chowder. Both where very good. But there isn't much to pick from. They need to change up the menu

Rob D.

Yelp
So I've always liked this place - going back many years - never 5 star food certainly but a great location and a fun atmosphere. Visited recently and had probably the worst meal I've ever had put in front of me in a restaurant - the stuffed shrimp was not fresh - it smelled - with soggy ritz cracker crumbs floating in butter - a mess from start to finish. Whoever prepared this meal either doesn't know what they're doing or doesn't care - location and drinks only go so far guys - make the effort! Only one more of those and I'll be done with the Chart Room.

Valerio E.

Yelp
Given that except for the stuffed lobster the rest of menu is quite mediocre, we have been coming here for generations but we are definitely not coming back. We spent 200$ (two people) in an hour and after 90min we were asking to leave because "we have other people". And nobody told this when we made the reservation! I traveled the world and I'm having a hard time thinking about something more tacky than that. Good luck.

Carl M.

Yelp
Meh. All around meh. The food is meh. The service is meh. The only redeeming quality is the location. It's a shame because it seems they know this. No need to improve the service or food when the location will always draw guests. I don't leave reviews often... but I just want the restaurant to see this and maybe improve the food!?? Just a shame this great location is wasted on meh food.

Ken L.

Yelp
This is the first time I've been here in about 5 years. I would have given it 3*s back then, but now I'm giving it 4. If you look at their ratings history, you can see that they have been getting better over time. This place is way off the beaten path by land, but is the only restaurant in the harbor, so most of the patrons are boaters. Boating kind of dries up after Labor Day, so I thought there was no need to make a reservation. Boy was I wrong. We got there at about 6:30 on a Saturday night. They said there would be an hour and a half wait. I put my name in and we sat outside drinking mud slides (which they are famous for). I highly recommend them if you are inclined to that kind of drink. The actual wait was just under an hour. We were seated in the main dining room close to the piano. Things were quite loud, but the entertainment was good. If you prefer something quieter, as for the patio. I wanted Prime Rib, but they were out, so I had a sirloin steak which was perfectly cooked. I enjoyed the side dishes as well. My wife had swordfish with anchovy sauce on the side. The fish was good, but the sauce was overpowering. If you haven't tried this place in a while, it may be worth another chance. Warning, hours are different off season, and they close down for the winter on Columbus Day, so off season hours may not be correct on Yelp.

Joan L.

Yelp
Pricey but worth the atmosphere and mud slides! I miss the seating outside though but understand the need for tables etc. bring back a few Adirondack chairs!!

Katherine G.

Yelp
Delicious crab cake and lobstah roll. Mudslide was perfect. Great view, friendly staff and plenty of outdoor seating to choose from!

Katie C.

Yelp
Great location and great mudslide ... it is clear they know they are the only spot around because the service couldn't be more rude. They used to allow dogs at the outside tables across the parking lot for those of us stoping by for just a drink with a pup. Not only can you not sit there with an animal now (right next to the dog bags from previous seasons), now they run out and shout at you if you happen to be walking by to let you know your dog isn't welcome near their restaurant making even walking by unwelcoming. Two occurrences of being "spoken to" about my dog without even ordering from them. If I wasn't staying in this harbor I wouldn't go near this place ever again.
