Checkerboard Pizza

Friends around town recommended Checkerboard Pizza knowing of my intense love of NY style pizza. It wasn't exactly convenient location wise, but I wanted to try it and was delighted to find Checkerboard on GrubHub. One order and I was absolutely hooked. This stuff is stellar, everything about it is perfect and as close as you're bound to get to NYC pizza west of Schenectady. Ok yeah pizza delivery, I mean the box doesn't do the pie any favors, right? And since I'm a full 30 minute drive from the shop, reheating was always needed. Still, the best pizza I've had in years. After several months of happily paying the premium for delivery, I finally made the trip out to the shop with friends from out of town. What a fun setup. Sure it's a storefront pizza shop, no seating, no ambiance, but no worries because you have plenty of seating and great beer options just steps away, along with food carts to satisfy every single one of your picky guests' whims. And ice cream right next door! Ultimately though the star of the show is the owner who loves making these delicious pies. Pretty old school food guy, you can really tell by watching him make the pies in the back that this is a passion. I also read through some of these reviews and elsewhere and he really tries to ensure a great experience for everyone, which I truly appreciate. Service was fast and prices are reasonable for the excellent quality. My only gripe is that there's not a shop in my neighborhood, but truly worth the extra effort.

This place is amazing. Im obsessed with their crust and this olive oil pickled veggies thing. I got the Brooklyn pizza no honey and added fresh basil. So delicious!

I'm not the biggest fan of New York style pizza for one big reason, usually just lacking flavor. This pizza was good, cooked properly with a crispy undercarriage but overall just lacking flavor in the crust, sauce and cheese. I had a higher expectation since this was from Ken Forkish.

That’s Delicious! I ordered a pepperoni and sausage 18” pizza and an icy cola. The pie was thin and crispy with a thoughtful ratio of ingredients. The pizza was cooked in a fancy oven that the baker was generous enough to give me a tour of. He was also very patient with all of my questions. Cooked to perfection with the wonder of modern technology! I will be making a point of stopping anytime I’m on my way to the mountain or up to the Gorge for a show. I’m glad that I saved some room for a cone from the ice cream place next door. They have their own homemade recipe soft serve that was super creamy.

First time trying this place. Went asked for any vegan options. Cook in back said yes we do we got vegan sausage pepperoni and cheese. I said cool I take that all of it. He said ok the kid running the front keyed in something else. I would have called but didn't see a number on the Google listing. Kid was hopped up on something. 50 buck for basically cheese and a couple artichokes. More than disappointed 😞

Ordered from a third party… I would have taken a picture but we ate it too fast!! Crust was delicious, great flavor!! Sauce and cheese was a perfect balance!! Will definitely be our new go to place!

I ordered multiple pizzas from Clint at checkerboard Pizza and he was so easy to work with, helpful and kind! Our pizzas were ready right on time! The service from all the workers was incredible and the pizzas were delicious, a huge crowd pleaser!

Lots of places to sit outdoors and indoors at the Brewery. This pizza is amazing! 6 different kinds on display. The pizza has a wonderful thin crust with the perfect chew. Not many places around with this thin new york style slice, or ones that do pizza by the slice in general. I would recommend this pizza to anyone!

One Bite Everyone Knows The Rules! I stopped by today and grabbed a slice of cheese and pepperoni. The pizza has a great undercarriage and the crust has a great crunch. The cheese blend is tasty and the sauce is mild and not spicy. Overall, I really like this NY-style pizza. I would give this a 7.8 out of 10. Thank you Checkerboard!

Owner is completely unhinged. Go at your own peril. One of his coworkers took my friends order and he indicated she didnt need to reheat the pizza in the back, he was fine with it as it had just come out the oven recently. The owner lashed out and said they do what they want and not to tell him how to run his business....He then replied to my negative review on google with slander saying i harassed his staff. Absolute clown.

Came to Checkerboard Pizza for the first time today and it was a great experience. Enjoyed their pepperoni pizza with peppers and bottled spring water outside. The crust was amazing and the pizza was very flavorful. Highly recommend coming here when visiting Troutdale!

Good pizza terrible service. I love the tropical pizza. Unfortunately the service is and always has been unfriendly. After many times getting a slice of tropical, we were told they won't do it by the slice. We had to get a whole pizza. They were out of 12 inch dough so we had to do the 18 inch. Then we were told they would only do half tropical and either cheese or Pepperoni, no other pizza "matched". Very rude.

Great pizza, cool staff, and again, great pizza. New regular spot for pizza in this area.

The food is soooo good. I'm very picky about genuinely good pizza. And this place HITS THE SPOT! It's perfect crispy and always tastes fresh. The only downside is that it's pretty expensive. The service from the cashier wasn't great but the chef/pizza maker was incredibly sweet. It's super cute out side too and a great place to go in the summer. They also have a great rotation of pizzas you can buy by the slice!

Fresh ingredients, perfect char on the thin crust. Go to when you have a pizza craving.

VERY RUDE. customer service could be better. my husband went to go pick a few slices up and when he walked in the guy taking his order demanded that my husband got off the phone beau se he had it up to his hear.. pizza is good just wish ppl were nicer:(

Great New York style pizza made with high quality ingredients. It's our go-to pizza cafe now even though it's a bit of a drive. Clint and his helpers always provide excellent service. We've had many pizzas from here and have never been disappointed. Nothing in Troutdale or Gresham even comes close. Definitely worth a try. Grab a beer at Wayfinder brew pub next door to go with the pizza.
