16 Spots for Takeout Sandwiches | Eater San Diego

"If you haven’t guessed, cannabis is the theme of this sandwich shop but you don’t have to be toasted to appreciate their creations. Sandwiches come served on a choice of white, whole wheat or garlic herb bread. As for fillings, choose from BBQ roast beef, ham, turkey and vegetarian options. Visit the store or order online." - darlene-horn

Google
Love the ambiance of this place. Super casual place with hella cali vibes. I had the white widow which is their most popular sub. They put a lot of meat in the sub and the 8 inch is really filling. I would’ve liked some more sauce but a really solid sandwich. They also have a great selection of beers and extremely warm and friendly staff.

Google
MY GOODNESS GRACIOUS! This place is absolutely GAS 🗣️ Cheba was recommended to me by my nail technician Nay! She recommended the Kali Mist and when I tell you this toasted sub blew me away I mean it! Every bite was absolutely delicious and mouth watering!!! The first crisp bite of the perfectly toasted sub was life altering, I don’t think I’ll eat any other toasted sub like this ever again. I cannot wait to try their different signature sandwiches. 10/10

Google
Not just your average sandwich shop. Cheba Hut is one of the dopest places around. Very good sandwiches, and they came out pretty dang fast at this location. Having koolaid drink dispensers brings me back to childhood. High quality, but a little pricey. You get what you pay for tho! The ambiance is something you need to experience for yourself at least once in your life if you enjoy trees!🍁🍃

Google
This restaurant was a lot of fun. We were having a hard time deciding where and what to eat this evening and finally decided on sandwiches. My son had heard good things about Cheba Hut so we decided to give it a try. It reminded us a bit of a local restaurant chain in KC…Yellow Sub but with a bit more personality and charm. They also offered a broader menu selection. The parmesan garlic bread was very tasty and was a hit. This restaurant also offered a full bar to go with their menu items. Can’t wait to return.

Google
Cheba Hut was recommended to me by my brother! In my opinion, just ok. I ordered: -kali mist pinner (garlic bread) $13.29 Free drink for yelp check in. It was super spicy for me...flavors were good, but not a lot of meat. So value wasn't there for me. Some staff was friendly...others were not. Some parking available in the lots...but limited. There is seating inside and outside. We opted to sit inside on a warm weekday...and not sure if there is no AC available...but super humid inside with no air flow. Overall, ok meal.

Google
Great sandwiches. Love the fresh bread. I like the KGB or the Chicken Bacon ranch. The blueberry lemon cookie yum. Happy Hour has a $2 house blond beer that is nice.

Google
First time back since they moved into their new space. Really a big improvement, and the food seems to come out much quicker. Delicious sandwiches.

Google
Cheba Hut is one of our favorite go-to restaurant and now with its new location (next door to where the other one used to be) it’s much more spacious. This restaurant is kid and pet friendly with lots of fun art and photos throughout the restaurant. Our family love the the self served Kool-Aid drinks and the pinball machines they now have. They have vegan toasted sub options and kid friendly food available, salads, and treats. This is such a fun place to hangout with friends and family. Indoor and outdoor seating is available. Spacious parking lot area. Mobile ordering is available.

Yelp
FOOD Best toasted subs!! I refuse to go anywhere else for toasted subs. Our husband and I's go-to is: Kali Mist + La Canna - BLUNT SIZE SERVICE Staff are always friendly I usually order these toasted subs "to-go" on Sunday afternoons and each time the staff totally load our sandwiches up with all the goods, VERY filling. I always make sure to order ahead of time, and usually they're ready by the time I go, or I just have to wait a few minutes. We ordered one time on a Saturday night and it was not a great experience. Our order was super delayed and our sandwiches were pretty scant. I'm guessing Saturday nights are very busy and staff might feel rushed. AMBIANCE Great ambiance, very laid back and everything is weed-themed which is both hilarious and amusing. There's also a youthful energy to it as the interior is brightly colored, they've got some old arcade games there. I've only eaten inside twice, and both were great experiences, casual So-Cal vibe

Yelp
Great sandwich shop with a large variety of sandwich choices. Some very unique combinations that just work. I had the Kali Mist, the spicy mayo on it was well, spicy, but I love spice and it was perfect for me. Give this place a try, so much better than any chain sandwich shop.

Yelp
I ordered at 5:44pm with Erin ! @ San Diego Location My order never came out as I watched other customers that ordered after me get there food first, so I had got up to ask one of the guys about my order around 6:14pm He walked to the back then picked up my order from the side then put it in line with the other orders to be made, then the female that originally had taken my order had put it back in the system to be made . The African American cashier offered me some treats for the wait. The order came out by 6:26pm The food mediocre, not enough chicken, not enough sauce, I had an overall better experience at the old location Chebe Hut before they changed locations so this was my first bad experience at this location. The Tap water was nasty ! Aha The female cashier (Erin) came to apologize right before we left at 6:40pm

Yelp
Food is immaculate. I'm so happy I decided to try it because it was so good I went back two days later for a repeat.
google avatar

Curt T.

Yelp
The sandwiches here were just eh. They lacked flavor. I got the power plant and it just tasted like veggies cooked and placed between the bread. I didn't try the magic mushroom as I don't like mushrooms but my partner said it was about the same. The bread was ok but nothing spectacular. Not sure if I'd be back
google avatar

Calvin J.

Yelp
Note: draft PBRs do NOT qualify for the $2 well shot. So much for "any" draft. Sandwiches are good tho.
google avatar

Elijah C.

Yelp
They're on top of their game. It's definitely a full experience, my only gripe is price point. I would struggle to convince myself to pay this much for a sandwich even though it's a good sandwich. I think of the Miss Tomato Sandwich Shop, $12 for a top of the line sub. Nonetheless, others would surely happily pay this. For me it remains a 4 star.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is fun. Lots to look at. Big menu with a lot of different options. I LOVE that they offer a 4" sandwich option. Never seen that anywhere else. I, and others in my group, thought the sandwiches could use more flavor, but there was still plenty to praise, like the perfectly toasted buns. It's cool that there's a bar, outdoor seating, patio games, and other games inside too.
google avatar

Janina F.

Yelp
Ive always wanted to try this place after my friend told me about it so finally my husband and I tried it last night. I ordered the La Canna on garlic bread and it was really good, flavorful and just the right meat, cheese and veggies portioned throughout! I definitely want to try the other sandwiches so we will be back again! Also fyi it kind of took awhile and we came later in the evening after the dinner rush so I would either call in your order or order online if you are in a rush.

Yelp
The new cheba hut location pays homage to San Diego in such a fun way! Ron burgundy is plastered in huge murals throughout the shop. If you stop by for a drink, they're cocktails and beer are a great price For sandwiches Acapulco gold (bbq chicken): This sandwich was too good. The garlic herb bread is amazing. I recommend adding jalapeños & banana peppers to this one! 5-0 (all the pig baby): tons of meat on this sandwich. Includes prosciutto, salami, and other meats! My partner is hooked on this one Sandwiches take some time but worth the wait!!
google avatar

Makena L.

Yelp
THE BEST SANDWICHES EVEEERRRRRR!! the people who work there are always so kind and fun to get to know and chat with. sometimes it can be a bit of a wait for your sandwich, BUT IT IS SOOOOOOOO WORTH IT EVERY TIME!! the new restaurant is so much bigger than the old one, with a ton of seating and really fun decor! I totally recommend. I always stop by when I'm in San Diego!

Yelp
Fantastic sandwiches served in a funky vibe. Truly enjoy the food here and make a point to come here when I'm in the area. Staff is super friendly and you can tell they enjoy working there.
google avatar

Karlie C.

Yelp
This is my first time coming here and I LOVE IT! We actually came 2 days in a row lol. The vibes on point both days. Everyone is so friendly. We sat at the bar last night and had Cierra. AMAZING! If you get her you will not be disappointed. The food is just outstanding. I'm not a sandwich person but now I can say I am!

Yelp
A Toast to Excellence: Cheba Hut's Subs Elevate the Game In a world where sandwiches are a dime a dozen, Cheba Hut stands out as a beacon of hope for those seeking a truly exceptional experience. Their "toasted" subs have gained a reputation for excellence, and I was eager to explore the hype surrounding this beloved chain. In this review, I'll dive into the details of my encounter with Cheba Hut, highlighting the standout stars of their menu, including the White Widow and Thai Stick. As I stepped into Cheba Hut, I was immediately struck by the laid-back, welcoming atmosphere. The rustic-chic decor, complete with wooden accents and vibrant colors, created a cozy and inviting environment. The open kitchen added a touch of excitement, allowing patrons to witness the culinary magic unfold. The friendly staff exuded enthusiasm and warmth, making me feel right at home My journey began with the White Widow, a delectable sub featuring tender chicken, crispy bacon, creamy avocado, and melted provolone cheese, all nestled within a crispy baguette. The first bite was nothing short of revelatory. The textures harmonized in perfect symphony, with each component complementing the others in a delightful dance of flavors. The chicken was juicy and well-seasoned, while the bacon added a satisfying crunch. The avocado brought creaminess, and the provolone cheese tied everything together with its rich, velvety texture. Next, I ventured into the realm of the Thai Stick, a vegetarian masterpiece starring grilled tofu, crispy tempeh, shredded carrot, cucumber, cilantro, and spicy Thai peanut sauce, all nestled within a soft, fluffy baguette. This sub was a vibrant explosion of flavors, with each bite delivering a delightful balance of sweet, savory, and spicy notes

Yelp
I really liked their outdoor area You need to order either at the front or the bar, they don't serve you at your table I was underwhelmed by the salad - i thought the portion of meat was small probably what they put on the 4 inch sub and they didn't include the cheese that is on the sandwich. It was covered in croutons which I had ordered the salad so it would be gluten free so that was annoying. I didn't see that listed for salads If you go there just don't order a salad as the sandwiches looked decent
google avatar

Rigo S.

Yelp
Awesome place to hang out and grab a beer! Ordered the Bruce Banner which came with delicious jalapeño cream cheese and pesto (interesting combo but it worked!). My partner ordered the Sensi Kush which was also amazing. It was basically their version of a BLT. I highly recommend this place and will 100% be back.
google avatar

Yelp
As a Philadelphian and growing up with elite sandwiches and hoagies; California hoagies just do not do it. I had the nerve to go here and get a vegan sandwich lmao. I will not be coming back but the customer service was very very nice. My rating is solely due to food, customer service and ambiance was great. As a vegan ... Skip this place!
google avatar

Melissa C.

Yelp
I wasn't too hungry, so we ordered a Nug Kali Mist and side of garlic bread. I had a couple bites of the sandwich and yum! The flavor was there, and the bread was perfectly toasted. The garlic bread was good. It's a hearty portion. You order at the counter, and food is brought out to your table. It wasn't too busy when we were there. Cool spot to come hang out to eat and maybe have a drink at the bar. I believe there's a cornhole set out on the patio as well.

Evan F.

Yelp
Used to go there every other day because of the cheap hash cans and the great people. But they raised the prices and fired all the good bartenders so this place blows now.
google avatar

Kelly W.

Yelp
One of my favorite hangover meals of all time in San Diego. Food comes out within 10-15 minutes, workers are friendly, vibes are super chill, and sandwiches are dank. I always get the white widow and my boyfriend always gets the dank pizza sub. Cheba hut never disappoints. Not pictured - full bar including spiked kool aid ($4) and pickle moonshine.
google avatar

Armani H.

Yelp
Came here on Saturday and they had a $3 craft beer special with a purchase of one of their subs. Got their Buffalo chicken with hot sauce and it was really good and stacked with a lot of chicken and toppings. The vibe here is really chill and the staff here are really welcoming. They have great daily specials all throughout the week so definitely recommend checking out this spot.
google avatar

Donny ..

Yelp
The sandwiches are always great and the bar has excellent drinks. They have a great vibe and the patio is a great place to sit and enjoy your drinks. And your furry friends are allowed to!
google avatar

Yelp
I've loved Cheba growing up in AZ and crave it all the time. Miss having a place with koolaid on tap! The Apollo 13 on garlic herb is my go-to with a specialty rice crispie treat on the side. Service is nice and the store has a good music and interesting decorations
google avatar

Ed P.

Yelp
Great find! See this new home of Cheba Hut! We were very impressed with the friendly staff and Victor cleared our table what a nice man cam over and shared the Cheba story! I enjoyed the G-? 8 " with chips!
google avatar

Han L.

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised. If i ever crave a toasted sub, I'll come back here. The space is nice. However, the server made us follow him back to the register to get sauce. That's some crazy service. Train your employees to deliever sauce to the table.

Mariposa K.

Yelp
8 inch sandwhich was $15, took 35 minutes to make, and was made incorrectly. Waste of time and money when there's so many other places in the area
google avatar

Andrea V.

Yelp
Absolutely love everything about this place. The variety of food, the art, the vibe the employees have, even the names of the meals are clever! Every time I go I try something different and I have not been disappointed yet. My fave one has to be the teriyaki chicken tho, *chefs kiss* I also love that they have different kool aid flavors, def gives me 90s vibe. If you're a fan of the award winning classic movies anchorman, an SD cult classic, be sure to check out the wall art, it's legit.
google avatar

James B.

Yelp
Really cool place.. they good vibes flowing all around. Sandwiches are delicious. They have their own "Stoner" type creation and names for the variety of sandwiches they offer. They have recently moved to a bigger location about a block away from the old one. Service is chill , everyone is friendly or just baked out of their mind. Either way Ill be back!
google avatar

Abel M.

Yelp
New location is lit Jaa jk but seriously yes it's way better than previous location. Much bigger and newer. Hopefully they can survive the curse of this building. Ever since it was constructed no business has ever lasted more than a couple of years. I think this business will last though cuz it already has a following which none of the previous businesses had. This was actually my first time here. I've been coming to the Thai place next to their old location for years and finally decided to give it a shot. The vibe is pot head dazed and confused themed. Jaa. All of the sandwiches are weed themed. I tried the meatball one and it was pretty good.
google avatar

Brad B.

Yelp
Welp, I've enjoyed Cheba Hut since moving to the neighborhood and thought that it was great just the way it was. Well, if you haven't been in a while don't head to the tiny location that they were located in for years as they've taken over the Black Market Brewery location (thank God) and they're bigger and better than ever. Sometimes expansion is a killer for businesses but that is not the case here as they're bumpin' and busy! A huge full-bar, tons of seating, an outdoor patio, and TVs mounted around the restaurant to watch our Padres break our collective hearts. Feel free to order as you walk in or if you're sitting at the bar they'll take your order there. The sandwiches come out faster than they did at the old location but are still a bit slow for sandwiches - enjoy a drink, why don't cha? Speaking of drinks, while I'm not a beer drinker the PBRs are only $2.00 and this review risks that news to bleed into the hipster streets of North Park and then we're all doomed. That's a chance I'll take to support this place as the expansion is the best thing that's happened to the neighborhood in quite some time. Who knows, maybe they'll be taking over the old Rite Aid across the street at this pace of success and expansion!

Yelp
Amazing for some delicious sandwich in San Diego. I have been coming to this location for 4 years and will say they never disappointed me. The food is always on point and have great customer service. I usually place my order over the phone and eat at my work. Definitely the best and always highly comes down to be recommended to my friends and family. Jeff is a great employee there wanted to recognize him for his hard work. The vibe here is mellow and relaxing with very nice themes they put on their walls. See you again Cheba hut
google avatar

Cindy L.

Yelp
Only place I go for veggie subs. Endless choices and they taste delicious. I'm not vegetarian but I always come for the griefo which comes with cream cheese. I use to come here at the old location which is in the same plaza but now at the new building, there is room for a full bar and let me tell you, the staff knows how to make drinks. Would come here on Fridays for their hash cans which is only $6. It's pretty much a AMF with red bull. It's very chill and a good place to hang put with friends but it can get packed later in the night and there not that much parking on their lot
google avatar

Stewart L.

Yelp
This is the best sandwich place I've ever been to. Their bread is spectacular. It was so good we had lunch then dinner our last night in town, got up in the morning and went back for breakfast. It really is that good.
google avatar

James D.

Yelp
Ordered four sandwiches to go on 3/3/2024, including turkey, tuna melt, and pineapple/ham. In online ordering, you're asked if you want mayo/mustard. I said yes to some of the sandwiches. When we opened our sandwiches, we had a hard time telling what was what because there was so much mayo and mustard just slopped on top of the sandwiches. Not only did each of the sandwiches look unappetizing, it made for a gooey mess, and forget trying to save half of the sandwich for another meal, as it was already too mushy and would only get worse. We've eaten here a couple of times but I would definitely not recommend any additional condiments when you order from here. Doubt we'll be back (and it wasn't cheap).

Sam T.

Yelp
Use to love eating here but I really can't justify paying $16 for a sandwich that has 1 slice of meat per side. I ordered the Bruce banner pinner and got 1 piece of salami and 1 piece of roast beef on each side. If I wanted bread with cream cheese I would've went to Einstein bagels. Food is still good as ever but I just feel like they are getting greedy.
google avatar

Nicolas J.

Yelp
Cheba hut has gotten my love at so many locations I've lost count lol. The sandwiches are good. The service is pretty on point. The ambience of stoner puns and sandwiches that will make you ask if it's medicated (it's not I promise lol) So good you'll fell intoxicated tho after these sandwiches :)
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
I'd give this place 2.5 stars. Not sure why the hype- the sandwiches didn't look filling and when I asked for black olives, they only added 4 sliced ones and requested extra tomato but didn't only had 2 slices. It was dry and found this place to be stingy in putting lots of veggies. I received deli sandwiches that were more filling from Subway, Ralph's and Sprouts. Bread was soft but that's it. Didn't win over my other SD favorites enough to return back.

Steph N.

Yelp
Came here today for 2 sandwiches and the worker (possibly named Griffith - i dont know if they even gave me the correct name) didnt even put my order in. After 25 minutes of waiting, I asked them how much longer do I have to wait and thats when they told me. Not trying to be mean but Griffith seemed to be pretty baked.. he was abnormally slow on when putting our orders .. and if this turns out to be true, that is never okay. not coming again.

Yelp
Super Lemon Haze on Garlic Bread... BUSSIN' omg. Chef put their foot in that mess. Props

Yelp
Nestled in the heart of SDSU's bustling neighborhood, CHeBA Hut Toasted Subs is the vibrant hangout spot we've all been waiting for. Every bite of their scrumptious sandwiches promises a delightful dance of flavors, making them a staple for anyone looking for a culinary trip without leaving the block. The service? Quick, friendly, and attentive. But it's not just about subs. The full bar stands ready to quench any thirst, while their unique offering of Kool Aid adds a nostalgic touch that many will appreciate. And for those with a sweet tooth, their dessert munchies are the cherry on top. Game enthusiasts can relive the golden age with their arcade machine, and if you're looking to catch the Padres in action or immerse in college games, their TVs got you covered. In essence, CHeBA Hut isn't just a sandwich spot; it's an experience. Whether you're grabbing a bite, sipping a drink, or just chilling with friends, it's a haven in the SDSU neighborhood. Two toasted thumbs up!

Yelp
Not all sandwich places are the same. Some are better than others. Cheba Hut Toasted Subs is definitely one of the better sandwich places around. Taking the first bite. I was hooked. The Chronic (BBQ roast beef) sandwich is delicious. The inside decor of Cheba Hut reminds me of a old school record store. With stickers and posters of current and past rock bands. There is also a celebration of Marijuana culture here with sandwiches named after pot references. As is also the name of the sandwich place. Overall a unique sandwich place with amazing tasting subs. Timely service and moderately priced food. Support local businesses especially the good ones. Cheba Hut Toasted Subs is great. Eat here.

Dan A.

Yelp
$21 for a standard turkey sub? Nothing added or extra. No chips or drink either. I do like the sandwiches, but for $21 the sandwiches aren't THAT good. It's not Kat'z deli.
google avatar

Gregory G.

Yelp
This spot is perfect for anyone that loves Will Ferrel's classic knee-slapped, Anchorman. They have an array of subs with diff names to reference strains or other paraphernalia. I had the teriyaki sub and a soda fountain, was NOT disappointed. The cashier was very helpful and recommended my girls order which she also liked. Very chill place and not packed but busy when we went.
google avatar

Yanin G.

Yelp
Very big and clean location . They have a variety of subs to pick from . Staff is very friendly and prices are decent ! Great place to have lunch with friends or family .
google avatar

Frank J.

Yelp
Atmosphere, vibe, menu service. New venue with weekly live tunes. Awesome college scene.
google avatar

Kyra M.

Yelp
Some of the very best sandwiches in town! They are known for their hot sandwiches, I always get the atomic bomb which is a meatball sub. Great to go but if you have the time to eat there I would high recommend it as it is the best tasting fresh and hot. You walk up and order and can sit anywhere and they will bring it to your table so very fast and efficient. They also serve a lot of craft beers on tap and even have a tap pour you can get at the table that fits 4-5 beers. This is always our go to spot for a quick lunch! The food is also very reasonably priced.
google avatar

Hanafi M.

Yelp
2 stars, easy parking, and friendly staff. And it stops there. The "Roast Beef" is the cheap kind. Think Subway.
google avatar

Grateful A.

Yelp
The girl who took my order was nice and friendly but a lot of things were messed up on my order and on my huge sub there was only 2 pieces of under cooked bacon. The pretzels didn't come with cheese sauce. I asked for an item on the side and they still put it in my sand which. Will not return to this location :(

Debbi B.

Yelp
Love this place, staff is friendly, food always is terrific and consistent. A must try.
google avatar

Juliet M.

Yelp
Always an amazing experience and great vibe. Numerous posters for upcoming bands and local events plastered on the doors and walls . Not to mention a super fantastic decor.
