Château St. Gerlach is a grand historic estate set amid serene parklands on the edge of the Ingendael Nature Reserve, just moments from the charming town of Valkenburg in the Netherlands. This five‑star superior hotel, part of the Relais & Châteaux collection, is privately owned by the Oostwegel family and offers refined luxury with a warm, personal touch. The hotel features 59 accommodations, including rooms, suites, and residences spread across the château, the manor farmstead, and several outbuildings. During my stay, I was assigned a Junior Suite in one of the tower annexes in front of the main building, accessible directly from outside and offering about 40 square metres of space. The suite includes a king‑size bed, wardrobe, flat‑screen TV, a small seating area, and a large desk, along with a Nespresso machine, tea‑making facilities, and a minibar. Housekeeping is provided daily; while there is no turndown service, complimentary water is replenished each day, and a box of sweet treats awaited me on arrival. The bathroom features a double vanity, rain shower, integrated toilet, and heated towel rail, stocked with toiletries by Sothys, the French skincare brand. Breakfast is served in a dedicated area and includes a small but high‑quality buffet of cold dishes and juices, complemented by an extensive range of freshly prepared à‑la‑carte options, all delivered with consistently friendly service. The estate offers two dining venues—the fine‑dining restaurant Les Salons and the more casual Burgemeester Quicx—plus a bar inside the hotel. Les Salons, located in the historic château, offers modern French cuisine inspired by regional Limburg ingredients. The beautifully designed restaurant impressed me with a tasting menu where every dish showed finesse and remarkable flavour. Service and wine selection were outstanding, exactly as expected from a Relais & Châteaux property. Burgemeester Quicx, near the estate’s entrance and conference centre, serves hearty regional dishes and comforting classics, all excellently prepared with warm, professional service. The Lobby Bar, with its intimate château‑style charm, is ideal for a drink before or after dinner. The estate’s pool is located in the former stables, offering a generous swimming area and plenty of loungers. A small sauna and steam room are also available, though the spa facilities are in a separate building, requiring a short walk outside in any weather. There is no gym on the estate. The historic chapel, built in 1664 by the De Villers family, adds a strong sense of heritage and is linked to the nearby grave of St. Gerlach, a 12th‑century hermit whose burial site became a place of pilgrimage and shaped the estate’s early monastic history. The beautifully landscaped gardens, dotted with classical and contemporary artworks, invite guests to wander and enjoy the harmonious blend of nature and art. Château St. Gerlach offers a balanced experience of heritage, comfort, and refined hospitality, with its well‑maintained estate, excellent dining, and warm service, and can be genuinely recommended for a relaxing and memorable stay.
