The 38 Best Restaurants in Sydney, Australia | Eater

"In 1989, the late Amy Chanta opened her first Chat Thai restaurant. Many outposts followed, spreading her popular takes on larb, noodles, and stir-fries, and she helped launch Thai Town in 2013. (Along with daughter Palisa Anderson, she also cooked the final staff meal for Noma Australia’s pop-up in 2016.) On her farm, Palisa grows holy basil and multiple kinds of garlic, which add a fragrant punch to the 200-item menu at Circular Quay, including six types of papaya salad and a rainbow of curries. Grab a bite before jumping on a harborside ferry or catching a show at the Sydney Opera House. Know before you go: Chat Thai’s success opened pathways for exciting Thai eateries across Sydney, from more recent arrivals such as Porkfat to older favorites like Caysorn." - Lee Tran Lam

Wow, I haven't been back to OG Chat Thai in years and it's still going strong. Seems to be getting even more popular as the years go on, too. Especially with the local Thai community (which is a great sign, as a person with Thai background). I had a table of six on this occasion for a reunion. We all enjoyed the food. I my personal favourite is their sai ouah (northern Thai pork sausage). Exactly how Chiang Mai does it. Server claims it is house made, although I cannot confirm this. I also love that they have many options for Thai desserts. Important to note that one dessert portion is recommended to be shared between two people, it is large for dessert. Service was really good: friendly, helpful and always present. As a Thai person, this is so good to see that the restaurant is doing so good after so many years in business.

My family used to having meals here so brought me here. Chicken & pork skewers are nice, red curry chicken with rice, good to eat with rice! Service is good too! Easy to get there.

5/5 must try in Sydney! We didn’t reserve table ahead but wait was not long. Food was delicious and service was attentive. Must try their prawn dishes, they were the best!

We didn’t have time to take a photo of the spring roll and pad Thai, only the mango sticky rice. Everything was amazing, food was delicious, friendly staff. Highly recommended

After an exhausting but very successful day at the 2025 Sydney Stamp and Coin Show, we took the advice of many of our Sydney customers and dined at Chat Thai Haymarket, just around the corner from our hotel, Metro Marlow. We were not disappointed — the experience was everything we hoped for: casual dining, fast and friendly service, and delicious, authentic Thai food. A perfect way to unwind after a busy day. Highly recommend!

Google
One of the long standing Thai dining institution in Sydney. The pandan kaya doughnut is a must every time I dine here. It’s a bit of wait to get a table. On Saturday night it took us 30min. Staffs were efficient and hospitable. I appreciate the venue didn’t impose a strict dining time although they’d secretly want you to vacant soon after. All the food tasted good and price is reasonable. 3 of us were sharing king prawns tomyum, somtum (papaya salad), snapper fish fillet, pandan donuts and 2 rice for $113. I prefer dine at this thainatown location as the taste more consistent than other sites.

I’m reading all the reviews after visiting this place and can’t understand why there are low scores. We loved everything we tried, it was one of the best tom yum and duck I’ve ever tried. Service is ok, but it’s super busy and it is expected. I guess to this place you don’t come for service but you come to eat good food. Overall service was good and dishes were served super fast . Portions are huge. It’s perfect for big companies, so you can order different meals and share.

The foods is always delicious. We love the new dish, noodle tom yum sauce.

Yelp
This place was very over the top busy so I choose. There was a wait for about 10 minutes. You have to order and pay at front. Ordered a few dishes they did not come out family style. The spicy dishes are very spicy. The dishes did not come out strong steaming hot. The shrimp pad Thai did not have enough rice and six shrimp. The beef was not cooked well.

Yelp
This place is busy! But I guess that's a good thing. It is a little small width wise but the restaurant is long. I thought the food contained too much fish sauce for my taste, but my Vietnamese plus one thought it was very authentic and delicious! The food is still tasty, but my favorite was the desserts they have displayed at the front of the restaurant. Definitely try out the desserts! Super delicious.

Yelp
Stopped by this place for a spot of lunch. Was a great YELP find, I love this app. Anyway, the food, had the beef salad, spicy, authentic and delicious. Spicy cashew chicken also a hit. The Padt Si Ew, was just average, not bad, but average. Loved the authentic offering aluminum drinking glasses on the table when we arrived. The service good, sat down. The menu was extensive and I mean EXTENSIVE. The ambiance, was cool and a fun atmosphere inside. All in all, it was a good place for a fun lunch. Would recommend.

Yelp
Follow the lines in AUS. I saw a line for Chat Thai so I came and it was one of the better thai food I've had...but it's probably a bit too pricey for how much you are given. I had the amy's noodles which I love the noodles as they were really tasty and had a lot of "wok he." The prawns werent that great(they're not that terrible)...I did love the veggies cause along with the noodles they were packed with flavors. I'll definitely consider coming back.

Yelp
Yummy yummy yummy!! This place was friendly and service was great. The restaurant is small but cozy. They have beautiful flowers at the cashier station which is nice to look at while you are waiting to pay your tab. All plates were delicious but I will say the most memorable plate was the fish mango. The mango salad paired beautifully with it. Amy's hungry noodles were the right amount of spicy. They were tangy and rich in flavor. If you're in the area, don't skip out on this restaurant. Cheers!

Yelp
Nice buzzy ambience without the greasy floor of fast food asian places. I like the decor of the place. We may not have ordered the right dishes to give this place a true rating. We ordered minced chicken with green beans over steamed rice. Pretty good. I wished that there were a lot more green beans. A bit of spicy ness mixed in. I also ordered rice vermicelli with bamboo shoots, eggplant, chicken. The waiter told us that it was too spicy. But it came out smelling like rotten food (fish sauce overused?). I took one poof of the air above it, had one bite and felt like that I was going to throw up eating this and had to abandon it. This place opens late and the line is quite long even at 11pm. We waited for 15 minutes to get seated.

Yelp
The food was amazing here. If you don't have a reservation come a little early for dinner and they can usually get you in. If the dishes come with chilies do note they can run spicy. The service was great and the food came out quickly. Overall delicious and a lovely time. We went two days in a row!!!

Yelp
WOW! Such amazing food! The Pad Thai was amazing! Don't let the line scare you, it moves quickly. This is a place that you MUST try!

Yelp
Meh. Overrated. We found some blogs that raved about chat Thai and couldn't wait to come to try. Chat Thai was a bit further out from the other places that we tried, and we ended up taking a bus to get there. However, when we got there at 9pm, there was still a wait. So I was really excited, especially when there's such a demand from a restaurant outside of typical dining hours. However... our experience was far from good tho. Some background, I'm from LA and we are very lucky because where I'm from, Thai food is good, plentiful, and cheap. A good meal will probably set me back $30USD.. but here it set me back about $80AUD, approximately $60USD, which for what we had was overrated and overpriced. What we ordered What was good: the puff crab omelette, which was tasty and a bit different. It was a bit on the oilier side. meh: papaya salad, which had fresh ingredients and with a little spice, kinda kicked our butts. Interesting: the fresh steam roll. I'm not sure if I loved it or not. Overall, over priced and ok tasting. I'd skip this place if you're used to the Thai food somewhere else.

Yelp
Always been and always will be my favorite place to eat while I'm in Sydney. Yes, my first stop most of the time. Chat Thai never failed me. Suggestion to eat there with several people so you can share dishes and try some of the menu. Superb. Today I went there just 2 of us. So we ate individual dish. We love our pick. Take a look on the picture.

Yelp
Very popular Thai restaurant in Sydney, and I visited two locations, 20 Campbell St and Gateway Shopping Center. The first visit was at the Campbell St location, and as other reviewers have noted, it is very busy. You sign yourself in (which wasn't clear to everyone standing in line) and be prepared to wait. Being a solo diner, I was offered the bar, which I accepted since I was starving at that point. Facing a brick wall is not the greatest atmosphere, but the service was prompt and the food was good. Cashier was friendly as well. I would return to this location. The Gateway location was an attractive, convenient and much larger restaurant. Those are the compliments. I echo the reviewer who mentioned "late" is a confusing term to this restaurant. With no one in line and a half-empty, I was seated by a very haughty male host about 9 p.m. Immediately he asked if I wanted the bar. This time I declined since there were open tables clearly in view. He reluctantly seated me and disappeared. One of the reasons I enjoy Thai restaurants is for the graciousness of the Thai people. That quality does not exist at this location. The same host returns to take my order, and feels the need to add a further dig with "The kitchen will be closing soon". OK, whatever. He serves the food with zero personality or friendliness, and disappears. When I asked another server for some water, she looks at me like I asked for a deep-fried infant. She couldn't be bothered, and yells for the host without informing him of my simple request. So I repeat the request for water. What Thai restaurant doesn't automatically serve water anyway? You've been warned, fellow diners.

Yelp
A wonderful find in Sydney, across from the Capitol Theatre . Just be prepared for a wait - there will be a long line of people to get in . We waited 15-20 minutes

Yelp
Came a long way with Chat Thai. I have grown to like it. You have to know your menu but I really enjoyed the minced pork with basil, especially if you can take the heat. Instantly clear all sinuses! All the classic Thai dishes are very well prepared and absolutely delicious.

Yelp
I can see why there was a 30 minute queue, at least, on a Saturday night and this was early. Line up, put your name down and take a number. No bookings. Best to come with no more than 4 people. Menu is substantial. Classic Thai dishes or go rogue. Whatever you get is sure to please. As busy as they were, our food came within 5 minutes of ordering. Before our drinks! Yummy flavours, like the spicy green papaya salad, creamy red curry with duck and Pad Thai, for my less adventurous friend. Can't complain! It was crowded and noisy so don't go on a first date. Do go on an empty stomach. I dare you not to sleep after your meal! Delicious.

Yelp
My friend who has been living in Sydney for a year or two decided to take my friend and I to this place since her other friend recommended this place. When we got here, the place was PACKED. We put our name on the waiting list, and we waited for about 30 min. We ordered a variety of dishes and shared them. I forgot the names of the dishes in particular, but we got a papaya salad, some red curry, some soft-shelled crab dish, and pad thai. The papaya salad and curry were rightfully spicy, and since I can't handle spicy food all that well, I didn't eat too much of it. The soft-shelled crab was delicious, and I would definitely recommend that dish! The pad thai is my go to Thai dish and it tasted good as well! Overall, this is a great Thai place, but be aware of the long wait!

Yelp
If it looks crowded, don't be deterred. They have a second floor. Three friends and I came in on a Thursday at around 2. It was crowded but thankfully, we didn't have to wait. To start, we all shared the spring rolls ($10), which consisted of smoked fish sausages, chicken and crab with caramelised tamarind relish. We only ordered it because everyone on Yelp kept raving about it, but I didn't really like it. The 'fish sausages' (whatever that is - I'm not sure I even want to know) tasted kind of spongey. On top of that (literally) was the sauce they drizzled on it, which was way too sweet. It almost tasted like it belonged on a dessert, and not an appetizer. So why the 4 stars? Well, you can't really judge a restaurant on one dish - least of all an appetizer. Its saving grace was the khau gai noodles, which was on their 'specials' menu. It's similar to pad see ew, so if you like flat (non-spicy) noodles, this dish is perfect for you. But if you're like me and you do like the spice, it does come with a side of sriracha-like sauce. You know that feeling where you're so full but the food is so good that you just want to keep eating it? This was one of those times. I'm pretty sure I finished off every last morsel of that noodle dish. Bottom line - go to Chat Thai, avoid the spring rolls but do get yourself some noodles!

Yelp
We came here because it was one of the few restaurants near us open past 10, but it exceeded every expectation! From the appetizer, drinks and entree to the dessert, everything we ordered was delicious. There's a great ambiance and I highly recommend this place for a late night meal... open until 2!

Yelp
It was 10pm when we finished our Sydney BridgeClimb experience and we were hungry and ready for dinner. In America, we're used to explicit business hours but the laid back Australian closing time of "late" got the best of us. The restaurants we thought would be open looked at us like we were crazy since to them, "late" was already here. After being turned away by several options, we headed over to Chat Thai, knowing that it really closes at 2am (kitchen closes at 1:30am). Even late at night, there was a small line. That's always a great sign! The food descriptions looked authentic and there were definitely ethnic Thai customers. We ordered 3 items: Khao Soi, a $5 mini soup egg noodle, and grilled Crying Tiger. I am obsessed with khao soi and it's my go-to whenever I see it on a menu. The khao soi here was not the best I've ever had. The topping that came in the separate little plate was way too salty. Maybe I wasn't supposed to dump the whole thing in. The noodles were still enjoyable despite the overly salty flavor. My friend liked both the grilled beef as well as the soup noodles. This was a soothing dinner for a late night. Even though we were full, I wanted to try their mango with sticky rice. There were two "mounds" of sticky rice - one normal and one mixed with pandan.

Yelp
Wowwww!! Late hours brought me to this restaurant. It's everything the reviews say it is. You get more than you expect after drooling over the photos. The art, the brick walls, watching them fry up the donuts... It's a great vibe. Very popular spot it appears. The have a very nice menu, book style. Many pages and great pictures. Everything we ordered came out delicious. The papaya salad was so fresh crunchy and spicy. The pad Thai was yummy topped with plenty of bean sprouts. You can really taste the quality of the ingredients. As I'm writing this, I'm craving the food again. We were absolutely full but had to order the donuts. The gentleman next to us finished an entire order of it to himself, it had to be good! And it was! Dipped in the subtle sweet green tea sauce, heaven. Perfect to finish off the meal.
google avatar

Nino D.

Yelp
Food ordered: Fried pork belly Fried mackerel Green curry - chicken All good! Service from the waiting staff was good. There was an argument between the shift manager and a customer, which served as a somewhat entertaining incident. We didn't order dessert, as we were almost rushed out to pay for our meals. This was a tad disappointing, and the reason why I can't give this place a higher rating. Good late night offering.
google avatar

Christine T.

Yelp
One of my favourite go-to place for a late night feed! Absolutely love their late night menu!! It's always super busy, but definitely worth the wait!!
google avatar

Maus M.

Yelp
Insanely good. It's seriously spicy hot. 3 weeks in Thailand from Chiang Mai to Bangkok to Pattaya- I have never had spice this hot. Truly amazing. Great prices for the portions. Also a very impressive array of beverages and desserts. I'm not sure what I had for dessert other than some kind of dumpling with shredded coconut, but it was fantastic. I am looking forward to sweating again.
google avatar

Yelp
Great food, great ambiance if you don't mind to wait for a bit (20 min average waiting time if you are willing to have a share table) The flavors are popping up but a bit spicy for my taste. If you ask on a Thai restaurant if the dish is spicy and they tell you "noooo" ...it will be. Overall, great culinary experience.

Bryan S.

Yelp
Was looking for some really good late night Thai and this place was everything I could have imagined. I'm used to the Pad Thai in the US and this was no comparison..unbelievable and now ruined any Thai food I have from here on out back in the US because nothing will ever compare. Ambiance was pretty cool and artsy too. Bravo guys, you've got the perfect mix. I saw someone else in these reviews talking about It being over priced but honestly I thought It was pretty reasonable. I don't know what gluttonous amount of alcohol or additional sauces they were getting that boosted their bill higher than what they expected but we didn't spend more than $20USD here with a delicious appetizer and Pad Thai which fed both of us plus a drink. I feel that's pretty reasonable especially since back home in the city we could pay upwards of $40 to feed two people with quality being half as good. I suppose if you want to try the whole menu in one night for the sake of being a tourist and not being able to have the opportunity again, then yes, it could get expensive. I hate to call out the same person twice, but this was also the person who claimed to be from LA where there's "good" Thai food..... i find It ironic that someone is comparing THIS almost-as-close-to-Thailand-as-you-could-get-without-being-Thailand FOOD, to their more familiar their food from LA, which more than likely provides a deliciously-over-filtered-over-processed-commercialized-far-from-authentically-Thai-and-most-likely-gentrified-DTLA-VERSION of thai food.......and actually claimed that that's BETTER..............................................................................................BUT THATS NONE OF MY BUSINESS

Yelp
One of the BEST thai places in Sydney! I stumbled upon Chat Thai at around 2pm, scribbled my name onto the waiting list and ripped off my numbered ticket. I stood by the waiting list and read everyone's names to kill some time (which probably sent off some stalkerish vibes) and read through the thorough menu. After about 20mins or so, we were awarded for our patience by being seated and we were overly-prepared to order! I can't remember exactly what we ordered but I do recall that the food was very appe-THAI-zing ;D The staff were super friendly too! Apparently, they had served us a dish with the wrong condiments on the side, unbeknownst to me. We had chowed through half the dish accompanied by the incorrect sauce (which still tasted awesome) before a waiter came by, swiped up the dish, was very apologetic and replaced it with a fresh, new one with the right sauce. Honestly, I don't even know how they realised we had been given the wrong condiment since it had already been a few minutes and we didn't signal that anything was wrong with it, but kudos to them for being on the ball. So, if you get the opportunity to visit Chat Thai, I would highly recommend it (for the spec-THAI-cular service)

Yelp
I can see them carrying pitchforks, and chanting bloody murder... the look in their baleful eyes, as they train them on my soul, hold a promise that it won't be quick... that's the nature of elite foodie Yelpers, and they gon' be on me like Elvis on a cheeseburger. Soz peeps my experience here just wasn't that good and my expectations were set high. It was nowhere near what I get at Home or Prik Thai - where I am treated like royalty and the food is amazing. The Khanom Jeeb here were exceptional, granted, but they were entree. The service was also very good. The wait was short and our server was vivacious and colourful, which always helps. But... my main was a huge let down. I had the Crying Tiger, which tends to be either done very well by Thai restaurants, or done very poorly, and sadly I was very disappointed with it here. The beef wasn't tender at all and the sauce was not the traditional spicy flavour explosion that I have come to expect. If it's any consolation my co-worker said the Pad Thai was the best he'd ever had (and he's eaten with me at both the other places), but I don't rate Thai places on how well they do their most pedestrian dish. The complexity in the Crying Tiger wasn't there and the simple lack of tenderness killed it for me. Whilst I will be back to try Chat Thai again, my first experience was memorable for the wrong reasons :(

Yelp
Chat Thai is my favourite Thai restaurant in Sydney. The food here is so good, the average waiting time at dinner hours is 40 minutes. [Photo] Fresh spring rolls of smoked fish sausages, chicken and crab with caramelised tamarind relish, $11. This is one of my favourite dishes. It's served room temperature, with relish drizzled on top. I first tried it when I came on a date with my dear friend, Nee. This was the dish she picked. It's not something that I would usually order; but that's the beauty of eating out with different people, because you never know when you would be pleasantly surprised by other people's choices. [Photo] Green papaya salad with peanuts and dried shrimps, $13. This used to be my must-order, however, I slowly got over it as it seems to have gotten too hot for my liking over the years. Still, probably the best green papaya salad in town.

Yelp
Became regulars here even on our short stay in Sydney. Everything we ate was delicious - the padt si-ew, the beef, the khao padt gai (chicken fried rice, picked based on other reviews), the padt kana mhu grob (pork belly, picked based on other reviews), and the par tuhng go (fried dough, picked after we saw how popular they were on our first visit). There can be a wait on even the random mid-week night, but they move pretty fast and the food is delicious. Great service too!
google avatar

Terry D.

Yelp
Definitely the place to go for late nighters like me, usually busy in the early hours.Good thing is they close late till 2 am and the food is affordable as well. Loved their chicken satay skewer, fresh spring rolls, crying tiger their really yummy. My partner ordered the green papaya salad... my goodness it was really "SPICY" he can barely eat after a few mouthfuls. So be sure to tell them the level of spiciness you like coz you're tastebuds would surely die. The desserts are to die for surely, my favorite is the sticky rice with coconut cream and palm sugar. And the coconut ice cream just melts in your mouth so creamy and subtle in the tastebuds.
google avatar

Hannah D.

Yelp
I don't pretend to be an expert on what authentic Thai food tastes like (or even good Thai) for that matter.. but Chat Thai just does good food. Full stop. I always enjoy all the dishes we order here. It's a huge menu and you worry that you're going to miss out on something by ordering the wrong plates. However, that seems impossible - it all works out in the end. I still need to work my way through more of the desserts, but the ones I've tried were really nice. The mango and sweet coconut sticky rice and most recently the 'iced bread' -- which is insane (and awesome). I love that they're open late. We wandered here around 11pm last weekend for a dessert.

Yelp
Chat Thai is meant to be one of those 'institution' places that you just HAVE to go to at least once in your foodie lifetime. The two of us had a 15 minute wait in the cold and were eventually seated on a share table with a lady on her own. It wasn't the most awkward thing, but it was probably worse for her! The place is tiny, and they really manage to squeeze people into every nook and cranny. The seating is borderline uncomfortable, so it's not the kind of place you go to wine and dine and hang out for a couple of hours - you're in and you're out before you know it! The food also left a bit to be desired from. The cold spring rolls were great - something different and probably unique that we've never had. The Pad See Ew was also yum, but nothing super special. Unfortunately the Massaman was a big letdown. I think they tried to get a little too fancy with it - too much cardamom, too much sugar. Unfortunately it was almost inedible, and just lacked that delicious nutty savouriness that it needs. Honestly, it would be hard to get us back - there are just so many amazing Thai places these days that it's not worth the hassle, the wait, and the sore bum. Sorry guys.

Yelp
I haven't been this excited by a restaurant in a long while. Chat Thai's main game seems to be Thai-style sweets and deserts, but their Midnight Bites, $5 for things like spring rolls and noodle dishes, just became my post-pub destination. Judging by the lines that greeted us at 11PM, everyone else is thinking much the same thing. Crowds or no, we were still seated and served water and menus almost instantaneously. We jumped straight in with a serve of gai yaang, chicken grilled in turmeric and lemongrass ($10), and a spicy noodle curry called khao aoi ($12). The latter was the clear winner, being both fragrant and warming, perfect for a rainy night. My friend and I couldn't even go near the smoked chili oil - be sure to taste a little before spooning in. Unable to resist a bargain, I also ordered the ba mee mu daeng (usually $10.90). This felt much more like street food, with the dumplings, barbeque pork and noodles being served separately and with little garnish, but the food was fresh and the flavors simple and refreshing - especially after the full flavors of the other dishes. I also ordered a traditional thai coffee with caramelized milk. Nothing special there - the 'caramelized milk' seeming too similar to the condensed variety. Other diners seemed to be enjoying the chilled coffees though, so I'll have to give them a try next time. By the end we were too stuffed to even consider desserts, but no doubt I'll soon try a few. I've been thinking of an excuse to go back. If that's not the sign of a great place, I'm not sure what is.
google avatar

Jenny K.

Yelp
There is this little speck of Thai food in Haymarket called Thai Town and if you don't see the tiny small sign you'll miss it. But I've seen the reviews of a certain spot and I've got to try Chat Thai. Okay at first glance I am pumped!!! I'm pretty sure that if the menus are falling apart, it means many hands have touched them! The place is fairly skinny but really tall with exposed beams and brick. Bright and colourful lights with electric artwork and my water was served in a silver cup. I don't want to come off speculating but I'm pretty sure that it was packed with Thai people (always a good sign) What a friendly host who placed me at my table. Per usual I don't know what to order, it's fine. It's my M.O. I order the Raad Na with a pork skewer on the side. The Raad Na reminds me of a Chinese dish with the fatty savoury gravy. The noodles, fat and slippery fight the bite size chicken to be devoured. I can't help to spoon the sauce like soup. Slurps good. And the pork, The sauce is one of the best I've ever had. Definitely recommend!!! P. S don't forget to grab the tiny desserts :(

Yelp
This place is awesome! If you're ever in the mood for late night Thai then this is your go to. Be prepared for long lines if you go around dinner time - even going in for a meal at 9pm, when a lot of places are on their last order, there's a wait. But it's worth it!
google avatar

Michelle B.

Yelp
Had the duck + seasonal veggies and the mango + sticky rice, and both were delicious! Also, very cute inside with brick walls, high ceilings, and a second floor. Note, I'm staying nearby, have already visited twice (I've only ordered take-out from their fast pick-up counter by the front door), and every time I walk by, it has been packed!
google avatar

Yelp
Another great Thai. I have been to all the Chat Thai's in Sydney, but this one is the best!! Very authentic Thai street food. It's a bit more expensive but you get what you order and it is delicious every time you come. Despite having obviously the same dishes as other Thai restaurants the taste is different. Go try it. the long Q in front speaks for itself.

Yelp
Good food and good ambience. Always crowded, people are willing to wait because it's good!

Yelp
* Put your name in and grab a number! Line goes by pretty quickly. Decide if you want to share a table with another group or just your own. * THEY WILL NOT SPLIT. Even with cash & single card. * Food varies in spice. Some were MUCH spicier than others. * Overall - food was great. Some dishes were much more memorable than others. Decor is pretty. Lots of seating upstairs! Meal: 24. Yum Nuea (beef salad) - Too spicy. Our table barely could finish this dish. 38. Mhu Grob Padt Prik Khing (crisp pork belly) - SO good!!! 54. BPLA Choo Chee (Crisp whole snapper in red curry) - Super delicious! Sauce goes great with rice. 60. Ki Mao (rice noodles & chicken) - great - not earth-shattering. Your typical to-go thai food. Desserts: 13. Sticky Rice & Mango - Typical. Not anything special. Serving is pretty small (did not look like the photo at all) 29. Khao Nieaw Daam Bieak (black sticky rice & coconut pudding) - Pretty good. Interesting mix of flavors.

Yelp
Good food. Ordered Pad Thai, vegetables and chili chicken. Attentive, friendly, quick service. Lively atmosphere. We should have listened to our server who said the chicken was very spicy. We eat very spicy, but could not eat this chicken. Our bad. We sat toward the front. A strong cold breeze blew continuously at us. Soon both we and our food were cold. The brick walls - nice to look at - reflect sound. The music, turned way up to overcome the noise, was more like shouting. Unpleasant. Take out would have been great, but I would not dine in again.

Yelp
Chat Thai is one of those places that has been around for decades and has a reputation for being consistently best in class. With an amazing menu combining contemporary and traditional Thai dishes, this establishment has amazed me with the quality and flavour that no other Thai place (though limited to Australia so far) ever has. I will be disappointed if you are! Don't wait around to try this place, though as always, get in early to avoid the queue.

Yelp
A moment in modern Thailand. My roommate was craving Thai food one day and it so happens that she was just walking around Chinatown and she found the restaurant. She then went in to have lunch and she said that this is her new comfort food. She had the Pad Thai. I then went to the restaurant with her to go check it out and once I stepped foot in the restaurant, I felt as if I was one with the vibe; great food, great restaurant setting and design. However, since they are serving at two floors, the waiter and waitresses may take a while to come up to you and take your requests. Make sure you know what you want and ask him or her to take out everything (water, condiments, cutleries etc.) at once so that you won't have to wait once your food arrives.

Yelp
Using US Thai food as a benchmark, Chat Thai's food is off the chart's fantastic! As you walk in you are assaulted by the dessert counter on your right- all kinds of sweet Thai treats beckon you to indulge- but save it for the savory stuff- The flavours in the food reminded me of the Thai food I had when I visited Thailand. I had a shrimp Cake that was like a little crispy shrimp cloud with a sweet little dipping sauce that was just delicious. Chicken laarb was Thai Spicy- Loved it- Tons of fresh mint, coriander, ground roasted rice, chillies lime juice, fish sauce-Yum. Curries where full flavored, robust and hot! Chat Thai, can I take you home with me?! This is the benchmark by which all Thai restaurants should be judged.

Yelp
One of my fave thai places in the Chinatown district. Always packed unless you come early or late, this place is famous for its desserts. Sometimes I come here just for dessert after having dinner elsewhere. Its that good. But that's not saying the food is terrible. Its actually delicious as well. Try the signature som dtum (warning its super spicy), the satay sticks (both pork or chicken), the pork belly with ginger or the curries. Safe options include the chicken with cashew nuts, pad thai or pad si-ew. Then come the desserts. I love most of them, especially if it includes sticky or glutinous rice (the best!), coconut milk, sweet potato or sago. I've had one weird dessert though, I forget what its called but it was icy and had sweet bread in it. Don't order this one if you see this in the description. Also another thing, they give you the menu, but a lot of the desserts aren't available and the sticky rice desserts sell out really quickly, so its a bit hit and miss sometimes. But all in all Chat Thai is fantastic. Try it early or late one night ;)

Yelp
I'm guessing that because Chat Thai serves dishes I didn't even taste while visiting the country, it must be some of the most authentic stuff around. Right? Well, that seems to be the case at least as far as fellow chain Thai diners go. This edition in Thainatown is totally packed from 12 o'clock onwards, so be prepared to wait for a table if you can't get there earlier. The larb gai, laced with sliced red onion and plenty of mint is especially spicy compared to other places I've tried it here - probably, true to original recipes. On one dinner visit, a friend and I opted for something a little different - the gaeng som cha-om goong was definitely that, a very light and not creamy curry made with an orange-tamarind soup base, filled with poached prawns and squares of omelette that soaked up the sour juices. If you come for a late lunch, be sure to keep an eye out for the pre-made fresh mango and sticky coconut rice desserts stacked up on the kitchen counter by the till - perfectly positioned to tempt sweet toothes on their way out the door.

Yelp
We went in fairly late one week night night after seeing a movie. We had the green chicken curry to share and I was annoyed that I wasn't more hungry (thanks to the jumbo popcorn!) because there are so many things on the menu that I would like to try. The food coming out around us looked and smelt soooo good! Our curry was really good and authentic (baby eggplants and all) Service was friendly and efficient and I will be back to sample more of the menu for sure.

Yelp
I can't really say anything bad about this place because I had a free meal here with my team from work. The staff were able to seat 15 of us together which is amazing feat during peak lunch time in Sydney. The food was prepared and presented in a timely although somewhat rushed manner and the taste makes it quite evident.

Yelp
Some of the staff was uptight.(one day for lunch didn't want to let us sit upstairs, another day for dinner they gave me attitude because I asked for a table for 3 and didn't know of the signup sheet). It may just be my American standards. Pad Thai was very good, green curry was ok, crying tiger had a lot of fat and was too chewy. Would come in again if I'm in the mood at 1am because they are one of the best places open very late.

Yelp
When I went to Chat Thai I thought I was going to take a step back into Bangkok with the sight, smell and taste of the food. However, this particular experience of mine was an extreme let down. I first arrived at the restaurant with high expectations, however, with a thirty minute wait outside I decided that the food would at least help to lift my spirits. This was not the case. After the disgruntled waitress showed us to our seats we were presented with torn and sticky menus. This was not the positive outcome that I was hoping for. I decided that I would order a Thai seafood salad. I enjoy spicy food but on this occassion after the first two bites I could not feel my tongue and was sweating. I thought it was just me and so I asked my Thai friend, whom eats more spicy food than I do, to have a bite of my food and he to could not handle it. I asked the waitress if they could do anything to help me with this unique experience and she then rolled her eyes and without saying anything just brought a menu and removed the plate. I felt as if I had done something wrong to offend her. Anyways by the end of the night I had to pay for two entrees and some iced tea to get the feeling back in my mouth. Definitely an experience I won't forget.

Yelp
Very good Thai food, and it's also pretty spicy. We got there around 5:30 and still waited about 20 mins. The menu has standard Thai dishes you see everywhere (pad see ew, pad thai, curries), but also a lot of different dishes I haven't seen elsewhere before. Wanting to only try new things, we decided to not get anything we've had in the past and ordered: - GAENG NUEA YAANG (20AUD) Grilled beef coconut curry with betel leaves Creamy curry that got spicier and spicier the more I ate. Fascinated by the betel nut as a stimulant in many parts of Asia, we were curious to try the leaf. It tastes like a leafy herb with a slightly smoky taste that reminds me of tobacco. I'm probably good on betel leaves for a while. - MHU GROB PADT PRIK KHING (18AUD) Stir-fried pork belly and wild ginger in red curry paste Delicious- by far my favorite dish. The pork belly had a nice layer of crisp, followed by a caramelized layer of skin and fat. The curry paste paired perfectly with the green beans in the dish and was super tasty with coconut rice (4AUD). - ROSELLE + JUJUBE ICE TISANE (4.5AUD) Herbal tea drink with a strong jujube taste. Very refreshing. We had just eaten lunch a few hours prior, so we weren't starving, but I was bummed that we couldn't order more dishes to try. The restaurant is trendy, yet small, with a main kitchen in the back and what looked like a desserts and appetizer kitchen in the front. You can watch through the windows the team making soup and papaya salad.
