7 Cities and Towns for Discovering the Real South of France

"Between Aix en Provence and the Luberon National Park, Chateau La Coste is a star-studded collaboration. Pritzker-Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel designed the state-of-the-art winery. Celebrated cook-by-fire proselytizer Francis Mallman opened a restaurant there in 2017. Chef Hélène Darroze has one, too. Throughout the estate, you’ll find pieces from artists like Louise Bourgeois and Alexander Calder."

We spent the afternoon exploring the grounds and art and then enjoyed a meal and wine at the Terrace. What a special experience!! Give yourself time to really explore, the staff said 2-2.5 hours of walk and they were not wrong. Wear comfortable shoes! The art is extremely well curated and engaging. We ate the Terrace afterwards and had a wonderful time! Live music, delicious, food and refreshing wine!

Google
Great visit to Chateau La Coste. Outside walking path of 2-3 hours with grandiose art installations and stunning views. It can get a bit steep but otherwise a comfortable hike. Enjoyed a small lunch on their terrace and a small visit to their wine shop. Highly recommend a visit!

Google
Auberge at La Coste- rooms are beautiful but small. We had the cheaper rooms upstairs. Still a lovely stay! The wine tasting….. well…. It was fine. Large group. Red wines were served cold. Rushed tasting. But still very interesting to see the full operation. The grounds are amazing- all the art installations. This is a great place for a large party, wedding, or family get together. We very much enjoyed our time. Plenty of smaller vineyards around for a more intimate wine tasting experience. I would come back here for sure.

We felt somewhat out of place as we arrived in the drive into this posh wine estate. But the staff were so welcoming & friendly. We spent a fine, relaxing 3 hours, walking around with our dog, viewing the sculptures, art, architecture. If you are in the area then pick a day that is not too hot & explore.

Google
Excellent winery with great food. They have 6 restaurants. We tried Italien. Pepperoni pizza was very nice. Eggplant was good too. Seasonal watermelon sorbet was the best part. Their own Rose wine also quite nice with lunch. We also got tickets to see the grounds and art exhibits. Landscape was beautiful and serene.

Google
Excellent experience from start to finish. We did the wine tour and tasting, which was an impressive look at their operation. The wine was great and the terrace restaurant we tried was fresh and had great service. Will be back!

We had an amazing time at the wine workshop at Château La Coste. Patricia, our guide, was knowledgeable, warm, and made everything easy to understand—explaining in English while showing the presentation in French and even teaching us a few key terms. The tasting was eye-opening (we had no idea how much appearance affects aroma and taste!), and the behind-the-scenes tour of the winemaking process was fascinating. We ended up buying 15 bottles—it’s that good! The setting is stunning, with art and architecture all around. Highly recommend for anyone wanting a memorable, cultural, and delicious day.

A day trip to the best 200 acres land with 46 outdoor installations. We booked a private tour and our guide Alexandra was the best, super informed! Then we had lunch at the Italien place, make sure to order the spinach Beignets!

Yelp
Amazing adventure... the food at their Terrace restaurant was great. We spent 5 hours relaxing, drinking wine, walking the grounds, and enjoying the art. I will definitely be back. Next time I will make sure I have reservations at their Francis Mellmann restaurant.

Yelp
Saw this winery on food & wine on instagram and bookmarked in case I ever went back to aix. Low and behold here I am again this time for a wedding. Only 20 minute drive from city center Aix through windy roads of lush green hills and trees. So beautiful thru the driveway and into underground parking. They have a high end restaurant or an out door cafe which is nice after tasting wines or wandering thru the vineyard to see the many sculptures. (There is a fee to view the sculptures) Highly recommend a visit!

Yelp
A classy and sprawling vineyard in the south of France, just north of Aix. The tasting room was air-conditioned and a majority of staff spoke both French and English with ease. We tasted two whites, a rosé, and three reds. Lunch on the terrace was enjoyable. The cheese plate was around 15 euros, as was the tomato salad. They had an insane variety of bread that just kept coming--fig bread, pineapple and coconut bread, olive bread, sourdough, whole wheat. Highly recommend as a quick side trip from Aix.

Yelp
Truly lovely setting. There is wine from the winery here. Food is delicious. You can also do a wine tasting while there. Beautiful property.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our visit here. Allow several hours to tour the grounds and all the distinctive sculptures. Even if you're not an art maven, these works are extremely enjoyable. When done, pop into the store, sample some wine, and take home a bottle for dinner. Salut!

Yelp
Wonderful vineyard and facilities about 20 minutes outside of Aix. The wine tasting includes a tour of the operations - organic farming, mostly stainless and gravity feed as much as possible. Domaine La Coste is creating some outstanding, high-value wines and are especially known for their rosés. The tasting portion of the day was great fun with good pours, lots of explanation and an engaging staff. Plus - and this is huge - a wonderful full service restaurant with really solid dishes. I had the Jambon et Melon and tried the Chicken Caesar Salad. What a great combination - fun wine tasting followed by a nice late afternoon meal. Highly recommend.

Yelp
The scenery was great and so was the food. My family ordered the cheese plate and it came with three cheeses. It was good but not very filling. After the cheese plate I ended up ordering a drink at the cafe and hit the spot. We did the art walk and it was beautiful. I recommend coming here and I will definitely be returning soon.

Yelp
You have to see this place before you die. Read the descriptions of Chateau La Coste on any website. But know that it's impossible to fully appreciate what's going on here without coming here. A two hour walk through a wooded, hilly vineyard, with dozens of modern outdoor sculptures, it's like nothing we've ever seen before. Note: not all the art is superb but quite a few pieces really are quite good. It's the experience of this place that makes it worth the trip. Restaurant: pretty extraordinary. Tomato/mozzarella salad was outstanding. As was the house wine! My steak was perfect and they make the best scalloped potatoes EVER. Also even shared the recipe. Note: watch out for the orange cat (Caramel) who will attempt to steal your steak!

Yelp
Our first winery visit while living in Provence, and it was a good one. Having come from the wine country of northern California, I'm never quite sure what to expect when it comes to a wine-tasting excursion. La Coste was recommended by friends here in Aix who had fallen for the rosé when dining in Marsellle. Indeed, the rosé is unusual, beginning with the color which might fool you into thinking it's a blushing white wine. Not nearly as sticky sweet as the typical rosé, and thus, we bought several bottles to take along. The tasting room is modern and the staff was helpful and pleasant. I suspect we'll be back to restock before the end of the year! (Was hoping the reds would knock our socks off, but not quite. BUT... the red by the box is an excellent table wine, very reasonably priced.) There is also an outdoor art exhibit, but it costs extra to include that in your tour. Would be a lovely outing with a picnic if the weather was in your favor. Put the place on your tour list. I think it's worth it!
