Mt. Tabor’s Cheese Bar Is Closing | Eater Portland

"The Mt. Tabor cheese-and-beer shop run by lauded cheesemonger Steve Jones is closing: it will remain open through the end of the year and run a going-out-of-business sale from January 11 to January 24 for all remaining cheese, beer, wine, canned and jarred goods, and restaurant equipment. For years the shop stocked chilled cases with hundreds of imported and domestic cheeses and also sold beer, wine, charcuterie, snack boards, and pantry goods; when COVID-19 hit the shop shifted to an online market and walk-up or call-in orders. In the closing announcement Jones wrote, “After almost 16 years of independent operation we have decided to close shop and move onto other opportunities,” and he told Eater the pandemic was “absolutely” the reason, noting sales dropped to about 50 percent and never fully recovered despite a brief spring/summer bump. He says he’s hoping for an amazing holiday season (having preordered a number of specials) and plans to host pop-up events around town and continue offering cheeses that can’t be found elsewhere." - Alex Frane

Booked fairly last minute, but I'm glad we did, as the place was buzzing by 9pm! Great selection of wines, and really helpful server, who recommended the platters & cheese to go with our chosen wines.

So many good things to say about this place- Pros: *their cheese plate we ordered had 3 cheese selections & each one got progressive better & better, especially the TRUFFLE cheese (it's been a few days since we had it & we're still thinking about it! So good!) *they're open very late (2am) & even though we got there after midnight, they seated us & never rushed us even though we stayed til closing *inside decor was cute & comfy & they have a large outdoor seating area *they were patient with our tourist questions & uncertainty Cons: *they no longer have the chicken sausage that used to be on their old menu we saw in some else's review *that's it - they have no other cons; everything was so good - go there!

Yesterday it was such a bad experience with this bar. There were me and my friend. We ordered 2 glasses of wine. Had some conversation and in some moment asked to pay by card. We paid by card separately. My friend have not finished her glass after we paid so we were sitting and talking and she was finishing her glass. The waiter met some guests, they we choosing the table not far from us and the waiter asked me: when are you going to leave? I told him it is so rude from his side. I don’t know his name, he has light hair. It is inappropriate to send guests away in such an impolite manner. I have never faced such an attitude from waiters. I am visiting this place not for the first time, so it was very bad surprise

Amazing restaurant in Zagreb. All local produce! The meats, cheese and the cod pate were to die for. And once again drank the local red, a Shiraz . Did not disappoint! What was absolutely outstanding was the bread.

Great place and experience as always. Mr Hamsa, the waiter, made it even better with his professional approach, service and friendly communication. We need more gentleman like that in our bars & restaurants :) Will go back to this bar for sure, one of our favourite places in Zagreb.

Stylish, nice place for wine loving couples, larger groups. Very simple, but quality environment, good selection of wines and carefully compiled snacks for the drinks. Loved it.

I had the pleasure of being served by Hamza during my recent visit, and I have to say, his hospitality was exceptional. Not only was he friendly and attentive, but his knowledgeable of the local wines, cured meat’s and cheeses really elevated the experience. He made great recommendations and shared facinating insights about the areas food culture. It’s rare to come across someone so passionate and knowledgeable about what they are serving. Hamza truly made our dining experience memorable. A BIG thank you to him for making our visit so special!

This is one of my regular spots in Zagreb. Every time I come the service is excellent and personable, I feel welcome, not to mention the phenomenal food and wine. Recommend to everyone!
