Expanded Cheese Board Location Coming to Berkeley | Eater SF

"Berkeley’s beloved cheesemonger and pizza slice shop is expanding its footprint: the worker-owned collective (currently 60 members) is uniting the 1500 and 1504 Shattuck Avenue spaces and adding new products, a reimagined cheese counter, more grab-and-go items, and more room for customers; the enlarged Cheese Board is expected to arrive in late spring or summer 2020." - Caleb Pershan

I didnt like cheese roll, especially the unmelted cheese part. The blueberry muffin was very American style. You will like this place if u like American bakery taste but if u looking for French bakery style pastry this is not a place for u u will be disappointed

The Cheese Board is a co-op that started as a cheese store, but now also has a beloved bakery and pizzeria (next door). If you are visiting Berkeley, you must stop by the Cheese Board. The bakery is one of the best all-around bakeries in the area -- other places in the East Bay may specialize in a certain type of baked good, but the Cheese Board can make everything well (especially if it has cheese!) If stopping by for the bakery, you must try the signature cheese roll. Otherwise, there is a rotating selection of breads and pastries, some of which were "invented" in house and have special names (wolverines, zampanos, chocolate things, etc.). The bakery items are continually made throughout the day. While waiting in line for the bakery, you can also get a selection of cheese and prepared sauces. The $25 Adventure Bag contains a good choice of random cheeses, and the green hot sauce is also tasty as a condiment/dip. You can buy par-baked pizzas to finish baking at home. The pizzas are always vegetarian and change every day. If you're just visiting, you can get a baked pizza at the pizzeria next door instead. The pizza is the best pizza in Berkeley. Everything you can buy here is delicious. You can't go wrong with any of the food choices. --- For first time visitors or a casual stop, I recommend buying a cheese roll, seeded baguette, and any pastry that tickles your fancy. For a more substantial amount of food to bring home, I recommend a pizza, a 6-pack of English muffins, the green sauce, and a cheese Adventure Bag. The green sauce usually goes well on the pizza.

Google
Staff here are very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. A great variety of cheeses are available here, with 3 flavors available to try each week. They offer plentiful amounts of sheep and goat cheeses as well more common cheeses as well. Service is quick but doesn't feel rushed. Store is very clean and well presented. Great stuff.

Google
This is the best cheese store and bakery around. Just the smell of everything when you walk in is amazing. Everything here is excellent, but especially the cheese rolls and sticky buns.

Joy L.

Google
We got the rosemary puff, cheese roll, bialy, and zámpano. It was so delicious. Make sure to check their weekly and daily schedules. UPDATE: The Asiago olive roll is the best thing ever. They host a diverse variety of live musicians who sound great, and the crowds love it.

Google
Indoctrinating person behind the counter. Baguette was great when fresh, the country batard bread turned into dry powder in a couple days. (Partially) whole-wheat sourdough breads from other bakeries taste much better and last longer. Will not buy here again

Google
Carrot muffin = perfection Blueberry scone: too bready, not enough blueberries. They should reverse the ratio and make it loaded with blueberries

Google
Quintessential and historic Berkeley pizza place. Live music. Always a great place to relax. People watch and interact with life as it passes by.

Yelp
What I love most about cheeseboard is that every single day I'm able to try in season local fresh produce from farms across the Bay Area. Although I was first hesitant to try a meatless vegetarian pizza, I quickly became a fan of cheeseboard's unique take on pizza every week. I look forward to seeing what's on the menu every Monday night. My absolute favorites include: the butternut squash pizzas, the fig pizzas, and of course the potato pizza. And anytime there is an arugula salad with a lemon dressing on top of the pizza, I'm there! On top of daily variety, cheeseboard also offers vegan/gluten-free options all year round. I have especially been impressed with cheeseboard's action to support immigrant communities in these challenging times. This should stand as no surprise since cheeseboard is a cooperatively owned restaurant. They invest in their workers and in the community, offering musical time slots for local talent daily. The ambience is packed but extremely welcoming. You can expect long lines for both lunch and dinner, but it's worth the wait!

Yelp
The carrot muffins are much much too sweet, really makes no sense for a breakfast food. Makes me wonder about how much sugar is added to baked goods at the Cheeseboard. I miss their bran muffins. They were reliably good and in fact seemed healthy.

Yelp
This is what community looks like. Food opportunities for the EBT people affected. Thank you Cheese Board for sharing to the low-income community: the place was very supportive of us, and you made it easy. I appreciate you and your great hospitality and the beautiful music.

Yelp
The name alone made me stop as I envisioned a full spread of cheese, charcuterie, and all the accompaniments and while the pizzeria next door was between lunch and dinner service, I popped into the cheese shop side. The line was long but moved quickly and the majority of people appeared to be picking up what looked like half baked pizzas to finish at home. Since my hotel didn't have an oven, I opted for a premade salad and a hot apple cider. I literally love hot apple cider and The Cheeseboard Collective's cider was divine as it was perfectly spiced and warming (despite the warm July day!) The salad had organic roasted beets, toasted walnuts, organic romaine lettuce, and a blue cheese dressing which was ultimately fresh and tasty, though a little pricey for the portion sizing. Service was friendly and efficient. If I lived nearby, I would definitely visit all the time to try new cheeses!

Yelp
What a cool spot! There are two sides to the business, a pizza side and the cheese and baked goods side. When we stopped in, the pizza side had live music and there was a line out the door. We were more interested in pastries so we headed next door and ordered a variety of items to go. The team was very friendly and all the options were displayed on the back wall. I ended up getting a marionberry scone ($3.85), a corn cherry scone ($3.85), a cheese roll ($4), and a pecan roll ($4.50). The scones are huge and dense, but still fluffy. The pecan roll is sweet, but not too sweet, and the cheese roll is savory and chewy- Pop it in the microwave for a couple seconds and it's even better. All of these pair great with coffee and I'd recommend sharing so you can try more than one thing, they're big! I'm so glad I got to experience this little local gem!

Yelp
I loved this spot. So fun and energetic. The band they had playing made the vibes fantastic. The pizza was amazing and tasted fresh. Very cheesy and served hot. I never thought I'd be a fan of corn on pizza but I was taken by surprise. Make sure to get the green sauce because it makes the experience EVEN better. We also got the salad. Had to wait in line for 15 minutes but not bad for a Saturday. Food came out quick

Yelp
Cheese Board is a fav! Each week there's a new pizza their flavors are always fresh, unique, and super tasty. There's pretty much always a line down the street, so make sure you get there early. The vibe is classic Berkeley funky, welcoming, and always with a live band playing outside. It feels like a community gathering. The green sauce they give you to dip the pizza in? Delicious!! Everything is freshly made at their bakery next door, and it's all locally and organically sourced, which I love. I couldn't recommend Cheese Board enough it's a must if you're in Berkeley.

Yelp
Whilst recently describing which type of bread my aura would be, I named mine X-Bread from the Cheese Board Collective. And then to my horror I realized I'd not yet reviewed this Berkeley institution I've been visiting for many years. Some of my favorites from the bakery beyond X-Bread include: Pecan rolls Sourdough cheese rolls Cookies Scones Bread (so many choices; all excellent!) There's also an incredible cheese selection here, and you can get half or whole parbaked pizzas without the super long line next door!
google avatar

Veronica A.

Yelp
Delicious cheeses! So many to choose from and their breads are phenomenal. You are able to get a half baked pizza and bake it at home, which is super awesome. The lines are long, but they move quickly!
google avatar

Alexa H.

Yelp
Stopped here for some fresh sourdough and ended up also picking up a variety of cheeses! Delicious bread- we got the sourdough sandwich bread. Everything here looked fantastic, so I'll have to come back and try more of their baked goods!
google avatar

Philip L.

Yelp
Quintessential Berkeley experience and expect a line, but it moves efficiently. You'll want to know what to order before you get to the front of the line. The legendary cheese roll is the best savory item (and best overall to me). The scones are very famous here. I normally dont like scones (because they can be dry and flavorless) but the apricot scone here is moist and rich with bright orange dried apricot pieces. The blueberry millet muffin was an interesting take, lots of crunchy millet particles inside. Wolverines are also a good item here, basically a roll with dried fruit and nuts and a bit of whole wheat.
google avatar

Yelp
I was recently introduced to this Berkeley establishment and fell in love! Delicious baked goods and a wide array of cheeses. Corn and cherry scone was among the best scones I've ever had. Oat scone with currants was also delicious, though not quite as revelatory. Cheese roll was ok. Nice variety of teas and beverages. The long line moved quickly. Friendly service: cheesemonger offered samples to those waiting. No indoor seating and limited outside benches and tables. I'll have to return to try the pizza next door!

Yelp
This place has gone wrong big time, so I'm missing nothing. I came here to get some cheese and there were no people behind the counter to help. It's all self-serve. I assume that there are no tastes either. They changed how they give out bread, it's no longer self-serve so you have to wait in the longest of lines. So a line for the cheese and then the line for the bread. Another gripe, they have a gluten-free loaf, but don't make enough. There are never enough here, so even when I get there after they've been open for an hour. And the pizza, I'll review them next. Gone are the days when I would dream of this place and wish to be there. I lived in the area and would walk down to get my breads, some cheese and a coffee. But never again! I have to say that I used to love the idea of supporting a small-ish, collective, but their time has passed. This place is the definition of has been. The truth is that I can make my own bread and have options, rather than relying on their tired carrot loaf - who wants that? I can get cheese elsewhere. The time for this spot has passed. It's time to move on. I'm looking forward to the next spot that will replace this one.

Yelp
The shop is very quaint and has a wide variety of baked goods + farmer's market quality condiments. This is a Berkeley staple! The apple cider was very tasty and warm. It seemed like they poured it from a premade container that was sourced from a local farm and then warmed it up. Both baked goods were fantastic and baked fresh that morning. The Rosemary puff is lovingly described by my friend as a "savory donut" - and for good reason! It has a sourdough base that is both fragrant and flavorful, but not overpowering. It has the perfect amount of sea salt seasoning and rosemary flavor, and just enough oil to make it soft and slightly juicy in the best way possible. It tastes great on its own or with one of the sauces sold at the collective! The pear ginger muffin was also very yummy and fresh with a distinctly citrusy flavor. It was fluffy and not too sweet. 10/10 experience!
google avatar

Catherine B.

Yelp
TLDR: good quality ingredients, hearty rather than delicate, and worth trying if you're into artisan bread The Cheese Board is known for their pizza (which I've tried ofc) but I've always wanted to try their bakery as well. I got 2 things and I rate in order: - Chocolate thing $3.75: never had anything like this! it's denser than a bread but not as dry or crumbly as a scone, which is why it's maybe just called a "thing." Studded with quality chocolate chunks. - Rosemary puff: $3.25: oiled enough to color the brown paper bag, airy and beautifully baked bread but studded with so much salt on top that the saltiness overwhelmed any rosemary flavor The breads are on the smaller side but considering that croissants and cookies are easily $5+ these days, they aren't outrageously pricey. However, if you aren't someone that intentionally seeks out unique/quality breads, I wouldn't waste my time waiting in long lines or dishing out $$ for these.

Yelp
Hands down, the best pizza on the planet! I just wish they were open every day--and that their deliciousness was available in more cities.
google avatar

Constance L.

Yelp
Line goes out the door but dies off towards the later afternoon. Don't come too late though or they'll be sold out of more items! I got a sourdough boule for about $6 and it was fantastic. Hearty crust and really flavorful interior that freezes and reheats super well (make sure to slice and freeze your bread sooner rather than later so you're freezing at peak freshness!). I wasn't the biggest fan of the cheese roll here as the cheese is a bit too funky for me, but if you prefer non-mild cheeses, definitely give it a try! I do wish they had pads of butter to go so I could have had some of the sourdough or baguette pieces fresh, but no biggie to wait until you're home.
google avatar

Jacintha T.

Yelp
Mushroom pizza w/ lemon vinaigrette arugula The flavors were fantastic! Lots of cheese and I love that you get a slither slice with it. I love that the crust is sourdough based, definitely makes it a different kind of pie. Green Sauce You must get this, it was phenomenal. Like they should sell and ship this sauce it's that good. A little spice kick and cream finish. I love everything about this place! The concept is dope, you either come for that flavor of pizza or don't. With the line wrapped around the building it goes pretty fast and totally worth the stop. #CynBitesThisFeedsMySoulStatus

Yelp
Ginger pear muffin!! Corn scone!! Oatmeal scone!! I'm so happy to find this delicious, relatively healthier bakery in the area. I'm obsessed with the texture and flavors of their corn scone. I was first skeptical about their Ginger pear muffin, but it was really pleasant to have every bite!

Yelp
First time here last week and it was a whirl wind of confusion. There is a line that moves TOO QUICKLY. I felt like I didn't have enough time to look around. There was literally too much to soak in. There were lots of cheeses to choose from. Not much interaction with the workers. And bread... I love bread. I just got whatever was recommended to me.
google avatar

Carrie G.

Yelp
My husband told me he had to come back to this place after having it nearly 8 years ago. And it didn't disappoint! The place only does one kind of pizza for the day! They're only open three days a week too! The line looks very intimidating, but it moves very quickly because they only do one type of pizza. The staff members all had masks, they take covid pretty seriously. and have signs asking you to mask up too. The pizza was very good, but the dough was still missing something that I cannot explain. The topping flavors were delicious though! I would highly recommend trying! Grab a pizza and sit outside and immediately enjoy it!
google avatar

Steve C.

Yelp
This place is a bit of an institution in Berkeley and deservedly so. There is a whole feel in the place that is kitchy and unique. The staff are nice but not kind. They sort of just are people tasked to work and not much more. That's not bad, it's just a feeling you get talking to them. Like they're okay to do their job, but don't expect them to be overly nice about stuff. It's a job. The bread is a bit overpriced. It all looks great, and the taste of the scones/sour dough is worth the price. But you can't really convince yourself of that easily before you pay for them... The cheese was actually pretty reasonable. A lot of options and only ~2x what you'd expect to pay at Costco or the like, so pretty fair for a small business. TL;DR: Support local business that support their employees. This place is good.

Yelp
Seriously yelpers, 4.5 stars? This is hardly 2.5 stars really. We came in for the pizza primarily, but it was lunch time so the pizza place was close (opens at 5p) Instead we got a few pastries - 1) sticky bun - hmm just ok . So many other bakeries make it much better (quail and condor , even Phil's coffee pastries to make a few ). 2.5/5 2) almond cake - dryyyyyyy. Like the dessert . All crumbly and didn't even feel fresh . We took one bite and that was it . 1/5 3) chocolate bun - probably the best out of the three , it still way too much dough and not enough chocolate . It's all in the ratio . 3/5 Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere .
google avatar

Christine M.

Yelp
Love this yummy, delicious , unique pizzeria with a Berkeley flair. Always scrumptious no matter what the combination of the day maybe It's worth the wait and great conversation you pick up in line. I need to visit again. It's been years since we ate there. The pandemic took them out of radius. Now we'll be back
google avatar

Julie S.

Yelp
I really enjoyed stopping by here. We got the hibiscus iced tea which was very tart and delicious on a hot day. Also I got a ginger and pear scone that was delicious. We picked up a bag of mixed cheeses that was labeled "cheese adventure" to go - looks like it had a good variety of options. There's a lot of construction going on here so it's a little noisy and chaotic. I also think the pizza place next door was closed due to construction. Lovely bakery. I'm not sure if they let you try the cheeses yet.
google avatar

Jonathan C.

Yelp
Adjacent to the Cheeseboard Collective, which is where you can dine in or pickup pizza starting at 5pm. This location is open until 4pm and is where you can get purchase cheese, bakery items and half-baked pizzas of the day ($22 full, $11 half). Corn cherry scone: Reminds me more of a corn muffin than a scone. Chocolate thing: Bread was a bit dense for me, and could have had a bit more chocolate flavors. Cheese roll: The cheese and bread was a bit of a harder texture, but we didn't have it until the next day. Slightly prefer the Acme version. Overall, the pastries are fine, but there are better bakeries in the Bay Area (e.g. B Patisserie, Backhaus, Acme). The main thing that would bring me back is the pizza.
google avatar

Katherine G.

Yelp
Ive been to Cheeseboard for the infamous pizza numerous times, but really wanted to check out the bakery this time! I came on a Friday morning around 10am and as usual, the line was wrapped all the way around the corner. Nonetheless, it moves pretty fast so I only had to wait around 5-10 minutes before entering. Masks are still mandatory here! I decided to go for the corn cherry scone and sourdough cheese roll after seeing the great reviews about them. The corn cherry scone was really good, but definitely should be warmed as when cold its slightly dry. The sourdough cheese roll was the same -- super good heated up with the classic sourdough crust taste and nice crispy cheese. Everything was super affordable as well, and service is really friendly. I'd definitely come back to try more!
google avatar

Gabriel D.

Yelp
I've been here 3+ times and it's a 5 star place. But my experience today was a 1 star one. Waited in line starting at 6:24pm. At 7:41pm, 4 parties in front of me, I'm told they're sold out of today's pizza. I wasted an hour and 17 minutes of my life. At least compensate us with free green sauce or something for the people inside the store as you sold out which would be 5 parties. Disappointed. I just ordered Zachary's instead. I'll be back, but man what a rough night.
google avatar

Helen W.

Yelp
Came here twice for pizza. The first time the pizza was potato curry and the second one was mushroom pizza. Both were great! The stand out part is the cheese as it comes from the cheese shop itself. Make sure to get the green sauce too. The 2nd time we got the half baked to take home. We tried baking it according to the instructions (400F and 8 min, extended to 10) but it was not as good as eating it at the store. However, we figured out that air frying instead at 4.5 min and 390F was perfect.

Katelyn K.

Yelp
Great vibe! The live band was fantastic and although it only has one pizza choice, it was well worth
google avatar

Doug D.

Yelp
Their "GF Friendly" bread is like if a bag of sand and a loofah had a baby, a brick raised it, and a hunk of pumice was the babysitter. But besides that they're pretty good.
google avatar

Alyssa M.

Yelp
AMAZING! Addicted to their sourdough English muffins. This is the best location out of all of the Arizmendis! I think it's the original one. Fresh baked goods, so many cheeses to choose from, breads, sweets, salads and PIZZA. If I lived in Berkeley instead of S.F., I'd be here on a weekly basis!!! Line can get long but it moves very quickly! Seating outside and at pizzeria next door.
google avatar

Carol C.

Yelp
No need to write a review of The Cheese Board really as everyone knows of their goodness How fortuitous that my last day in Berkeley coincided with their schedule - open Wed. thru Sunday. I recently stayed nearby and was fortunate to be able to walk over, wait in a quick-moving line to order and depart with a bag of blueberry scones to share. A scone was enjoyed with my morning coffee back at the hotel.
google avatar

Jess D.

Yelp
Great pizza but really long wait times. I came on a Saturday evening around 5 and waited till 6:30 to get my pizza and sit down outside. I don't think it was so good as to warrant an hour and a half wait but it was delicious! I got the mozzarella tomato basil pizza and it was divine to eat it fresh out of the oven! They also sell alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages to enjoy with your pizza on the patio or take home!!
google avatar

Estella N.

Yelp
The best cheese shop! My family always picks up a cheese selections for the holidays and is always impressed. The cheese board staff are extremely kind and knowledgeable in their craft. I would pay for just the experience of walking into the store and talking to the staff. Great ambiance! Great people! And even better cheese! Highly recommend

Yelp
9/21/21 Quality/Quantity - Maybe I picked the wrong items, but neither fulfilled my craving Both items were of good size though Chocolate Thing - Bread with chunks of dark chocolate; it taste exactly how I just described it Sourdough Cheese Rolls - I am a sourdough fan, but maybe I should have heated it because it was so hard that I might have chipped a tooth (I did NOT, trying to be sarcastic) Well we actually came here for the pizza. Good news: they have whole pizzas for sale Bad news: it was par baked, so that was not going to work for our lunch that day... Can't believe I actually miss the days of 40 customers in line, students eating/picnicking in the traffic median; pre-pandemic, this area was thriving! Atmosphere - Good, normal, organized Not sure if there were supposed to be 2 lines? One for the cheese? And another for the bakery? Service - Friendly, especially considered we were confused. So glad she told us that the pizzas were only par baked, because I would have been mad walking all the way back (1 mile uphill) then realizing I did not have lunch! Price - Reasonably priced 3.25 and $3 respectively Owner Suggestion - Sorry to hear that the founder passed, you place is historical here in Berkeley. Still a COOP, keep up the good work, and hope you guys will stay forever!
google avatar

Grace L.

Yelp
Can't go wrong with anything here- treat yourself to all the sweet and salty pastries because everything is delicious. The chocolate thing, blueberry scone, blueberry corn muffin, and chocolate chip cookie are some of my favorites. Also order yourself an espresso drink to compliment your baked good.
google avatar

Yelp
[ During Covid Review ] This pizza place is pretty popular in the bay area that if one were to pass by, you'll see a line going down the block and it makes you want to try what they have to offer. In the mornings, they are open where you can order half baked pizzas that you can bake at home, along with some pastries. Everyday they offer a different type of pizza, so I recommend you check online to see what they the pizza of the day is. In the evenings, you can get a whole baked pizza and it is delicious! I highly recommend trying out their pizzas if you can. I also recommend this green sauce that tastes like a chutney. I'm usually not one to stand in line for pizza, but this place is good enough that I will actually have patience for. Highly highly recommend if you ever get the chance.
google avatar

Sandee L.

Yelp
Super crispy crust with a fantastic intermingling of flavors atop. That's everything you need for the making of a delicious pizza. We scope out the pizza of the day on their website to make sure we go on a day we like the toppings! The bakery offers light bake pizzas. We order a full pie, then cut it up and bake it by the slice at home. Lately, I've been sticking it in the air fryer and it's amazing! I've also tried their baked goods (muffins and scones), and I think they're a-ok. I'd eat the pizza for breakfast over them any day. You'll still find a substantial line during SIP that forms even before they're open, but it's worth the wait!
google avatar

Stefan T.

Yelp
The Cheeseboard and Cheeseboard pizza is now combined into one line and one place to pay. Social distancing and bla bla bla is all taken seriously and this is a great place to get everything you need in one spot. Delicious cheese varieties and more importantly - an expert to help you choose something. I recommend getting here early - the menu is limited more now and a good number of items sell out by late afternoon. Desserts - chocolate chip cookie delicious. Baked well - not flat - but not like a cake either - done just perfectly. I think there was even a subtle crunch on them - professionals put a little salt on top - I think I sensed that. The plain bread had a crunchy crust. I threw it in the oven for just a bit - barley long enough to warm the center (as not to dry it out) and it couldn't have been better. Air holes were plentiful and evenly spaced - just as you would expect the best bread to look. Value is a highlight. This is a place you can come often to without the guilt. If you want to find a bakery that is slightly better I'm sure it would cost double the price.

Mary M.

Yelp
I love everything about the Cheese Board. It has been here since the 1970's, is owned by the employees, is incredibly inexpensive and has fantastic world wide cheeses and awesome breads, scones, & some pastries and cappuccinos etc. The only drawback is the line that can form to get in. However the service is pleasant and rapid.
google avatar

Natalie L.

Yelp
Look. I love pizza. Like, freaking love pizza. I've had a lot of good pizza. Cheese Board is good pizza. Although I love a traditional slice that has the sauce, cheese, and the usual toppings, I think Cheese Board achieves something else entirely. This is no Costco slice. If you're like me and LOVE sourdough + fresh veggies, and you're looking for that really crispy crust, then Cheese Board is your place. The best toppings I think I've had from Cheese Board yet included roasted butternut squash. Their salads can be hit or miss in my opinion, but they're still always pretty unique (at least, if you think non-caesar salads are unique).
google avatar

Marc B.

Yelp
I've had two morning baked good items that I really enjoy. The Blueberry Millet Muffin wasn't your traditional blueberry muffin. It was more dense and not as soft. I really enjoyed it. And I also had the Cheese Roll, which also wasn't soft, but very flavorful.
google avatar

LaTisha S.

Yelp
The Brie cheese I got on Saturday, I went to eat it and it was spoiled. Again I will never ever go to this place again, unless they bring back their experience of how you buy cheese. Which is not going up to a refrigerator, and buying old cheese.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm no stranger to Oakland's iconic pizza co-op so I was incredulous when I saw that I hadn't reviewed it yet. I've been coming to Cheeseboard for many years and fondly remember the live bands, long lines of friendly pizza lovers, and of course the unique vegetarian flavors of the day. I love their concept of having seasonal ingredients dictate the flavors of the day, which all seem to work well, even the ones that have unusually toppings like figs. Some of my favorites have a variety of corn, tomatoes, cilantro, potatoes, onions, zucchini, cauliflower, mushrooms with of course their large variety of cheeses. The crust is thin but substantial. Let's not forget the addicting green sauce, which is mandatory with each bite. I'm salivating now. Currently, whole pizzas are sold par-baked ($22 each). Fortunately, Covid has not deterred Cheeseboard's biggest fans, me among them. The long lines are an ode to the love the community will always have for their favorite neighborhood pizza place.

Yelp
The Cheese Board stayed open for a few days after the lockdowns, with a scheme that allowed customers to enter the store and place orders at a table in front of the shop. They then closed for 10 weeks, leaving a sign to the effect that they were searching for a way to serve their customers while keeping everyone safe. On June 2, the Board inaugurated a web site that permitted pickups two days after an order was placed, during a one-hour window that could be chosen during the order. I filled out the order form on May 29 and specified the very first one-hour time slot on June 2. So did many other people! I was in line on Vine Street for about 25 minutes until I got to the front of the store and was able to pick up my stuff. One feature, or bug, of the setup (then and now) is that you can order a "thing," like butter, but cannot specify the size of the chunk that you'll be sold. For example, I bought butter this morning and ended up with a pound of it. If I weren't not involved in a home baking operation (like everyone else I know), I'd be unhappy with the amount of butter that I now have on hand. The June 2 online system lasted only about two weeks. It was replaced by the current system: The shop is open five days a week from 9AM to 3PM each day. Customers line up at the store and are served in turn. Most of the familiar pastries and breads are available, and of course there are light-bake pizzas each day. There is a limited selection of cheeses, along with some "extras" like castroverde olives. The problem is that the line to buy products tends to wrap down Vine Street. On average, it's 25 minutes long. There are random moments when the line amazingly short, and predictable times (e.g., Saturday mornings) when it's insanely long. When it's your turn to order, you sidle up to the single Cheeseboard member at window #1 -- you list your purchases and then pay for them. After you've ordered, you slide down a few feet south to the fulfillment window (window #2), where you wait something like 75 seconds until your purchases have been assembled. While many customers come up to window #1 with a clear idea of what they want and a credit card or phone in hand, others dawdle and hold up the line. In my humble and personal opinion, the system would work a lot better if two people could order simultaneously. In other words, I'm advocating for windows 1a and 1b for ordering and window 2 for pickup. I think that this tweak would make life a lot easier for Cheeseboard clientele. Another recommendation I'll advance is that the shop be open at 7AM on weekdays for customers who want to get a pastry or two for their breakfasts. We all love the Cheeseboard, but I suspect that a lot of customers are staying away because of the long lines. Build it and we will definitely come!

Yelp
Stopped by the Cheese Board a few weeks ago after hearing Yelp's high rating as the best pizza slice in the country. I went on a Saturday afternoon looking for a partially baked pizza and there was a small line which took about 5 minutes to get into. Pizza of the day had fresh asparagus, onion, toasted garlic, garlic olive oil, mozzarellas, and parsley. For those who aren't aware all of their pizza's are vegetarian with the majority of their pizza having no sauce. We baked this in the oven or about 15 minutes and this was incredible. All of the ingredients tasted fresh and local (which they are!!). The crust had some crunch to it and I recommend adding some hot honey to the pizza as that makes everything better. Very good pizza overall and would love to try to it fresh. Great pizza to take home for a date night in or with the family.

Yelp
I haven't had Cheeseboard for years (3 years to be exact) and so I took it upon myself to introduce it to a friend who just moved to the Bay - yes sharing my love of cheeseboard! My friends who lived in Berkeley were actually the ones who got me hooked (especially with the green sauce). If you ask me how I'll describe it, it's like a spicy pesto sauce that's the secret sauce to making you come back for more. Mind you- I try to watch my carbs. But today, I didn't hold back. My friend and I got a whole pizza of the day (approx 8 slices and then some small ones) and I ate four slices!!! If I'm throwing carbs out the door, then it truly is one of a kind. LOL. Anyway, it's been years since I've had it last but even with COVID, the line wraps around the corner. So you know, it's the real deal. But even with that, it moves pretty fast so don't fret. They're also open until 8pm so make sure you make it before closing! What I like about it is when we ordered we didn't have to wait long and our whole pizza was ready in about a hot minute. With COVID at bay, they sell the whole tub of green sauce for $4.. which to me isn't that bad because IT'S THE BOMB. It's a co-op establishment and they have a bakery next door too. I have been told it is a staple of Berkeley and has been in the neighborhood since the 70s. Plenty of street and residential parking so you don't have to worry about that aspect. There's also outdoor seating too!

Yelp
This is a gem of a place in Berkeley. Delicious pizza that you can get cooked or park baked to take home and heat up. Don't miss out on the green sauce and yummy baked goods too (& coffee)! Service is great and it's a real Berkeley vibe. Great parklet outside to eat so you don't have to stress about where to sit!
