Houston’s the Chef’s House Is a Tasting Menu Restaurant in Someone’s Home | Eater Houston

"A tightly curated, reservation-only tasting experience run out of the chef’s actual home, this Chef’s House pairs theatrical, open-kitchen plating with warm, communal hospitality. Chef Jan-Mitchell Avilés (joined by sous chef Tyler Westry) executes a monthly-changing, multi-course menu that draws on his Puerto Rican roots, Mediterranean influences and Westry’s Uruguayan/Italian background; standout plates have included a compressed watermelon sashimi that eats like tuna, seared scallops in a bright aguachile, a deconstructed Ropa Nueva, an intricate butternut squash and ricotta ravioli spiral, and a caramelized plantain topped with caviar over ice cream. Service is highly orchestrated — a small team (including a head server, an experience coordinator who narrates dishes, and a beverage director who pairs wines such as Grüner Veltliner and Ribera del Duero selections) moves through a dim, minimal dining room where guests sit together at a single table, encouraging conversation and connections. Operated more like a social club than a traditional restaurant, the operation is fully licensed and certified, evolved from earlier pop-ups, and transitioned to a permanent home in 2023; seating is intentionally intimate (tables of six to eight on weekends, with a planned two-seat chef’s counter) and the price now reflects a destination dining experience rather than a casual pop-up. The overall vibe is intimate and personal — diners get a front-row look into the chef’s creative process, community-minded hospitality, and a “best-kept secret” feel that attracts adventurous, well-traveled guests." - Brittany Britto Garley

What an amazing experience at this family owned restaurant. The food and service were fantastic and we loved that it was byob. They had palate cleaners between courses and everything we were served was excellent. We went during the week for a bday dinner so there were only 10 people seated. What a gem to have in our community!

We are foodies - so ever Anniversary we go big but we out did ourselves this year! Chef's House in Roanoke, TX was spectacular! Better than Hell's Kitchen (9 yr) & Nobu (8 yr) Anniversary dinners. This restaurant is truly next level cooking - Go try it - you won't be sorry, except when you eat too much 🤣

Such a fun concept for dining. We went here for my boyfriend’s birthday and it was a wonderful experience! We actually got lucky and it was a private dinner. The music was perfect, not too quiet nor loud. Very cozy, yet charming restaurant. The food was amazing (I’m the pickiest eater ever.) Ate everything. Perfect spot for date night, special occasions, family outings, or friend gathering! It was $65pp which is not bad for the portion size and quality. It’s also byob (or they offer a pairing for $30) we did the pairing VERY nice touch. Everything was absolutely wonderful. Definitely booking another table here again!

Google
Amazing food in a cozy atmosphere. Feels like you are being pampered by family. Set menu changes each night. BYOB. Everything was delicious! It is obvious they prepare and serve their guests with passion! Feels like a supper club with only 20 people per seating. Please help keep this small family business thriving by NOT canceling or no showing. They purchase quality products and prepare for their reservation headcount. On our visit they had a party of 6 no show. That inconsiderate act hurts the business AND keeps the rest of us from scoring a reservation time once the secret is out and this restaurant experience is highly sought after. Can't wait to visit again!

The food was very good, The service was Amazing. but the atmosphere was very chill. Look like you’re going to have a four course meal in your friends house I was dressed a little too dressy for this lol because from what I read, it was a five star, every table has different napkins and silverware. The chef comes out to see you, which was nice. Again, it’s like you’re hanging out in a friend’s house, which is probably what they’re trying to go for overall it was a different experience, but not what I expected and of course it’s BYOB so you really couldn’t hear yourself talking because it’s a small place with little like 20 people

Chef’s House is a truly special farm-to-table experience. With only 20 guests served each evening, it offers an intimate and thoughtfully curated dining atmosphere. The menu changes daily, featuring fresh, innovative dishes crafted with herbs and vegetables grown right in their on-site garden, along with locally sourced Texas beef. Every detail—from the flavors to the hospitality—feels deeply personal and genuine. It’s a warm, one-of-a-kind culinary experience unlike any other. Truly a unique restaurant to experience in DFW.

This was the first restaurant I've been to in a while where I felt the food quality, atmosphere, and service was worth every dime. Definitely better than any other high end restaurant you will come across in downtown Dallas or Fort Worth. Every little detail is so well thought out and everything tasted spectacular. This was such a cool experience and I can't wait to go back!

Google
Rarely do I go to a restaurant where every aspect (service, atmosphere and food) is spectacular. Tonight, I experienced the most delightful meal. From the moment we arrived to the end of our meal, there was no fault to find. The food was exceptional. The service friendly and the atmosphere relaxing. Do yourself a favor, and make reservations at a Chef's Table. You will not be disappointed. Thank you Chef Sage and Buso for a wonderful evening.

Yelp
Where do I start? My daughter, husband and grandchildren brought me here for Mother's Day, normally they are not open on Sunday, but they have had such a great response to Sunday that they are considering adding Sundays more often, or so I was told. Ok, let me share with you what makes Chef's House different than most restaurants I've been to in the Roanoke, Keller, North FTW area. It's completely Chef Curated. Every evening is a several course meal, all carefully arranged and selected by the Chef, Sous Chef and staff, our meal started with some in house baked bread, fresh butter, EVOO, and a purée that was so fresh, I really should have asked to buy some to take home. Before the first course comes out, there is a small serving of a palate cleanser juice/spritzer to refresh your mouth, ours was a mixture of fresh fruit including açaí and I was grateful for it, as our first course was a delicate seafood crepe topped with salmon Roe, the flavors were fresh, lite, and the portion was perfect. The crepe was followed by a garden fresh salad made with my favorite arugula, house made dressing, and a delicate cheese that paired so perfectly with the fresh vegetables. The main course was the most delicious filet mignon I've ever had, served on a bed of the smoothest, velvety mashed potatoes. Our meal was finished with a small, rich, decadent chocolate mousse. The entire experience was top notch, I would recommend Chef's House for any occasion that you want those you invite to feel special, important and valued. I also recommend this cozy spot for events where you are showing appreciation such as employees that have reached a milestone, graduation, etc. The atmosphere is eclectic with interesting decor to stimulate your curiosity along with your appetite. I truly appreciated not having to agonize over a menu, it added another layer to my experience, but I like surprises and trying new things. You can see the daily offerings/menu on their website, however, because we went on Mother's Day, which was a special event, the menu wasn't available. One last thing, I cannot forget to mention the service, we felt looked after and cared for by everyone that engaged with us, something often missing in higher end restaurants imho. So if you have a loved one with a special birthday, anniversary, etc. I recommend Chef's House, I truly give it a 10/10 I wish I had photo's, because of our family gathering I chose to keep my phone in my purse and focus on them, but I can tell you that the photos available are very accurate, so make sure to look thru those available above. Lastly, as you walk up, notice the garden beds to the right side of the building, much of their fresh produce is grown right there on site!

Yelp
Absolutely amazing! This was hands-down the best restaurant meal I have ever had. From start to finish, every course was perfection. We began with silky pappardelle in an herb and sundried tomato Alfredo, rich and flavorful without being heavy. The second course was a fresh baby arugula salad topped with creamy goat cheese, roasted pecans, sweet strawberries, and a bright citron vinaigrette -- the perfect palate refresher. The entrée was the showstopper: a perfectly cooked filet mignon draped in a decadent black truffle demi-glace, melt-in-your-mouth tender and bursting with flavor. Dessert was a surprise creation from the chef, and it was the perfect sweet ending to the night. The service? Out of this world. The staff (family owned) made us feel like VIPs, anticipating our needs before we even asked and creating an atmosphere that was warm, welcoming, and truly special. Bring a favorite bottle of wine or let the chef pair one for you -- either way, you're in for an unforgettable dining experience. I cannot recommend this place more highly!

Yelp
This place is such a fun concept... It's like you are going over to a friend's house for dinner! The chef's food is amazing and I love that the menu is new everyday! Cant wait to go back and try another meal. :)

Yelp

Yelp
My sister & I had the best lunch experience today at The Chef's House. We came to celebrate her birthday & left full on great food & conversation. Chef Sage has amazing culinary skills but was also a fantastic host. Can't wait to come back for dinner. I meant to take more pics but we dove right in to the other courses & completely forget. Next time...

Yelp
Everything went well!! If you are considering this place, book it! One of the best dining experiences I've ever had. Great care is taken to curate a 4 course menu. The chef describes each course with the pride of a true artist.

Yelp
This was the absolute best dinning experience. The front of the house is staffed by the chefs family and all of them are so engaging and so knowledgeable about the menu. Each course showcased the farm to table nature of the menu and the meticulous care taken with each ingredient. Everything we tasted was very delicious but the steak stole the show. I have eaten steak in several states on also in a few different countries and non have been more flavorful or well prepared. Within 10 minutes of starting our meal, we were trying to formulate a list of people we could share this experience with the next time we are here. This place is excellent and anyone considering dining here should definitely do so.

Yelp
This was a special experience! Chef Sage and his sons made the evening very special. The food was just awesome and Chef's description of each course added so much to the enjoyment. The little things like the palate cleansers added so much to the occasion. The crab risotto was a standout for sure!

Yelp
Best meal I've had in a while. All cooked in house with fresh ingredients! Really impressed with the service and the food presentation

Kevin G.

Yelp
Very nice, quaint, comfortable and intimate dining experience, Chef Sakiri interacts with each table to explain the meal to his guests. Food is terrific, wait staff is very friendly and accommodating. It is a fixed menu so no ordering off a menu, also BYOB. I've been there twice, each time was an enjoyable experience. Thumbs up!

Stephany A.

Yelp
The service was great and the food was delicious!! I loved the cozy atmosphere. The chef came to our table and described his creations. He was very good to accommodate the food allergies one of us had as well.

Yelp
Fantastic food and service, such a great add in Roanoke. This is a truly unique experience; limited seating, fresh food with personal interaction with the chef.

Michelle J.

Yelp
This was one of the Best experiences! Personal conversations with Chef Sage about the food, his life, and where he grew up. The meal was exquisite. Everything was very well prepared and tasted delicious. Well worth the money and time.

Abdul R.

Yelp
One of the best dining experiences we had in recent times. Each course is very carefully prepared and they take pride in what they serve. Excellent service. Because it is BYOB, it is easy on the wallet as well.

Yelp
My wife and I did a night out before Valentines Day as they were already booked for the big day. Anyone that knows me this experience was way out of my comfort zone as I'm not the daring type when it comes to dining. Chef's menu, presentation and explanation of what he was serving were awesome. Glad I found them for our special night out. Will be back soon.

Tami T.

Yelp
Excellent meal from start to finish! I don't think there was a crumb left on my plate at any time. I am the type who might get nervous when there is no menu and I am throwing caution to the wind. Chef's House kept me wanting more from course to course and thought of everything including palate cleansers. Don't forget to bring wine, but if you do, Bingham winery is right across the street. My only comment for improvement would be on the website or ability to make or change reservations. It's not the easiest to reach anyone.

Bart H.

Yelp
We had a great dinner there. Kangaroo! Wonderful time, we will return. The Chef came out and explained everything to us, zero complaints.

Amy K.

Yelp
Booked the Chef's Table for a team dinner/meeting. Food and service was outstanding!!! Can't wait to go back for some good cooking and the cozy ambiance.

Maria R.

Yelp
We did the wine pairing experience with Bingham wines and it was excellent! The food was superb, service, attention and everything in between was out of this world! It is a little bit expensive but definitely worth it.

Yelp
What a fabulous experience! My husband brought me on my birthday and it was so special. Loved the atmosphere; the food & more importantly Sage and his kids and chef. The food was incredible. Everything was unique and fresh. All depends on what they get in!! The menu changes daily with open seatings per night Tuesday-Saturday. The menu is fixed but, WOW!!! Dishes I was not sure about really impressed me and I was highly impressed. The price is fixed but you can bring your own wine. They walk thru in detail the course description & and answer any questions. Loved the intimate atmosphere. Come and be adventurous. They have only been open for 4 months, but I see this quickly becoming a favorite spot it for me; my family and so many others. This was an incredible experience and so special. I was reluctant to post this as I don't want it to become too popular but they deserve the review; the accolades and recommendation. This place is truly special!!

Yelp
locate on oak street in Roanoke, this is a converted house to a cozy restaurant. it is handicap accessible and parking is free. the chef introduces each course of the meal. it is a 4 course meal that the chef chooses but bring your own alcohol. this is an amazing experience to try deliciously prepared food right in front of you in a great atmosphere. for the set price it is a bargain to experience this. highly recommend you try. we are going back for sure.
