Michigan Has a Growing Wine Scene, Thanks to Climate Change - AFAR

"Founded in the mid-1970s by an entrepreneur who left a metro Detroit business to plant traditional vinifera on southwest-facing slopes, this pioneering estate was once derided as a folly but became the state’s first large-scale vineyard. It now spans about 122 acres, grows a dozen grape varieties, follows sustainable practices like cover crops and winery compost, and produced a riesling that drew high praise from an international critic—helping legitimize the region and inspire many subsequent wineries." - Alexandra Gillespie

Climate Change Presents a Critical Juncture for Midwestern Winemakers | Eater

"A Michigan winery noted in a 2019 Wine Enthusiast roundup: its 2013 riesling was the least expensive among wines that earned 90+ points, retailing at about $13, and is cited as an example of the state’s rising reputation for quality, especially with rieslings." - Paola Rosa-Aquino

We visited this winery yesterday and enjoyed our tasting flights. The server was helpful and friendly. However, when it came time to order the wines we wanted to buy, we were told to get them from the numbered bins and take to the counter to check out. Wr were the only customers in the winery at that time, so it’s not like they were too busy to load our case for us. The wines are good and reasonably priced, but don’t expect to have your wines pulled for you to purchase.

Google
We stopped in for a wine tasting. Excellent experience! We had a knowledgeable woman who walked us through the tasting, then we had a glass of wine on their delightful patio. We bought a few bottles and browsed in their merch shop. Go see them!

Samantha Baldyga

Google
The red wine flight was ok but the pretzel was large and tasty. The live music was a nice touch when siting outside in the heat.

Google
5 Stars is not enough! This was truly a Grand Experience! From the incredible views of the vineyard to drinking wine on beautiful patio, this is a must do excursion that I highly recommend to all. My knowledge of wine making, types of grapes, and the how and why of how each flavor is born gives me a whole new appreciation of enjoying each bottle. My tour was personally given by Gabe Marzonie. After the tour we continued my education with a tasting of the best and most flavorful wine on the beautiful patio! The staff from start to finish were so gracious and inviting that I instantly felt welcome and cared for. Please do not pass up this elevated experience!

Google
We loved our time at Chateau Grand Traverse! We did a private tour and seated tasting with Michael and he was excellent! Very knowledgeable and the experience was exceptional! Definitely book a tour! It’s so unique and you’ll learn so much about this historic winery! The wines were all exceptional! Our favorite was the Late Harvest Riesling. Definitely don’t miss ordering their cheese board during your visit and the German soft pretzel! Their cherry seltzer is also so refreshing to enjoy on their patio! Definitely a must visit in Traverse City!

Google
Such a fun tasting. Kathy was knowledgeable and kind while she helped this “wine ignorant” person figure out what she likes. I got a flight, met friends, listened to live music. Great vibe!!

Google
Very kind and helpful staff. I got the sweet wine flight and it was pretty good - $20. Seating outside was great - most of the seating had shade options, which was great considering I came on a sunny day, 90 some degrees.

Google
Glad to visit this vineyard. I have enjoyed their offerings from the store for years.

Yelp
Beautiful. Great wines and very pleasant staff. I did get the pretzel and it tasted microwaved, however did not go for that, so that does not impact my score. Beautiful property.

Yelp
We enjoyed the wine tasting very much. I was surprised to find that I like their white wines better than their reds. We loved being outdoors and the ambiance was exquisitely Springtime in Northern Michigan. Our hosts for the tasting were perfectly delightful.

Yelp
This place doesn't have the best view but it does when you park at the top on the road and take a picture out to the water. I will say tho the private wine tasting is worth it and amazing. Our server was so accommodating and let us try so many different wines. She really tried to match what our tastes were and made it worth the money. There really wasn't a wine they made I didn't like. Check out the private wine tasting and enjoy it on their back patio.

Yelp
Went there because I am a fan of the late Harvest Riesling and the Semi Dry Riesling. Took my girlfriend there with an intention of sampling wines and buying a few bottles. We got there 30 minutes before close and we're rudely served by the waitress who elected to remind us three times that they were closing in 30 minutes then again in 20 minutes and then a third time in 10 minutes. We understood going in that the closing time with 6:00 p.m. but she made us feel so unwelcomed that I have no interest in ever going back.

Yelp
I visited this winery in January with my husband, my mom, my sister, her husband, and their 2 kids. My sister and her family got a table so the kids could get something to eat, while my husband, mom and I did the wine tasting up at the counter. It looked pretty packed when we got there, but the groups actually moved pretty quickly... which brings me to why it wasn't one of my favorites. The wine itself was good. The bartender was friendly-ish. It just really felt like they wanted to process as many people through as possible. Don't ask too many questions. Don't take your time making your selections. Don't take too much time on your tastings. I'm not sure if they have an actual time limit they try to maintain, but it really took away from the overall experience. I would expect this during peak season, but we were there on a weekend in January. There were a decent number of people there, but not enough that I think rushing us did them any favors. The building was nice. There is a large storefront area when you first walk in, and the space is clean and open. I didn't feel like it was as inviting as some other wineries in the area, but it was nice. We did end up buying a bottle of wine, which was one of our favorites on the tasting list, and I would absolutely drink it again, but I don't think I would participate in another tasting here.

Yelp
This is the very first Winery we ever visited back in the early '80s. We have returned several times over the years and always enjoy ourselves. Chateau Grand Traverse has a beautiful tasting room and a wide selection of wines from light whites to fruit ports. Tastings are five wines for $10 and you keep your glass. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. Do yourself a favor an stop here on your wine trail visit and enjoy the beautiful Old Mission Peninsula and the wine.

D C.

Yelp
Loved this place. Geraldine was as especially helpful and nice - great employee to have at a place like this. Took her time to get to know our palates and suggest other wines and of course we had to buy a few bottles! She even helped us plan the other places we needed to see. The views from here are fantastic. The oldest Vineyard in the area. All grapes are grown here and aged on site. Thumbs up!

Yelp
My husband and I decided it was finally time to try some of the TC wineries now that we live here, and this one came highly recommended! The views were absolutely stunning and the wine tastings were great (I always ask for the driest red wines available). Highly recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
Purchased two bottles. Rosè and late harvest Riesling ! Scrumptious to the point that we ordered an additional glass outside on the patio. Michael was informative and had me trying wines I would not normally explore. Great experience! Smooth process and knowledgeable staff.

Yelp
One of the original wineries in northern Michigan, this place has had many years to perfect their craft, and they have done a great job of producing surprisingly good wines. Compared to the many other options in the region, I found their wines to be one of the best with qualities I would expect in European or better California wines. The ambience is similar to other wineries, although not as "splashy" as some, but wine tasting is about wine, and this place has some of the best ones you'll find within miles.

Yelp
This was our first time here. We have visited several if not all of the vineyards on the peninsula in the past. The service, attitude and overall experience here was definitely below expectations and that if their competitors. This was a busy weekend for all the vineyards with the Largest crowds I have seen. We got turned away at one vineyard due to capacity and lack of reservations! Boo on that Bonobo. Anywho, the wines here were just not to my liking. Our tasting host was mechanical and lacking an Ounce of charisma, which was a bummer. It's a nice facility. Been around for awhile and their wines are featured locally for much less than what you pay at the vineyard. Not a repeat unfortunately.

Yelp
Another gorgeous winery in TC! We enjoyed an awesome guided tour by Hiro, he was very knowledgeable and funny, we had a great conversation. I forgot to take a picture of the menu. My wife and I got a couple dry reds and a couple spicy and fruity ones. Hiro also recommend a port wine; he had us try a piece of chocolate with it as well. It was very good! The sitting area outside was beautiful and the views were as well. It's impossible to have a bad time!

Lenore D.

Yelp
We don't usually comment on bad experiences but feel we need to warn others about what we thought would be a great place to grab some wine and a quick snack. We tried two wines -- one was drinkable, the other tasted like dirt. We had lamented the price for 5 oz pours, the. were mad when we didn't even drink them. We also ordered a flatbread. Thick, school-cafeteria like dough with about a teaspoon of sauce, a few splashes of mozzarella and pieces of basil that were so small and brown you could barely see them (it was a margharita ). The $18 flatbread could not cost more than $2 -- two pieces didn't even have toppings. Employees were not friendly at all. It does allow dogs on the patio but you cannot try wines out there. Don't let the word Chateau fool you. Nothing is further from the truth.

Yelp
My husband says this is the best of all wineries around here, so we made the trek to taste and see. It's a beautiful Saturday in April for a tour or wineries. We didn't have time for a tasting since we have other places to visit and didn't want to be tipsy for the drives to the other peninsula. Bought some charcuterie items for myself and some other wines for my parents, dinner wines and white wines. They had us check-in before entering with names and phone numbers. There's a sheet to check out the wines before going to the tasting counter. Wines are by the taste or by the glasses. Service was chilled and friendly.

Yelp
Very fun winery. Short wait time for walk-ins. With the wine pass, you could get BOGO, wine tasting, which was worth it. Very friendly staff. Tastings included 5 wines. The tastings are done inside. Tried the gerwurztrainer, Pinot noir, merlot, cab franc, and traverse red. Enjoyed the cab franc here compared to some of the other local wineries. She did give us an extra sample and let us try the cherry port, which was not as thick as I thought it would be and actually tasted good, high %alcohol. Also sampled the michmash red, which apparently can be found at meijer she informed us, but we bought some here from the winery!! Fun place, would definitely come back. Pretty views outside.

Yelp
Always such a beautiful place no matter the time of year! Absolutely love the wine tasting knowledge that we heard! Wine is always so good here! Great tasting experience with excellent staff! Thank you! We will be back!

Yelp
Great place for sampling wine and taking in the beautiful countryside with dogs in tow. There was plenty of parking when we stopped by on Friday. Pets are only allowed on one side of the winery patios but the view is perfect on either side. Boxed water is available for purchase. It would be a nice touch if they would offer free water and maybe dog bowls for those visiting with dogs. Wines are good and the service is great.

Yelp
Awesome place to start a wine tour or to simply sit outside and enjoy the view with some great wines! Through the Traverse City wine tours, this was our first stop on our adventures of the day. This was quite the stop to begin at because we were able to start on a high note due to the wine and cheese board that they had to offer here. As you can see by the photos, they have a very nice outdoor area to sit and relax (weather permitting of course). Like many of the wineries in Traverse city, the wines are cycled through every so often so whatever you get during one of your visits, may not be available the next time. On some evenings (at the time when we went) they were doing live music out on the patio area. We definitely want to come back and try that when we're not on a tour schedule. Inside as well, they have a mini gift shop area where you can buy various things and wine. Or, you can simply go straight up to their long two sided bar and order what you'd like. Love their wine, their atmosphere, their food, and...yeah, their wine!

Yelp
Went to check out this winery last weekend. It was not only beautiful, there were some really good wine selections there. A friend in our party didn't care for them, she said they were watered down. I for one am not an expert but I know good wine when I taste it. There were a few that I didn't care for, but there were quite a few that I did like. I even bought a bottle. When you arrive there are two lines: one for tastings and one of you want to grab a glass and sit on the patio. Both were 45 minute long wait times. We chose the tasting. Try 5 wines for $5. That's right $5! I loved the Chardonnay and I am not even a white wine drinker. The description said it had a creamy taste. It indeed did! I enjoyed the cab also.

Alex A.

Yelp
Mediocre setting and food service is not attentive. Wine was fine. Not sure why business feels need to include political signs on property.

Yelp
A wonderful experience! I came here with several friends. We were created at the door and immediately served on the patio. Despite being a hot day, the patio was nice and cool and the bartender was very helpful and friendly. We all got a glass of wine that came with a free wine glass, and a hummus board for the table. The view of the vineyard was breathtaking. 10/10 Will be back when I come to town again!

Kathryn S.

Yelp
Beautiful winery with lots of amazing options. It's a nice place with nice people, definitely will go back.

Hannah B.

Yelp
Kathy was INCREDIBLE! She knew what we needed when we didn't even know what we needed. She very clearly knows the ins and outs of her wines and we hope everyone gets to meet her! Best winery in TC.

Brianna K.

Yelp
Definitely extremely busy, so we opted to get a glass and sit outside. Would have done a tasting if the line wasn't 15+ deep

Judy F.

Yelp
After being a member here for years and being one of their biggest fans, I never would have thought that I would be treated the way I was tonight. They were my favorite winery on Old Mission Peninsula. NOT ANYMORE. I was not told that they were closing soon. I was not told it was last call until I tried to order a glass. I got way less than half a glass and was told that they would take 60% off. They did not! I always thought that Hiro was an awesome person. Apparently he is not. He was rude and lied to us. After I was told this, new customers were given new glasses of wine and treated like nothing was happening. Apparently I am being disrespected and treated unfairly. I don't think I will ever go back. I warn you against thinking this is a good place to go even if it seems great for years, they don't keep treating you well.

Erienne S.

Yelp
The building is beautiful, and so is the amazing view. I have tried many Chateau GT wines from finding them in Meijer, and just had to see it in person. This was the last stop on our wine trail this spring. It was towards close, but before last call still and I felt a little rushed by the staff. My husband and I have a food industry background, and never like to be "those people", so we picked our flight quickly and were still able to ask our questions. The wines we tried were pretty good, but not much different from the ones they already sell in Meijer and other places. It was really cool to see where they come from though.

Yelp
Stayed here for a little anniversary get away and this place did not disappoint! The staff is so friendly and accommodating. I didn't take pictures of our room but we stayed in room 5 "wine in the woods" and our private patio was gorgeous. You Definitely have the feel of woods with the vineyard in the distance. The room was spotless and had everything we needed. The house is very spacious as well and there is everything from an exercise room, sauna, books, and board games for guests to use. We didn't spend much time here as we went to a lot of the wineries but it's a beautiful place if your looking for something quiet away from the hustle and bustle from downtown Traverse. And price is very comparable to staying downtown, except here you get a free bottle of wine each night you stay, free tastings, and a discount on bottles of wine purchased. We loved our stay here. The tasting room is pretty amazing as well, it's spacious and they have a great outdoor space if your just swinging by and want a glass of wine and sit outside to relax. Sitka likes to greet Inn guests but all belly rubs have to be done at the check in desk. Sitka isn't allowed over at the guest house :)
google avatar

Laura K.

Yelp
The wine tasting is very reasonably priced ($10) and you get to keep your glass if you want. The worker pouring our wine was very nice and helpful, but I did not love the wines here. We ordered the Mediterranean board and we're super disappointed in that as well. It was $16 and had 5 small cold Naan (the ones you can buy at Costco), some carrots and celery, a few olives, a few figs, two grape leaves, a small hummus, tzatziki, two peppers, and a few nuts. It was underwhelming and would have been better if the pita was at least warmed. Overall, I was disappointed.
google avatar

Danielle N.

Yelp
Eddie- your manager is flipping me off in this photo. This is a management problem, not a wine bus company problem. Also already told our wine bus company to break ties with this winery. I'm fully aware of COVID regulations, and your business is no different than everyone elses. However, we only had problems at THIS location. So clearly the way you have things set up, doesn't work. So instead of apologizing for Hiro's actions (once again flipping me off in this photo) and the way we were treated, you place the blame on others. Really?
google avatar

Saurabhi P.

Yelp
I went to the mission peninsula with some friends for wine tasting. This was one of the first stops we made. We tasted the wine indoor, its a good activity for a rainy day. There is no seating, you stand at the counter and get your 5 wine tastings. The employees were very friendly and very knowledgeable about their wine. You definitely learn interesting facts about wine especially if you are not a wine junk like me. I had a great experience! Plus you get a wine glass to take home with you. If you have time, walk around back and you'll see the beautiful vineyard and there's a deck with some benches to sit on. Definitely make this a stop in your next wine tasting tour.
google avatar

Shannon M.

Yelp
This is the oldest winery on the peninsula, and my dad actually wrote about it for a trade publication something like 40 years ago (when they were only making fruit wines because the grapes weren't ready yet!) So of course we had to check it out while visiting. We got friendly service at the wine bar and did a tasting of five wines (of your choice). I was pleased by all the riesling options and ended up buying a bottle of the Late Harvest Riesling, but the cherry sangria was also unique! After that we took a half-hour tour with Laura and Kayla, which was excellent! Informative and funny. I definitely recommend this if you're at the winery already. Beautiful setting, and there's also an inn (adults only!) that would be worth remembering for future visits!
google avatar

Harish V.

Yelp
Awesome wine and Amazing Staff makes your visit a great experience. Never a fan of wine but after visiting this place found some wines that I really enjoyed. Signature wine Tasting costs $5 that gives you the option to try 5 different wines but Regular wine tasting is only $3. My Favorite was 2017 etcetera white wine , kinda limited edition which has flavor of honey comb, citrus and hint of spice( unfortunately they don't tell what is the spice). Pros: --------- Awesome Selection of wine Amazing Staff Patio Free parking Free Samples of Dips(Jam) Clean Restroom Not too far from downtown Cons: --------- None Would love to definitely return.

Yelp
J and I visited this winery on a weekend afternoon, so it was a bit busy. We had to wait in line a few minutes before getting up to the long bar. The bartender that helped us was laid back and very friendly. Even though there were a few people waiting, he didn't rush us into gulping our tastings. After trying a few, Jacob and I decided to buy a glass and sit on relaxing patio overlooking their vineyard. When it was time to leave, I wanted to grab a couple bottles of their white wine. It was super-affordable, maybe around $11? Their reds were more, at $15-30. This is was wonderful experience and I'd love to visit Chateau Grand Traverse again.
google avatar

Summer M.

Yelp
Another winery that I would travel long and far for! Incredible prices for tastings, beautiful scenery, knowledgeable staff (that don't just answer your questions, but also tell you about all the cool facts), and amazing wine! My husband and I were most pleasantly surprised by the great prices here (for food and drinks)! Besides that, everything else was top notch. I can't wait to recommend this to all my friends traveling through Michigan. Tip: if you do a wine tasting you get a $3 off coupon for any bottle of wine! The Mich Mash was our favorite.

Bethany S.

Yelp
Brought out kids here (8,6,3) and were able to have a glass of wine on the patio without any issue (came prepared with snacks and games). Staff was friendly.

Yelp
This sweet traverse red was dry not sweet at all false advertising, awful wine waste of nmoney

Yelp
My girlfriend and I visited four wineries on our trip up Old Mission Peninsula: Peninsula Cellars, Chateau Grand Traverse, Brys Estate and Two Lads. Peninsula Cellars was the most laid back. Chateau Grand Traverse had the best variety of wines. Brys Estate was our favorite tasting room and Two Lads had the best view. Chateau Grand Traverse had the largest selection and some of the least expensive wines we saw on the peninsula, which was nice. When you pay for the tastings, you can either do a $3 tasting or a $5 tasting, which gives you access to the "reserves." Don't bother with the $5 tasting. Almost all the reserves are red wines, and none is very good. A nice thing is that they give you a coupon for the amount you spend on the tasting, so if you buy a bottle, you get to apply that $3 or $5 toward the purchase. (One coupon per bottle.) The tasting room here is very pretty with a long bar to accommodate all the tourists. The guy serving us was a little pushy about serving up our next glass in a hurry, but it wasn't too bad. I was disappointed when they gave me a glass of wine that was supposed to be served hot, but it was just room temperature. I didn't like the cherry wine here as much as the one at Peninsula Cellars. We walked away with two bottles of the 40 Grand Etcetera Blend (white).

Olivia G.

Yelp
This was one of the first places post-pandemic that I visited and it was great! The owner and tasting staff interacted with us a lot. The view of the water from the viewing spot is incredible-- I could've sat there all day. The wine is fantastic and the tasting experience is great- even with plexiglass at the bar and we even got to take our glasses home. I loved a lot of their wines and bought some to take home. I can't wait to buy their wines at home and return back to the winery.
google avatar

Leah S.

Yelp
I had a great time. The pinot grigio is definitely my favorite. I wish you were able to make reservations instead of waiting in line due to COVID but it's okay. Walking down the road through the vineyard was an amazing view. I also like that we were able to take our wine glass home. The prices weren't bad either

Cameron C.

Yelp
This is a beautiful winery. I couldn't decide if the views or the wine were better. This is a family friendly place.

Julie W.

Yelp
Jackson was lovely and knew his product. I think the tasting area is a little awkward, but that can be remedied.
google avatar

Nadia M.

Yelp
Great wines, views, atmosphere, and most importantly... great staff. One week I went and didn't do a tasting and they were patient answering my questions to pick a nice glass of wine to enjoy. A week later I did do a tasting and the gentleman got to know what I liked and went from there, and I ended up leaving with some bottles! I really enjoy their cherry wines, and it was nice to try some new ones there.
google avatar

White C.

Yelp
We stopped in for a tasting. This was during Rona panic, and we weren't allowed outside, but there does seem to be a great view out where you can have a single glass. For 5 bucks per person -- which includes a glass to take home -- obviously this should be on your list of wineries to visit. The view from out back is, again, great. Don't forget to stop at the overlook just as you leave the parking lot and turn south. Nice view of both bays. Probably a good sunset spot, although the winery patio might be better. The wines were more interesting than Bonobo's, but less interesting then Chateau Chantal's. Not much to say. Very limited experience here, but would definitely come by again.

Yelp
'Ello chaps! The Traverse City area is a hidden gem for wine lovers. Most people think of Napa Valley for the best of the best, but boy are they missing out. There are dozens of wineries in the Traverse City area, each offering their own signature wines, grown in the local vineyards. Chateau Grand Traverse Winery is a member of WOMP (Wineries of Old Mission Peninsula); a trail of 9 wineries, each with their own character. Chateau Grand TW is a large modern tasting room and vineyard with a variety of wines available for testing. They charge $3 to sample five "signature" wines, but you get a $3 discount on the purchase of full bottles. You can also get to sample five "reserve" wines for $5. It's also Northern Michigan's oldest winery, open since 1974. They have incredible views of the vineyard from several locations, including their outdoor patio area. You can get some snacks, some wine, and enjoy an afternoon with friends. They also have a large gift shop with a variety of wine and Michigan souvenirs, as well as an onsite Inn where you can enjoy a romantic getaway.
google avatar

Diana M.

Yelp
Very chill patio space! We ordered wine at the outdoor bar and then sat at one of the many umbrella covered tables. Very relaxing, and they had a nice little snack mix to go alongside the wines. Would return!
google avatar

Kristina S.

Yelp
Beautiful view from the balcony and the wine is great! Only downside is the wait time - u must make a reservation to get in
google avatar

Catherine B.

Yelp
Surprised my husband for weekend birthday getaway. Very disappointed the rooms were very hot did not have own thermostat no one was on staff they left at noon then you were on your own. Didn't even know who was an employee or guest. Breakfast was a joke no coffee in breakfast room no cereals no milk just frozen jimmy dean sandwiches. Not good if you have gluten allergy. Website stated chef on weekends for breakfast only again no one to be found. We had to sleep with sliders open to get air in rooms. Nicer wineries to stay at next time. Sent them an email and received no reply very upsetting and would not recommend this place at all

Yelp
Excellent Service and Covid safety procedures. Great Wine!!

Yelp
Very friendly staff .... very helpful in the tasting room... Definitely worth a visit! They had a cute little gift shop and we got there in the nick of time because they got pretty busy around 1 o'clock on a week day!
