Checco er Carrettiere - Review - Trastevere - Rome - The Infatuation

"“Carrettiere means the chariot that would bring fresh produce to the area. They are a little tucked away in Trastevere. A lot of tourists end up going there by chance, but it’s run by three generations of Roman women and nonnas. There are grandkids running around. The type of dishes they serve are very Roman. A mammone would love it there because they are very Roman. They don’t even speak Italian, they speak Roman. I would go there and meet Stephania, the third-generation who inherited it from her dad.” We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Team Infatuation

We loved the food. Our waiter was super funny and generous. This restaurant was recommended to us by an Italian friend who works in hospitality and we were pleased by our experience.

Absolutely loved this place! We were given the name of the restaurant by our taxi driver. Such a great little area with lots of people and little restaurants. Checco er Carettiere did not disappoint. Atmosphere was wonderful, staff was excellent (especially Gustava) and the food was excellent! Went back a second night, they make you feel like family <3

So here’s the deal: the Romans conquered half the known world but somehow forgot to conquer dessert. Pizza? Bellissima. Pasta? Divine. But pastry? Ehh. Enter the maritozzi, Rome’s answer to we had cream and bread and did our best. Checco, bless their eternal-city soul, serves up this ancient donut-meets-carb-cloud situation stuffed with what can only be described as barely-sweet whipped cream. I loved it, mostly because my sweet tooth is more of a salt craving. My tour group? They looked at it like it had just insulted their grandmother. Still, when in Rome, try the maritozzi. If not for the taste, then for the story. It’s weird. It’s charming. It’s Roman. Now, Checco has a large array of sweet goodness so after your maritozzi experience, sink your sweet tooth into other goodies.

This was our favorite dinner in Rome! The carbonara was unmatched, so delicious. Absolutely everything was amazing from the authentic atmosphere, excellent service, and delicious food. We also ordered a bottle of Chianti Classico Riserva which was phenomenal. Highly recommend this place during your trip to Rome.

This was one of our favorite meals in Italy. We booked a reservation for lunch, arrived, and were promptly seated. The place started filling up soon after. The food was fantastic and after we finished, the owner swung by to say hello and offered us a free sample of a dish we asked about. She was remarkably warm. We did not hear another word of English spoken here, while the area outside was swarming with Americans (we are also Americans -- love y'all, but we are a lot!). This is definitely not a "tourist trap!" We felt like we had found a true authentic experience, though we did note that the fried artichokes were on the menu even though it wasn't the season. We appreciated that because we wanted to try them. Highly recommended!

Google
We live in Rome for over a month - we have some of the saltiest dishes here: carbonara and oxtail stew is crazily SALTY. The taste is good but you can obviously tell that something went wrong. It is often fully booked and is a restaurant with long history, yes, but you have a lot more better choices around the area given the price that you are paying for. All the bad reviews come with reasons. The bread (*2) is 12 euros.

Google
Nice authentic restaurant in Trastevere for dinner. The setting was great and the food was good too. I would recommend skipping their cocktail menu and ordering a glass of wine instead as the flavours were underwhelming.

Google
Great authentic Italian Restaurant which sometimes has live music. Friday night was really great and the food, staff entertainment absolutely fantastic. Would definitely recommend this place for authentic food 👌 but it pays to reserve a table in advance as I did .

Yelp
First of all there is no place better in Rome for a great meal than in Trastevere. And IMHO there is no place better in Trastevere than Checco Er Carrettiere. This place has been around for ages and is a classic dining experience. No one is outside hawking to get you to come in, a definite sign to not go in. We made reservations and were immediately welcomed and brought to our table. Nick our server has been there for years and was extremely accommodating and offered suggestions. We started with sparkling water and a moderately priced bottle of Chianti Reserva. For appy we had the fried artichokes and fried batter dippped stuffed zucchini flowers. Unlike the Jewish style I've had before these were crispy yet the heart was cooked tender. My wife had the Caico e Pepe and I had to have the Carbonara. They were both amazing and creamy. For our Secondi we had the Stewed Oxtails in sauce and the Veal Scaloppine Al Marsala. Fall off the bone delicious. Were took our time and spaced out the courses, we wanted to savor the delicious meal and the experience and Nick was happy to let us sit and enjoy. Checco was filled with locals sitting in large groups enjoying their meals and company. This is a classy yet laid back restaurant with a ton of history and great food.

Yelp
This place has incredible traditional appetizers, Roman food I've never even heard of, this was the interesting part of the menu. When it came to my main dish it was inedible. The lamb was full of bone and cartilage had no meet... the only reason why I'm leaving 2 stars is because Cristiano was a generous server on task and very helpful, and the appetizers where interesting and pleasant to eat. The ambiance is quite cool and quite in a very youthful and beautiful part of Roma.

Yelp
This place is to die for! Everything that I put into my mouth was incredible. Their carafe of the house wine was affordable and delicious. The lightly fried calamari was so fresh. The meatballs were super unique. Don't even get me started on the carbonara. It was perfectly al dente, with the most crispy bacon I could eat here until I pop. The live music during dinner really set the vibe on the patio. Our waiter was very sweet. I will be back every time I visit Rome, for sure.

Yelp
The food was OK. Servers seemed remote and not particularly welcoming. I ordered shrimp scampi pasta but did not find any shrimp. Perhaps it was an off night. Friends of ours really enjoyed this restaurant when they were in Rome.

Yelp
Absolute perfezione! My husband and I loved every minute of this dining experience. We arrived via taxi and were dropped off about 400 feet away near a street market. We arrived at the hotel and were greeted by the maître d' (who spoke English). We had a reservation that we booked through their website. We were shown to a table that had our name on it. Our server and three other helpers all spoke English. They were incredibly helpful. The food is amazing. We had carbonara and fettuccine. The house red is delicious. The dessert selection was abundant. We selected an eggnog cake (because my husband will eat anything with the word eggnog in it, any time of year) and a Crème Caramel (similar to flan). All of it was perfect. We were there for a little over 2 hours. When we finished, we walked through the street market and enjoyed a park concert by two musicians. I highly recommend anyone in Rome visit this restaurant.

Yelp
A total wow! The outdoor garden area was perfect. The fried artichokes were amazing..so different from the Roman recipe.. The pasta dishes were outstanding. One of the best restaurants in Rome

Yelp
Choosing this place ruined my wedding elopement dinner. The ambiance was beautiful but our food did not arrive for 2 HOURS. Yes, it was really that long before a first course. When the first course finally came, the pasta was clearly rushed as it was way too Al dente. The food was not flavorful but drowned in oil. The second course came 5 minutes after the first. They clearly forgot about us and then rushed everything out. I felt sick from not eating anything for so long. The pasta was drowning in sauce and not in a good way. This is my third trip to Rome. I'm a seasoned traveler who doesn't expect everything to be perfect or exactly like the US. This was just awful. I hope to look back and laugh at how bad this was. Obviously never coming back when I'm in Rome again.

Yelp
Too many Americans and too few Italians should have been a warning sign. Large, decent ambiance, good service. Food was average. Pasta a matriciana seemed undercooked; fish overcooked. Anchovy appetizer good.

Yelp
What a great find! After being in Rome for 3 days and finding only tourist crappy good I was lucky to get this place recommended. This was a great find. The food was great and the restaurant was very lively.

Yelp
loved the food here! a very authentic italian restaurant with great ambience and lovely service. connected to a fantastic gelateria that also served amazing pastries. definitely recommend it if you're looking for a great, true to the culture, italian experience, come here!!!

Yelp
a Trastevere tradition, going back to the early 1900's one of the most traditional of the old-fashioned Trastevere Restaurants you really feel the history of the place, and know you've arrived someplace special a wide selection of traditional Roman pastas, typical Roman meat dishes like veal piccata or osso buco; and classic Roman desserts Limited outdoor dining on a covered patio in the back. Reservations suggested especially during busy dates and weekends.

Yelp
We had an amazing late afternoon lunch here with Cacio de Pepe and Liguine with claims. AWESOME

Yelp
This place is so good! Came here as a recommendation from our tour guide who lives in Rome. The food and service is amazing. Everything is so fresh. I got the home made pasta with wild mushrooms and it was so rich and delicious. The atmoshphere is warm and cozy and I felt like family. Had the most amazing bubbly white wine for only 16 euro and shared a tiramisu with my friend. Great experience!

Yelp
This place will both delight and frustrate you if you are accustomed to attentive service. Part of the joy and frustration of eating in Italy is the slow service - considered normal. Food was above average, but it took waving down three servers before we finally got our bill. Not the end of the world, but just prepare yourself ahead of time to go slow here.

Yelp
My born and raised Roman friend and tour guide brought me here for dinner on my second night in the city. Very authentic and cozy in the Trastevere section of Rome. A bit of a walk, and certainly not a touristy restaurant. Authentic Roman cuisine. The pasta fagioli was superb, as was the fish assortment and grilled vegetables. The restaurant is quite nostalgic, with pictures from the past adorning the walls. Very nice service and atmosphere.

Yelp
We stumbled upon this cafe on our first morning in Trastevere and it became our breakfast ritual for the duration of our time in Roma. Traveling with a 2-year old is never easy, but the staff here was very accommodating and had plenty of breakfast pastry options to keep us all happy. We were the only foreigners in here every morning we stopped by, and enjoyed seeing Romans getting their days started. Solid cappuccino and delicious breakfast breads especially the honey cornetto (an Italian-style croissant relative) that our son could not get enough of! Their desserts and cakes looked amazing, but sadly we didn't make it back in the evenings to try them out. Hopefully next time!

Yelp
This is such an unassuming restaurant but oh so delicious. A little hard to find in the Trastevere section of Rome. I think this section of Rome is known as referred to as the "Jewish ghetto". So not the typical tourist trap very authentic. Don't think about order about ordering spaghetti and meatballs. That's not authentic!
google avatar

Maria Claudia G.

Yelp
Great place to visit if you're in Trastevere. Very italian. Attention was great and so was the service. Tried the carbonara, very good. Very roman if you like the roman cucine this is def a place worth visiting. No need to make reservation

Yelp
I would say 3.5 stars if yelp had the half star scale. Service was excellent, welcoming ambiance. Caccio Pepe left a lot to be desired. Not enough pepper and extremely cheesey. Noodles were cooked well but not enough to overcome the sauce. Veal piccata was fresh, light and good. Came with a side of spinach. Not a bad meal, but not telling all my friends about it.

Yelp
If you ever visit Rome and want to try something authentically Italian without getting caught in the tourist trap, I highly recommend this place. It's located in the quaint area of Trastevere. The waiters and waitresses don't speak really good English (most Italians don't speak English anyways) so ordering could be a challenge. I recommend googling the menu and food names do get a picture of what they look like without trying. We had the pasta with clams dish and the oxtail (which is a hit and a must try dish in Rome)!

Yelp
Nice authentic and classic Roman restaurant with great tradition very well expressed through the decor, the service and the food! This is a restaurant where Italians eat and we were very glad to have been there!

Yelp
Great meal, great wine, great staff, great location, great in-door, great out-door. A great classic Italian!

Yelp
This was the WORST dinner we have had in Rome, if not ever! It doesn't even deserve one star. It received glowing reviews by Michelin-starred chef, Anthony Genovese of Il Pagliaccio, in the article on Bloomberg.com dated Feb 2019 entitled, "The best pastas in Rome by Top Chefs." He couldn't have been farther from the truth. I wonder what that says about him as a chef! I wanted to have a special dinner with my two daughters in Rome and this couldn't have been more disappointing! We started with a Jewish artichoke which was ok. We've had this dish at other restaurants during our vacation and it was ten times better. My daughters ordered pasta which was ok, not great, and I picked a big beautiful piece of Dover sole which was salty and the way it was prepared was barely edible. We ordered glasses of wine since one daughter likes red and the other white. They were barely drinkable. I complained about the white so the waiter brought us a decent 1/2 bottle of Pinot Grigio. The waiter was not helpful and could care less making it a nice experience for us. Do yourself a favor. Do not patron this restaurant.

Yelp
We wanted a traditional Roman meal and we certainly got one! We had the consume soup which was delicious and the Frito misto to start, both were very good. My wife had spaghetti pomodoro which she enjoyed very much. I ordered the Osso Bucco and felt the veal was a little tough. The wine, bread, ambiance and service were all good however no complaints here. This is definitely not a tourist spot and it's off any main roads. Seems like only those that know a local fins out about it. Either way, if local traditional Roman food is what you want, this is your spot!

Yelp
Local, local, local spot in the heart of Trastevere. Excellent homemade pasta and great wine selection. They have a gorgeous garden area in the back. A great value.

Yelp
This was fabulous food; from the rustic authentic pasta with simply Tomato & basil to the Fettucine Carbonara. The desert was a perfect Italian Chocolate cake with a filling of chocolate mouse. The after dinner Limoncello was a lovely finish to a terrific meal. I would like to go back soon, but I live in the U.S.A.

Yelp
We stayed at an apartment nearby and this was our daily stop for espresso, latte's and great little quiches... so fresh and delicious. I had originally planned to visit a few coffee bars for breakfast during our stay but this was so fantastic we went everyday of our trip. They also serve fresh made juices and everyone was very friendly. Thanks for making us feel so welcome!

Yelp
One of the Best Amatriciana in Rome. Try also il carciofo alla giudea! At the place they offer you complimentary cookies (pastries) when you ask the bill. If you don't ask you can stay there forever. To notice that entering on the right you have a cheaper ( but same food) concept of the restaurant, going straight you have ther traditional restaurant.

Will K.

Yelp
This resturaunt was quite incredible, which you would not think from the number of stars on Yelp, but it actually was very very good. All of the things we had were quite good, and we'll prepared and served.

Yelp
Outstanding meal of classic roman cuisine and fresh fish. Friendly staff and excellent food make this a winner. The evening I was here the restaurant was filled with Italians, a good sign in my book. The restaurant feels old fashioned because it is, it's not fake it really is an authentic Roman classic.

Yelp
Recently returned from a wonderful 2 week vacation around Italy. When we were in Rome, our twin 16-year old boys had gelato EVERY night. Much of the gelato we tasted around Rome was somewhat similar. This place, on the other hand, was quite unique. I can easily say this was the absolute best gelato we tasted during our entire trip. I HIGHLY recommend the cherry gelatto. Not completely sure yet it appeared the cherries were brandied. WOW. Also, check out the other desserts. Also, very good.

Yelp
We have a gear meal, friendly service. The entrance is a bit rough but the inner dining room is much nicer and they have a lovely garden.

Javier M.

Yelp
extremely average. food not so good, area even worse. could not recommend this place

Bob C.

Yelp
Make sure you have lots of time when eating at this restaurant. The service is slower than molasses in January (and I'm from Minnesota). Having asked twice for my bill, I finally, after 45 minutes of waiting, said I was leaving and gave them one last opportunity to take my money. They obliged, but acted like they were doing me a huge favor. As for the food: they only get a second star from me in this review because the starter was extraordinary. The main course could only charitably be described as mediocre, and took forever to arrive. When I was shown a dessert menu, I noticed that that menu had some hand written dinner options included (unlike the menu I ordered from) and would have much better suited my tastes had the option presented itself. The wine I ordered was out of stock, but they had a similar one they were happy to sell me which was 9euros more expensive. All in all, I'd steer clear of this address.
