The 38 Best Restaurants in Sydney, Australia - Eater

"In 1989, the late Amy Chanta opened her first Chat Thai restaurant. Many outposts followed, and her popular take on larb, noodles, and stir-fries made other Thai restaurateurs — like Yok Yor’s Mek Phungsamphan — realize there was a large audience for their cuisine. She helped launch Thai Town in 2013 and, with daughter Palisa Anderson, cooked the final staff meal for Noma Australia’s pop-up in 2016. On her farm, Anderson grows holy basil and multiple kinds of garlic, which add a fragrant punch to her dishes. Chat Thai’s success opened pathways for exciting Thai eateries across Sydney, from recent arrivals such as Porkfat to older favorites like Caysorn." - Lee Tran Lam

Google
Excellent Thai place that offers something for everyone! We couldn't pick what we wanted. They have such an extensive menu and everything sounded amazing. Their menu was quite easy to read and loved the use of pictures for some of their popular items. The food itself was delicious and the sauces that came with the satay skewers and the crab spring rolls were absolutely delicious. The pad Thai was great and so was the duck. They also offer quite a variety of drinks to cater for all. The service was great and the ambience was quite nice. Highly recommend if you are after an authentic Thai place.

Hidden upstairs in a building opposite the Circular Quay wlferry wharf, lies this great Thai restaurant. There is an escalator to take you up. There is a sitting waiting area in the foyer if the restaurant is busy. One inside you will find that it is a cosy, modern atmosphere with a relaxed and vibrant vibe. You're promptly seated and given the menu. The menu is very cool as it as a dedicated sections for vegetarian and vegan dishes. Rather than the usual mode of reading every dish and determining if it has a vegetarian or vegan options or not, you can flip straight to the vegetarian section or the vegan section and peruse every dish available to you. This is very cool if you are vegetarian or vegan. You are asked if you would like still or sparking water. Please bear in mind that sparkling is $8 a bottle. This is mentioned by the staff. It would be kind for them to mention that, instead of patrons being surprised at the bill. There are a lot of enticing dishes which encourages return visits to sample the other dishes youay not select on your current visit. There are a good selection of noodle dishes, curries, seafood, hot and cold salads and more. The soft shell crab and apple salad is wonderlly refreshing that complements the light delicate flavours of the soft shell crab, and the gentle crunchy texture. The entres and also wonderful. It's all good and service is warm and friendly. Do note there is a 50 cent charge for each take away container if you require them for leftvovers. There is also a surcharge applicable for card payments. If you arrive early, service is fast and you can have a wonderful meal before going to the Opera house for a performance. Worth a visit or multiple visits.

Great authentic food, everything we ordered was cooked to perfection. Crab omelette can be seasoned slightly better and if green chili lime sauce is available, it will be perfect.

We always come back to this place when in Sydney. Online booking was easy, but make sure be on time. We were seated right away. Food came quickly. Service was great, but it can get very busy during dinner time. The crab omellette is a must try! The red curry fish fillet was also fantastic. Plenty of drinks & desserts to choose from. We will be back again in the future.

Google
Chat Thai is always my go to for eating out at a Thai restaurant. This time didn’t disappoint, all the food was well presented and delicious. The only downside was that we were sat at a very small table for 9 people inside when there were clearly bigger tables available just outside the restaurant

Google
Chat Thai is an institution when it comes to quality Thai food in the CBD. It is always popular and busy for a good reason. Their food is tasty and authentic. They also have a separate vegetarian, vegan and gluten free menu to cater for everyone. We started off with the som dtum (green papaya salad) which was fresh, zesty and spicy. Ask for extra peanuts if you want more crunch. We also had tempura fried silken eggplant and tapioca dumplings. For mains we had green curry and paak boohng which is stir fried water spinach with steamed rice. For drinks we had fresh drinking coconut and for dessert we finished with sacu coconut ice cream with butterfly pea sago. Would highly recommended Chat Thai.

Google
Average :( The best I liked was papaya Salad.. my chicken fried rice had loads of onion, taste was 6.5/10. Green curry was 7/10. Mango sticky rice was 6.5/10... The coconut sauce they gave was a bit salty, mango was not ripe, only sticky rice were good. But we had better than this food. Portion size was good.

Google
We ordered the crying tiger(beef) and pad thai. The beef tasted very flavourful with the chilli sauce and the pad thai was quite enjoyable just like every time I come here! It did take a while for the food to get here because it was very busy but the staff were very nice. Definitely a place to go if you enjoy good Thai food!

Yelp
I love everything I ordered! The crispy eggplant was perfectly crisp on the outside and tender on the inside with a nice light sauce that balanced the flavors. The duck curry was sweet and smooth. The prawn from the seafood section of the menu was more spicy as it had some red curry drizzled with coconut milk. All of the dishes were prepared fresh to order and came out in a timely manner. Our server took a while to initially come but was efficient for the remainder of our time. The ambiance is casual.

Yelp
Average quality food that really disappointed us during our dinner visit Setvice was professional and prompt but the taste of the food was at most average My tiger tear steak was hard and the meat of questionable quality My wife's pad thai lacked taste period Maybe we ordered the wrong items but based on the glowing reviews our experience was not good I would not go back to Chat Thai based on the food quality

Yelp
Very Authentic thai food chain in Sydney. Appear to be all Thai staffing. We ordered duck curry, Thai Fried Rice, Basil Fried Rice and Pat Thai. All dishes were delicious but our favorite was the Pat Thai. Good Atmosphere with open kitchen. Thank you

Yelp
Wow this food was amazing ! Also fast service ! See pictures - I had the red curry chickens tons of flavor and not too thin sauce. Also the pineapple fried rice with chicken was one of the best I've had. So much flavor Also the Ki Mao with Beef Definitely a must try thai food in Sydney I don't know what these other people are doing with these reviews they clearly don't know good thai food. I travel to eat and always am very critical or bad thai places.

Yelp
Arrived in Sydney from the states (CA) and while waiting for our room at the Marriott one of the staff recommended this restaurant. Walking in around 11:45 AM and there were only a few tables occupied. By 12:00 noon it was packed. Our dishes arrived quickly and were some of the best Thai food we ever had. My wife had Pad Thai and I had a dish (don't remember the name) that was similar to a soup that had dumplings and noodles. The flavor and quality were amazing. As we were leaving there was a line of at least 20+ people waiting to get in. Based on the service, ambiance and food I could see why so many people wanted to eat here. Prices were very fair and I'd highly recommend. We are heading back to Sydney for a couple of days before we leave Australia and definitely will be eating here again before we leave.

Yelp
Have not had Thai for a while, an impromptu stop for a solo lunch and I was not disappointed. Reasonable pricing, chicken satay skewers were divine as was red duck curry soup and rice. Good ambience and a great vibe overall.

Yelp
Came on a Sunday afternoon after a long flight. Was staying close by and decided to come here since it was the only restaurant open. The ambiance is nice for a daytime thing. Got the red curry and my husband got the drunken noodles. Unfortunately the service was abysmal, the waiters would never come to us even though it wasn't busy. I had to flag them down a couple of times. As far as the food goes, it was good but thought it would be spicier. I wasn't expecting the extra charge as I'm not from Australia, so i thought it was rather expensive for two people. All In all, if there aren't other options then I would come here

Yelp
Oh man.. located in a building full of restaurants in Circular Quay, I really really wanted to enjoy this place. The restaurant has greenery and wooden tables and is very visually pleasing. The food looks amazing and is presented very well.. but that's where the positive points end. The service was ok - we were sitting on the bench waiting for the restaurant to open and the sign still said closed past 11am. No one came to get us, knowing we were sitting outside waiting on the bench. We finally gave in around 11:15am and asked if they were opened and the lady told us they've been opened.. uhhh.. the sign still says close right at the entrance and all the employees are sitting at the tables eating lunch! Pretty unprofessional. We ordered food fairly quickly but the selection is HUGE! Literally pages and pages of things to choose from and all the photos looked delicious! We wanted everything! * LODT SHONG SINGAPORE - coconut milk with silky pandan dumplings.. a drink. The pandan dumplings were delicious but there weren't very many in the drink. I'd like to have seen more, like the photo as advertised. The coconut milk was overpowering and tasted like fake coconut flavoring. 2/5 * PADT SI-EW with Tofu - the noodles were overcooked and mushy. The tofu was soft and not the crispy kind. The flavors were just mediocre. 2/5 * SOM DTUM KAI KEHM - papaya salad with salty egg. I wanted to try this cause it was different. The salty egg didn't add much to the salad. Papaya salad was fresh and as expected. Lots of dried shrimp! 4/5 * GUAY TIEW DTOM YUM GOONG - thin rice noodles with king prawns, calamari, soft boiled hens eggs, chicken broth and herbals - a Noodle soup. Tasted a bit too sweet but good. Seafood overcooked. 3/5 * GAENG KEAW GAI - green curry with chicken. Loved the flavors of this dish the most but boy was it spicy! Wish there was a bit more substance cause it was a lot of broth! 4/5 Overall, it was ok Thai food. I've had way better. Was edible, just not memorable and I wouldn't come back again if I had other options!

Yelp
Chat Thai is probably one of the better options on the lower end of the budget within the area. They provide quality meals quickly and the offer consistent quality. The staff are great and wait times normally aren't bad. Best for lunch in my opinion. You always know what you'll get here.

Yelp
I always the order same thing when I come here, the Crying Tiger with a side of rice. It's reliable, delicious, and doesn't disappoint. Portion sizes are big, service is quick, and I've always enjoyed my meal. However, when coming here you have to take into account that it is a chain restaurant, and you'll get better/more authentic thai food elsewhere. But it's always a treat for me when I'm in town, and I have never regretted going here.

Yelp
I really love the Thai food here, I wish they had this chain in New York. I wanted to order everything, but since it's just P and I, I had to narrow it down a bit of the dishes and since P is allergic to seafood, we're a bit limited on what we could share. Got my Traditional Red Thai Iced Tea and the following items were shared: Som Dtum Thai - good version of green papaya salad, but P wasn't into it because of the dried shrimp. Crab Fried Spring Rolls - had to eat this buy myself, but I didn't mind. Goong OPB Woon Sen - had these ridiculous Spencer Gulf King prawns and they were so good. Love the fact they left the heads on these shrimp, because I treat them like I do crawfish. Khao Grapao Bped - duck over rice dish and I remember liking P's dish too.

Yelp
Stop here was mainly just due to walking around and not by design. They have quite an extensive menu and since I love soft shelled crab the dish that they had on the menu caught my attention . Not normally a curry fan but this was amazing. It had a very generous amount of crab and the onions and peppers were well cooked and still had texture (not cooked to mush) - This was a very pleasant surprise for a place that wasn't chosen "by design"

Yelp
Service is very slow and bad. We have been waiting for the menu for the past 10 mins and nobody has even checked on us. Will give them another 2 mins.. and I will be gone from here and never return. Most of the restaurants around this place close early and these guys are open till late. Hence they know the customers come here to eat no matter how they service the clients. However the food is good.

Yelp
Chat Thai is a chain that we found pop up in all the popular places. This location wasn't in a food court, but we did see other locations in food courts. It's definitely NOT food court food. Some people comment that the food is a bit pricey, but we thought it made sense for what you were getting. Everything was delicious! We weren't here during a busy time so service wasn't rushed or too slow. We were able to enjoy our meal with 2 kids and not worry about noise and also find dishes that were acceptable to more picky palates. We especially liked the duck curry and the pad thai. The Thai iced tea was also very good. With all the other excellent restaurant choices in Sydney, we didn't get a chance to visit again, but definitely would recommend to anyone visiting Sydney and save it on our list for the next trip.

Yelp
Everything was salty and dry and the bbq pork definitely was refried a few time. It was near closing time and waitress came out to ask us:"you want anything else? Kitchen close soon" no thanks And expensive AF

Yelp
This is a little more of a 1.5 review but I could see how this place could be quite a good experience if done right. We ordered the Chicken Salad (25), Padt Tai and the Yellow Curry Crab. Problems started with being seated in a largely empty restaurant (that to be fair got a little busier but still) in right next to a couple and the next couple was seated next to us, on tables so close you had to walk down the whole row of tables to get to the other side. So basically it was like sitting in the middle two seats on a 6 person rectangle with 4 people you don't know on either side having their own conversations. Not great. I mentioned the number of the chicken salad we ordered because problem #2 was that we asked to get the salad first, thinking it was a salad... the server was a little taken aback but didn't explain and as we are tourists who just the prior evening had observed that in Australia apparently when you order a salad they bring it out generally with or even after the main course and we are used to having salad come first. Also, when we ordered the yellow curry we asked if it came with rice and again the server was taken aback and said it came with noodles. Of course! Ok, more Aussie differences.... fun! As it played out, we got the salad first and it was hot, more like ground chicken with hot red peppers and a few sprigs of Arugula thrown in. It was so spicy I started getting hiccups and my poor companion was throwing back glasses of water. I was desperate then for our Padt Tai and "noodles" with the curry to come!!! Well come they did and the noodles were cold, thin, tasteless, and absorbed less moisture than the spoon. The yellow curry was also absolutely red hot, and only the Padt Tai remained as something to cut the spice. We ended up drinking the entire liter of water on our table, but honestly the flavors were good and the presentation was nice, if it wasn't so insanely hot. As I write this review quite a few hours later though I remain unsatisfied with the lack of an absorbent starch, and both me any my S.O. had a real stomach ache and I still can't get to sleep... this was without a doubt the spiciest Thai food I've ever had and all without any rice to take the edge off! One other point: at the end of the meal, while we were reflecting on our meal, our plates were removed and then... nothing! After 5 minutes or more while we looked around and wondered when we would get our check - I needed up flagging our server who was at that time chatting away with a coworker. When the server arrives I ask for the check and she chuckles, points to a number on our desk and a little condescendingly explains that we tell that number to the cashier and they will take care of the bill. I guess that should have been obvious? I wonder how long she would have left us sitting there if I hadn't called her over?

Yelp
I love this place everything I have ordered has been great! I've ordered the green Thai with chicken,(Gaeng keaw Gai) the yellow curry, Padt si -ew I love the wide rice noodle ! The location at circular Quay is a very busy place !! you can order online for Takeaway too
google avatar

David A R.

Yelp
Not many options down in this part of the city on a Sunday evening. But if you're looking for some good a Thai food before catching the Buda Gili light show on the opera house, this is a great place to grab a pad Thai for $15 au. Some fried rice with prawns and all the basics done well and quickly for a decent price for the Area.

Yelp
Beautiful Thai food right next to Circular Quay.Very friendly staff, quick service and tasty meals. Highly recommended.

Aeolus W.

Yelp
The whole dinning experience was not as good as I would expected. The service was very slow. We kept our hands up for a couple times and finally got a server came to take our order. However, the foods came out really fast. But no one ever came and checked to see if we need anything. Taste wise, I personally think they are too salty & need more herb flavor. One dish I highly recommend, KHANOM BUENG YOUAN. Light, fresh, perfect seasoning. A must try!
google avatar

Siri K.

Yelp
Fantastic food!!! Fresh ingredients & tasty. They have some innovative dishes I haven't seen in other Thai restaurants. Highly recommend
google avatar

Yelp
Worst Thai restaurant is CBD. Serving is so small. Pineapple fried rice does not have pineapple? Staff were so rude. Never again. Dirty plate. I wonder why this restaurant exist?
google avatar

Clei S.

Yelp
Really disappointing, serving is small. Menu does not indicate spice levels so when you order a curry you get surprised at how spicy it is. Pineapple fried rice barely had any pineapple! To top it off, service was bad!
google avatar

Tracy E.

Yelp
Delicious food, spicy unless ordered otherwise. Love the green curry and lychee juice.

Linda Z.

Yelp
The crab rice is with no crab inside. It's all with egg and rice. I don't think it's good for the tourist.
google avatar

Juliana G.

Yelp
Took the waiter over 30 minutes to even get to our table to get our drink order. They brought my friend some absolutely disgusting dish, and when he asked for a new one they took another 30 minutes to get it out to him, and then charged him for the other dish! I enjoyed my pad si ew which is why I'm not giving it 1 star, but definitely not good service at all.
google avatar

Stephanie R.

Yelp
Horrible service! The waiters did not pay attention one bit and we had to call the waiter over to take our order, bring us the bill and again to pick up the bill. The food was brought out one dish at a time with several minutes inbeteen each dish rather than all at once like any other restaurant. And to top it off, they charged for a container to take our leftovers. At least the food was good.

Andy P.

Yelp
Close to my hotel. Reasonsnly priced. Good selection on the menu. Quick service. Good food. It's a chain, not a fancy place, but I recommend it for a good meal.
