A Four-Day Culinary Journey Through Bordeaux, According to The MICHELIN Guide

"On the Left Bank, this winery blends tradition and innovation through low-intervention methods—biodynamic farming, hand-harvesting, and gravity-fed winemaking—and even offers on-site luxury accommodation and a state-of-the-art spa specializing in vinotherapy with Caudalie, making it a compelling place to taste and unwind." - The MICHELIN Guide

Three Keys in Bordeaux: The Hot Spring Hotel in Wine Country

"Château Smith Haut Lafitte is a winery dating back to the 14th century, with an exclusive Grand Cru Classé distinction. It is owned by the same family that owns Les Sources de Caudalie, and it produces some of the world's finest wines. The winery is located across the road from the hotel." - The MICHELIN Guide

Best Bordeaux Wineries to Visit

"A Grand Cru Classé located within the Pessac-Léognan appellation, known for both its red and white wines. The estate has a reputation for innovation and sustainability in viticulture. Visit for the wine but stay for the art installations and beautiful grounds. smith-haut-lafitte.com" - Food & Wine Editors

Great experience in visiting here! The host is super friendless. He told us many stories about the chateau and brought is to their secret basement! This is one of the best chateau in bordeaux that you can't miss! We will come back to enjoy their hotel next time. 😀

A warm welcome from Ange, Noemi and Juliette. I tasted two delicious white wines and enjoyed walking around the beautiful estate. Sculptures all around, great for lovers of art and architecture 🥂

My wife and I did a tour and tasting with Marie and we had the best time! We are huge wine enthusiasts and we have been wine tasting around the world, but this was one of our favorite tastings of all time! The vineyard is beautiful and the grounds are spectacular. Marie was lovely and she had impressive knowledge about the wine and history. Our tour ended with a tasting where we also got to meet the vineyard owner and tour his private cellar. Finally, the wine is beautiful. We bought a case but will also search it out when we return to the U.S.

The tour was beautiful, discrete and with an interesting history. The two red tastings were fantastic with the second extremely high-end and incredible. But no whites offered in the tasting, oddly. And children are not offered juice even though it was mentioned when booking.

Review: Château Smith Haut Lafitte – 2 out of 5 Stars 1 star for the stunning estate, 1 star for the guide — and that’s where the positives end. On my third day in Bordeaux, I was staying at Les Sources de Caudalie, just a short walk from Château Smith Haut Lafitte. Given the beautiful setting, I was excited to visit the estate for a wine tasting. The property is stunning — a true visual delight. But from the moment I arrived, the hospitality fell surprisingly short. The front desk staff were cold and unwelcoming. When we arrived on time for our reservation, we were told abruptly to wait “until my colleague comes,” with no warmth or explanation. I honestly thought I had misunderstood something, but my friend confirmed she felt the same discomfort. After waiting 15 minutes, I went back to ask if we had been forgotten. The response, again, was indifferent. Our guide finally arrived — friendly and professional — and immediately brought a sense of ease to the experience. Unfortunately, before we could even begin, one of the front desk staff interrupted with a blunt “First, you pay,” which felt jarring and ungracious. We had booked The Masterclass Workshop but misunderstood the pricing — €810 per group of 12, not per person. Since there were only two of us, we would have had to cover the full amount. Thankfully, our guide helped us change to the A Taste of Paradise package (€209), more suitable for a small group. Still, the cost felt high compared to other wine tastings in the region. Even after that, the reception team’s attitude remained cold, making us feel unwelcome in a place that should feel special. I appreciated the professionalism and kindness of our guide — she took us to the tower for a vineyard view, shared the château’s fascinating history, and led us through the cellars with enthusiasm. We tasted three wines: • Les Hauts de Smith 2020 • Château Smith Haut Lafitte Grand Cru Classé 2018 • Château Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc 2022 The wines were lovely — though the tasting pours were extremely small. Not that I expected large servings, but having done multiple tastings in Bordeaux by this point, this was noticeably minimal. That, combined with the earlier friction, made it hard to fully enjoy the experience. And for anyone wondering — if you look at my other reviews, including my stay at Les Sources de Caudalie and my dinner at La Grand’Vigne, you’ll see I’m not one to criticize lightly. This review comes solely from the experience I had — no bias, just honest disappointment. If the hospitality had matched the beauty of the place, this could have been a highlight. Sadly, it wasn’t.

Wow, this winery is absolutely stunning! Our hosts, Noemie and Angel (sorry for the spelling mix-up), were super knowledgeable about the place and the wine, and we ended up staying even after closing because we wanted to chat about past vintages and experiences. If we ever come back, we’d love to stay on the property—it was all so beautiful and just made for a perfect day.

Must visit if you’re a wine lover. No booking needed. The chateau is beautifully manicured and a great place to be. You can do tastings at the cellar door or can have wine and some finger foods at the restaurant beside the hotel. What a lovely experience and amazing wine my highlight of the trip. We were so lucky and got a chance to meet Florence Cathiard who was with Daniel at the time but we missed photo with him: lovely experience and totally recommend comming here if you have half a day in Bordeaux.

Yelp
Positives: Very good wine and a beautiful place. Negatives: expensive tasting relative to surrounding wineries. Staff also was not helpful.
