During the 1960's, over 90% of cheese was processed, bland-tasting and dull. Lyman and Linda White's plan at that time was to find and promote natural cheeses to places along the CO front range. That commitment eventually turned to customers seeking THEM out - and Longmont Cheese Importers was born during our country's bicentennial year. The business remains family-owned nearly 45 years later, and their brick building sits quietly along the west side of Main Street (Hwy 287), just South of Longmont's downtown district and on the NW corner of Main and 1st.
The casual passerby probably thinks the building is home to some sort of manufacturer/distributor. In my case, and being from the Fort Collins area, Longmont has been nothing more than a signpost to definitively answer the question "Are We There Yet?" for 30+ years. So it was ironic to feel as if I had "arrived" today when I drove up to 103 Main Street.
Their ample parking lot was the first clue that something special was about to happen. We stepped into the West entrance and were greeted by various folks waiting in a fast moving line to order their lunch. Within only a few minutes, we had placed our order and wandered off with our order number and looking for a table. Despite lots of available tables, it took us quite a while to sit while we took in the amazing and wide variety of European housewares, linens, children's items, perfumes, soaps, cookbooks and "old world" furniture and decor.
I was only 2 bites into my amazing peach croissant when their friendly staff brought lunch. The quiche was filled with the lightest eggs I've ever had, and all of our food was perfect.
We began exploring the rest of the building after lunch, and I played the role of Kojak with a Kodak for the next 45 minutes. The incredible display of merchandise included everything from jams and dips to unique cookware and, of course, CHEESE! Every kind of cheese you can imagine is neatly displayed in the chilly cheese room, and you become lost looking through all of the cool "accessories". This is absolutely a perfect little shopping for anyone who enjoys making or eating food.
My photos will do far more justice than my words, but this is a must-see location for all! Come hungry, and plan some extra time for shopping around after you eat!
