2024 Is the Year of the Snack | Eater Portland

"Known for nostalgic Mexican-style snacks, Luna Contreras’s Northeast Portland pop-up Chelo has built a reputation for items like gorditas, guacamole, and totopos (she even appeared on the Netflix show Snack vs. Chef). Moving from the Dame restaurant collective into the smaller Lil’ Dame prompted a menu shift toward smaller-format snacks that better fit the space, and Contreras emphasizes keeping many options affordable (under $20) to serve her loyal following of queer people of color." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

My wife put me on to this bakery she been coming here for years. So my mother in law sent me on a solo mission to get the small conchas. When I got there, they only had the large ones available. I told my wife they only have large conchas she said ask if they’re going to bake more of the little ones. So I asked the lady and she looked at me like I was dumb and said no. She could’ve sold me on the big ones. I had my $20 out ready to spend. I folded my little $20 and put it back in my pocket and split. I got the impression that she wasn’t going out her way. And come to find out my mother n law and wife meant for me to go to El Metate Bakery about a mile or 2 up the road on first st. My wife said Chelo’s only make the big ones. I was like, ah shoot no wonder they was looking at me crazy. But the ladies at the Chelo bakery could have said our big concha’s are good. They definitely looked at me like they wasn’t going out of their way for me to sell their concha’s. When I got to the El Metate Panaderia it smelled so good going in. they had way more pastries made, coffee ready, great customer service. I need to go ahead and rate El Metate as a matter of fact. My wife been going to Chelo for years so I thought to go. When I told her where I was she was like nah I thought you was at El Metate, i only go to Chelo out of desperation. lol

Friendly staff with a nice selection of freshly baked pan dulce! Is running errands and saw the bakery, so I stopped looking for pumpkin empanadas. Their baked goods are larger than I've seen at other bakeries. Their pumpkin empanadas are larger with a good balance of pumpkin filling and bread.

My favorite bakery since childhood! 💖 Authentic Mexican sweet bread, that is well baked and reminds me of my childhood years everytime I take a bite of it 😋 it honestly feels that it has been made with lots of care and love. The People are very welcoming and friendly. This is the only bakery my family has been loyal to ever since I could remember since their bread is unbelievably delicious!

Nice spot for homemade breads and tamales. The pieces are larger than in other bakeries. They also have a couple of tables in case you want to enjoy your food out there.

The smell from outside is amazing. The bread is large compared to other bakeries but I was disappointed. The bread I bought was hard and old. I was charged 16$ for 6 breads which I thought was expensive especially for old bread.
