This Scenic Road Trip Along Maine’s Coast Is Packed With Lobster Shacks and Boutique Hotels

"A seasonal, long-running dockside seafood pier on the river just past Kittery Point where locals arrive by boat or car to sit at picnic tables on the dock; the simple, classic menu focuses on steamed lobsters, clam chowder, and crab rolls, and the BYOB policy makes it easy to pair a meal with one of the region’s craft beers." - Jacqueline Dole Jacqueline Dole Jacqueline Dole is a food and travel journalist based in Maine. I wanna start off with the number of things that I did enjoy about the Chauncey Creek Lobster Pier first, I thought that the set up was very cute and despite there only being a small parking lot there is plenty of space along the road and no one minds if you are there. They also had both covered and uncovered seating which was nice because we went on a warmer day. Also, they have a cute view of the water and plenty of tables to enjoy it by. Furthermore, I enjoyed the fact that they had a smaller menu it was easy to navigate, and the food came out quickly, and the staff was very friendly. Highlights of our meal were the bread bowl, corn, and blueberry pie. The bread tasted super fresh and was a great size for two people it also didn’t fall apart at all. They also give you a nice size piece of corn that was juicy. But in my opinion the real star was dessert, the pie crust was super good not dry at all even eaten cold this pie is awesome! I really wanted to enjoy the lobster roll but it wasn’t quite my taste, while I didn’t think that there was too much mayo I did find the bun to get a little moist because it’s not served with lettuce. In addition, the mayo seemed to be seasoned with MAYBE like celery seed seasoning which it gave it an overpowering taste making the lobster roll in my opinion too sweet. I also would’ve enjoyed having a few mor pieced of the tail or knuckles a lot of my roll was end pieces of claws which left the meat losing its texture and the meat to be less flavorful. Furthermore, very little was done with the bun. I do think that they give you a good portion and I enjoyed that it came with not only pickles but chips. Overall, I think that this place is in a great location, has great staff and a super cute setting if you are in the area and would still consider a stop in however, I’d recommend maybe optioning for a full lobster and the chowder unless you like sweeter cold lobster rolls.

Only giving 3 stars for the food because of the lobster roll(s) which was 75% if the cost of our food. I’ve come here many times as a child but we just picked up lobsters to cook. As a kid I don’t remember noticing much of what we as adults notice or pick up on so this is just based on a recent visit as an adult. I will start by saying they serve warm dry meat chopped lobster on a hamburger roll not an hotdog or brioche long roll an hamburger roll……and miracle whip is put on one side of the bun only. We asked for mayo but apparently here that means miracle whip. We were taking it to go (3hours drive away) then found this out once home or we would have addressed it there. The packaging they gave us was a zip loc bag with the sandwiches and chips all inside so chips were all soggy when we got home. We got chowder and ate it there which was pretty good and their onion rings were good. Their staff is wonderful. You order/pay ant the window and tell them your table number and they bring the food as it’s ready. Had we eaten there we would have had the appetizers way after the meal. Our onion rings came out 20 minutes after the soup and lobster rolls. I cannot say enough about this part……..there is almost zero parking, 10-15 car max in the tiny lot. We drove around the block 5 times before finding street parking and if we didn’t drive 3 hours to come here we would have just left. You run the risk of parking (street parking) pretty far on a busy day and a busy road the only place to park you have to cross the street. So if you have a hard time with distances you might want to get dropped off. There are no sidewalks or places to push a wheelchair or walk with assisted aides. The other thing is there is a series of ramps one very steep that you have to go down/up to reach the restaurant as it’s literally overhanging Chauncey creek. Bring cash if you want to get drinks because they come out of a machine and they are $3 each or bring your own as we did. If you are a dill pickle person ask them for side order of pickles. Idk what kind they use but they are really good. They have seating out of the sun in sort of shade under this open airy deck but an easy 85 degree day there was a breeze and we had wished we had a seat in the sun. They have tons of seating and the line is always long but goes fast. They do have an outdoor wash station. They have the lobster shack so you can pick out live lobsters from. We did see a lot of people with backpacks shaped like coolers to bring home their lobsters too. They also have restrooms. One note we wanted to mention was whole place was kept very clean, no trash anywhere and unoccupied tables were all clean and ready the second someone left.

We had the clam chowder in a bread bowl. Wow. Definitely get that. 10/10 We splurged on 3 fresh lobsters and and fries. Worth every last penny we spent. The waiters were all extremely friendly and explained the method of cooking which is very interesting to us as we love cooking too. And coming over a few times to get things out of the way and make sure that everything is good. Also the children loved watching the boats leave dockside... Just such a great place to spend your time... Thanks for a wonderful time!!!!

I love it here! 🦞 we showed up late on a Friday night back in June. The staff were amazing. They let us hang out while they shut things down and didn’t make us feel rushed. Everyone that came to our table took a minute to make some small talk. They made us feel at home. The food is always amazing and priced fairly. And I must add, Chauncey’s has the best view of any urinal in Maine!

Location is beautiful, absolutely beautiful. Secluded and calm, relatively quiet crowd enjoying food at the large amount of picnic tables along the river. BYOB is a cute option that I haven't seen for a while and speaks to the easy going attitude of everyone dining as well as those working there. They sure were friendly folk all around. The food is on the pricey side for what you can get anywhere in Maine. Live lobster, for example, was at least twice the price of almost anywhere else in the immediate area. However, there is one immediately noticeable difference with their lobsters; they were lively and aggressive in their holding tanks - unlike most of the "dormant" live lobsters I've seen at any of the other markets. I didn't order much as this was just a short pitstop. Oysters were not anything to write about. Lobster roll came in a hamburger bun with a side of crisps. While the portions were small, I really enjoyed what I received. Unlike some of the other reviews here, the lobster was fresh, cooked just right, and balanced in flavor. While I don't recommend visiting just for the food alone, the ambiance alone is enough for me to patronize this establishment whenever I'm in the area.

Great atmosphere and super great service!! This was my first time trying a cold lobster roll. I think if you like cold lobster rolls you would really enjoy it.

Yelp
Looking for a place to enjoy lobster on a patio? Well, then look no further than Chauncey's. The plethora of colorful picnic tables offers a place to enjoy your meal. Some are shaded and some are in the sun. The calm water the pier rests on makes for a relaxing and peaceful dining experience. You can pick out a lobster to take home or purchase a meal to enjoy here. You can also bring your own booze to enjoy with your meal. The lobster rolls come on a hamburger bun. Sides are also a must. The beans are really good. But the onion rings were my favorite. I think they were some of the best onion rings I've had. You might want to get here early because the parking is very limited near the lobster pier. If you don't mind walking, there is additional street parking nearby.

Yelp
Chauncey Creek is a must-try for anyone in the Kittery area. The restaurant gives top tier New England vibes. The restaurant itself is perched on buoys on a slow river (don't worry, you can't feel it rocking once you're on the pier) and you can actually drive your boat up to the restaurant and dock it! The menu is about 90% seafood. We ordered the muscles, fried shrimp, oysters, and shrimp cocktail. Everything was very fresh and arrived very quickly. It was so fun to relax on the pier and eat our seafood as boats cruised by.

Yelp
Maine Lobster, heck yeah! There is no shortage of lobster houses in Maine. What sets Chauncey Creek apart from the others is the beautiful dock on Chauncey Creek (actually an inlet). And...their BYOB policy means you can bring a nice bottle of Chardonnay to pair with your lobster (which was exactly what we did). The menu is standard lobster house - whole lobster, lobster rolls, clam chowder, etc. I ordered at the counter and paid. The clerk was friendly, helpful and efficient. We had a picnic table by the water. The place wasn't crowded for late lunch. Some guest brought table cloths and flowers for their tables. Classic rock played over speakers. The Clam Chowder came out quickly as I sipped my wine. The chowder was thick with lots of large chunks of clam. The soup was absolutely delicious. I had a Lobster Roll, which was served on a soft hamburger-style bun. The lobster was tender, fresh and perfectly cooked. The sandwich was served with chips that were too salty for me. My cousin had a tuna roll, which was packed with creamy tuna. As we sat on the dock, a fisherman delivered fresh bass to the restaurant. Tanks of live lobster are in a small building so you can select a lobster to go. The parking is really limited. But you can drive up on your boat if you want. There are some hefty stairs to climb.

Yelp
Used to be an awesome place with great food and a great vibe. Now it's just an old run down tourist trap, no lobsters were even in the tank. Also prices were completely outrageous and absurd.

Yelp
Great location but the lobster roll is not the traditional "toasted, buttered bun. It's a hamburger bun (as advertised, I should have known better) it was blah and plain, had no taste to enhance the flavor. The least they should do is toast the hamburger bun, that goes along with the true lobster roll. When I asked one of the servers "why?" He said the grille stopped working. I smiled and chuckled. Unfortunately most of the "tourists" don't know the difference. I wouldn't return!

Yelp
This was our second visit to Chauncey Creek and we had a much better experience than our first visit, which is why I waited to write a review. As others have said, the location is very cool and scenic. Super casual, picnic tables outside, place your order and the food is then brought to your table. BYOB, and utensils, etc... Some people go all out with table cloths, flowers, etc.... On our first visit we had lobster rolls, and they were pretty weak as compared to any other we've had. Cold, not the most generous portion and served on a plain cold hamburger bun. We were unimpressed, and have not been back till now. Some of our friends really enjoy this spot and suggest we give it another shot with them. We had a great time, and ordered some different items. The crab roll was loaded with fresh, clean tasting crab and was very good. Our friends ordered boiled lobsters which are hard to mess up. Shrimp cocktail to start was nice. I tried the fried coconut shrimp which were good, not great. No orange marmalade on the side, but hey this is Maine, not Florida. I think it is an enjoyable venue, you can bring whatever food they don't sell, and it is a real plus to be able to bring your own beverages. Be careful parking, spaces are tight, the road is busy and it can be a bit tricky.

Yelp
I look forward to coming here every summer. Classic, hidden, New England Lobster Pound with a great view. Service (and lobsters) are hit or miss, I've only had a couple of poor experiences with staff. BYOB.

ziggy d.

Yelp
Stale hamburger bun , lackluster , flavorless lobster meat. Greasy onion rings and fries.

Yelp
I traveled a good distance for a Chauncey Creek Lobster meal and decided on a lobster roll this time. When I tasted it I knew something was WRONG. It didn't taste much like lobster. Was it too dry??? I went up and asked for them to add a bit more MAYO. When I got it back I tasted the next bite and knew instantly what was wrong. I went back to the window and asked "Is this made with MIRACLE WHIP"? Yup. Never in my New England life have I been served a lobster roll made with Miracle Whip. A pale, overly sweet, fake imitation of real mayonnaise that overwhelms rather than complimenting the subtle but devine taste of lobster. Sadly, I will never go there again but I wrote this review to worn the rest of you.

Yelp
This place is a 5 for the location, 2 for the price, 1 for taste and 1 for the customer service. The prices are wicked high and the taste of the lobster rolls had way too much celery salt and it was also fishy tasting. The onion rings we order never came out and we order haddock nuggets to try something else and they brought them out with an extra order of fries cause they thought that was what we were missing. I watched the girls eating directly from the same chip bags they were portioning chips for meals. Cooks with their feet up on the prepping station. The price per pound for live lobsters is literally $12 above the average for local lobster pound.
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely amazing experience. Husband and I had 2 pound lobsters. We also had steamers and french fries. Everything tasted amazing. service was phenomenal. Weather was perfect. Everything about our lunch with spot on. Can't wait to come back again.
google avatar

Shari R.

Yelp
If you are hoping for a traditional lobster roll on a buttery toasted roll you will not get it here. You will get your lobster salad on a day old hamburger bun. So bummed. Scenery and service were great..... the lobster salad was bland. Boo!

Yelp
Excellent food. Location is amazing. The staff is friendly. My lobster was perfect. Corm and coleslaw went well with the lobster. Family fun all around. Bring your own wine, a tablecloth and a fancy dessert and make it a great date night.

Yelp
Great location, friendly and attentive staff, dog friendly, fresh lobster! BYOB and chill out, there's no rush in this spot and you'll want to hang here as long as you can. Smallest lobsters are so fresh and packed full of juicy meat that two people can share. And they have covered seating if you want to stay out of the Sun but still enjoy waterfront dining. An absolute gem.
google avatar

paula d.

Yelp
i still feel sick. I ate 2 hours ago. the beans were greasy, the coleslaw was super runny the fish nuggets were disgusting and the whole place reeked of dead fish. so gross. I'm pretty sure i have food poisoning.
google avatar

Yelp
Mediocre lobster roll-very cool location. Literally a floating dock on the Chauncey River. Strang to a southerner tha people brought coolers in with picnic type foods.
google avatar

K D.

Yelp
Good food and great views make Chauncey's Pier a nice spot to relax and enjoy a meal by the water. The vibe is casual and unfussy, perfect for a laid-back outing. While they don't serve beer, you can BYOB, which I highly recommend to complete the experience.

Allison L.

Yelp
Don't go here. TERRIBLE lobster "rolls". Not served the traditional Maine way on a hotdog roll. They are served on hamburger buns which was the first red flag. The bun wasn't even toasted. It was completely plain. The lobster meat didn't taste like lobster meat at all. It tasted solely of celery. The texture of the meat was also extremely rubbery, as if it was made from frozen meat. I strongly recommend getting lobster rolls from any where else in the Kittery/Portsmouth area.

Denny M.

Yelp
The bread bowl clam chowder was very good. People were very friendly and it was a good location. We visited twice.

Yelp
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it". The long-time owner of Chauncey Creek sold out during the off-season. I am happy to report that nothing has changed. Still fun, still rustic, still good. The kids will love the big lobster tank. BYOB is still allowed. Bring a tablecloth, some wine, some sourdough, and go order a nice lobster. I heard a rumor that they get their lobsters from Canada, which is blasphemy amongst Mainers, but they are still sweet and fresh. I don't know if the chowder is good or not, but this is a very good Maine lobster pound dining experience. The views are great. The sides are awfully puny, though, and the potato salad is not that great. Just put on your bib and focus on the lobster and steamers.

Yelp
The first star is for the amazing location and atmosphere. Right on the Creek with an amazing view of nature. People bring their own picnic stuff and claim a table to decorate up and they order their main dishes from the restaurant. I saw people with tablecloths, napkins, candlestick holders, wine, etc. I will start with the parking situation. Horrible and dangerous. The restaurant is very crowded so there is no easy parking along the road. People were backing in because it is unsafe when you leave and you have to back into the road traffic. I actually saw one old lady get out and direct traffic so her friends could back out safely. I don't know how else they could do it, but it is a challenge to be aware of before you dine here. Then comes choosing a table. We got lucky and found one outside in the shade down by the bathrooms. Totally private, except for all the people using the facilities, LOL!! We enjoyed our time sitting and watching the clams squirt as the tide went down. We saw some birds and the amazing trees that line the creek were beautiful. While one of us stayed at the table, the others went to wait in a really long line. There were signs all over saying you need your table number, which we hadn't known when we got in line. So, one of us had to run down to the end of the pier to get our table number. Turns out there is a table map at the place you order so we really didn't need to do this!! The menu board is placed so low (below the order window) that when you are in line you can't see it. Also, it turned out that I didn't know until I got to the front of the line right before I ordered that they were out of so many items!! We were there about 6:00 so there must be good day sales. Turned out that everything I would have ordered was out, rumor has it that the fryer was broken!! I had plenty of time to get my order ready to go, but they got it all confused. I had to repeat it several times. We ended up ordering a lobster roll, 2 cups of clam chowder, and a hot dog (that was all I could find on the menu that I liked). I asked for some ketchup and napkins. They gave me a ton of ketchup packets, more than I would ever use. What a waste. I ordered some water to drink and a cup of ice. After the order was placed my sisters and I waited a really long time before, finally, the lobster roll was unceremoniously dropped on our table by a waiter who said "You guys got a lobster roll, right?". We waited at least 30 minutes before we realized the other items from our order were not coming!! One of my sisters went all the way back to the order window to check on our order. The server brought the rest of our items and offered some pie. We of course took the offer of pies, ordered the key lime and chocolate cheesecake. Although we appreciated the pie offer, they made no offer to replace the stale lobster roll!! The hot dog was awful, just warmed up and slapped on a bun. Whatever, it was food and we were really hungry by this time. My sisters ate their chowder and poked away at the sad lobster roll (which came with Ruffles chips and sweet pickles). The best part of the meal was the mac salad we brought ourselves and the cheesecake!! OK, I suppose I will give them another star for the cheesecake. I would definitely come here again for the atmosphere, but if the fryer was broken I would come back another day!! I would also make sure that if they didn't bring all our items at once that they knew there was more on our order. After all, it was probably just the waiter guessing about our lobster roll and they lost our $45 order!! I wish I could have removed the $10 tip I left when I paid. They certainly didn't deserve it, except for perhaps the server who offered us some pie.

Patrick Q.

Yelp
Great food, service, and atmosphere. BYOB was an added bonus. Will definitely be back.

Noah Q.

Yelp
The food Lobster was served on a Hamburger bun instead of a hotdog bun. The lobster was combined with mayo which took away from the fresh lobster. If you want drinks make sure to bring a wad of singles you have to shell out $3.00 into a vending machine to get a bottle of Coca-cola . The service was one person at a counter she didn't seem excited to be working. the view is so nice right on the water.

Yelp
This place was absolutely amazing! The moment I arrived, I knew this place is something special. :) The restaurant is very casual and situated by a creek, and occasionally you can see some boats and kayakers pass by. Very calming, beautiful view. Bad cellular reception though, just fyi! If you're not a local, it might be a good idea to load some offline maps and some music for the car ride. My friends and I ordered oysters on the half shell, onion rings, and french fries. All of these were super delicious! I particularly enjoyed that the onion rings used a very light batter... which means you don't get overly dough-y onion rings. Instead, you get a nice crisp. I personally preferred the onion rings over the fries, but both were seasoned nicely. The boiled lobster is no frills. You simply order by indicating how many lbs of lobster you'd like and they bring it out to your table along with a bib and some butter. The waitress who brought our food out to our table was also very warm and friendly. Another plus: The establishment is BYOB, so I saw some parties bring ice coolers filled with their own beer, wine, and soda. I'll have to make a note to do that next time!

Yelp
This was the first real live lobster experience for me and my wife. We came here as newbies and with an open mind. By the end of our week long vacation, we were educated by the 5 types of lobster cuisines to order. On this location, we ordered a 2.2 lb hard shell lobster. We went big and asked for the largest one available. The other order was for the regrettable cold lobster roll. The verdict is 5 out of 5 for the hard shell lobster. We have tasted the cheaper soft shell lobster before in California. So compared to the hard shell's taste, there is a distinct difference. We would give the softer shell a 3.5 out of 5. As for the cold lobster roll, it is a 2 out 5. We will never order one again. We had no idea how people rave about it over YouTube. But there is always a first time. All I can say is to try it once then decide. The other two lobster cuisines we tasted at different restaurants are the warm lobster roll and the grilled cheese lobster roll. The verdict for the warm roll is a 4 out 5. The grilled cheese lobster roll however is a heavenly 4.5 out of 5. It spelled and tasted like a heart attack waiting to happen. Good thing I am on Lipitor. LOL. Besides the lobster and roll, we also ordered clam chowder on a bread roll. We have tasted 3 other chowda's at other restaurants during our vacation. Nothing came close to Chauncey's. Once you tasted their chowda, the rest of them tasted bland especially the brand name chains Wicked Chowda and Boston Chowda. Give Chauncey Creek a try. Your biggest challenge is finding a parking spot especially from 11am to 2pm on weekends. There was one open parking spot when we arrived at 1:45pm Sunday afternoon.

Yelp
This place gets 5 stars for the location on the creek-we saw heron and deer, but 3 stars for the the food. We all had lobster rolls, which are oddly on a hamburger bun. This was fine, but one side of the bun was soggy on the bottom. The lobster was fine-not too much mayo, but there wasn't a ton of it and it was cut into fairly small pieces and I prefer large chunks. It was 23.00, which isn't the worst, but it only came with sad potato chips and two little slices of pickle. We all have had better lobster rolls.

Ray M.

Yelp
We were told the Chauncey Creek Lobster Pier was the place to go, disappointed. The sitting is rustic, right on the river , with picnic tables for dinning. We tried the lobster rolls and a cup of clam chowder. The clam chowder had flavor, but very little clams. The lobster rolls were served on a hamburger bun, with 4oz of lobster, with a side of potato chips and two pickle chips. Yep that's it!! For almost eighty dollars they are way overpriced for both the seating and the food. Our suggestion, don't bother, there are way better lobster rolls at way better prices in the area. Remember bad food, bad service or overpriced food should never be tolerated.

Yelp
Great location in Kittery Point, a seaside restaurant with a great outdoor patio on the water. Had the lobster roll around $24 which come with chips and had the side coleslaw and potato salad $1 each. The lobster roll is on a hamburger bun not the usual hotdog bun style. It was fresh but bland. Very little mayonnaise. The bread was not buttered and toasted.

Yelp
Great ambience, great service, it's a picnic table on the river, lobster roll kind of place and I love every second of being there.

Yelp
You can't get a fresher lobster anywhere- you pick out the one you want and they cook it! Great atmosphere, right on the water. Quick service too. Not much for vegans- fries or corn on the cob. This is a BYOB place, so bring your own adult beverages

Reyna C.

Yelp
We have been going to Chauncey Creek for at least 20 years, regularly, 3 times a season. We like the quality of the lobsters and the cool location. In all these years we never had a soft-shell lobster, half full of water, with hardly any meat, that is until this year when it happened twice. When it happened in August, after splitting the tail, we saw there was hardly any tail meat and lots of water. I spoke to the new manager, a pleasant fellow who told us he was taking over the business and gave us a replacement lobster full of meat. Yesterday, we couldn't believe it was happening again when we noticed the water in the tray and again, very little meat in the body and claws. We were shy of calling the manager again, but we were extremely disappointed. New management often means changes, and often prices go up but if the quality of the product doesn't stay the same then there is a problem.

Yelp
As I travel around New England, I am trying to understand the allure of Lobster. I'm a blue crab girl. Love me some blue crab!!!. It is sweet, tender meat, and so flavorful - but it also prepared with well seasoned water. Lobster, on the other hand, is chewy and tough, and never seems to be cooked with any flavor. I guess the butter is supposed to flavor the meat, but it didn't do it for me. That being said, I enjoyed the ambience of this place - right on the water. It was very casual, with outdoor seating. You pick a table, note the table number, place your order at the window or in the lobster house and once prepared, it is brought to you. You can also BYOB and other foods to enjoy with your shellfish. There were many families enjoying this amenity, I ordered the small 1 1/4 pound lobster and an ear of corn. The corn was fresh and delicious. The lobster - well it was lobster. The restaurant did nothing wrong. I've just decided that I don't think lobster is delicious enough for me and is too expensive for me not enjoy. As I continue my time in New England for the next 6 weeks, I think I'll stick to the raw bar, lobster bisque, scallops, fish, and whenever I see them, CRAB! The service was good. The view and woods across the creek was relaxing and beautiful. It was a very nice place to spend a lazy summer afternoon.

Yelp
Bring your own metal utensils and pickers...also your own alcohol. But great traditional steamed lobster and steamers...

Yelp
I know there is a Chauncey Creek Lobster Pier in heaven., or if there isn't, there is one on earth in Kittery, Maine. The place is like nothing else from this world, Absolutely, the best lobster experience on the planet. So glad I wandered into Chauncey Creek Lobster Pier! Ukulele Bill

Yelp
OMG. I ate the worlds biggest lobster here. 2.5 pounds. Yes, I ate it all by myself. Came here with a group of 10. I love the fact that you got to go into the shack and grab your own lobster out of the holding tanks. Unlike most restaurants where lobsters are in a tank and are very lethargic, these ones are in running water and they were perky! Good thing those pinchers were rubber banded together, because the lobsters were flipping and flopping around as you take them over to be weighed. At this point the lobster is left on the scale, and you tell the person behind the desk what else you wanted with your boiled lobster. You sit down, and after a while your lobster miraculously appears. I love the setting. We were on these open air picnic tables right by the river. It was gorgeous. Also, remember this is a BYOB place. Don't forget. And finally, parking is very tight. You may have to park a little ways up or down the very narrow road. Don't let that deter you-eat here!

Yelp
It is a great intro to lobstah and Maine...in an awesome setting. There is something for everyone and byob for items they don't carry on the menu. It is pricey but it's lobstah!

Yelp
Day 2 of our Lobster Every Day trip. This was our first time ever in the state of Maine and we both needed Live Maine Lobsters fresh from the source. And we needed them ASAP! We were directed to this little 'shack' on the edge of a creek that flows into Portsmouth Harbor. The lobster is fresh off the boat as well as all their other seafood items. As mentioned, this is more of a shack than restaurant. It's built on a pier and the seating is covered picnic tables. It's also a BYOB establishment. They ask you to respect that fact and not bring in anything they sell, but you can bring a picnic basket of wine and other drinks to have with your incredibly fresh seafood. Select a table and take note of the table number. Step into the lobster shack to see three tanks full of lobsters of different sizes. You can place your full order here. There is also full table service if you want. We had two 1 1/4 pound lobsters, 20 raw oysters, onion rings, and Cherrystones. First up were the oysters. I've been eating raw oysters since I was a little kid. However, I'm normally eating them in the land-locked state of Minnesota. Having the oysters this fresh is a treat and these were by far the freshest I've ever had. I wanted to order more, but we have more food on order. The lobsters showed up along with a claw cracker. The rest is up to you. I'm an old pro and cracking the shells. I showed my GF some tricks of the craft and we devoured these beautiful creatures. So fresh and sweet that I almost forgot to dip into the butter. If you've read any of my past reviews, one criteria I always rate on is onion rings. I love my rings. This is not a fair rating of a place like this and I would not have mentioned the rings, except for they are wonderful. Light, crispy, fresh sweet onions. Before leaving my GF wanted to look at the dessert and went up to the other shack to order a slice of pie. Oh, there are two shacks, one has the lobster tanks, the other is for ordering everything else if you do not plan to order lobster. She noticed a sessional item, Cherrystones. I never heard of this, but quickly found out they are quahog clams. She ordered a plate of these raw. I've never had these in any form before so this was a treat. Deliciousness. A tad more brine than the oysters, but amazing in their own right. If we ever get back out here we will stop back in! This is a DO NOT MISS spot for the freshest lobsters and oysters.

Yelp
The meal I had at Chauncey Creek was solid and the views were beautiful. I am from the area and had been meaning to visit for years. Unfortunately on the day I visited in August, they were out of almost everything on the menu and were also not serving fried foods in addition. There were signs up saying they could not find staff. I feel for them! It has been a hard couple years of supply chain and staffing issues. But it didn't make for a better than 3 star experience. It was cute that they had pie though!

Yelp
CHAUNCEY CREEK: We've got the (lobstah) meats! I'm sure lots of people already know about it, but I only recently heard about this casual restaurant on a dock from Phantom Gourmet (which I DVR but actually rarely ever watch). The sides are nothing to go crazy over (the onion rings were pretty decent, but mussels and steamer clams are just so-so), but pick your own super-fresh (and super-active!) lobster for them to boil for you, and BYO anything you want that they don't sell (I brought a plum tart I made for dessert), while sitting on a comfortable dock as the sun goes down, is one version of heaven. My 2.7 pound hardshell female was maybe the best boiled lobstah I've evah had! Mid-week, post-Labor Day, it wasn't very crowded and we had no trouble parking in their small lot (maybe a dozen or so spaces). It looks like you can also park on the street on the opposite side as well. There were a few mosquitos, so you might want to bring some bug spray. And don't forget to toss some scraps to the crabs! Yelp
A true seafood experience. Stopped by to enjoy some lobster. Some of the best lobster I've ever had. Kind of pricey but it is well worth it! The crew there was very good and came by often to see if I needed any thing! Sat outside on the water it was a beautiful setting! They don't serve alcohol but you can bring your own. Really enjoyed this place!

Yelp
Perfect place for a lazy Sunday summer afternoon. It has outdoor patio like seating and it overlooks a river, so it's very family friendly and accommodating. They allow BYOB and I saw many people bringing in picnic style snacks and food and then ordering live lobster which is sold by the pound. They have a 2 hour limit for eating which seems fair and the price points seem OK or at least comparable to other seafood restaurants I've seen in Boston area, although their side dishes are definitely on the cheaper side. Only thing is they are a little tricky on parking as the street it's on is extremely narrow and they have very limited space although there were two young and helpful boys navigating customer parking! It'd probably be best to carpool if traveling with a large group, but I'd recommend and come back!

Yelp
We always stop at Chauncey Creek on our way from Boston to the Maine Coast. This vacation was no exception. My wife and I both ordered 1.5 pound lobsters. We both thought the lobster tasted very good. What was not so good was the price. The lobster was $19 a pound. That to me was too expensive. We also got a side of potato salad and coleslaw which were both uneatable. Unfortunately, our traditional stop for lobster, when we enter Maine, will have to be at a different location.

Yelp
This place is such a gem! Bring your favorite app and bottle of wine and enjoy their juicy lobster, steamers and clam chowder. Fantastic service, especially Josephine! She was so pleasant and actually remembered us from previous visits! Plus the location can't be beat. It's so nice to have a sense of normalcy while also feeling safe. Complete your summer with a trip to Chauncey Creek!

Yelp
Didn't get to eat here because they were closed even though the website and online said they were open. There were several people that arrived but left frustrated. We went to Fox's Lobster House in York~ Great service and very good food!

Yelp
Such a cool spot! You can sit outside, enjoy the view, bring your own food and drinks, so lovely!

Yelp
This place was recommended to us by a local and it delivered. The lobster pier is on the water- In fact, some boats were tied up to the restaurant. This is a classic lobster in the rough place. It was clean and well run. You order and pay at a window and the food is delivered to one of the picnic tables. The atmosphere is very festive. The restaurant allows patrons to bring food that isn't served on the menu, as long as you don't stay mire than two hours . People brought elaborate picnics with table cloth, wine glasses and all kinds of different food. We saw one group making fresh guacamole tableside. The food was very good overall. The steamers, French fries and onion rings were standouts. The lobster rolls were good. The popcorn shrimp were good. I didn't see any fried clams on the menu, but maybe I missed them. We sampled a very good slice of blueberry pie for dessert. Great place with a great vibe, friendly staff and above average food. Worth a detour!

Yelp
What a fun and unique location. Recently celebrated our father's birthday here! This is the perfect family-friendly dining location if you love seafood in a casual atmosphere. Lobster, clams, mussels are all delicious. BYOB and you can bring other sides, snacks or deserts. I saw some tables even had table clothes, fliers, candles and more. Friendly service as well.
