This is the World’s Best Exhibition Worth Travelling For in 2026, According to Time Out

Located at the University of Sydney, this museum is part of the 25th Biennale of Sydney’s city-wide programme, joining four other venues in presenting a host of impressive, moving and thought-provoking art. Exhibitions here in 2026 will be tied to the biennale’s theme of ‘rememory’, which invites engagement with forgotten or marginalised histories, and entry will be free as part of the biennale from March 14 to June 14. - Liv Kelly

The Most Underrated Museum in 11 of the World’s Biggest and Best Cities, According to Time Out Editors

Hidden in the grounds of the University of Sydney, this treasure trove of a museum hasn’t been around all that long – it opened in late 2020 – but it has been generations in the making. The curation is more poetic than analytical, bringing together diverse artefacts from archives of art, historic antiquities and scientific specimens to offer visitors a fresh perspective and to challenge colonial narratives. - Grace Beard

A very impressive university museum—the building resembles a floating box on a site that once housed tennis courts. Inside, visitors can explore a wide range of artworks, artifacts, and antique items. This museum surpasses some city museums in quality, and I highly recommend a visit.

I was pleasantly surprised by the range and number of exhibits having had no expectations. I didn't know this museum existed as a friend suggested it. There are also modern art spaces mainly on the upper levels. The cafe also has great food. We spent about 3 hours there overall. For a free venue it was worth it.

Beautifully displayed artifacts, world class, can't wait to return and continue browsing this collection, an hour was not enough time. I enjoyed this museum more than the powerhouse and the Canberra museum. Easy to get to on public transport. Highly recommend.

The university museum is international, encyclopedic and diverse in its scope of time, space, and culture, as richly and beautifully shown in the display. It is beyond my expectation. I learnt so much. Nice coffee shop and stunning view into the Sydney University campus, too.

I visited Chau Chak Wing Museum and really enjoyed it! The museum has a mix of history, art, and ancient artifacts. The design is modern, and everything is well-organized. My favorite part was the ancient Egypt section, where I saw real mummies and old artifacts. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander exhibits were also very interesting. There were many interactive displays that made learning fun. The museum is free to enter, which is great. It’s a nice place to explore, especially if you like history and culture. I would definitely visit again!

We came to see the mummies. There is a small but nice exhibition, including a few sarcophagi and even mummified cats and crocodiles. There are a few other interesting exhibitions, but overall, if you have to travel a long distance, the museum is not worth visiting. Sydney's museums (apart from the Australian Museum) tend to have impressive buildings but often quite boring or small exhibitions.

I recently visited the Chau Chak Wing Museum and was thoroughly impressed! Located at the University of Sydney, this museum is a hidden gem that offers an incredible mix of history, art, and culture. The museum houses a diverse collection ranging from ancient Egyptian artifacts, classical antiquities, and Indigenous Australian art to contemporary art and scientific objects. The displays are thoughtfully curated, making it easy to navigate and learn about different themes and periods. One of the highlights for me was the Nicholson Collection, which features fascinating archaeological artifacts, and the Macleay Collection, which offers a unique glimpse into the natural history of Australia and beyond. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions that are fresh and engaging, catering to a wide variety of interests. The building itself is a masterpiece of modern architecture, with spacious galleries and plenty of natural light that enhances the viewing experience. Admission is completely free, making it an accessible destination for anyone looking to explore art and history without breaking the bank. The staff were incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable, always ready to answer questions or provide additional insights about the exhibits. Whether you’re a history buff, an art enthusiast, or simply someone looking for an educational and inspiring outing, this museum is a must-visit. I’ll definitely be coming back to see future exhibitions!
