Wine-Fueled Ponzi Scheme at the Center of Manhattan DA Investigation | Eater

"A prestigious Bordeaux wine estate and its owner, Philippe Rothschild, were invoked in allegations that an email was forged to create the appearance of an endorsement or formal tie to a high-end events business. Prosecutors and civil plaintiffs say the purported correspondence was used to convince investors to fund lavish, unprofitable ventures, effectively exploiting the estate's reputation to lend credibility to the scheme." - Jaya Saxena

Best Bordeaux Wineries to Visit

"You can visit all five of the august First Growths if you can wrangle an appointment, but Mouton is unquestionably the most welcoming — you can book online — and the one most set up to entertain casual visitors. You feel how special this place is the minute you lay eyes on it: manicured vine rows, sculpted hedges; even the pathway gravel is perfectly raked. Inside, in addition to the range of stellar wines, you can visit the lovely Museum of Wine in Art, a former barrel cellar chockfull of treasures, from medieval tapestries to Chinese porcelain, and the room displaying the originals of the famous label paintings. chateau-mouton-rothschild.com" - Food & Wine Editors

Incredibile winery with some amazing artwork from original artist of the labels. The wines is another complete review... The place is just amazing how they can produce the quantity at those level of quality even in not so good vintages.

Absolutely Fabulous. Not only one of the finest winery's in France, but in the world. Simply first class. From the wine to the Château to the guide everything was flawless. Amazing history and art in a meticulously clean and pristine environment. Reservations are required and book well in advance. Truly a must for any wine enthusiast.

The tour plus wine tasting is truly a unique experience. The tour lasted about two hours and included the grounds, cellars, wine museum and label gallery. While it did feel a bit long, it was worth the visit. The wine is fantastic. The only downside to the tasting is that you only get to try one Chateau Mouton Rothschild wine - the other two wines are from their partner vineyards nearby in Pauillac.

Great tour. Great wine. Great Rothschild family. 2018 - the vintage of the decade for Mouton Rothschild. ● Chateau Mouton-Rothschilde 2014, Pauillac. Tasting in the Chateau on the 17th of June, 2015. Wine maker: Philippe Dhalluin 81% Cabernet Sauvignon 16% Merlot 3% Cabernet Franc 100% new French oak 13% alc. Black berries and ripe cherries on the nose with a touch of green tobacco. The palate is medium with soft ripe tannin. At the start creme the cassis dominates with damson and mullberry in the background. After a few seconds a battle of flavours, freshness and tannin take place. It's like a chemical reaction going off, that suddenly stops, leaving a smooth finish of blackcurrants and raspberrys and white pepper. A very good year like 2010 but with more tannin. Drink approximately from 2022. Bordeaux Index score: 95 - 97. En Primeur Case size Guide Price (per case) Price 6×75 cl £1, 050 - £1, 425 £1, 300 For me, the 2018 Château Mouton Rothschild is the best wine of theirs that I have ever drunk!!! Amazing chateaux and loving the building that makes the wine, inspired by theatre. Grand interior. Absolutely worth a visit and the museum to see the evolution of the bottle labels is the highlight.

It’s a pity that I didn’t get entered into the château. However, I was really impressed with the wonderful yard.

Google
One of the most charming Chateaux of the region, Mouton-Rothschild not only give you a great lesson about Bordeaux wine making but also about art: the labels designed by the most renowned artists of the 20th and 21st century can be seen with the detailed descriptions of how they were conceived, are all available to be seen, together with the private collection of art of the owners. As for the wines, enough has been said.

Yelp
Mouton Rothschild is one of the few grand cru estates with a specially designated visitors center and an appointment tasting begins with a video narrated by Baroness Philippine. The chateau's heritage begins around 1850, when Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild settled in Paris and in 1853, he purchased Ch.Brane Mouton in order to serve his friends his own wine. The estate was renamed "Château Mouton Rothschild". In 1922, the Baron's grandson, Philippe de Rothschild took control of the estate and it was his lifelong passion to elevate Ch.Mouton Rothschild from a second growth to a first growth vineyard. As part of his effort, the Baron started the practice of estate bottling (Mise en bouteille au Château). Eventually, estate bottling became a quality standard and is now required that all first growth wines to be made from grapes grown & bottled on the property of the winery. In 1973, the Baron's efforts were realized and Ch.Mouton Rothschild joined the ranks of Premier Grand Cru. Baron Philippe died in 1988 at the age of 86 to be succeeded by his daughter Baroness Philippine. Since then, Baroness Philippine has worked closely with the executive directors to maintain, modernise and develop the family business. Ch. Mouton employs traditional French vinification techniques: fermentation is 3 weeks in oak vats, ageing is 18 to 24 months in new French oak barrels and fining is with egg whites. The guided group tour includes the French oak vat room, the chai, the private 60,000 bottle cellar, as well as a special tour of the Rothschild family's private museum (no photos allowed). The Rothschilds have a passion for art and their private collection includes Greco-Roman artifacts, as well as a concentration of 17th and 18th century fine art and antiquities. Notably, there is a golden ram that served as the model for the Ch.Mouton 2000 bottle engraving, as well as the figural statues that served as the models for the Ch.Clerc Milon and Ch.d'Armailhac labels. Our tour concluded with a generous barrel tasting of Ch.d'Armailhac, Ch.Clerk Milon and Ch.Mouton. There are no direct sales at the estate; however, a few souvenirs are sold at the visitors center (eg, posters, shirts, coffee table books).

Yelp
Ch. Mouton Rothschild is not truly a First Growth. While it may have been the star of a vintage or two in the past century, it cannot really compete with the heavyweights such as Lafite or Margaux. In comparison to the greats, Mouton uses higher yields per acre, younger vines and stronger marketing to make up for the quality lost. Many prefer its less expensive and more reliable neighbour winery Duhart Millon. Mouton is open to public visitors by appointment. The chateau is a rarity in that it does not have caved cellars. Its cellars (strangely for Bordeaux) are above ground. So the first thing you'll notice is that it looks like a warehouse. The chateau conduct reasonably interesting tasting tours of the property. Try to avoid the video presentation unless you are a complete novice - it will ruin your day with useless brainwashing.
