The Best Sandwiches in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"Pick up lunch here before heading to nearby La Jolla Shores Beach. Open since the 70s, the Cheese Shop’s greatest hit is its roast pork loi sandwich: Roast pork loin. Sliced wafer-thin and meltingly tender, the house-roasted pork is seasoned with cilantro and spices and complemented by sweet and spicy mustard and melted cheese. The La Jolla Shores shop’s rendition always tastes better than its downtown counterpart, maybe because you can walk the sandwich over to the beach and eat with your toes in the sand." - Candice Woo

Where to Eat Near UC San Diego | Eater San Diego

"This family-run sandwich shop around for more than 50 years and co-owner Dave Schutz, who started working at the store as a teenager, is often at the counter greeting customers and tourists. The most popular sandwiches are the turkey, jack cheese and avocado, and roasted pork loin topped with honey mustard. The shop is a few blocks away from the beach and a convenient stop for picking up sandwiches for a picnic or grabbing an affordable lunch after spending the day swimming or kayaking. There are flourless oatmeal-almond cookies for dessert and an array of retro candies for sale."

Delicious deli sandwiches! We got our sandwiches, chips, and cookies to go. Tuna, turkey avocado, pb&j were all really tasty and fresh. Not too long of a wait to order, or to get our order. They had lots of candy for sale, too.

We ordered ahead so we could pick up and go to the beach. The staff is incredibly friendly, and you have to get the special green sauce when you go if you enjoy some spice. We had the egg salad sandwich and the evergreen on Italian rolls. They were so delicious and filling. We will absolutely be back!! Highly recommend.

Nice spot to get a break from the beach. Sandwiches are good. Only drawback there is no bathroom to go to, so you use the next door restaurants which is not fare to them....so either you go to another restaurant or take your sandwich to go and don't sit down.

The Cheese Shop is a hidden gem that truly impressed me. The roast beef sandwich on sourdough was absolutely delicious. It was one of the best sandwiches I've had in a long time. The flavors were rich and well-balanced, with perfectly tender beef and fresh bread that made every bite memorable. What really stood out, though, was the exceptional customer service. Dave went above and beyond, offering my friend and me generous samples of their house-made roast beef, vegan tomato soup, and creamy potato salad. All of which were flavorful and thoughtfully prepared. For dessert, the oatmeal cookie was a delightful surprise: sweet and chewy with a crisp, satisfying outer layer that made it uniquely enjoyable. This spot has officially earned a place on my list of favorite food finds, and I’ll definitely be returning soon.

Literally the best place ever. Dave and Dan are so sweet and the food is so so good! They have gluten free bread too for any allergens. If Dave is making his homemade tomato soup, you HAVE to try it (dairy free!). Perfect for a beach day or quick lunch and super friendly atmosphere!

This has been a staple for our family for years. Whenever we are in the San Diego area, we have to make our way to La Jolla just to visit the Cheese Shop. The sandwiches are always great. And the oatmeal cookies…AWESOME! Make sure to take some to go. I have always been a big fan of the turkey, cranberry and muenster sandwich. Very tasty. Definitely make plans to grab lunch here while I’m the area.

Amazing food, get the oatmeal cookie trust me. It’s amazing. Dave the owner has worked there since it opened and is so sweet. All the food is fresh, made the order and you can’t go wrong. I got the Italian grilled cheese and my friend got the famous turkey avocado and goth were amazing. The hype on TikTok is real for this place. Plenty of outdoor seating and good people watching.
