Hostellerie du Château des Monthairons

"A thick slab of pan-fried duck foie gras with Granny Smith apple chutney; fillet of beef, new potatoes; game in season: this family-run château restaurant serves heart-warming food that adds the occasional contemporary spin to a patriotic line-up of French recipes. The historic château, set in the Meuse Valley and originally a Benedictine monastery, is magnificent with mouldings, old parquet floors, and plush drapes." - Michelin Inspector

WOW! This place is so beautiful and the staff were so helpful and kind. Onsite dinner was incredible, every course was beautiful and delicious. The grounds were lovely to stroll, and I enjoyed the details of the Château. Highly recommend to all!

Wow! The front desk, even before we arrived is the best hotel staff I spoke with, super friendly, knowledgeable, and eager to help, always smiling even with the mask, the rooms are as advertised in an old well renovated castle, so you get exactly what advertised. I found that their dinner is excellent and the servers did an amazing job catering to our need. Absolutely a must stay here if you are in the area!

Gorgeous residence, spacious and spotlessly clean room; exquisite meal; friendly and responsive staff. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to "live like queens and kings" for a while. Thank you, wonderful staff, we shall not forget your kindness.

Very pretty Chateau with beautiful flowers, big grass fields and a cute river. We had a very nice dinner at the restaurant and stayed with our dog which was very welcome here. Also - friendly and attentive staff - can’t wait to go back one day. Best stay at a Chateau 🏰

The best hotel I’ve ever stayed at in my life. Now, I’m only 31 so I guess I don’t have as much reference as some older folks, but Le Château des Monthairons offered a wonderful experience. The rooms are unique, spacious, quiet, and comfortable. The staff was genuinely kind, respectful, and dedicated. My father and I had dinner at the Château every evening of our stay. We were not even wanting to try another restaurant in the area I was so satisfied with the menu available. Breakfast was generous and delicious. The Chateau lies on beautiful grounds where you can go for a walk though the forest. The Meuse flows through the property where you can sit and enjoy watching the herons. It is peaceful and quiet. Ideal location for visiting WW1 memorial sites. Be sure to have a car!

Hotel grounds are superb. Park needs a bit of work, but pleasant. Room is a good size, bedding good, but finishings are 3 star. Bathroom ok. All works, 3 star. No kettle, but got espresso coffee machine. No safe. Overall: old fashioned; could be much better with a little effort. Superb location and facilities. We reviewed food separately. Good service. Dinner food very average for price. We skipped breakfast based on dinner assessment.

Yelp
Absolutely beautiful castle near the Verdun historical sites. The rooms are very specious clean and well equiped. The staffs is very welcoming. We had ate at the restaurant of the hotel in the evening and the food was good. Nothing spectacular but probably one of the best option of the area. A bit more pricy thatn the other option of the area (about 50€ extra) but really worth it.

Yelp
We already had accommodations out of town in Marre, but trundled up here just to see the place, have cappuccino and a croissant. Yes, the grounds make Downton Abbey look like the gardener's quarters! Stunningly beautiful with a rich WW 1 history as an emergency field hospital. The place is so big and airy that it's almost overwhelming. Bring a large contingent and stay a week to humanize the place. Is there croquet? After you stay here, write and let me know. The drive here from Verdun is quick and ever so beautiful. There just aren't many places like this. Go!

Yelp
We stayed in this gorgeous chateau December 27, 2013 for one night so we could be near Verdun for exploring the WW1 battlefields. The chateau is around 10 minutes away from Verdun and seemed to be the nicest accommodation in the area as compared with the Verdun hotels. The chateau was used during the first world war as a hospital for American soldiers and was occupied by German troops during WW2, if only the walls could talk! Ghost hunters may have a heyday here, but we didn't experience anything paranormal during our stay. However, we had a wonderful and huge room for only 99 EU that overlooked the barn area. The restaurant served fabulous food that included extra tidbits like an amuse bouche of pork rillettes, a wonderful cheese table after dinner and a plate of assorted miniature pastries before desserts arrived. Dinner prices were comparable to any restaurant in France or the United States with prices for main courses averaging 25 EUROS. We used booking.com and feel that we got an exceptional value for the room. If you're interested in WW1 history as my teenage son was, then a trip to Verdun and a stay at this chateau is an ultimate historical experience.
