Mathieu Kergourlay - Château de Boisgelin

"Chef Mathieu Kergourlay welcomes diners to this 450-hectare property and small castle, tastefully restored and decorated by his companion and himself. The tasty, generous and consummately crafted food is full of surprises, such as the mini pissaladière reworked by the chef, which is served with a marinated fillet of mackerel, perfectly grilled over the BBQ." - Michelin Inspector

The chateau is a very imposing building and its setting is beautiful. Hare's running on the golf course whilst the lake was shrouded in mist in the early morning was quite magical. Our requests for a walk in shower were met and the staff were very obliging both before and during our stay. The welcome at Reception when we arrived was charming and we were shown to our room after a quick downstairs tour. We had booked a superior room with a golf course view. The view was lovely but the room, albeit a fair size and in pristine condition, lacked a few comforts. The two dining chairs were not comfortable for relaxing and a small sofa replacing one of them, which would have fitted into the room, would enhance it considerably. The bathroom was quite spacious but had a lack of shelves to put toothpaste, shaving foam etc so was frustrating. Downstairs, the bar was too brightly lit such that after dinner we didn't bother lingering with a drink but headed upstairs to our room where at least we could lie on the bed. The dining room is modern and attractive and we were given a lovely window table for dinner. We opted for the half board option which was very reasonably priced for very good food. The mullet as a main course was delicate and perfectly cooked and the amuse bouches were also enjoyable. Breakfast the following morning was in another attractive room and was adequate for the 18 Euros charged. You have to order your main choices the night before which is not a major issue and the cold continental selection (there is the option of boiled eggs that you cook yourself and waffles) consisted of quality produce. The honey from the grounds was particularly nice as was the semi salted butter and rustic bread. Coffee was very drinkable and we ate well. Perhaps it is our age, but I like a chateau that reflects its age and character and whereas I can fully understand that the young team want a modern look which most people seem to love, I would prefer a few comforts in a traditional ambiance. However, the Hotel Mathieu Kergourlay does what it does well and deserves every success. The restaurant was full on a Thursday night so clearly it has a good following. We enjoyed our visit and felt it was fair value for money with a range of reasonably priced wines and overall, we had a lovely visit on our brief visit to France.

We had a great time, very nice visit with 🐶. Two things, you guys have to stop with vinegar on your towels, stinks like hell, use less or prefer bicarbonate of soda, same effect and doesn’t smell. Second, elevate breakfast, having lunch, dinner and a great club with nice food and absolute horrid breakfast is ridiculous.

Everything as good as expected. Attentive staff, good food, a treat to stay overnight en route. Large room, well equiped. Dining in the very modern dining room - unexpectedly modern/cool decor!- excellent food as other reports lead us to expect. Perhaps not the easiest to find, some homework on location would be good, depending on where you're coming from. Good value for what is offered.

Cannot recommend this place enough. Stylish newly refirbished interiors, comfortable rooms, beautiful surroundings (it's a real small castle), gorgeous food and drinks - and most welcoming staff ever. We stayed only one night during our tour and wished we could stay longer!

We decided to visit the new look restaurant in the chateau, after having an enjoyable game of golf here. Not sure it’s a great challenge for golf as it’s not a full 18 holes but nonetheless the round was interesting and the holes between the chateau and the old. manor house very pretty. We could not get a lunch there on Wednesday as it’s the chef’s day off and the newly refurbished place and restaurant has only just reopened with new management under the young chef Matthieu Kergourlay. However on the basis of a delicious cake and coffee alternative, we decided to try out the restaurant later on during our stay in this area. We enjoyed a lovely evening drink on the terrace overlooking the course, then into the restaurant which is very bright and pretty.||||Everyone enjoyed their 4 course 50 euro meal celebrating local Breton ingredients and suppliers which is to be applauded. I particularly enjoyed the celebration of carrots and the general use of vegetables throughout the meal which is something we don’t often enjoy in other local restaurants in Brittany. My other eating partners enjoyed the veal sweetbreads and beetroot purée but felt the shellfish with it served no purpose. My John Dory and accompanying veg were good but not spectacular. My eating partners also loved the sour milk ice cream with buckwheat biscuit but I was not keen on the strawberry tart - rather jammy and sweet . If you love the particular taste of buckwheat (ble noir) you will enjoy when it figures in the menu. The main thing is this restaurant and it’s young chef will surely make it a gastronomic destination and I’m sure the rooms are equally of high standard. If I were a golfer only I’d be disappointed that they can’t provide snacks in the bar during chefs day off in future on Wednesdays? Good luck to the new team.

This recently renovated hotel is elegant, comfortable and welcoming. I cannot say enough to recommend it! It is near enough to Paimpol and the coast but away from the built up aspects of the larger towns. It is located outside of Plehedel which is a bit off the beaten track but that is is charm. It is on a very large property which the owner has given over to both a golf course and protected forest lands where a 15 mile (+/-) walking trail through the forest is available to the public. The rooms have marble bathrooms, new carpeting, etc. The bar is lovely with a view of the grounds. The restaurant is fabulous- mentioned by Michelin. I had the weekday lunch which was 2 courses but they proffered a plate with 3 small appetizers and another plate with 3 tiny desserts in addition. Very good food beautifully presented and not at all expensive.

Could not have been more disappointed. We booked a hotel with a restaurant and after driving all day and passing multiple towns we arrived to only be told there was no dinner reservation available for us. Of all the places we chose, we this was a personal recommendation from an owner of a château in the loire valley highly suggesting the restaurant. We explained that to the lady at the front and graciously asked for an exception of any kind even offered to pay more. Instead she wanted to make us a reservation in the closest town 15 minutes away. This is completely off season and literally no one around. Spending another 30 minutes in the car after a long day of driving only o go to an empty restaurant with few menu selections. Again, extremely disappointing when we only have a few nights to enjoy delicious French food. A dinner reservation should have been an optional selection on booking if it is so limited. Overall I felt completely unwelcome and wished I had not gotten stuck staying here.
