Best Lunches Near UT Austin Campus in Austin | Eater Austin

"This Arizona-based chain is dishing out toasted subs (get it?) with cannabis-themed names, like Chronic and Sensi Kush, in North Campus. Takeout orders can be placed online; there are indoor and outdoor dine-in areas." - Darcie Duttweiler

I placed an order online but arrived early so we decided to grab a drink at the bar; D'Andre was great! He let us know the specials and made me a great Dirty Hippy- the drink is a little sweeter than I tend to order but it was very refreshing and well mixed. My food order was ready exactly on schedule and the subs were hot and tasty. I got the Kali Mist which I enjoyed, just the right amount of spicy. The pretzel bites were also pretty good but I didn't love the honey mustard- if I get them again I'd get a different dipping sauce. Price for the food was decent; seemed a tad expensive for what you get but on par with general high Austin prices. Though the drink was $7 and that was 100% a great price. My only real complaint is the foil wrap- I guess its to keep the food warmer but I find paper wrapping to be easier to maneuver without it ripping and I wasn't a fan of the way the foil was kind of shoved into the sandwich itself making it extra messy to open. The vibe of the place is silly but fun (other than the drink called a bong water something... gross). Loved the murals on the wall though! There is free parking in the garage behind the shops and the bathroom was spotless.

Amazing subs. Amazing art work if your into that. And bad ass vibe. Everything was quick such as service and eating. Not much talking when the food is that good. Ill go back again and again. Not expensive either.😗🤌🏼

I really enjoy the sandwiches here. There is a good variety to choose from, and even their smallest sandwich (nug-“4) is a filling sandwich. Honestly, I only get a bigger sandwich to take some home for later. Their staff is super cool, and I appreciate that they ask if I want to take any off the sandwich as a forgetful raw tomato disliker. I got the La Canna(Italian), and it was great as always. One of the sandwich places that I return to when I’m in a sandwich mood.

Google
This place is awesome! Love the atmosphere and the nostalgia. Has an old school vibe and the name of this place speakers for itself. The menu has a lot of 420 references which makes it fun and cool especially when you order! The food is amazing and taste great. This is nowy new go-to for a sub sandwich! The food came out how and fast, definitely recommend this place to dine in or carry out you won't be disappointed and I guarantee you will go back again and again!

Google
Once again this Cheba Hut tastes like pure regret. Ordered a BLT with avocado and got thee sloppiest sandwich of life. Barely any lettuce, wilted tomatoes & one tiny sliver of avocado but to be fair 3lbs of mayonnaise took up the rest of the sandwich. This is still the worst Cheba Hut I’ve ever been to.

Google
The food was amazing. My wife and I were saying it'd be great if Houston had a location. The kids also enjoyed it and ate every bite on their plates. The service was a little slow getting the food out, but that doesn't detract at all because of how delicious the subs were and the staff was incredibly friendly.

Google
We had a great experience. I love sandwiches and always look for a new place to eat. We accidentally stumbled upon this place and wanted to try it out. I am so glad we did because they have the best sandwiches in Austin area. I tried the Griefo and which is a vegetarian cold sandwich and my husband tried the Acapulco Barbecue chicken. It was so good. We were also so impressed by the amount of vegetarian choices they had. They have hot as well as cold sandwiches. staff is very friendly and helpful too. They have plenty of parking as well as plenty of seating area. Such an amazing find on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.

I've been a regular customer since Cheba Hut in Austin opened in 2020. I remember like it was yesterday with my standard order of one (or three) of the Ms. Parker -- a sweet, fizzy delight composed of Ole Smoky, Blackberry Moonshine, fresh lemon juice and simple syrup topped with soda water -- and the White Widow sandwich on garlic bread. In the intervening years, I've altered food/drink orders and everything I've had is fantastic. There's a nicely stocked bar and an array of delicious sandwiches prepared quickly and expertly. In homage to its base, the stunning mural on the wall was commissioned by local artists. The happy hour is the best one I've come across in Austin and Wednesday game nights are so much fun! My regular bartenders -- Jacky, Noah and Trevor -- are friendly and professional, always greeting me with a smile and great service. It's become my personal Cheers, a friendly place where everybody knows my name!

Yelp
Sammies are fire! I love this one so much and I love the way you draw it and the way you do it with the colors and the way it looks like you have a great style and style and I love it so much and I hope you have a wonderful day too and I hope to see you soon.

Yelp
Tried the French Dip sandwich at Cheba Hut today, and it was a bit underwhelming. The beef was tender and the au jus was flavorful, but the sandwich fell short in a couple of areas. The bread was a bit too soft, becoming soggy quickly, and the raw red onions overpowered the more subtle flavors. While it had potential, the execution left something to be desired. A good sandwich, but not great. Three stars. Also, add more salt into the au jus.

Yelp
It's good, but nothing crazy! I ordered the Kali Mist without the bacon or jalapenos, so I essentially just made it a chipotle mayo sub. It was a refreshing nice light sandwich. I got the 8 inch, and it was just enough. I did think the parmesan cheese on top was game changer. The vegetables were also fresh. Needed more veggies though. Good sandwich overall! 7.5/10, might get it again, but not likely.

Yelp
Came here with a friend for a sandwich after being out in the sun all day and our sandwiches were good but they didn't hit like we hoped they would. The bacon on this was super thin and definitely microwave bacon. I think it was lacking a fresh taste, maybe it would've been good with some vinegar on the lettuce. The staff was friendly and the inside was very decorated.
google avatar

Sage O.

Yelp
Loved my sandwich! The space was much bigger inside than expected. I can see myself stopping in for a sub when I'm in the area for sure. I liked the seasoning and sauce on the Kali Mist. Service was friendly and prompt!

Yelp
I've been a loyal fan of Cheba Hut for years, having visited their locations in Arizona, Nevada, and most recently, Florida. Every time, their sandwiches offer a whirlwind of flavors that are unlike anything you'll find at your typical sub shop. On our latest visit, we had the pleasure of meeting the owner, which added a personal touch to an already fantastic dining experience. The food, as always, did not disappoint. If you're tired of the usual offerings from Publix, Subway, or Firehouse Subs, Cheba Hut is the culinary detour you need to make. We will absolutely be returning and highly recommend Cheba Hut to anyone looking for a unique, flavor-packed sandwich experience.

Yelp
Awesome and cool place. Great unique subs and atmosphere. Love it. Will be back to try more of the different types of subs. Has a bar also with outdoor window service.

Michael M.

Yelp
Great ambiance, great food, great service! We had Paige as our bartender and she was such a delight!
google avatar

Aanand S.

Yelp
Came here for the elevated sub experience. Meatballs were on point. I should have just gotten that in all three (I think of their flavors). My friend got some different flavors for the meatballs and his was great too. Service was great even when it was during busy lunch service. We sat outside the shot at the bar. Very chill ambiance. Some were inside scattered around but totally relaxed vibe. Will definitely drop in again when I'm in the area craving a sub.
google avatar

Yelp
My first time and i dont think it will be my last! I got the pacific blue( tuna melt) and was not disappointed. We also got the nachos- yummmmm! It is a really chill place to get a good sandwich and a beer(if you are so inclined)! I was told that it is originally from Denver and then it all made sense. Parking also makes it an ideal place to grab lunch!
google avatar

Yelp
The vibe, customer service and food gets all the stars. My daughter, her friend and I ate lunch here as recommended by a neighbor. We were visiting Austin, so we were super excited to have good food. My daughter's friend and I got the Kali Mist sandwich and my daughter got the Jamaican Red sandwich. I love spice so I got a side of the Jamaican red hot sauce to dip my sandwich in. There was a bar but I was so focused on the food that I can't remember if it was a full bar (sorry). It is a MUST go to and it's family friendly. So drink the kool-aid (literally because they have kool-aid), eat and be merry!

Yelp
More like cheba BUTT!! I consider myself a Cheba Hut connoisseur! I've been to every Cheba Hut in every state. Looking forward to crossing off my final TX Cheba experience as it has always been nothing short of delightful. And I gotta tell ya, what a disappointing crescendo to my cheba scavenger hunt. We had to wait a few minutes at the register for someone to help us. Mind you, it was not busy at all. There was a gentleman that looked at us silently and then walked away. Suddenly there appeared a woman walking up to the register and with the energy of a water Buffalo she asked, "dine in or take out?" We were seated and are well aware of the time it takes for the subs to be prepared. Not our first rodeo and the taste of that Kali mist is always worth the wait! THIS TIME??? Not at all. I had to really force myself to finish what was in front of me. Just didn't have that quality freshness and bite that the other locations always have. Very disappointed in Austin's representation of this otherwise incredible chain! If this had been my first experience at Cheba Hut, it would have surely been my last as well, and the race across every state to eat at them all would have been vanquished. I guess I really did save the worst for last.

Christine O.

Yelp
The subs are always fire but I decided the try the power plant salad. The ingredients were super fresh and it was quite a large size salad. The only downfall was I didn't get the spicy ranch I selected or the jalapeño cilantro hummus it came with but I'll blame it on Uber Eats. I paired the salad with a ginger dressing I had at home and all is good in the world. The kali mist sub slapped.

Yelp
Pro tip get the pretzel bites - will change your life :) Can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Huge portion sizes and delicious bites!
google avatar

Andrea S.

Yelp
I can't even report on the food, because it takes too long to even get a meal from this place. I called in an order on a Monday thinking it would be quick but I was wrong. The girl on the phone tells me 20 min. So I left my house after 25 min. Got there they said 30 min. After 45 min my ticket wasn't even on the line to be made. I had to leave and go to Burger King to get dinner. Sorry no sandwich is worth waiting an hour and half for.
google avatar

Yelp
Apparently I never got the memo on Cheba Hut. It's a chain? Well damn, it's delicious. Only got some food to-go but it looks like a pretty chill spot to hang out and have a beer, too. Got an assortment of sandwiches and they were all good. Might be my favorite sandwich in Austin... we are severely lacking a proper NYC style deli sandwich, but that's another story.

David J.

Yelp
This place is hittin'! The vibe was chill, 420 friendly. The food was on point and the serving sizes were just enough.
google avatar

Xiao Z.

Yelp
Their nugget size is pretty descent, especially it comes with pretty good amount of the filling. I tried the AK 47 ( French dip). The sub was warm and fulfilling. It's actually my first time trying French dip, the broth is quite salty. Though the roasted beef, onion, portobello are tasty, but somehow I felt the mushroom was bland. Other than that, everything else was really good!
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
I'm not going to give them a 1-star because it wasn't a total loss. The bread was crust and good, the flavor of both the subs was okay, but 2-stars equates to "it could of been better" and that's the truth here - it could have been better. First off - when I order a sub, I want some meat in it, and I got their Italian version and it was definitely lacking meat. I couldn't believe how thinly sliced the meat was and the secondary ingredients (lettuce, veggies) made up most of the sub - and I felt like I was eating a vegetarian sub with crusty bread and a wee bit portion of meat. Plus I paid 7 bucks for a 4 incher - WTF? This is the biggest downfall here - the lack of critical ingredients. Having enough meat is important to any sub and sandwich, and the portions here are pathetic. Penny Pinchers usually don't last. This problem is fixable, but with my experience nothing will be done to improve. A few more meat slices only costs them less than a buck, and would really make the sandwich more robust and give it some POW! but in I have never seen this happen unfortunately, so I cannot say I will be back here. This place reminded me of Snarf's. Remember them? Probably not because they came and went, they couldn't sustain all of their stores.. They were okay when they first opened, got some press, they had the crusty bread yet just like Cheba Hut they gave you small portions of meat. I went and tried them a couple of times and was so disappointed we never went back. Zen Master says.....we'll see.

Yelp
The Cheba rollers in the back know where it's at! They're killing it and have their system down. I went today for the free 4" nug and let me know say, it took me there. My bf and I got two different subs and they were both so tasty. They have a wide variety to choose from and amazing vegan options. The staff are super friendly and the space is clean with a lot to gander at.

Yelp
Love coming to Cheba perfect spot always hits the munchies in a perrff way :) Great tasty sandwiches Great fast service

Yelp
I want to begin with the fact that we LOVE Cheba Hut! The Colorado Springs location hit it out the park every single time for us during family visits. The Austin-Guadalupe location has been here for some time and they used to maintain that same super dope standard for their food & service. But lately it's been Hit Or Miss /: My girlfriend and I have tried to figure out which days to avoid based on when the food is subpar but it's so inconsistent that we just have to chance it. When Cheba hits it HITS, but then there's the days like today where the pinner isn't really a full 8", it's missing ingredients, and everything in our bag is smashed when we come for pick-up. I'm sure they get by with having so many good days and loyal customers that management doesn't care to do quality control that much but it sure does make us miss that Colorado Springs location.

Nicole P.

Yelp
Tried Cheba Hut today after thrift shopping and we were very happy with the food! Hubs and I split an Italian and Kali mist. Both were great but I loved the Kali Mist on the Garlic bread they have. Definitely recommend for a delicious sandwich!
google avatar

Hayden S.

Yelp
I don't know about you, but I'm not sure that there's much better than a well rounded, hearty sandwich and this place has solid sandwiches! This was our first visit to a Cheba Hut and after having it in Austin I immediately looked to see if there's one in Houston. THERE IS! The sandwiches were fresh with lots of toppings and warm, soft bread. Honestly all the sandwiches looked yummy, but I got La Canna (Italian) and was very satisfied. They also have a bar, so we enjoyed a nice, cold Passionfruit Austin Eastciders that totally hit the spot on a hot day like today. We can't wait to visit the location at home in Houston!

Jack A.

Yelp
Don't come here late they won't take your order, 30 mins before they close an can't make a sandwich lmao
google avatar

Tj J.

Yelp
Jean-luc hooked it up. First time at the texas location, after going to the Arizona location 200 times! They have draft beer which is different but that's a plus for me! Bryson was great and actually told me to try new things. This might of been the best experience since I've tried Cheba. Belieber it or not this place is super popular around Arizona State.
google avatar

Dave T.

Yelp
The subs were really good and I'd like to go back. Just be warned fellow-mushroom haters, they're in everything! Not a bad thing, just be wary!
google avatar

Caitlin T.

Yelp
Phenomenal sub & you don't even need to be "toasted" to enjoy it. I got the Kali Mist in the nug size and it was a good size! Super fresh and so so good!! We also got the queso that comes with bread for dipping; the perfect snack! I had to pass on it, but they even have Kool-aid. Nostalgia!! Can't wait to try the other options. We did have to pass over several dirty tables that hadn't been wiped down, but otherwise the place was clean and the staff was friendly!
google avatar

Zach M.

Yelp
Chēba Hut is, by far, my favorite toasted sandwich spot in existence. Staff is always friendly, and every location has a fun stoner-themed mural that usually has references to local culture.
google avatar

Cameron N.

Yelp
I've been meaning to try Cheba since college but only got to it recently. We were glad to have parking so accessible with quick food orders. There are many options. We thought the sandwiches were great, nothing unique, but yummy. The sides and apps were the great stuff. Also - the guy that supports the University of Alabama was extremely friendly!

Karla F.

Yelp
As someone who has come here since opening, I am so disappointed with how extremely disrespectful the employees are. We waited 30 minutes to even be acknowledged at the front counter. Sometimes orders are taken at the bar so I thought I'd ask, and the idiot behind the bar yelled no in my face without even looking up at me from his cell phone. The guy at the front counter finally comes up to us seeing we are already visibly annoyed from waiting 30+ minutes to order, and continues to give us the worst attitude I've ever received from an employee anywhere. Food was cold, floors and tables were filthy, overall a horrible experience and we will not be back.
google avatar

Christine H.

Yelp
This is the place to go if you have had a long night and want to have greasy food! However, on a normal day, I'd suggest another place. I ordered a Panama Red (Chicken Marinara) and shared a loaded not'chos. The sandwich was heavy and loaded, but the chicken was very tender! The loaded not'chos were like a pizza version of nachos. It was not bad and fairly decent. A few people came in later and started smoking there. It wasn't the best experience. If you just want some late night greasy and filling food, then try here. If not, then don't bother.
google avatar

Yelp
The marketing pitch of Cheba Hut Subs is that they are an institution for the promotion of marijuana and the moral defense of marijuana users. As far as I could tell, no marijuana was for sale on the premises ... Although I might not have known the right person to ask. They do have a very collegiate bar with lots of the foul cheap bottles that undergraduates pour into six ingredient party drinks. One night of getting sick from one of those babies, And you will stick to marijuana for the rest of your life. * * * How are the subs? They make a perfectly fine lunch. I had a toasted BBQ Roast Beef Sub with their normal vegetables And hummus subbing for the house vinaigrette for the bread covering. It was warm. It was toasty. It tasted fine. I waddled out of there well fed. * * * I had a single four incher. These sandwiches have heft. Eight inchers and twelve inchers are available, But four inches ought to do you. And if you don't want to get COVID, They have a perfectly decent outdoor patio. No one was out there while I was chowing down. * * * Frankly, since Delaware Sub went to the bowwows, There have not been very many good sub options in this town. Cheba's can cover for those times when a sub sandwich is a fundamental human need. The place is six times as good if you have THC-induced-munchies. But the subs are good enough That you can even eat them sober.
google avatar

Aude L.

Yelp
I loved Cheba hut in Madison, Wisconsin. I still love it in Austin, Texas. Gigantic and delicious subs for a great price. I like getting the extra big size so I can get 2-3 meals out of it when I have a crazy week and don't feel like cooking. The photo says it all!
google avatar

Brittany L.

Yelp
Cheba Hut is a classic Austin staple and I absolutely love the atmosphere here! The decor is clever and the special KoolAid drinks are a special nostalgic touch. All the sandwiches are fresh and there are plenty of options to choose from (even veggie subs). They also offer deserts for that sweet tooth! What I love about this location is the indoor/outdoor bar concept. You can easily enjoy your sandwich outside and order a beer/cocktail from the bartender at ease. If you order ahead- your order will be ready at the bar FYI.

Bianca R.

Yelp
I ordered through favor and it was so yummy! I'd definitely buy again and the sauce was

Yelp
Happen upon this shop... now I'm addicted. Don't ask me what I want to eat because it'll always be cheba hut.
google avatar

Beck W.

Yelp
Great munch. Definitely come here if you want a sandwich. I always get the Midwest best but the white widow is also really good.
google avatar

Henry C.

Yelp
Best subs in town, hands down! Great variety of options and they are all really good!

Dawnelle ..

Yelp
Their sandwiches slam! Much better than some of the local sandwich shops. Fair warning: they are a little messy but who cares!! Excellent flavor, still hot after getting them back to the office, and an awesome selection. I had the G-13 and I highly recommend it if you like roast beef. I was not so impressed with the confusion at where my order was when I went to pick it up (for a company luncheon), but at least it was ready. Give them a try!!
google avatar

Alejandra T.

Yelp
Sub was ok, nothing out of this world. I felt like they deserve three stars for how slow they are. Waiting 25 min for a sub to go for 1 person is not ok. Staff was joking around and moving so slow behind the bar won't be going back. 25 min is not an exaggeration. 3 people got their sandwiches before me. They looked pretty high too.

Mason J.

Yelp
Amazing subs but takes about an hour to make 1 or 2. Wish the online pickup time was accurate so I didn't have to sit in the restaurant for 30 minutes.
google avatar

Jeffrey G.

Yelp
Really good sandwiches. The names are funny and entertaining. Drink selection needs some work though. Sour kool-aid... no thanks. Put some some sugar in there and we are golden.

Meaghan P.

Yelp
THE BEST subs in town!! the quality and price was amazing! the customer service here is even better. the manager on duty was very hands on and you can tell he cares about his staff. the whole place is a vibe!
google avatar

Julia L.

Yelp
Makes a damn good sandwich and some tasty strong drinks. Very chill and lowkey vibe, perfect for a hangover and munchies. Massive hangover=massively cured Thai Stick: Very yummy perfect amount of each ingredient (not to much lettuce/sauce) just wish the chicken was a little crispier. (8/10) Teriyaki Meatballs: these are the best meatballs you will ever taste. I want a tub of this. (10/10)Did forget to bring us this originally but they really made up for the wait! Drinks: Gin and Juice- cured the hangover with the help of some orange juice and a fuck ton of gin. (7/10) Mrs. Parker- Raspberry Moonshine drink that wasn't just delicious but also refreshing asf. (10/10) Kool-aid shots: JP and i were very thrown off by the portion size they gave us (was expecting like a shot not a fucking drink) but they did the job Thank you Cheba Hut!!
google avatar

Whitney K.

Yelp
This was the best sandwich I've had in forever. My husband agrees. It's been three days and we're still celebrating the triumph of the decision to stop here when traveling through town. Looking forward to returning to Houston for another sub.

Cj L.

Yelp
So happy cheba is in texas! Service industry discount and a great bar. One of Colorado's best sandwiches!

Morgan C.

Yelp
This place is so good!!! If you want a sandwich that melts in your mouth, go to Cheba Hut!

Yelp
Not your typical walk in and order take out sandwich shop. This place acts as a sports bar kind of restaurant with TV's playing all kinds of games and other stuff. Outside seating on the patio is available, and on nice sunny days the windows are open so that everyone can enjoy the pretty days. I think I may have to make more trips to the Drag if I want to find places like this. I had the sandwich with roast beef, provolone, mushrooms, and a few other toppings. There was a lunch special where if you ordered a medium sized beer you can get a discount on the meal. THIS is a great deal, especially if you're stopping in for lunch on a day off or are just getting off work. It may only be for lunchtime, but I'll investigate more next time I go. The sandwich also came with this great dipping sauce that reminded me of the stuff that goes great with mushrooms. Sadly I don't have a picture of this delicious meal, but I will hopefully be back again soon. Come enjoy some sandwiches at this great little place. Parking is available in the back garage or the lot across the street from the restaurant.

Vy N.

Yelp
Love their sandwiches. They somehow toasted it to be so perfect. I got Jamaican red- spicy but soo good!
