Best Indian Food in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"A departure from much of the Indian food found in San Diego, Chennai Tiffins focuses on South Indian cuisine, which packs a stronger spice punch and leans heavily upon vegetarian options. First-timers should spring for the dosa, which come loaded with different fillings." - Grace Cassidy

It was my first time eating here and I am disappointed. I won't be back. We ordered the 70mm dosa (which is a mistake on the menu, I guess it should be 70cm), the onion rava masala dosa and the regular masala dosa. Only 1 of of these 3 dosa's was decent. The 70mm dosa (photo included) was not crispy enough and it was all doughy. It was also hard to tear with the hands. Something was wrong with the kheer. Also because it's so big, it doesn't stay crispy for long..it gets soggy and some of it was extremely white, not cooked properly. Same with the onion rava masala dosa. My mom had 2 bites and passed it off to my dad, who unhappily ate it even though we told him not to. The only dosa that was okay was the regular masala dosa. The sambhar was good. The mehndu vada was also good. There are better dosa places in the valley, I won't be coming back here.

Wonderful service and yummy food. We have tried Chicken 65 and some tiffins, everything is delicious and kids liked them too.. We would surely revisit..

snehal S.

Google
We ordered onion rava masala dosa and masala dosa. Both tasted nice and the sambhar and Chutneys were tasty as well. Also ordered Gobi Manchurian which was crispy and tangy. For drinks we had mango lassi and Jigarthanda. Jigarthanda was a different drink which had almond gum and tasted like caramel latte in almond milk. It gave me boba tea vibes.

Google
Authentic South Indian food with kind people! The dosas are delicious and the filling is authentic with the correct masala. I also love that they label what’s vegan and gluten free for those with dietary restrictions. Highly recommend!

Google
Stopped by tonight and was really impressed. The staff was friendly and helped me pick what to order. The food came out hot and fresh — especially the idlis, which were so soft. Loved the filter coffee too. Clean place, great vibe, and amazing pricing. Highly recommend!

Google
If you’re vegetarian or love South Indian food, this place is a gem. Their menu has a lot of variety, and everything I tried was flavorful. The masala dosa and pongal combo were standouts. It’s rare to find this level of authenticity in Woodland Hills. Will definitely be coming back!

Google
Excellent authentic south Indian food. We ordered the Rana onion, dosa, plain dosa Uttapam, filter, coffee, idli vada. Everything tasted just delicious and homemade! We can’t wait to come back and try the other items out. The servers were very pleasant and efficient. Definitely recommend this place to all good South Indian food lovers

namita S.

Google
Chennai Tiffins is absolutely fantastic! The food is fresh, authentic, and bursting with South Indian flavor — especially the dosas and chutneys. The service is friendly and fast, even during busy hours. Highly recommend this place for anyone craving real home-style comfort food!

Priscilla N.

Yelp
This is definitely one of the best places for authentic South Indian cuisine in LA! Everything tasted fresh and close to home. Delicious food & kind people! The non-veg thali meal and medhu vada were our favorites but we'll be back for more!

Yelp
I haven't been here in two years when they had more of a ghost kitchen concept. Now it's more of a sit down restaurant thats much improved. Is it now two restaurants in one? When I sat down I received two menus - Chennai Tiffins (South Indian vegetarian cuisine) and Biryani Factory (meat dishes). I had the vegetarian thali. The medu vada and chapati were freshly cooked. The curries were hot and well-seasoned. The serving of rice was HUGE! To be honest, I don't know every dish that was included but it was all very delicious. I also had a good mango lassi. Service was really nice, as well. They were kind and checked up on me. I was unsure if I had to pay at the desk but they come over with a tablet so you pay with square. (My anxiety is figuring out what the protocol to pay at restaurants because I don't want to look like a newb, lol.)

Yelp
Chennai Tiffin may seem like it only caters to what we usually think of as South Indian food, since most Indian restaurants tend to lean toward North Indian menus. To my surprise, this place had plenty of North Indian dishes too. They offer a full line of appetizers, drinks, and desserts, including the very famous Gulab Jamuns. They do have outdoor seating, but keep in mind service is not provided outside. Our food arrived very quickly, which was nice, but what caught me off guard was that there is no AC inside the restaurant. The portions were on the smaller side, and the taste overall was pretty average. Maybe I'm just being a critique because I tend to compare Indian food here to how it's actually served in India. The dosas were a decent size, and we also tried the dahi vada. Just note that it is not the typical Gujarati or North Indian style dahi vada. It was more like medu vada served with yogurt. The samosas were extremely average in taste, which was disappointing, because I always judge an Indian restaurant by their samosas since they're such a staple. Among all the dishes, our favorite was the Palak Paneer, which stood out the most. The service, however, was excellent. Everyone we interacted with was courteous and professional. Overall, I'm inclined to give it four stars, though my expectations for Indian restaurants are always high.

Yelp
This is the second time trying this place and both times, they did not disappoint. The first time, hubby had the goat curry and asked for spicy. It was very flavorful, the goat was tender but lacked the heat. I had the Non Veg Thali and was impressed with the portions as well as the South Indian flavors! We returned today and shared the masala dosa and the mutton curry special. We told them about the lack of spiciness on the previous order so they didn't hold back!! It was nothing short of amazing! So grateful we have a place so close to us instead of making the long drive to Artesia. We will keep returning to try everything on the menu - almost everything - still undecided on the Chinese offerings though.

Yelp
Pretty solid South Indian food in the valley! I had such a great meal at Chennai Tiffin. They have both a separate vegetarian and a non vegetarian food and have separate menus for each and both looked good to us! We went with the non-vegetarian menu and tried a variety of dishes. We started with the chili chicken which was great and super crispy and they were very generous with regard to the portion size. For our main meal, we had a chicken chettinand curry and a fish curry with Naan. I think they could have given more meat in the curries, but curries were flavorful and tasty. We also had a Briyani which was great. The restaurant was clean and service was quick and parking is also pretty easy at this place!

Yelp
Very nice authentic south Indian food! We were craving a good dosa and this was the right spot! Sambhar was so tasty and dosa also came with coconut, peanut and tomato chutney. Their nizam chicken biryani was to die for! We also tried idli which was served steaming hot, it was delicious. Definitely recommend their filter coffee. Service is friendly and efficient. Plenty of parking too.

Yelp
Some of the best Indian food I've ever had. There's a veg and a non-veg menu. The chicken tikka kababs were juicy, smoky and perfectly spicy. Also got some dhal and veggie korma. Sweet lassi for dessert. Will definitely be back, their lunch special looks super delicious.

Prabh S.

Yelp
The food us so great. I love it .my go to place for my meals. The food ,ambience and authenticity is great.

Yelp
Food was delicious. Have seen this place for years but never tried it. So glad I did. Will definitely go back.

Yelp
Wonder goat curry. Must try if you get a chance. Service is a bit slow but we get want we wanted. Chicken biriyani was very good, small portion. Clean and simple setup inside.
google avatar

Daniel P.

Yelp
They serve colorful fryums as the little pre-meal snack that really sets the tone for a tasty food experience. We got garlic naan (7/10) and bhatura (10/10) to go with the Veg Kuruma (8/10) and the Chettinadu chicken curry (9.5/10), plus the somasa chat (10/10) for an appetizer. All of them I would order again but I would also want to try everything else on the menu! This is my first time coming here and I will definitely come again. Probably the best South Indian food I've ever had! Service was pleasant and brief. To the point and they made sure you were happy with the food. It's actually very cute inside with a soothing aesthetic and plenty of seating.

Yelp
Absolutely loved this spot! Great flavor and taste of all the food we got - excited to go back and try more things!

Yelp
Same owner, updated menu and dining experience. COVID provided CT an opportunity to change from a traditional sit down, table service to an expanded menu with different cuisines ordered from a kiosk. The flavors were still there for me. I just wish the dosa was warmer. I'm wondering if it was made earlier because it was room temperature. The sambar and chutneys were so so good. Still one of my faves. What would I give to live close-by to this gem? The vibe here is really laid back. Clean and simple. Hope you enjoy it!

Yelp
Really smooth experience ordering over the phone. They send you a link to pay to your mobile phone. Then, it's ready for you to pickup. Their food is always delicious, and their staff is very courteous, and helpful. I was in the process of ordering 4 orders of idlis, and 2 orders of vadas, and the woman on the phone taking my order suggested that I order 4 orders of the idli-vada combo to save some money.

Yelp
Please be patient, this is a long review. Let me start off saying I'm usually not one to write reviews, but I just had to share my negative experience today. Meanwhile, please don't come here with your families, the food will actually make you sick. I am writing a serious review because I am concerned for people's health. I will never step into their establishment and will tell everyone I know not to eat at this restaurant ever. I need the restaurant owner to know how badly they are running their restaurant. I am attaching proof of purchase for legitimacy. Me, my sister and my dad came out for a nice lunch to eat some biriyani yesterday (Sat ~ 11:35) This was probably the worst mistake ever because I'm still suffering from the health consequences the next day. At the iPad kiosk, the biriyanis we wanted to order were showing as sold out. We asked the only girl working at the store from the register if the biriyanis were already sold out at 11:30? This was weird. She said whatever food is showing on the iPad is what's available. We started looking at the menu for other foods. But after 5 mins, she came back and told us to check the iPad again to order for what we inquired about. So we changed our order and ordered the biriyanis. After we got the food, both biriyanis were smelling just a little weird, like reheated old food. There was an obvious smell, or least it didn't smell like it was made recently. That should have been my first warning but I didn't think too much out of it and we started eating. But we couldn't finish even one of the ordered dishes, we just lost our appetite. So we went straight home to save the food to eat later. My stomach was uneasy so I didn't immediately eat the food at home. We put the food in the fridge for max 1 hour and when I took both biriyanis out and reheated them, it had such a bad stench, it made me gag. The food had actually went bad, and I had to throw it the trash outside my house. Not even 30 mins after that, all three of my family members, including myself, threw up and had an upset stomach for rest of the evening. None of us had dinner, we were so uneasy and felt sick. I ended up waking three times during the night because I had an upset stomach, my stomach was burning and I felt like throwing up even more. Still now, this morning when I'm writing this review, my stomach burns so bad and I feel sick. I am considering going to urgent care if I don't feel better in a few hours. I know this was the only food to cause these symptoms because we didn't have anything before the restaurant and didn't eat anything after the restaurant. I'm extremely disappointed in the exploitation of the owners by serving the customer not just bad food, but unsafe food. So overall, we paid $85 dollars to end up throwing the food away and suffering from pain. Summarized Review: Apollo Fish Fry - (so much Red 40 food coloring that it's bound to cause stomach problems) Butter Chicken Masala --- (it was fine) Garlic Naan - (it was rubbery, but fine in the spiel of things) Thalappakatti Goat Biryani - (served us biriyani that was on the verge of spoiling) Natu Kodi Chicken Biryani -- (served us biriyani that was on the verge of spoiling)

Yelp
Their food is SO delicious, they have tons of vegan and gluten free options and they were so nice. Their prices are also very reasonable. Thank you so much!

Yelp
TLDR: Dirty - literally dirty - food, staff members that are either unavailable or too available when watching you pay and tip, underestimated wait times, and a bundle of child-parent disciplining experiences. If you enjoy any of these on a late afternoon, then Chennai Tiffins is for you! The food is acceptable - better if priced slightly lower or increased portions and even better if there is some quality control. ------ I stopped by Chennai Tiffins for a quick meal, unsure of what to expect. The location itself looked clean from the outside, but the dim environment on a mid-afternoon gave it a gloomy ambiance. I wasn't sure what to order when I walked in, since I wasn't greeted and didn't notice the self-service kiosks on the side. Eventually a young gentleman walked out to help me and navigate the self-kiosk menu - it was quite a confusing user experience even though I was tech savvy. I appreciated the help, but I felt very uncomfortable when he continued to stand there after I was paying and watching me tip... I mentioned that I was in a rush, and he promised that the food would be finished in 5 minutes - a delight since I only had 5-7 minutes or I'd be late for work. I ordered a chicken biriyani, and the order took TEN minutes. I was already in a rush and more panicking than disappointed and hungry at this point. I ended up walking out to return since the server didn't hand me my food with utensils or napkins. The children and parents (including staff members) that were screaming and running in and out of the building also didn't help calm my nerves. I didn't have time to eat, so I let the entree sit for a few hours until I finally had time to enjoy it. I have to admit for a $15 entree, it was quite disappointing in size despite them having stuffed it. The bowls were an average size, and the pieces of chicken were small. I have to admit that the dish had everything I would've expected from an Indian dish, and it was pretty tasty for fast food. My only concern is that the food did appear dirty, most notably the egg which had pieces of lint (?) on it. I'm not sure where it came from, but there's something dirty going on behind the kitchen counter for sure...

Yelp
Best Food , good Service , authentic Indian Halal Food ..... very clean place , Thank you guys .....

Yelp
We came here on New Years Day. You could see that they were slightly struggling to balance the workload between serving the customers inside the restaurant and fulfilling online orders. It is a small restaurant but enough to hold 4-5 incoming families. We had gotten dosa, coffee, and chole / bhatura. The food was really delicious. I enjoyed the spice and flavors of the food. I would definitely go back.

Yelp
Obsessed with this place. If you love southern Indian food this is the place for you. If you love a good dosa don't look any further. I think I'm single-handedly putting their children through college- I'm there so often. So happy they decided to turn it back into a fast-casual restaurant!! 10 stars, not five!
google avatar

Spandana S.

Yelp
Awesome and authentic place with plenty of South Indian options. Service was acceptable, no complaints considering there was only one girl at the front managing customers and packing chutneys. Place was big enough and clean but for some reason they weren't doing dine in and were only accepting take out orders. I'd recommend a stop here if you want South Indian food.
google avatar

Tuan S.

Yelp
It's not what it used to be. You have to first order and wait for the food. No serving at the table. The taste was mediocre. The staff was not that friendly. Ordered Andhra Meal which was supposed to come with biriyani but it was missing.

Yelp
I still remember the last time I came to this restaurant; it was a long time ago and I have not forgotten their interesting menu. At that time, the restaurant only served a variety of south Indian dishes. This time I noticed a modification in its offerings. Under the Chennai Tiffins sign, it also says "Cloud Kitchens". The restaurant not only serves south Indian delicacies, but also has franchises for seven other eateries. This is a welcome find. What this means is that you can try multiple items from different restaurants in one place. The additional options are Chili my soul, Biriyani factory, Deez wings, Willie's barbecue smokehouse, Hennbachi Grill, Sugar bowl tea house and King Crab House. I ordered from Chennai Tiffins. My choice was the idly (savory rice cake, the cakes are made by steaming a batter consisting of fermented black lentils and rice) and vada combination. It came with two idlies and one Medha vada (a crispy donut shaped fritter made using Urad lentils as the main ingredient and other Indian spices, crisp on the exterior and soft in the interior). The vada is spicier and has a stronger flavor than its North Indian cousin. I thoroughly enjoyed this vada with the fresh coconut chutney. The idly was nice and soft and married well with the accompanying sambar (lentil based vegetables stew cooked outside sign outside sign of additional options outside sign of additional options with pigeon and tamarind broth). The dish also came with a peanut sauce (very South Indian) and a savory tomato sauce. All in all, it was a satisfying appetizer lunch. Service was superb.

Nena C.

Yelp
My first time at the restaurant. Service was good. I don't remember the name of what I ordered, it was chicken in coconut curry sauce. The sauce was excellent, too spicy hot, but it was my fault I should have asked. Anyway, the issue is the amount of chicken pieces was equivalent to one small boneless thigh chopped into small bite size. The server recommended naan or rice with it but I turned it down. I changed my mind when I realised the sauce was just too spicy hot for my taste. The naan was just chewy hard particularly at the edges. The food could be better if at a minimum they used at least decent amount of chicken meat and decent fluffy naan.

Kenny And Janet C.

Yelp
Start off ordering from a tablet and see an expansive menu -- the descriptions need improvement. Lamb Biryani and mysore masala dosa for the win! Reasonably priced and a flavor explosion in your mouth. The lamb was tender and all was very filling too. We will be back.

Zin Z.

Yelp
Authentic Indian flavors with fair pricing! The food is delicious and the spices are perfectly balanced.
google avatar

Abhinay S.

Yelp
Oh boy the service was so bad. One the chef was not in and they still kept all the menu items and it was a clusterf*ck! There were people waits for an hour for their food. It was scene from nightmare. Hope they get anew management. The food is awesome! Service is shit! Ordering system is shit! They need an intervention.

Yelp
Writing a review of their catering services specifically. Got in touch with them about their Live Dosa package, which I hired for my 40th birthday celebrations. The entire process was simple and excellent. The options are legit and this isn't watered down for Western palates. Everything was authentic and fresh and delicious. I cannot recommend them more if you are catering a party!

Yelp
Planned a Dosas & Mimosas date night with the bf! This restaurant was such a good, reliable, staple for Indian food! I wouldn't say the quality or flavor blew me away or had any unique kick, BUT there was a huge variety (not your typical tiki masala restaurant), food was very enjoyable, solid flavor profile, incredulously inexpensive, and the portion size was enormous (we def over ordered. The following prob would feed 4-6) ! I'm Chinese American, first gen, and I don't normally eat Indian food other than your basic tiki masala or sag paneer, but I absolutely loved the variety even tho I haven't heard of half the things I ordered. Thought I'd mention to help encourage anyone who's on the fence about trying new dishes from this restaurant! Our Food ordered from fav to least fav-------------- 1) Tomato Uthappam ($8.99) - similar to a soft tomato onion naan. Our favorite. Came with this green coconut curry (I'm prob a rookie in Indian food but I didn't enjoy this curry) 2) Vegetable Kothu Parotta ($9.99) - chopped up strips of naan/scallion pancake-like-dough, stir fried with juicy tomatoes, onions, peas and sauce/spices. Came with a vegetable minestrone-like-soup (did not care for the soup). 3) MLA Dosa ($8.99) - Dosa stuffed with Upma (delicious thick, white porridge made with rice flour). Came with a tomato curry (delicious), a yogurt tzatziki-like-curry (delicious), and (forgive my description) but a thousand island colored curry which was not our fav. 4) Upma ($7.99) - thick white porridge made with rice flour. Came with a vegetable minestrone like soup (did not care for the soup). 5) Idly and Vada Combo ($5.99) - did not need to order this as both were bland & we didn't enjoy the crust as much. Total 2 pieces. Idly: white rice flour bread appetizer. Vada: savory fried donuts.

Mrugesh R.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised with new ambiance, food is back to its quality and service few good chances have been made. Definitely recommended if people had stopped going to restart..

Yelp
So unfortunate! I hadn't been here for a while. And this place used to be very good unique find. However, they changed their business model and transformed into a confusing mish mosh resembling a carnival of several menus in one location-it's no longer just Chennai Tiffins. It has become more like a food court serving various unrelated foods and no longer exclusively a vegetarian/vegan Indian food location. You're forced to order from a screen and no guidance or suggestions on foods--so know exactly what you want. Oddly the computer screens slow down the process instead of streamlining it. Sadly, I walked out and settled for Chipotle,

Dev B.

Yelp
Good food good service. My brother ordered a variety of things and the experience was enjoyable.

Yelp
Food is delicious . The prices are cheaper . Filter coffee is too good and the pongal

Yelp
Not our first time coming here, but came here after a very long time. The place is in a shopping complex with ample of parking space available. After getting our head grinned at Honda which is 5 min far, we decided to come here for a good lunch. To our surprise, there is no dining in option. They do have outside dining with little to no shade. But when the temperatures are 100F &up plus no breeze, eating on patio, Hell no. They are short on staff, which means increased wait time on take out orders. We ordered their:- Idli- It was good. Coconut chutney was too sour. Spicy chilli dosa- Damn it was spicy & salty. Good one. Paneer butter masala- Better stick with South Indian dishes. The curry was too sweet tasting. Samosa- 3 small pieces which are like finger appetizers good for only 1 serving. Schezwan fried rice- OMG this was the star dish. It tasted & smelled same as the ones you get on the streets of India. Paneer dosa- emm Not a fan. Filter coffee- Ok ok. Overall, so what they have done, reduced the serving quantity of every item with the same price. Our total bill was for $75 which is pricey cum less quantity of the dishes individually. The server told us that the curry will come with rice, but we did not get any in take out.

Yelp
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this place! Almost don't want to give this secret away ..... Having spent 3 weeks traveling and cooking in India, I have a special affinity for their food. I love trying new Indian restaurants and this one hit the mark. Vegetarian and tiffin. So fun! Many different dishes to try on the tiffin platter. All were delicious in their own way, and spicy to boot. I appreciate that they don't dummy down the kick. And it sneaks up on you in a way I LOVE!!! Beautiful presentation and served with rice, naan and dosa. Dosa is ADDICTIVE. Prices ridiculously reasonable and service friendly. Nice, clean decor. GO, GO, GO. I'll see you there.

Audrey Or Randy G.

Yelp
A great authentic Indian cuisine restaurant. Excellent service and tasty food. Can't wait to try other dishes.

Sonu D.

Yelp
Food: stale, masala dosa - potatoes had turned bad. Rasam was dark brown color, bhindi was burnt, Andhra Thai was the worst, none of items served were good. Service: They are called cloud kitchen so basically human touch is gone. Every thing is premade and served out if the crockpots, I mean everything except for dosa. You order using a machine, they call your order and you pick up your food, water and everything. No one comes to check if you need anything or if the food was good it not. Ambiance: sad. Forgot the basics that eating/serving food is an experience. You are not just serving food, you are serving an experience. In India, there is reason we eat off banana leaves, and with hands. There is a purpose of cooking fresh and colorful food. There is a purpose of serving food with love. None of that was there in restaurant. It didn't have any music on!!! If the purpose was to dump bad food in your tummy and never come back, then the purpose was well accomplished! I used to love this restaurant. The food was delicious and service was good as well

Brian K.

Yelp
The food was good. The one person working in the restaurant seemed disconnected from me or the couple that didn't stay. I feel like the tables were not very clean. There was zero vibe in the place to entice me to come back. And I love Indian cuisine.

Yelp
I was looking for something comforting and hot to eat in a cold day, so I decided to give it a try. First the stuff was very nice and informative they explain about the food and help me decide what to order and before the food came the gave me a taste from there soup that was amazing when the food came it was everything that I wanted, hot and yummy. Really recommend
google avatar

Abir D.

Yelp
No doubt the food was great. But the pictures in the order machine was misleading. Picture was showing gulab jamun for the mutton biryani combo but it came with 1 only. Then there was no option to add extra gulab jamun.

Yelp
Great Dosa and Filter coffee. the best south indian breakfast in LA area. authentic taste. all chutneys with super tasty tea and coffee. great service and they serve timely. they open 830 which is actual time for breakfast. i just loved them. owner is also welcoming and she cares about her customers. thank you

Yelp
Relaxing to be there early weekend morning when the crowd is less .. enjoyed the all you can eat breakfast today with Pongal, Idli, vada, dosa , puri with sides

Raj R.

Yelp
We went there a while back. Everything was ok but pricey although inflation has madw wating out in general pricey It's a bit of a drive for us and not motivated to revisit.

Subhra G.

Yelp
Poor service, lots of times menu items are not available or finished but allows orders. refund issues be careful. Server insists on a replacement dish.

Yelp
Really good masala dosas!!! Came here on a Sunday evening this place is located in the LA Fitness Nordstrom's Rack next to the Starbucks. As far as the food it was good. I loved the masala dosa, good amount of potatoes and I liked how they were on the side. Really good crepe very crispy. The service sucked though the guy serving us didnt even get us glasses even though he said he would bring some over. I ended up grabbing them from another table and I had to grab water from the other table. All in all good food but definitely can improve on service. Would recommend and would come back!!

Yelp
We wanted to celebrate our friend's birthday during Memorial day weekend. We went to the Malibu Hindu temple and on our way back home we stopped here for a late lunch Sunday afternoon. Atmosphere: Interior is a mix between fast casual and a cafe. It feels like a tricked up cafe place in Madras. Colors scheme is unlike any other Desi restaurant. If not for the spicy aroma, you can easily mistake this for a fruit juice/smoothie place. There is adequate seating for 10 parties or so. Parking is shared with a bunch of businesses at this large complex. Food: We ordered the following: Butter Dosa ($7.49) Poori with Bhajji ($9.99) 2 orders of Idly ($5.99 each) Dahi vada ($5.99) Sambhar vada ($6.99) Onion Karapodi Dosa ($8.49) 1 order Upma ($7.99) 2 orders of Masala Chai ($2.99 each) 1 order sweet lassi ($2.99) 1 order Idly (to go) Total with taxes came to $80.89. Butter Dosa was good. Ian was famished by the time we commenced eating, so he finished his Dosa in record time. Onion Karapodi Dosa was full of flavor. It was not spicy at all. Upma was delicious. I always eat my Upma doused with fresh squeezed Lime and a little bit of sugar. Even without the additions, the Upma tasted fresh and authentic like how I remember back in the day. This was definitely the highlight of my meal. Coconut chutney and Peanut chutney were very tasty. They did not have any heat, which was to the Mrs.'s liking. Poori, Idly, Dahi Vada, Sambhar were just OK. There was nothing special going on with them. Tomato chutney was not good. Portions on Idly and Vada were not adequate for the price. Drinks, Dosa's, Upma, and Poori were priced appropriately. Service: Service by the Telugu speaking employee was excellent. He got us napkins, extra plates, Sugar for the Upma, etc., cleared away our empty plates as we were finished with them, recommended Masala chai, etc. He was polite and knowledgeable in his interactions. Service by other staff members was typical Desi restaurant kind. They acknowledge you as a Dollar figure occupying the chair. "Dollar is going to be generated with or without service". Overall, just because I liked the Upma, Dosa's and chutney's, I am going to recommend this restaurant. If you temper down your expectations on service, you can have a good Madras cafe experience.

Yelp
What in the WORLD?! Was our reaction after the first bite. The WORST food I've ever had in all in my life. It was actually painful to eat. I couldn't continue due to unbearable amount of salt, horrible flavor, and high risk of getting food poisoning (hoping I don't get it) because of their poorly cooked food. Awful experience, ruined my dinner and there was nothing I could do to notify a manager/owner for at least a refund or a replacement because we did takeout. Tried calling to let them know about the situation but no one answers. Customer service: non existent. The lady at the register was not helpful at all, she seemed to be miserable to be there. Weird atmosphere in the restaurant. They sell random pizzas, asian food, bubble tea? Bad sign #1. Their rice is just SAD, poorly reheated and its not even the rice you would use for Biryani or Indian food? It was more like the rice you find in microwavable rice boxes? The vegetable Biryani was SO salty that it was impossible to eat. Had to throw out $40 worth of food. Salty, frozen samosas, frozen stale Naan that they can't even properly reHEAT(poorly heated microwavable foods). Do not go here or spend any money. Reviews here are clearly old, inaccurate, outdated, or MISLEADING. A 4 year old would have cooked better and ran a restaurant better than the two ladies I saw. One was on her phone, other one at the front just couldn't care less. Clearly they DO NOT CARE what they are cooking (cleanliness, no effort at all in even trying to heat up pre cooked food) or what kind of bad impression they are leaving. I would like them to try their own food. HORRIBLE. Indian food is amazing and this place should be ashamed and closed down by now. Now I have to find another Indian restaurant to have a normal Biryani. Never has food be so bad in my life that I have to go to another restaurant! Lastly, these people prepare your food and work the counter with NO MASK. That is enough of a red flag and blaring message of I don't CARE to the customer.
