This restaurant is really beautiful, nicely decorated, and very orange haha. The Chinese food is tasty, the portions are generous, and the prices are reasonable. The staff is polite. I recommend it — it’s definitely a place I’d go back to!

We went there on a Friday noon for lunch and we were a party of 6. Service was slow and not all spoke proper English. Food on the other hand was good and portions were good for sharing. I highly recommend the Scallion fried rice and sesame balls.

The food is pretty standard, nothing out of the box. I had better food of this cuisine elsewhere. In my opinion, the Lo Mein was undercooked. Moreover, the service by the staff was not that great. Their interaction was very rude and when asked about a certain food, they were not able to tell that as only one server was able to communicate properly.

I am a soldier of Peter Chang, as is my father, and his father before him. However, we recognize an ally when we see one - another créateur passionate about bringing authentic Sichuan cuisine to the American public. There is no mission more honorable. Chef Jiang may not have the fame of Peter, nor a relationship with the Amish as powerful, but after Chongqing chicken so delectable, he certainly has a place in my heart. May we meet again, my friend. Saluting emoji.

Restaurant Looks fancy. But the food is just ok at most. Absolutely do not order Peking duck. Chinatown Cantonese duck level. Definitely not Peking duck. Very disappointed.

Excellent place for authentic Sichuan food in New Haven. Semi-casual atmosphere with relaxing piano music playing as I dined. Service was good (food came out fast!) and I appreciated that they packed my leftovers for me. Chongqing chicken is one of my favorite dishes and it was great here — perfect blend of crunchy, salty, and spicy without being too overwhelming. The presentation was very cute too. I also loved the eggplant in garlic sauce, which was cooked until tender and sweet, with the surprising but lovely addition of seaweed as well. Really enjoyed everything I had and would come here again!

I ordered delivery, curry beef. It looks very like to be microwaved… the oil on the top is heated too much but the beef inside is still very much room temperature. Would never order from Chef Jiang anymore! Plus - the people there is not very friendly, you hardly see smiles on their faces.

The food was so good we went twice. Everything we ordered was good. I can’t say remember what dishes were what, but take a chance you won’t regret it.

Yelp
I came here with 3 friends on a Tuesday evening. We had a reservation for 6pm but didn't need really need it, as it wasn't crazy busy. The hostess was so sweet and let us choose which table we wanted to sit at because they had many empty tables. We ordered a bunch of foods to share and everything was really delicious. My absolute favorite dishes were the garlic bean sprouts and the braised pork. We also got 3 bowls of rice with the entrees we ordered. I would absolutely try more foods from the menu! The restaurant was pretty quiet and we were able to chat without crazy background noise. It did get more crowded by the time we were leaving, but it was still a nice atmosphere for catching up with friends.

Yelp
Authentic Sichuan restaurant in the area. The deco of the restaurant is very nice and modern Chinese. Also very spacious inside. Didn't feel like you are box in. Their two spicy level was really spicy. I think the flavor definitely was authentic but maybe I could ask to turn down the heat a bit. Service was excellent. All the waitstaffs were super friendly and lovely. Food came out super fast. Here are the dishes I recommended: 1) stir fry bok choy with garlic was delicious! They were cooked perfectly! Everything came out fast but pipping hot!!! 2) really spicy Sichuan beef with Chinese celery Needed to pair with rice! And maybe cucumber to cool your palate down with that heat!!! Spicy AF. This dish was delicious though. 3) pumpkin cookies was written on the menu. But they actually tasted like deep fried pumpkin mochi. Really good flavor and not too sweet. A bit oily though since they were feel fried. 4) signature chef jiang fried rice! There were tons of ingredients like Chinese sausage, mixed veggies (frozen kind) and other things. Every gain of the Rice was separated. Delicious!!! Excellent jasmine tea served in a beautiful teapot!!! I was very impressed with their tea. Told one of the nicest wait staff. And she got me a to go container with tea! What a sweet surprise and gesture! Thank you!!

Yelp
I saw a post about Chef Jiang on tiktok and had to check it out since it's so close to me. The server was pretty attentive, the food was outstanding, and the restaurant was nicely decorated. The dumplings had to be some of the best we've ever had. For my entree, I got general Tso's chicken and it was served over a flame (as was my dad's Mongolian beef). The food was so full of flavor and cooked just right. Everything was served HOT - how it should be! One of the best Chinese restaurants I've been to! It's a bit pricy, but it's worth it for the quality. I'll be back!!

Yelp
I wanted to love Chef Jiang so much but it was really just a mediocre experience. The food was not as flavorful as I hoped it would be. The service was spotty. I found myself looking around for someone to attend to me. The place itself is beautiful. I loved the decor but I wish the food was as good as the restaurant looks. The bok choy with garlic was my favorite. I would like to go back with more people to try more items.

Yelp
First time at this new location. The space is quite beautiful, warm and inviting. The tables are each set so that you have your own space, providing a nice sense of privacy. We were greeted warmly and given our choice of tables. The menu is made of high resolution pictures, making it a bit easier to know what to expect. So many great choices that took a long time to decide! The food was delicious, all of it. A table of vegetarians/pescatarians ate quite well with enough to take home for lunch the next day. We had the vegetable dumplings, veggie spring rolls and Dan Dan noodles, minus the meat, as apps. Mains were tofu seafood casserole, green beens & eggplant, scallion fried rice, and a unique dish of our choice of 6+ options including shrimp, lotus, tofu skin and other great veggies and seafood. A nice final touch was a plate of honeydew melon, something that Chinese restaurants used to give (oranges) as a sweet ending. Very authentic Chinese food! It was a different experience than the Farmington location-no nuts or other free items on the table before ordering. We'll be back often.

Yelp
Chef Jiang is a popular restaurant in Farmington, CT, that recently opened a second storefront in New Haven. Located in a rather inconspicuous location, next to Shiny Salon and BBQ Chicken, it offers a repertoire of dishes that transcends the common expectations one might expect compared to the other Chinese restaurants nearby. Upon entry, the ambiance of Chef Jiang exudes a simple elegance. Much nicer than neighboring restaurants (I'd say very similar to Taste of China a few blocks down). The bright and inviting interior is quite a contrast to its exterior. It's a place where large groups can comfortably gather around the round tables, reminiscent of traditional Chinese banquet halls, making it a suitable venue for family gatherings! The Hot Green Pepper Chicken offered a pleasing blend of flavors. This was the most authentic in terms of taste and presentation. 4.5/5. The Mapo Tofu, a dish which, while lacking the vigorous spice one might anticipate, still delivered a comforting, home-cooked essence. Its subtle flavors, although somewhat underwhelming for lovers of Sichuan cuisine, present a satisfactory option for those with milder palates. It was too bland for our liking, but portions were relatively bigger. 4/5. While somewhat tasteful, the Sautéed Slice Lamb in Hunan Style was way too salty. I'd ask for easy on the salt next time. It shied away from the boldness and complexity typically associated with these regional Chinese cuisines. While well-prepared, it would likely not satiate those seeking an authentic experience. 3/5. I suggest skipping on the Crab Yellow with Pork Soup Dumplings. While the presentation is visually appealing, they may fall short in satisfaction. The dumplings lacked the rich, brothy interior one might anticipate (there was no soup inside despite being a soup dumpling), and the filling was minimal, offering a less fulfilling experience than expected. 2.5/5. The Steamed Dumplings were not unsavory per se, but not worth the price. Despite an employee telling us so, they were not homemade, and the portions were REALLY small. I suggest you skip or choose another appetizer. 1/5. Despite the courteous staff (they were all very friendly and helpful!), the wait time was notably long. We sat down immediately because they were not busy, but it took over 45 minutes for our orders to arrive, a delay that might test the patience of many diners. I noticed some people have left negative reviews for Chef Jiang on here due to the long wait time. However, as a new establishment, it's not uncommon to experience initial operational hiccups, and we should all be more considerate. The staff's friendliness and helpfulness suggest a promising future. Service and ambiance were nonetheless 5/5.

Yelp
Phenomenal. After hearing amazing things about the original location in Farmington, I was beyond excited to try. The space is well decorated with dividers between tables giving you the illusion of privacy at your table. The service was great and the staff was really attentive and kind. They were also happy to share any knowledge when we asked questions. We had the sweet and sour fish, pumpkin cookies, wontons in chili oil, vegetable spring rolls, pork soup dumplings, green beans, and dry pot. All amazing. There is an American Chinese section on the menu, but we were so excited to try some more authentic dishes. Everything was delicious and I can't wait to go back and try more.

Mike S.

Yelp
I had a quick lunch here. Food was pretty decent. Also good decors and cleaning space. Service was just okay honestly, nothing special. I was happy to get watermelons though! I'm usually not a stingy guy but it bothered me that the suggested tips were calculated based on after tax amount and it started at 18% (where you need to check the boxes).

Yelp
The good? It's not awful. Nice people, good space. The not so good? The food. Across the board, everything we had ran the gamut from bland to merely average. I know that operating a restaurant is difficult work and I appreciate what goes in to the endeavor. However, this place is definitely the Panera of Chinese cuisine. I think there are vastly superior authentic Chinese restaurants in the area. After being very excited to try the place, I reluctantly share that I left sadly disappointed.

Tiffany B.

Yelp
A 10/10 experience always - the servers are great and the food is even better. Super cool, up-scale casual ambiance. Perfect for date night or a family outting. I have been to their Farmington location first and I could confidently say it was the best lo mein I have ever eaten. Although, when visiting the recently opened New Haven spot, I knew I wanted to try some more dishes. The string beans (seasoned SO WELL), hot pot (with spicy beef and chicken), pork soup dumplings and pumpkin cookies were incredible. Everything was very flavorful. I was nervous about the sweet and sour fish since I am not a huge fish person, but it did not taste a bit fishy. It was actually delicious, and paired well with the sweet and sour sauce. I am confident that if you like the classic sweet and sour chicken, you will enjoy this as well. Their wontons in chili oil are also a must appetizer for me - so good.

Tricilla K.

Yelp
So I learned today that there is actually american chinese food and chinese food the food was soo good enjoyed all that I ate . The service well the food made up for it. Nice quite atmosphere. A must mention is that pork Mao I hope I said it right

Mei C.

Yelp
Lotus root soup, no lotus root taste but peppery. All the fats floating on the top which is very disgusting.

Kate C.

Yelp
So the decor and inside is lovely, very comfy seats, clean. However my friend ordered a tofu dish as a vegetarian and they cooked it with tofu and pork (not specified on the menu, that there was any pork) they did take the dish back and took it off the bill but that's a red flag for anyone who is vegetarian going here having any tofu dish it's probably not vegetarian at all. We had tea which I think was jasmine, there's not alcohol and the only other options are canned sodas. The white rice was nice, the dishes were brought out staggered so one persons meal and then the other persons meal 5 -10 mins later. I wouldn't return.

Yelp
Visited the new Chef Jiang locating in New Haven last night and was quite impressed. The atmosphere is stunning, almost every table was full (on a Wednesday night) and most of all- food was really good. One important recommendation is to order the BREAD! It was one of my favorite items! The dipping sauce is amazing! Also the stir fried niuhe was another favorite. General Tso's chicken was a great option if you're ordering from the American menu. The crispy cucumbers were another excellent choice! Beef Mongolian was very flavorful and a favorite among the the table. And a fun addition to the evening, the large tables in the middle have a huge lazy susan! Making sharing fun and easy!

Yelp
My favorite Chinese restaurant has opened a second location in New Haven, and I couldn't be more excited! Their food is seriously the best, and we thought everything was very consistent with their original location in Farmington. We went on the very first day for their soft opening, and the staff was clearly well trained because everything went smoothly and our food arrived quickly. Gorgeous interior reminiscent of the original location. It's so good to have Chef Jiang in this part of the state!

Alex P.

Yelp
My friends and I went to Chef Jiang on a Friday night at 5:00. We called ahead of time to try and make a reservation thinking it would be busy but the restaurant was no longer taking reservations. To our pleasant surprise, we were promptly seated at a comfortable table with no wait. The restaurant is big and spacey and can comfortably accommodate large parties. Two of us arrived early and shared the chicken soup dumpling and veggie spring rolls. They both had so much flavor we looked at eachother in shock, hoping the trend would continue. For dinner, I ordered the kung pao chicken and veggie lo mein, both which exuded flavor and were amazing. My cousin ordered the general tsos chicken which was crispy and cooked to perfection. My other friend ordered chicken and brocolli which she said was outstanding. Chef Jiang was amazing and I will recommend it to anyone I talk to. The only thing to be aware of is that the food doesn't come out at the same time, so some people were eating and some people had nothing, but that might partially be our fault because I think it's typically family style. The service is also quite slow but not enough to reduce a star. We love Chef Jiang and will be back!!

Yelp
This is a great restaurant that recently opened in New Haven serving authentic Chinese food that is flavorful and filling. The dining room's ambiance is tasteful while the vibe is casual. The service was prompt, and the waiter started off by helping me open my lychee flavored Japanese soda, which is served in a glass bottle with a top that is unlike American sodas. The soda tasted fermented and healthier than the usual sodas one is used to in the U.S. The food arrived at the table quickly, and everything was good. The cumin beef plate came first, and I could really get the aroma of cumin. The same was true for the ribeye pot in pumpkin sauce. Nothing was overly salty or spicy. The General Tso's Chicken was a little sweet for my taste, but then it's supposed to be sweet, so no complaints. I even ordered a Kung Pao Chicken to go, and the order didn't take long. The people across from us were eating the dry pot, and it looked delicious. I'll have to order it next time. The restaurant started filling up as we ate. It seems like it's already enjoying some popularity for those who appreciate genuine, high quality Chinese cuisine. By their way, the price is reasonable. It's worth noting the restaurant is in an area with decent street parking. It's not hard to find a spot.

Yelp
Chef Jiang's restaurant is a great addition to the Whitney Avenue food scene. We've been several times and enjoyed the vegetarian sautéed green beans, the beef noodle soup, and several kinds of dim sum. The restaurant is tastefully decorated and the staff is attentive. We've added this restaurant to our list of regular places to dine. You should too.

Tarragon V.

Yelp
Only 30% as good as the original one in Farmington. Nothing tastes the same. The mapo tofu was no different to one made with those 50 cent sauces found in a grocery store. The rice noodle was blend. The rest was fair. It shouldn't be called chef Jiang. Just go to the one in Farmington.

Lisa J.

Yelp
Don't know why the rate is under 4. The dishes are all really classic. I haven't had some of them for a couple of years. They have a really full menu

Cary K.

Yelp
The day it was announced they were coming to New Haven was a good day Be a bit open minded, every dish literally is awesome

Danielle S.

Yelp
Best Chinese food I've ever tried! Wide range of flavors and dishes. We had roasted duck, dumplings, mixed vegetables, and cumin lamb. Everything was cooked perfectly! It's comfortable for groups. Service was quick and attentive.

Sachita G.

Yelp
We accidentally stumbled into Chef Jiang's on the Lunar New Year and were surprised at how packed it was at 4:30pm! The venue itself is nice with modern decor and plenty of seating. The menu has photos of all the items available which makes it much easier for ordering (though there seems to be no particular order to the menu). The food came out quickly and was hot (temperature) and extremely tasty. We had to ask a few items for some items but they came out quickly afterwards. I'd highly recommend!

Yelp
There is a new Chef Jiangs in New Haven! It's in the previous location of Great Wall restaurant. Having been a fan of Chef Jiang's Farmington location, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to explore their newest spot. Upon entering I was warmly greeted and seated immediately. The interior is spacious and adorned with Chinese decor. The familiar decor and menu from the original location created a comforting atmosphere. Their extensive menu caters to both traditional Chinese cuisine and American Chinese favorites like General Tso's Chicken and Kung Pao. I love that their menu also includes pictures of most of their dishes for reference. After looking over the menu, I opted for the Changsha shaomai (shrimp with sticky rice) and Xiao Longbao (chicken soup dumplings). I never had the Changsha shaomai, but I have had the Xiao Longbao. Both were delicious and flavorful and were accompanied with a dipping sauce. As always, their plating presentation was creative and left a lasting impression. The attentive staff also added to the overall positive dining experience. There is metered street parking available. And there are 2 wheelchair accessible gender neutral bathrooms available. Chef Jiangs in New Haven is a must visit for authentic delicious Chinese cuisine, warm hospitality, and a welcoming ambiance.

Christine G.

Yelp
Ordered battered fish without fish only fried dough. Asked for less salt came back with salty food. The quality is going down. Does that always happen to restaurants when they start making money? Happy customers will keep your business going. I will definitely going less now.

Miranda S.

Yelp
Did not plan to eat at Chef Jiang's but I'm so glad we did! Personally, my favorite dine-in Chinese restaurant. The hot pot was absolutely delicious. Great vegan options for me and meat options for my husband. Will definitely be back

Jaime R.

Yelp
After hearing great things about the Farmington location, I was excited to try Chef Jiang in New Haven. The inside of the restaurant is actually quite nice, if you ignore the poorly constructed booths against the wall. We were a party of two and ordered the dumplings, roasted duck, fried rice, and braised pork. Our order was taken at the same time as another party of two right next to us. Both the fried rice and the pork came out within five minutes. The roasted duck came out an hour later and after tasting the long awaited duck, it was ice cold. We informed our waitress about this and she argued with us that the roast duck was supposed to be cold. Scoffed at us and had an unpleasant attitude. Not to mention the fact that they also forgot about our dumplings. It was evident that the waitstaff forgot about our food. The party next to us got all of their food and paid before our duck came out. We didn't even get a sorry, only a poor attitude.

Aight I.

Yelp
Quite authentic Chinese Hunan food. One of the few in New Haven. The atmosphere is quite dark, but the restaurant is quite spacious.

M D.

Yelp
We have long been waiting in New Haven for great soup dumplings. They are here. Everything else was excellent. Chef Jiang is the second restaurant and specializes in food from Hunan province. The mod decor with orange banquettes and turquoise chairs completely transforms the space from its previous Great Wall iteration.

William H.

Yelp
My family and I used to drive 40 min to their Farmington location, I'm so happy that they opened one in New Haven. Chef Jiang never disappoints. Their food is amazing, probably the most authentic Chinese food you can find in Connecticut. The space is beautifully decorated. Service is a little slow, but they still deserve a 5 star from me. It's packed on the weekend, so pro tip, go on the weekdays. I'm super happy that Chef Jiang is here. Will definitely be going back.

Deirdre S.

Yelp
The food was amazing & authentic! The service was not amazing, not awful. They've been open for 2 months & are still working out all the kinks. The ambiance was perfect. Not too bright, not dark.

Steve G.

Yelp
For all of the glowing reviews, I'm a little surprised. It was "OK" but certainly not great. Sadly.

Christopher G.

Yelp
Exceptional Chinese cuisine in a beautiful space. Menu is complex; staff are helpful. Extremely fresh ingredients; many unfamiliar dishes.

Beth B.

Yelp
Great restaurant! The food was delicious, and my group was amazed how quickly it was served. Our entrees were not all served simultaneously, which might not be ideal for people ordering individually, so I recommend family-style dining. Nice decor and atmosphere in this restaurant too.

Jonathan P.

Yelp
Have gotten take out a couple times and dined in last night. Pretty good, however the soup dumplings came out as the last course and many had "popped". Was a Friday night and busy, which we were excited to see. Welcome to the neighborhood and we look forward to when the liquor license goes through! I'd say give it a try, I'm sure as they get settled there will be continual improvement!

Emily G.

Yelp
We are so excited about a new Szechuan place in New Haven! On a Saturday evening we had to wait 30 minutes for a table (shameless plug for Whale Tea nearby, a great place to wait) The service and ambiance were great - not too loud, fast and friendly service. Here are the food reviews: Chongqing style fried chicken: there was seemingly nothing Szechuan about this chicken. Lots of breading and no flavor aside from "fried" even though they were mixed with dried chilis. I encountered a single szechuan peppercorn. Beef & Tripe in chili oil: excellent! Lots of chili oil, lots of spice, lots of beef. 10/10 Fresh tilapia with pickled veggies: also pretty bland, not sour as I expected with the pickled mustard greens. I felt like the fish was undercooked. Eggplant and string bean: surprisingly flavorful, but it may have just been really salty. Not much "Szechuan" flair. Cumin lamb: Excellent flavor. 10/10 Overall we chose some typically excellent dishes that other Szechuan restaurants SLAY but Chef Jiang missed the mark. Fried szechuan chicken should be a home run every time but we didn't even finish it I'll give benefit of the doubt and blame new-restaurant-struggles and we will try again. Because we are Szechuan die hards.

Cranky E.

Yelp
After first visit, was counting the days to return. The decor is upscale on a budget- clean, and attractive, efficient service but reserved servers. Our second visit did not disappoint, both lamb dishes were excellent and the dan dan noodles are fabulous! Will be back very soon!

Stephen T.

Yelp
Great food, wonderful atmosphere, good prices and friendly staff. We will definitely be back to try more of their extensive menu.

Joe P.

Yelp
Good place to try out in New Haven downtown near by Yale campus. . They have dedicated free parking lot for their customers at the back of the restaurant. It can fits at least 10 cars. Menu are diverse. Numerous Spicy and non-spicy options . Tastes are genuine as expected. Table setting and decorations are up scale as each table is separated from others so you can enjoy some privacy during dinning. Staffs are generally friendly. Will recommend this place for sure

Harry S.

Yelp
Some of the best Chinese food in the state! So good, large dishes very tasty! Highly recommended

Hao H.

Yelp
I ordered a fish fillet with chopped pepper for lunch today. It didn't feel cooked in the middle and the taste was very bland. I lost it after two bites. I was very disappointed and won't order it again.

Arlene N.

Yelp
We ate here and thought this place was going to be great. It was the opposite. The food was ok, but the service was horrible. We received our dinner first and the appetizers last. The waitress did not understand English we had to help her input the correct items in her tablet. The soup dumpling had no soup. We got a plastic lid as a plate and plastic little cups as sake cups. We received our check before getting our complete order. I will not recommend this place.

Shauna P.

Yelp
Never again. They have a completely disorganized wait time system. Told us it would take 35-45 minutes to be seated and took our name. Checked back at 45 minutes and said they'd call us. Checked back at 60 minutes and said they tried to call us but it didn't go through. Seated us 10 minutes later. After waiting over an hour to be seated, server came by to tell us they wouldn't be putting in any orders for 20 minutes because it was busy. No offer of any drinks or anything at all to make up for the inconvenience. Very unprofessional and poor customer service. Was excited to try this place but won't be going back after this ridiculous experience.

Jim H.

Yelp
The Mala sea bass is so salty as to be inedible. The flavor was terrific but, the salt content made it dangerous. I've eaten here a number of times with good results but this was unacceptable.

Johnny R.

Yelp
Went to try the soup dumplings one evening, place was busy and I was a walking as a single. They were able to accommodate me and ordered the pork soup dumplings and chef Jiang's fried rice. Received the rice which was fabulous... waited for the dumplings for a while and finally asked the server if they were coming and he was surprised they were not served. He said it will be 10 minutes more as the order was not made in the system. I declined and asked for a check. Disappointed as the only reason I decided to try this restaurant was the soup dumplings... may give it another try one day.

Lauren D.

Yelp
Delicious food. Quick and efficient service. Great decor and lots of space. We loved the cucumbers and the fried rice. The dumplings could have used a tad more flavor.

Rick C.

Yelp
Picked up lunch today- good but not great. We had the sweet and sour ribs- very little meat and all on the bone so difficult to eat- beef lo mein good flavor but pieces of beef way too tiny. Garlic chicken ok- no egg rolls on the menu- spring rolls good. Generally small portions and $57.00 for lunch....won't be running back

Gregg B.

Yelp
I found the food to be authentic. Great message. My new go to for Chinese cuisine. In addition staff was attentive. Served quickly

Sandy L.

Yelp
We go here almost every holiday, Chef Jiang always hits the spot and never disappoint. The service is good. Place is clean. Chef Jiang probably has the most authentic Chinese flavors you can find in the Connecticut area. Cannot wait for our next visit.
