Texas-Focused Cherry Block Smokehouse is Bringing Pecan-Smoked Barbecue to Houston’s Garden Oaks - Eater Houston

"Texas chef Felix Flores has lived several lives within the food world — and now, he’s using his experience as a rancher, butcher, sommelier, chef, and restaurant operator to revive his smokehouse in Garden Oaks that oozes of the Lone Star State. Formerly located in Downtown’s Bravery Chef Hall food court, Cherry Block Smokehouse is undergoing a revival in Garden Oak’s Stomping Grounds shopping area, where Flores is already serving up pecan-smoked Texas-style barbecue and Gulf Coast cuisine, including po’ boys, hush puppies, boudin, and his signature brisket gumbo. The self-described “counter-service steakhouse,” which opened on September 6, is taking on an intentional “Texans for Texans” approach that will offer quality ingredients at an affordable price, according to a release, which is no surprise given that Flores has been credited with bringing a “ranch-to-table” dining experience in Houston where meats and foods are sourced from within the state. The 2,600-square-foot smokehouse, which pays homage to Florez’s family with displays of old family photos and heirlooms, will feature a market area, where guests can watch live butchery and select meat sourced from Florez’s family meat distribution company, Falcon Lake Farms, for take-home; plus a full bar, where guests can order cocktails, beer, and wine from a list curated by Florez. For those dining in, executive chef Jordan Economy, formerly of Doris Metropolitan and Dak n Bop, and chef de cuisine Melissa Hart, have shaped a menu with Texas and Louisiana-inspired dishes like brisket mac and cheese; loaded baked potatoes; barbecue staples like beef brisket, pork ribs, and sausage; plus hand-cut meats, including pork chops, New York Strips, rib-eyes, and filet mignons. Guests can seat themselves at the available banquettes, high-top tables, bar area, or the picnic tables outside. The restaurant, which joins other food establishments in the area, including Fat Creamery and Rooster & Rice, also plans to host brunch and daily specials later in the year, according to a statement by Florez." - Brittany Britto Garley

Amazing service and amazing food. I can't say enough about the burger!! The flavor of the meat and the fresh bun was beyond description. Of course we tried the brisket..also 10/10...the crawfish egg rolls and loaded mac n cheese. For a finale...the chocolate pecan cake..heaven sang!!!

Cocktails were very good. Recommend them. Food was terrible. Brisket was good enough. The mac & cheese was just inedible. They broke the roux, leaving the noodles swimming in grit and grease. They overcooked my husband's steak. Our friend ordered a burger and said it was great. So stop in for a drink and a burger but NOTHING ELSE.

What a terrific hamburger, it’s as good as a burger will get. The meat is delicious and full of flavor, wonderful cheese and an outstanding bun. Has to be one of the best in the city.

This restaurant adds another bbq restaurant to the newly cropping up mixed use/multi restaurant food courts and this time, to the Garden Oaks/Independence Heights neighborhoods. While this bbq restaurant has standard bbq entrees on the menu, there are a few new and never seen before items that are definitely worth trying! This Cherry Block has some items that the flagship store in Old Town Katy has, such as seasonings, jams and snacks; it also has the main main focus on food and drinks. This not-so-typical bbq joint boasts steaks, but also has house-made items such as gumbo, sausage, crawfish egg rolls (aughhhh...must-try) and smoked boudain. It also raises the bar offering mixed drinks with house-made mixes and unique takes on classic mixed drinks, such as bone broth to the Bloody Mary's for an extra flavor and nutrient kick! I ordered two, Three-Meat plates (all plates come with two sides). I had their: brisket, house sausage, boudain, chicken, pork ribs with mac and cheese, bloody mary greens (don't fret as if you like vegetable beef soup or beef cabbage soup, it tasted just as remarkable, but has bacon in it, I believe), house fries (very similar to seasoning of the likes of Chili's) and corn bread (this was more like a soufflé...corn bread mix, typical peppers and probably an egg as a binder, but nonetheless, FANTASTIC!). You be the judge, so do give this a try and if that's just not enough, the entire collection of restaurants share a commons area, similar to that of the farmers market on Airline Avenue, so you kids are going to be free to run around, yet stay corralled within the business, not to mention spacious seating from picnic tables outside to comfortably cushioned seating inside! To top this off, there is a mixed beverage stand within the commons, so getting a mixed drink from the mixologist is just footsteps away!

Go try this new place! Yummy burgers and BBQ. The staff was so nice. Great seating outside with a place for the littles to run around. Don't forget to buy a funny t-shirt

Loved it! I've heard so much about the burger and it was everything I expected. Mac and Cheese was delicious, also tried the brisket and ribs, smoked well and tasted great. Went for the Pecan pie Chocolate Cake and it was incredible. Overall a great experience. Highly recommend, can't wait to try more of the menu, will be back very soon!!!

I had the mushroom swiss burger which was really good. I ordered some ribs and brisket to go . I will update on those later.

Ribs were good but had way too much pepper, and I am a firm believer in heavy pepper on bbq and smoked meats. Moist brisket was not very flavorful and fairly dry for "moist" cuts. The cole slaw had great flavor but was dry and a very VERY small portion. A friend of ours got the cob salad and said tonight her salad was totally different than when she had eaten here earlier in the week. Seems as though they might be ironing out some issues based on some of the other reviews I read. My biggest complaint and the reason for only 2 stars is on a Friday evening having ONE person behind the counter taking drink and food orders was very frustrating. I am a very patient person but standing in line to place an order for over 20 minutes to place an order for 2 toddlers and myself is unacceptable. What makes this wait even worse is that they saw that the line was backed up out of the door into the courtyard to the point that they had to start asking people to shut the door over and over. Why not have someone grab the portable order taking device so you have 2 people taking orders for a temporary time frame a LOT sooner than what they did tonight. I don't mind waiting for good food, but the food in my opinion was not worth standing in a line for over 20 minutes. For a first time visit this was a horrible experience and if it weren't for the courtyard where my kids can play we likely would never go back. However, there are several other food options going in so unless the cherry block can fix some of the issues mentioned above and, that I've seen in other reviews they are likely going to lose business. My husband was not with me on this visit to the stomping grounds so it is a possibility we will try again and I would update this review. PS the person responding to these reviews is very sassy which does not give me the impression that the owners are interested in taking these reviews to heart and making some adjustments to give their customers a better overall experience.
