Where to Eat in La Mesa | Eater San Diego

"Don’t bypass this deli and liquor store combo because the fresh made sandwiches are a favorite of locals to grab a bite. There are the usual options like Italian submarines and meatball subs but pause to study the extensive menu for hidden gems like the Greek chicken. It’s a hot sandwich featuring marinated chicken, provolone and feta cheeses, black olives, cucumbers and garlic on a French roll." - darlene-horn

Came here after hiking at cowles mountain. So I was super hungry. Me and my buddy got 2 sandwiches each ! I got the New Yorker and it was so delicious. 3 meats ! Roast beef, pastrami, & corned beef ! My buddy got the chipotle Baja which he loved ! Then I ordered TBAC ( turkey, bacon, avocado, & cheese ). I only ate half bc I was full, so amazing ! I saved the other half for later. The other half tasted so amazing at home !! My buddy’s second sandwich was the turkey Baja and he said that was his favorite out of the 2. This spot is located inside of a liquor store where you can make one stop and get everything you need! You don’t have to take the food to go you can eat there ! The service was great and the store was clean which is always a plus ! Definitely coming back !

Google
This is one of the best sandwiches I have ever had. Before I even finished it, I was already looking at the menu of what I am going to get next time. Went in to place the order, being it was my first time, and they were very quick.. I ordered the Jack Hammer on Rye, which is very delicious. This will be my go-to lunch spot. There was so much meat on the sandwiches and came with a small side of potato salad or macaroni salad. Great quality and friendly service. . Update. Ordered The Godfather (hot) very very good as well 10/10.

Google
Best sandwiches in town but definitely not worth the huge increase in price. The new owners came in and jacked up the price big time. An 8-10 dollar increase. I grew up coming here since the late 80s early 90s.The Deli staff are amazing but not so much the store staff. They even have sandwiches at 20 dollars. Unbelievable what a shame.

Google
Been coming here for over 10 years. I'm always nice, always friendly and an all around good customer. My friend picked up the wrong bottle of whiskey, which I would have kept, had it not been extremely overpriced by 40+ dollars. I called immediately and they reluctantly told me I could return it. It took me a couple days to get in there. When I arrived, reciept in hand I had to re-explain that the return had been authorized. I then suffered being chastised by the kid at the counter, then I listened to a long call with an owner which resulted in them shorting my refund by $7.85. I said that was unacceptable and wanted the full promised refund. Then I had to listen to another long call while a line formed and the kid meandered around the store. I very calmly reiterated that I didn't understand what the issue was as this had already been approved. They know me, I am in there all the time and they said as much. Now is where the one star reviews comes in. The kid at the counter said "Don't give me attitude bro" I said I am not giving you attitude this was already approved and you're shorting me. I said this calmly, I was not being loud or rude at all. He then repeated himself loudly and it was very odd, accusing me of having an attitude, telling me what I am doing by returning the alcohol is illegal and that I waited a couple days to bring in the return. Then he dropped my 7.85 on the counter with an attitude. I told him the attitude was that I would not do business there anymore. Why on earth he would try to antagonize me over such pettyness is beyond me. Talk about undeserved disrespect I am twice over his elder and a good customer and I was not disrespectful toward him at all. This, plus the extreme price hike for the deli is why I won't be doing business there anymore. The Supermarket Next door has just as good a selection of alcohol and it's a lot cheaper as does windmill farms right down the road. What a shame.

Google
Delicious, fresh, and high quality sandwiches that are packed with meat. My favorites are The Cheers Combo, The Charger, and The Californian. The liquor store also is well stocked with a variety of drinks and snack options. The people who work here are very friendly.

Google
Crazy good sandwiches that will make you go back for more. The macaroni salad was among the best I've ever had, very smooth without being spicy. A year later and it's still the best sandwich around. Corned beef on Rye today and it was amazing!

Google
This deli in fact does have the cheers t show nostalgic feel to it. Stepping in feels that nostalgic 80's touch to it, the sandwiches are thick and amazing- but my favorite part is the service. The employees aren't your basic cranky teenage subway servers, these adults are proud of their jobs. They're mothers, fathers, grandparents. The sandwiches taste like their made from home and are handled with care. This deli is a hidden gem of San Diego.

Guy L.

Google
There Italian sandwich was the worst Italian I've ever had. I had the new Yorker which was good but won't get the Italian again. I think they used miracle whip on it.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem. "IYKYK". I have only eaten here once while on the way to mission trails but will definitely be back. The sandwich is huge!! Service was fairly quick and well packaged for takeout.

Yelp
I was running errands on Saturday and needed a bite to eat as I wouldn't be home for a while. I found Cheers on Yelp and decided to give them a try. Cheers is a liquor store with a deli. There are a few tables outside and a couple of small tables near the deli counter. I had already decided on my order. There wasn't much of a line, though it looked as though the staff was busy making online or phone orders. I ordered pretty quickly. Maybe they were busy, but I didn't find anyone to be terribly friendly. I was then told that I could grab my drink from the store and to pay for my order at the main checkout counter. I walked over to pick up a bottle of water and then waited in line to pay. I added 15% tip, not realizing that I was also tipping on the water, which I hadn't intended. Somehow the $12.99 salad, bottle of water, and tip plus tax totaled $20.37. I remember thinking it seemed pricey, but didn't pay much attention at the time. The salad itself was very good and was enough for two meals. I thought they were generous with the portions of chicken, and there were lots of other veggies. There were a lot of other salad and sandwich items on the menu that sounded very good as well. I would definitely stop by Cheers again in the future if I were to find myself in the area, but I would pay close attention to the price list and the charges.

Yelp
Nothing hits like the local deli -- the gyro is spot on and that ham / turkey & mustard sandwich is deli perfection.

Yelp
Great place get your delicious sub and booze in one stop. Super clean, fast service and friendly staff.

Yelp
The customer service is always amazing!! Everyone says hello/Goodmorning and always helpful. Food is delicious, HUGE sandwiches at a good price. They also have a great selection of snacks/ liquors/ seltzers/ health foods. Definitely check them out

Yelp
Cheers has an amazing deli with killer sandwiches. They also have one of the best liquor selections around and they always support the local San Diego brands.

Yelp
I've been going here since I've been a kid, anywhere from getting sandwiches before the SDSU games to grabbing them for fishing trips, and it's still BOMB 15 years later. I usually get the T.B.A.C (Turkey, Bacon, Avocado, Cheese), and they always LOAD on the meat! Super tasty, fresh, and well-priced. All employees are nice and seem happy to have your business. They also have a good beer/wine/liquor selection too.

Robert Q.

Yelp
I'm not sure what changed in the last 6-7 months but the sandwiches weigh considerably less now that they did several months ago. One sandwich would give me two meals, not anymore. Last week was my third time being disappointed with the sandwich and I've been ordering from here since 2003.

Yelp
5/5 - The sandwiches were big (lots of meat!!), great prices, and SO much to choose from. This sandwich shop/deli is located inside the liquor store - so its a no frills place. They are located in a strip mall with ample parking. The service was fine, we had to wait about 10 minutes but that's because they had lots of to-go orders ahead of us. Cheers deli did not disappoint at all. I had a great experience and am looking forward to coming back!

Yelp
I'm ready to spring into some hikes again!! This hidden gem of a sandwich shop is located inside of a liquor store down the street from Cowles Mountain. As soon as you walk in you automatically recognize a delicious deli aroma. I added extra ham, cuz I like it thiiiick. Super highly recommend the potato salad, out of sight!! The prices aren't too bad, and the line isn't usually all that bad either. So if you're going for a hike, and you're ready to chill out with a beer and a sandwich, this is the place!! The service was fantastic by the way, very helpful employees, very knowledgeable and more than willing to help with your order. Whether you are going for a hike before or after your meal, this is the place next to Cowles mountain!!

Selena H.

Yelp
Be careful when ordering vegan. It specifically says on menu if you want to make a vegetarian sandwich -vegan, JUST replace with hummus and I told the cashier that directly. they still put mayo, (and even mustard without me asking for it.) My 2 year old daughter and I are vegan and ate a good amount before realizing! They may not understand what vegan is.

Robert R.

Yelp
So I get that they really mark up their liquor...way more than say a Bevmo or Total Wine. BUT on top of that they hit with a 4% surcharge if you use a credit card. I mean does anyone still actually pay with cash. They also hit with a tip screen when you pay with a CC. Again, is anyone tipping when they buy a six pack... Also, the employees are condescending and rude.

Ryan F.

Yelp
Best sandwiches in San Diego!!!! Prove me wrong. You need to unhinge your jaw to take a bite and they are always fresh. Do yourself a favor and give them a try!!

Yelp

Yelp
One of our family's favorite delicatessens in all of San Diego. Every sandwich on the menu is delightful, and reminds me of the neighborhood delis my family frequented when I was young. 5-star service every time!

Christina C.

Yelp
Employees are very rude no hello how are you and they're on their cells phones making personal calls while ring up a customer.

Yelp
**May 2023: Saturday Evening Visit** My friend and I weren't really hungry but we needed some sustenance for the evening. Many restaurants in Lakeside were closed so we figured we could order a few sandwiches to take to the airbnb and eat when we were hungry. Cheers is located into a liquor store and while a sando counter doesn't usually come to mind when I think of a liquor store I'm so glad that we visited. There's a large variety of sandos and my friend and I each order a sandwich to split. He did the Godfather ($11.99) which includes all Italian meats, cheese and Italian dressing and I chose the T.B.A.C ($12.99) which is a turkey breast sando with bacon avocado slices, and cheese. All sandos come with mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato and red onions unless otherwise instructed. Between the two I preferred the T.B.A.C and they gave a LOT of turkey. It was a very filling meal and I had leftovers for the following day. I enjoyed it!

Yelp
Best roast beef I've had in a really long time and it's at a liquor store. Really, seriously good and good crusty bread. Wish they did french dips with au jus. I'll be back to try more but I might just keep getting the chainsaw.

Yelp
Best sandwich and best service , super fresh and the put lots of meat , very generous

John W.

Yelp
Incredible sandwiches, super friendly staff and they bust out sandwiches so quickly. Endless options if chips, drinks, salads, etc and always a clean and welcoming environment. Turkey Bacon Avo is my favorite!

Peter L.

Yelp
Horrible customer service. Stated sandwich was being made but order was never completed

Yelp
Already planning what I'll order next! Liquor store deli's are the best. The service was amazing, from everyone. Witnessed several people come in and pick up their orders. Our food was ready pretty quickly. The menu is huge! Something for everyone. 1000000% will keep coming back. The portion is better than decent. And it comes with a side, all wrapped in plastic, and a smile.

Yelp
Came a few times just to grab some sodas and hoppy infused non alcoholic drinks. They have a huge assortment of ice cold drinks and a decent amount of snacks. Finally ordered some Sammie's for playoff football. They said you can call in the order to inhibit waiting. Well we ordered two sandwiches and I specifically asked for a double meat club on meat. Yeah it's a two meal or person type of meal. The meats were fresh and plentiful. The veggies were fresh. The customer service is great and everyone is friendly. Food decks are clean. Love supporting local small owned places especially when they deliver great food.

Yelp
I have only been here once and really wanted to try their sandwiches. I ordered for pickup and it was easy. When I got there I did stand there for a bit at the counter to pickup. This guy just looked at me. At first I just thought he works there but maybe does something else. It was weird. This lady who was doing something saw me and finished up and helped. The order was already ready. So I went to the back of the store to check out their beer selections. As in most liquor stores in SD, the beer selection is IPA heavy. I saw the Asahi and thought, what the hey, I need something. While waiting in line to pay noticed the guy helped other people. Oh so he does work there in the food area. Alright then. Got home and the sandwiches was saran wrap. I'm not big on that as it can make your bread soggy. I ordered the southwest chicken sandwich and the meatball. There really wasn't a lot of chicken and the meatball was okay. There is such high ratings that I really thought it would taste better. The bread big big so you get a lot of that. I'm planning to come here again as maybe I just went on an off day. Note: None of the workers wear masks.

Yelp
This is the best kept secret in San Carlos! You wouldn't think to look at it from the outside, but amazing sandwiches and impressive alcohol selection. Plus their service is great too! Perfect for take out.
google avatar

Briana A.

Yelp
I had the pleasure of living in the neighborhood for about 5 years and with all the different neighborhoods I've living in. This is by far my favorite local store! Everyone here is the absolute best and I mean EVERYONE! The deli has amazing sandwiches with fresh bread every day and they have a wide selection of anything you may be looking for! The owner always greets me with a smile and since I've moved! I will definitely miss them!
google avatar

Jodi W.

Yelp
Still a five star deli. Long waits, so I would say call in if you can. Great prices. Even the wine here is a good deal. (Prisoner 5 bucks less then Vons) I got 5 sandwiches here today, and they were all delicious. 3 hot pastrami, a turkey avocado and a veggie. Love this deli and the chip selection is good too!
google avatar

Jae E.

Yelp
Been going here since high school, the sandwiches haven't missed a beat since then. Everytime i go there i get the cheers combo club on a french roll 10/10
google avatar

Yelp
This deli is always exceptional. Today, they were divine. I had a sandwich concocted in my brain, that I had been craving. They prepared it for me perfectly. It was the best sandwich I've ever eaten. Thanks to the nice Lady and Gentlemen for the work of art you created.
google avatar

Kimberly R.

Yelp
The food is absolutely delicious. Cheers Deli definitely has the best sandwiches. The quality and taste are always fresh and consistent. They give you good size portions at a fair and reasonable price with a quick wait time. Great Customer Service! Whenever I'm in the area or in the mood for a deli style sandwich, I recommend you come here. Guaranteed a happy customer, which is hard to come by nowadays
google avatar

John G.

Yelp
A friend mentioned this deli and we went on a whim one afternoon. Best sandwiches I've had in a long time. People there are so friendly and they put their heart into their food! Also, apparently Justin Bateman loves them too.
google avatar

Wendy M.

Yelp
Always great service from this tucked away gem in San Carlos. Their sandwiches are always stacked with generous helpings of whatever you order. Love the Italian with everything and the BLT has plenty of that crispy bacon that we love. We absolutely love this place.
google avatar

Megan R.

Yelp
Best best best sandwiches EVER!! Fills the sandwich up with meat, can get it however you like but their specialty sandwiches are next level!! I try to come at least once every couple weeks and try a different sandwich each time! Thank you cheers for existing!!

Cindy W.

Yelp
The Sandwiches at Cheers are made fresh and are very tasty! My favorite is the chicken Caesar on a roll.
google avatar

Mi Ran H.

Yelp
No wonder Cheers has a near 5 star rating...!!! My role on the PTA board this year was for hospitality and teacher appreciation. With a budget and unknown Covid rules STILL, I had to find a place that would individually pack the meals at an affordable price for the whole staff. I spoke with Manny directly, who is the GM, and he was amazing from the getgo. Everything was as he said it would be and the food was phenomenal! He even asked if we wanted the dressings and onions on the side! What great customer service and communication. I plan to take my family there so we can enjoy the atmosphere of this wonderful eatery. The only thing I forgot was to ask for business cards and/or to-go menus. Everyone asked where the delish food came from and I dropped the ball on that one. Do not hesitate to order from Cheers Deli!!!
google avatar

Oksanna A.

Yelp
Love Cheers! Grew up in the area and it has been a staple of my life ever since I was little!

Yelp
Stopped here for a sandwich after Cowles, and ordered the Combo club sandwich. On the menu it warns that it is a big sandwich, however it's just about the same size as any other sandwich I've had and was not as filling as I'd hoped. There is a ton of selection here, I mean the menu is insanely long, however the ingredients are of average to below average quality and we're definitely disappointing considering the sandwich is $10. Also the recommended bread choice is a French roll, however I found the bread to be disappointing as well. It tasted of rather low quality, was not at all dense, and compromised mostly of air(and consequently was not as filling as I hoped). The lower quality ingredients combined with the rather salty cashier left me without a desire to return.
google avatar

Natalie P.

Yelp
Came here craving a good sandwich after a hike up Cowles. For $9.99 I got the Turkey, bacon, avocado club. It was pretty good in size and was overall a unexciting.. but more or less an average sandwich. The bacon was definitely the microwaveable Oscar Meyer kind. Maybe I should've chosen something other than a French roll as the bread? Or maybe a little oil and vinegar would help the situation. It was a good sandwich.. but sits low on my list of San Diego favorites. In fact it had me thinking.. I could buy all these ingredients and make a better sandwich at home. Parking is great.. big parking lot. A couple out door seats for you and your furry friend to enjoy. Friendly staff and quick service!

Meagan T.

Yelp
Been a customer for years, love this deli. Simple, affordable and personable. Family is a fan of the breakfast croissant sandwiches and we change our meat occasionally. They always get custom orders right. Enjoy seeing the same employees and they are always friendly! Definitely a hidden gem.
google avatar

Anthony C.

Yelp
A quick bite to eat around the corner. Cheers has been around forever and the staff & owner are always super friendly. Some of the best subs in town for sure ! Recommend 5/5
google avatar

Margaret D.

Yelp
This is one of those places I'm reluctant to review in fears that it may make it even more popular, but let me just say there's a reason this place has been around for 30+ years. From the outside it looks like a regular liquor store but inside you'll find very high quality deli sandwiches and salads, both hot and cold, made to order. You can call ahead but it didn't take them that long to make my order. There are tables tucked inside and a big wine and liquor selection as well. Stop by after your Mission Trails hike or pick up a sandwich on your way to Lake Murray.

Chase H.

Yelp
This place is a gem! Easily one of the better sandwich places in San Diego. I was skeptical of a liquor store deli the first time I went in and couldn't have been more impressed. I've been coming here for over 10 years now and it's great every time.

Eileen R.

Yelp
I luv, luv, luv this deli!!! The only thing better than the customer service is the quality of the food! And vis versa. Thank you so much for caring, and taking pride in your business. Thank you.
google avatar

Shawn T.

Yelp
I hate to say it.. but jersey mikes .. this is your competition.. don't slip y'all.. .. in meatloaf supreme on an roll .u won't regret it..

Yelp
Sandwiches are always full with the works! Comes with side of potato salad or macaroni salad. All types of bread and it's in a liquor store! Been coming here for years.

Yelp
Yesterday I thought I'd give Cheers Deli one more try. I used to go there years ago, but after some unpleasant experiences with rude employees and mediocre sandwiches I decided to lay off. Last week after reading recent reviews I decided to give them another go after fifteen years or so. The system here is that you order your sandwich(es), pay for them and they call out your name when ready. All this takes less than ten minutes. You can also call ahead, or go to the supermarket next door while they make the sandwiches. The selection is huge at first sight. At least fifty different sandwiches, both hot and cold and some you can get hot or cold. The sandwiches are well made, and they are generous with the meats, cheeses and toppings. Each sandwich comes with a little tub of coleslaw, potato salad or macaroni salad which are all good. I like the potato salad best. The problem I have with them (as before) is that they use Boarshead or Hormel type deli meat and cheeses, which is decent quality, but not top shelf. This really shows with sandwiches like the Reuben or Cheesesteak. In addition to this they use microwaveable bacon, which does not work so well for hot sandwiches. Also for some reason they only have one type of ham, honey glazed. The bread is good and fresh and there are several choices, but again the sandwiches would be even better if they used top quality bread. The prices are fair for the size sandwich you are getting. I would not buy beer here as the prices are crazy. They are up to $5.00 higher per six pack than other nearby places, but I knew that already. In sum if you want a large, well made good sandwich this is a good place for it, especially if you live nearby as there are few other sandwich places in the area. For real subs, they lag behind other places that I cannot name.

Penny E.

Yelp
The sandwiches are delish. It does take a bit for them to get made since things are fresh, and they're kind of pricey, but it's worth it. The Turkey/avocado/bacon sandwich is bomb. And you can grab alcohol while you're there!
