Loire Valley Road Trip: 3 Days of Castles, Vineyards and MICHELIN Dining

"Leonardo da Vinci’s last home—gifted to him by King Francis I—opens a window onto the master’s world: during his three years here, the Mona Lisa and Virgin of the Rocks hung on its walls, and today an immersive museum projects these and 15 other masterpieces in living color while dreamy Italian gardens invite a wander just as Leonardo loved to do." - Jennifer Ladonne

This 560-mile French Bike Trail Has Châteaus, Charming Houseboats, Surreal Gardens, and Limestone Wine Caves

"Visiting Château du Clos Lucé just outside Amboise felt like stepping into Leonardo da Vinci’s final years: the château has been converted into a museum about his life and work (including some bizarre military designs like a tank shaped like a Hershey’s kiss), and the gardens are shaped to evoke the Tuscan landscape that inspired him, complete with cypress trees and playful homages to his inventions—children even turn handles to spin wavy blades that recall his helicopter precursor." - Joe Baur

7 Castles You MUST See in the Loire Valley (Updated 2025)

"Built by Hugues d’Amboise in the mid-15th century and acquired by Charles VIII in 1490, Clos Lucé retains Renaissance charm in its few rooms and is especially famous because Leonardo da Vinci lived here from 1516 to 1519. The house is a testament to him: the rooms are marvelously restored and the basement is filled with replicas of his inventions, while the exterior shows many Italian influences. The extensive grounds—with geese, streams, ponds, walking trails, a restaurant, and a mill—are stunning and make it easy to imagine Leonardo wandering for inspiration. Admission is 18 EUR; it’s about a 30-minute train from Tours with regular shuttles or a 30-minute walk from the station." - Matthew Kepnes

Such a wonderful museum showing the many genius facets of Leonardo da Vinci. It's amazing to walk right into his bedroom, kitchen or studio! To explore the goblins and admire the kitchen ware, the fine glasses or beer mugs brought from far away. You feel that even the building and the atmosphere is honored and kept alive just through the beautiful flower decorations found in every room. The exhibition is extended into the scenery garden and makes the details in the drawings and paintings more interesting. You need at least two hours to explore the many details! Just look at Leonardo's handwriting. Amazing! Can't recommend it enough.

Great experience! Not as overwhelming as some of the larger chateau in the area and very informative about the art and many inventions of Leonardo Da Vinci. Also great for children.

While a grey and drizzling day, this final home of Leonardo da Vinci is so lovely. Having information in English and French was really helpful. Da Vinci's skill as an artist and engineer were on full display. Being from Canada I am easily wowed by historical homes. But seeing da Vinci's tools just makes him come alive.

Visiting Clos Lucé was an amazing experience. This charming château is famous for being Leonardo da Vinci’s last residence, and walking through the house and gardens really brings his genius to life. The exhibitions of his inventions and the beautiful surrounding park make it both educational and inspiring. A must-see for anyone interested in history, art, and innovation!

Google
Brilliant place to visit to get more insight into the mind of this fabulous man. What a genius! His home is well laid out with samples of his inventions and ideas. Lovely gardens too with bigger versions of his inventions- staggering!

Enjoyed visiting this interesting chateau where Leonardo da Vinci spent the last few years of his life. Touring this chateau gave insight into his lifestyle and how he spent his time with artifacts, models of his inventions, and interactive installations on the grounds. You could easily spend 3 hours or more here, especially if you have an interest in invention or engineering. Though this chateau is not one of the more extravagant or finely furnished, the site and grounds are charming with a lovely view. We thought the visit was well worth the drive and the walk up the hill to get to the entrance. Parking could be challenging on a crowded day. There is a small lot with free parking and a larger lot with paid parking next to it.

Google
This is a very good place to visit to learn about Leonardo de vinchi ( spelt wrong ) it shows all thr things he invented which is a real eye opener, and his love for Gardens and design shows in his own gardens which are really nice.

Yelp
Wonderful self guided tour of the home of Leonardo Da Vinci. The brochures are explanatory and some of the amazing inventions of this genius are displayed. All we need in this world is a living Leonardo Da Vinci! Nice gift shop, refreshments available, friendly staff, nice gardens. It's quite a hike up a hill from the parking area, and the one way streets are very narrow. I do not recommend trying to drive to the top.

Yelp
The chateau where Leonardo da Vinci spent happy & productive last years of his life. Here his memory shines through the chateau & the gardens, from his bedroom, studios, kitchen & an extensive presentation of his art, inventions & writings. In the garden grounds of particular interest is the unique Pigeon House. And nearby, don't miss the restaurant at the old priory, Auberge du Prieure. This restaurant offers a taste of French Renaissance cuisine set in typical interiors of the period & staff in Renaissance costume. It's an ideal way to end the tour.

Yelp
Great chateau/museum with a lot of history. Unfortunately, the upper (main) floor was closed for renovation when we went, so we missed a lot of good stuff. It would have been nice if they'd discounted it for that reason. Still, if you're in Amboise, you might as well go, because what else are you going to do?

Yelp
The inside: way too busy/too many people. The gardens were amazing though, especially the Da Vinci recreations. Hence my 4star review.
