If you know my husband and me, you know we are inveterate antique shoppers and flea market hounds. The thrill of the hunt for "whatever" keeps us interested and happy in this pursuit. On a recent weekend jaunt to NYC (where I was born and raised) ....we happened upon the Chelsea flea market on a beautiful early Sunday morning.
The market is set in a large fenced parking lot with lots of room for tables and tables of all manner of vintage merchandise. We spent a happy couple of hours meandering about checking out all the wares and talking to the vendors. Flea markets have the funniest, quirkiest and most story-telling vendors of any business.
As we were on our last "row" of tables, I espied some vintage jewelry that caught my eye. Within moments I noticed some vintage scarab bracelets in a case that I recognized instantly. One of my uncles, now deceased, was a jewelry manufacturer and designer in Rhode Island. The company had originally been started by his dad and although it has now been sold, it had been in the family for a very long time and certainly for most of my life thus far.
Sure enough, upon closer inspection, I realized these bracelets had indeed been designed and made by my uncle back in the 1950s and 1960s. They all still had the tiny gold tag identifying them attached to the bands. I had a lovely conversation with the vendor who was happy to know more about the provenance of these pieces.
And although I have a number of my uncle's pieces of jewelry, my husband surprised me by buying me one of the scarab bracelets to "rescue" it and return it to the family.
This flea market has a wide assortment of interesting things for the collector of most anything. If you're in the area on a Sunday, and want to spend a couple of interesting hours of browsing, I would recommend this flea market for sure.
