Reviewed by This Is Tucson for its Northeastern Chinese stews, meat pies, and a vast regional menu. Order the Jingdong meat pie, soup dumplings, or Dongbei stew; it’s a distinctive counterpoint to Tucson’s Sichuan-leaning scene.

Google
This is one of the better Chinese restaurants I have eaten at. The closest comparison I can make is to the last time I was in Hong Kong (yes, it's that authentic/good). Portions are above average, everyone but me in our group had to go boxes. Prices are reasonable, considering portion and quality. We were a large group (15 adults, 6 kids, 2 infants), taking up several tables (place was full, so felt a little crowded). Regardless, the service was still very good. Wait time for the food was less than expected. This is a good restaurant for a family meal, or a group get together.

Google
Taste pretty authentic. Serving comes in pretty large portion. Visit with 6 friends, each order a dish & damage was about USD20 each. Sodas from the tap are refillable. Service staff are very friendly. Looking for a great meal, no regrets going to chef wang.

Google
I called in 2 orders of wanton. They were not ready and I had to wait. They did not offer me some water and when I noticed my order was ready I approached and indicated that it was my order. The server or individual was hesitant to hand it to me and choose to ask someone in the kitchen. By the time he had an answer the waiter had returned and handed me the order. All that trouble and the wanton had too much dough to be enjoyable. For the money and energy I spent it would of been 100 times better to get frozen chicken cilantro wanton and cook them myself.

Google
I just wasn't wowed. But good enough to say I'll return. I love the spring rolls but won't order the Chicken egg rolls again. Really enjoyed the Chicken Lo Mein and Mandarin Beef.

Google
My 1st time and man was it deliciousness on deck. I had the green pancake and my entree was Wok Fire Lamb Scallion 😋 And my friend had the Shrimp and Vegetables 😋😋😋 So yes looking forward to next visit to try something New and Delicious 😋

Google
I think it's the best in Tucson, it's absolutely amazing. They don't skimp on the spices thank God. I'm from the east coast and know great Chinese cuisine. I'm very happy we ordered from her. I've got to start visiting more places. I'm kinda slacking... So we ordered a 3rd time expecting the same, it was horrible. The general TSO chicken was dry without the sweetness. My house fried rice wasn't as good as before. The ages rolls were terrible. I never give a review such as this. But it was such a big change . We were super unhappy.

Google
First time coming here and was told to have dinner here. Did not disappoint a bit! We enjoyed our dishes with speedy service! Quality was 10/10, not under cooked nor over cooked. We will be back. Highly recommend, being a critic or food this is a 100/10 Thanks for the amazing dinner.

Google
Great service and really good food. The Spicy House Pot with shrimp, beef, chicken, fish, and crab stick stir-fried in a house spicy sauce was amazing. The Kung Pao Chicken and Shrimp Fried Rice were great dishes for sharing. The Small Steamed Buns and Potstickers were excellent appetizers. A great place for a group to eat family style.

Yelp
Finally a Chinese restaurant that makes real Chinese food in Tucson that's not some poor altered Americanized version. I've seen so many reviews for other restaurants where people claim the food is authentic sometimes when it's a dish that was made in America and doesn't even exist in China. The staff here are very friendly. The food is very good with it being cooked and served very close to the real deal. I've spent a lot of time in China and live in NYC near Flushing, the epicenter of real authentic mainland Chinese food, where we eat weekly so I can discern what's authentic and what's not. Be adventurous and try things you haven't had before. I'll use their dish names so not to confuse anyone. We've had the spicy diced chicken, Szechuan boiled fish, spicy pork feet, cumin lamb, eggplant with string beans and beef chow fun. Let me clarify my rating. I'm giving it five stars because they blow away all other Chinese food I've had in and around southern Arizona. Is it five stars in NYC, no but that's because big chefs are brought in from China for the top restaurants here. These are millions dollar restaurants with 90%+ Asian clientele.

Yelp
If Chef Wang has a million fans then I am one of them. If Chef Wang has one fan then it is me. If Chef Wang has no fans, then I am dead. Have not been let down by a single dish here. I am still a diehard fan of the spicy pot and pork & bamboo stirfry, but the mapo tofu and low mein are also . Idk what they're putting in their food but I am addicted and often crave this place. Also the lucky Buddha is deliciously crisp and the bottle is adorable. The leftovers we get from such incredibly affordable prices are always delicious. I hate places that say "spicy" but it's like tomato sauce. No this place means spicy and it's always the perfect amount of genuine heat there tingles and enhances all the flavors. Hell, even the water tastes good after the numbing oil. Friendly staff, fast service. Every single time. Doesn't matter if they're completely packed or not. The service is always fast because they're prepared and equipped for a crowd and mean business. I wish I could single handedly give them all the good reviews to take them up to a high rating but alas I am one person. So I have taken all my local and visiting friends as well as coworkers and neighbors here. Maybe eventually we can flood the love. I will not stop taking people here until they can break through the well deserved 4-5 star range that they DESERVE. I did an analysis on the "bad reviews" and I see a lot of them are going for and complaining about the American Chinese dishes. My response to that is, my guy... you're at a Chinese restaurant, get REAL Chinese food. There is Chinese on the walls, on the TV, and on the menu. If you want American, go to Panda Express or a restaurant that cateres to your uncultured, boring palette.

Yelp
It's ok, big portions, they try to cook all types of asian food, had a fly land on my food while eating. Other asian restaurants are better

Yelp
Great service last time and continued service now. Would recommend if you love rice as they pair very well.

Yelp
This is our 5th time here at Chef Wangs... Wonderful food!! Great service... Thx Ernie

Yelp
We are visiting Tucson and live in Phoenix after moving there from New York City. I have to say the food here is the best Chinese food we've had in Arizona with an amazing selection on the menu. It might even be worth the drive back down from Phoenix just to have dinner here again. Great food experience!

Yelp
Came for a Sunday night dinner and some of our favorite dishes like the Fire Wok Beef and Scallions. However, the garlic pork ribs, which wifey was really looking forward to is out with a completely new recipe. She says, "tell them to change it back!" She was not happy. Otherwise, the dining room was crowded and noisy for a Sunday night.

Yelp
Best Chinese food in Tucson. We ordered the bamboo pork, fried green beans, grilled egg plant and vegetables fried rice. Everything was very tasty and freshly made

Yelp
Very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the dishes here in this Sichuan restaurant!! Definitely recommend the spicy boiled fish fillet, came steaming hot and the cabbage bean sprout layers were well cooked! Probably burned the roof of my mouth a couple of times but very good. The meatball and mung bean thread soup was also good, savory but not overly heavy. The host lady also recommended a pickled bamboo shoot and pork dish that was also perfectly cooked- tender, addictive flavor from the shoots. It was a nice change in palate from a few days worth of southwestern food. Good variety in their menu: Peppery flavorful dishes plus milder more homey flavor fishes if you need something lighter. Indoor/exterior decor was noticeably new/updated - love their custom ceiling lights made to look like Chinese liquor barrels. Felt very much like a clean modern restaurant plucked straight from Norcal- cooking was as good if not better than a lot of the restaurants in South Bay. Service was also very nice and efficient! Only nitpick: probably could up their spice level but hearing the amount of spice negotiation happening at other tables- can maybe understand why : D

Yelp
Food was delicious! Plates just kept coming out around me and I wanted to try them all. I ordered my traditional comfort food, but next time I'm in town I'll try other plates. The ambiance was very comforting walking into this restaurant.

Yelp
Really nice server waited on us during our visit. He made recommendations since it was our first time there. The place is not fancy. We were greeted by boxes of supplies near the door. The food is very different from the usual Chinese food that I am used to. I would say it's authentic. It is something new to try.

Yelp
One of the best unique Chinese menus I've spied with many options in the "Untried" category, I started my exploration with $14.98 Sauced Pork served with tofu skins. This on a Tuesday evening before a Taj Mahal concert at the Fox Theatre, when several, closer in, local restaurants were closed. What a surprise as I've tried most forms of tofu, including the stinky kind in China, but not a chewy tofu skin the size of a won ton wrapper, that is used to wrap the pork & green onions just like a taco or peking duck pancake. It's chewy, almost rubber band-like and doesn't easily break up as you chew, but I liked it enough because it was so different. The dark sauced pork has an almost licorice flavor and thinly sliced, the pork is also somewhat chewy as are the long fibrous strands of green onion. More surprising was how much my husband liked this dish, normally eschewing anything soy based (except for soy sauce his fave), he ate two skins and kept forking his way through the saucy pork too :D He requested a House version--chicken-beef-shrimp--of their chow fun and waiter didn't flinch, no problem. $14.98 too, it was a large dish but the noodles & veggies were a bit overcooked, mushing together and not separating as per norm. Still had good wok hei flavor and asking for some chili crisp, topped the dish nicely and still enjoyable. Saw the Kirin tap but was not available, and with only Bud Light on draft for $6.98, we opted to share a Lucky Buddha 12oz $4.50 which has a crisp light finish like most Asian beers but less lingering vegetal or grainy flavor than Kirin which hubby prefers. LuckyB also comes in a beautiful glass Buddha belly so we kept it to home a not-yet-purchased lucky bamboo shoot! Dining room has a cool modern vibe, asian lanterns that look like ceramic pots on ropes dangle from a dark ceiling, highlighting wood and metal chairs with red vinyl cushions and booths, an impressive wall of white grey marble backs the service area with a cold appetizer bar, also something I've never seen in a Chinese restaurant - price varies $10.98 small I think. Chef Wang dangles more Untrieds for future visits, so stay tuned: Wild Pepper Stir Fry Lamb $15.98, Grilled Pot Bullfrog Legs $16.98, Vine Pepper Fish $16.98, Fish Pot Stickers (8) $10.98, Grilled Intestine Pot $16.98

Yelp
One of the best Chinese restaurants on the continent, right here in Tucson. The only Chinese restaurant I'd rate higher is in Montreal (Nouilles de Lanzhou). Amazing home style simple dishes. Everything has been perfect: the eggplant dishes, thin sliced tofu with peppers, mapo tofu (heavy mala), yuxiang pork, fried croaker. Fast service, clean surroundings, and well-spaced seating. Also very good value for money.

Yelp
Food always delivious, awesome service, clean and nice place. Private parking lot. The cold salad is highly recommended.

Yelp
My go to !! Owner is a ball of energy . You will not be disappointed. Flavor explosion. #1 spot for authentic Chinese.

Yelp
Another interesting Chinese restaurant in Tucson. The restaurant itself is in a repurposed building that obviously housed a totally different restaurant concept and is clean and reasonably modern. Our server was friendly and had some difficulties with English (always a good sign in an ethnic restaurant) but got our order right and the food arrived after an appropriate period of time. While they have many "traditional" Chinese-American dishes, there are also many dishes that you won't find in most other Chinese restaurants in the US. All three of our dishes on this visit (steamed dumplings, MaPo Tofu and Grilled Lamb Pot) were very good and we would recommend them without reservation. There are so many different dishes here that we haven't seen elsewhere that it will take awhile for us to work through all of them. Enjoy!

Yelp
Along with a few others, such as Jun Dynasty, Chef Wang seems to be one of the most recommended Chinese restaurants in Tucson. Redditors, the Tucson Foodie, all rate it highly. I can see why. Chef Wang has the sort of Chinese menu I think works best in terms of business sustainability: the full suite of 'Americanized' dishes for the less adventurous along with an array of more traditional dishes. It's the latter I look for, although I enjoy American Chinese as well. - water-boiled spicy fish: one of my favorite Szechuan foods, the name here seems to imply a watery dish. It isn't - it's what you expect if you've had boiled fish elsewhere. Large chunks of a white fish cooked in a spicy broth with some non-dominant vegetables. You'll get a moderate dose of the 'hot and numbing' sensation from the Szechuan peppercorns. This entree comes out in a huge bowl - enough to feed four. - fried spicy tofu: also excellent. The tofu is well-prepared and served on a bed of cooked cabbage. Comes out in a hot pot. - fried green beans and salty fried cabbage: our side dishes, both tasty. We probably didn't need the cabbage side what with the tofu dish but it's so good. I love the green beans here. Service is great; booth was comfortable; ambiance is fine; prices reasonable. Beer and wine available.

Yelp
Take out garlic ribs have been our go-to for years. Last night the recipe has been changed for the worse. Too soft and less garlic was not at all what we'd come to expect. Hopefully it was just a bad night and not a permanent change.

Yelp
I think I could take it or leave it, despite the reviews. I'll keep on mind for the best Chinese in town

G D.

Yelp
Food - excellent. We ordered beef chow fun (great), black bean fish (great), and honey walnut shrimp. Shrimp themselves were huge and well prepared, but there was just too much sauce for me - Mom thought it was good though (it's one of her fave dishes). Uh, they have some pretty exotic dishes available and I'm going to leave it at that. Friendly and helpful service. Clean dining room and frankly I liked the ambience after eating at a couple of other Chinese restaurants here lately that felt like eating in a hospital cafeteria. Here, sort of a diner vibe. Booths and tables, shades on the windows, etc. Kitchen - they know their stuff. Everything steaming hot. Spicy hot too if you want it (I will next time). Very efficient and large portions.

Yelp
Great food, amazing portions. Their chow fun, salt and pepper shrimp are simply amazing. We've tried multiple different plates here and they are all awesome. Can't believe we never came here sooner. Since our first visit we Have been back 4 other times and ordered pick up numerous other times. Food is great and so is the service. Check it out. You won't be disappointed

Nat B.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite Asian restaurants in town! They are also very friendly, and the portions are very generous. The Spicy Fish Stew/Soup is so flavorful! You can also ask them to make the Spicy to your level of liking.

Yelp
The Pork in Brown Sauce, one of the best dishes I've ever had in my life, wow! The soft meat melts in your mouth, I want seconds and thirds haha. Sweet, savory and complex. Great prices, great portions. The Steam bun appetizer is a rarity in Tucson and an absolute must. The Jasmine tea has a floral flavor. Big thanks to my server "Roc" knew both English and Chinese, fast and polite. Every dish so far has been mouthwatering and wonderfully unique. No Teriyaki chicken, all very cultured food here. Located near the corner of busy Grant and 1st Ave, easy to locate with a wide view of the mountains to the north. The ethnicity also eats here which is a sure sign of greatness. Explore their options, so many good looking and sounding dishes. Thanks Chef Wang and team.

Yelp
Everything, I mean everything is delicious!!! They are also very sweet & efficient:) I highly recommend their Spicy Beef Noodle soup.

Yelp
My family is on the search for our new staple Chinese restaurant since moving from out of state. We have drove past this place many times and it was always packed so tonight we decided to try and unfortunately, we will not be returning. We started with hot and sour soup. It wasn't great... but little did we know, it would be the best thing we would try that night. We also ordered beef with mixed vegetables, shrimp with head, soup dumplings, and pork riblets served. Everything was bland and oily. Service was not the best either. Disappointing and the search for best Chinese in Tucson continues.
google avatar

Yelp
I get that this place scores high, which is why we went there. First off if anyone thinks this matches Chinese Schezwan food in New York, must be eating it in Albany. We went mid afternoon there and pulled the "we are staying at a hotel," scene to avoid taking home any leftovers. The server seemed perturbed because there was a lot of food left. We did it due to it being yuck. Service was good and food came out fast - did I mention we were the only ones there? My dish was - Grilled Shrimp pot. A lot of shrimp but the taste was off, simply because there wasn't a lot of sauce covering the shrimp and you shouldn't taste a flavor of well the sea. I was told mushrooms were in there. Nope. It has lotus which was everywhere. Fresh veggies were lotus and one other. It was a fail. The spouse went with the spicy diced chicken. The sauce was very good, it had cubed carrots and she said the cubed chicken was very good. We did consider the Grilled Tofu Pot, which mentions fresh vegetables. Which ones? Only cabbage. I guess since there was more than one it makes it plural. I had some pics can't find them. No loss.

Yelp
Chef Wang has been my go-to for Chinese takeout for years. It's convenient to order online, and although prices have gone up, I still think it's worth it for the freshness, variety, and flavors. My favorite dishes are the meat pie, steamed buns, eggplant tomato potato, and lo mein. We always have leftovers thanks to the generous portions. There's so much more to try, so there's always a good reason to go back and expand my palate. Definitely a contender for best Chinese food in Tucson!

Yelp
This Szechwan style Chinese food restaurant has really good food. I really enjoyed the Kung Pow Chicken lunch special. It was very flavorful and fresh. The restaurant itself is very clean with a nice ambiance. As for the staff, they where pleasant and attentive. I would recommend this restaurant for authentic Chinese food.
google avatar

Ed G.

Yelp
Extensive, authentic menu. Worth a few return trips to try more of it. A good variety of hot pots and water boiled Sichuan dishes.
google avatar

Russell B.

Yelp
This could be because I just ordered the wrong thing. But I thought it was really bad. Definitely stay away from the Spicy Chicken. It tasted like a ball of pepper. It was very spicy, but without that good flavor that spicy food rewards you with. My wife had the orange chicken. She was not a fan of it. Actually thought Panda Express orange chicken was better. I tasted and thought it was okay. Just okay. The positives were the service was excellent. Place was very clean. Food was very presentable. They had a pretty good amount of people so some people must enjoy it. Wasn't for us, though.

Scott W.

Yelp
Was there with friends last night and ordered our usual items. None of our regular items tasted the same as before. General Tsao was close, but the Mongolian Beef was not as tender or as flavorful as before, the pigs feet were a totally different item than we previously received. This was our go to Chinese place, but now has us rethinking it.

Yelp
Ambiance is great for lunch and dinner with family and friends. No issue with service. Water-boiled Fish 5/5 Hot and spicy pot of fish and vegetables that have showered in generous amount of chili oil. This dish must be paired with another or else the burning sensation can get you. Highly recommend this if you love spiciness. Large Cold Appetizer 5/5 Most of their cold appetizers are decent; notable mentions include the seasoned sliced beef, stripped potato, seaweeds and bean curds. The portion is generous and matches the price Intestines 5/5 Whether it's stir-fry, grilled or deep fried, their intestine dishes are authentic and superb. DO NOT try this dish if you are sensitive to strong smells. When ordering it as deep fried, the crispy texture matches the melty, fatty content with every bite. Salty Fried Cabbage 5/5 Though pricey, this dish is wok'd with sizzlin flavors! It's hot, salty and crunchy when served fresh. Simple, yet delicious. I will definitely come back for this dish. Grilled Eggplant with Potato 4/5 Best to consume immediately upon serving. The high-heat cooking from a wok makes the vegetables dance on the plate. Texture is intact with bursting flavors on every bite. Will not be good if you consume it cooled Shrimp Walnut 3/5 Not salty enough (shrimp tastes plain), coated mayo sauce is too sweet, not enough walnuts. House Fried Rice 2/5 Plain fried rice, nothing special, and can't experience the wok heat. Doesn't taste fresh either. Grilled Pot Pork Ribs 2/5 Meats are dry and there is not enough seasoning. Fried Croaker 1/5 DO NOT ORDER THIS. For $30, you can get two inappropriately prepped fish that provides a dinner-long pungent taste. Meat is dry, sauce is just plain sweet and bland. Overall, an excellent authentic Chinese restaurants that offers a variety of dishes. Despite half of the dishes that I rated on this review are not the best, I have tried many others in the past years that are amazing. I will need to try them again before I can share my thoughts in future update reviews.

Yelp
This is it. Real deal chinese food, family style if you're into sharing. Giant tables & lazy Susans :) sharing is caring.

Yelp
Casual restaurant with a variety of options. Fish, beef, chicken, shrimp, tofu, intestines, and more. Flavorful sauces and large, shareable portions. Rice noodles are perfect texture and taste.
google avatar

Yelp
Picked up an order to go! Garlic ribs. Boiled fish. Noodles fried rice. All fantastic! Love the menu options. Authentic food you do not get at too many places. And yes. Good! Nicely flavored. Staff was friendly. Interior was clean.

Marguerite S.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite places to eat in Tucson. The food is delicious and the portions are huge. I usually get delivery but I stopped in recently and the restaurant is very clean and tidy and the staff were very friendly. If you want Szechuan food this is a great spot.
google avatar

Alexiz A.

Yelp
Went here Friday night. Psa, they have a large menu, which may be a bit overwhelming, but I'm definitely up for the challenge of exploring what they have. The food we got had some hits and misses. The pork and cabbage dumplings were delish! The sesame chicken and sweet and sour soup were good too. I had ordered the Sichuan pork stir fry, and although it did have a numbing effect, the flavor wasn't what I was expecting and not my favorite. My son ordered a beef noodle soup, and the broth was ok, but we honestly had a lot of food already, not realizing it's family style, so it was taken to go. Our server was great! He was very attentive, and I do plan on coming back and exploring the menu more! They had quite of people there Friday night, but it wasn't too packed. Just the right type of ambiance.

Yelp
After an absence of about three years, Chinese friends coming to the Gem Shows brought me back to CW three times in the last two weeks. As is customary, we ordered two dishes per person plus extras selected by the host. Service was good considering the gem show attendees packing the restaurant. Among the dishes ordered was steamed talapia, spicy house pot, frog legs, spicy diced chicken, sweet sour fish, honey walnut shrimp, beef with broccoli, house special sauteed vegetables and on and on. You definitely don't lack for menu choices. We had left overs for three days. The ambiance is typical of most Chinese restaurants in Tucson. I have debated giving a forth star. Maybe next time.

Yelp
Amazing food!!!! If you are looking for a great Chinese restaurant - check this place out. HUGE portions. Do yourself a favor and try the Cumin Lamb and Green Onion Pancakes.

Emiliya D.

Yelp
The best Chinese food in tucson by far! Friendly staff even on busy days. Great classic American Chinese options and also authentic options. We recommend the preserved eggs and tofu, steamed buns, the lamb hot pot is sooo good, and the honey walnut shrimp. Idk why they only have 4 stars currently. Definitely deserve 5 stars!
google avatar

Dale Y.

Yelp
Must have changed Chefs and owners, food quality has dropped. We went three time to be sure and each time food was not that good.
google avatar

Melissa G.

Yelp
Bull Frog Dish with Lotus root and other vegetables . Food was absolutely delicious. Our service was superb and A plus . Ambiance clean and the lighting was perfect and very relaxing after getting out work and having a date night with my darling husband.

Yelp
I was looking for a Chinese Restaurant and bumped into this place. I absolutely loved their food. It is Family Style. We had Traditional Beef Noodle Soup. The noodles were so fresh and the beef so soft, great flavor. We also ordered the Green Onion Pancake, and Chicken Lao Fun. It was all delicious. The service was very good. And the ambiance was comfortable, it was very relaxing hearing soft piano music in the background. The reason I do not give 5 stars is that the place could use some updating with upholstery, and signs on the columns. It really was good. Hope you give it a try.

Maria B.

Yelp
I loved Chef Wang. They had a very extensive menu which was great. We had their Mongolian Beef with different appetizers. The waitress was very helpful. I can't wait to go back again.
google avatar

Jeff David G.

Yelp
I liked this place, but there are better Chinese restaurants around Tucson. I ordered the Shrimp Lo Mein and it wasn't bad my any means, but was a little bit one note and not very exciting. I have heard the hot pot from here is the way to go so I will have to try that next time. Still a fun place to go to, but maybe try something different. Service was good but the environment wasn't anything exceptional either.
google avatar

Mike D.

Yelp
Nice ambiance inside. Service was excellent. Food was spicier than I expected as we got it regular..we did the grilled shrimp and beef pots- good stir fry but would have been better with less spicy heat.. chicken egg rolls we great . Portions were generous thus we could have split one entree between the 2 of us. The place was hopping on thanksgiving day .

Rene U.

Yelp
Got food poisoning from the chicken pot Here's the kicker... on Christmas!!! Something bad must be going on in the back of the kitchen because wtf... my friend and his family were also eating with us and they are saying the same thing... eat here if you like throwing up for hours. Never have had a Yelp account but this place was so bad I had to sign up just to write this.

John M.

Yelp
Excellent place -- Chef Wang is where my wife and I always go for Chinese takeout. The food is delicious, the portions generous, staff friendly, clean and calming when we enter. Very highly recommended!

Joanne R.

Yelp
Authentic Chinese dishes from different regions. The Hunan Beef has the "Chinese numbing peppers" in perfect measure. Try a dish with them if you like spicy food: they are flavorful and taste like nothing else. The service is spectacular. The young man that helped me refused to accept a "takeout tip," and when we ordered steamed dumplings and asked if they were soup dumplings, our server honestly (and accurately) said 80 percent. The ambiance is upscale Chinese restaurants, and parking is in their spacious lot. A hidden gem.
