Hot San Diego Restaurant Openings You May Have Missed, November 2025 | Eater San Diego

"After years cooking whatever local fisherfolk brought to his Dockside Fish pop-up at Tuna Harbor Dockside Market, chef Marcus Twilegar takes the helm at his own splashy American izakaya, where the menu swings from sushi rolls and kimchi flatbread topped with shoyu-braised beef cheek to spiny lobster gyoza, kanpachi sashimi in blood orange aguachile, charcoal-grilled swordfish belly skewers, and a uni Okinawa potato dumpling served in a spiky shell. I’m drinking playful cocktails like the Satsuma Mandarin (Sabe sake with blanco tequila, yuzu, and satsuma) or the Lychee served in a glass fish, and for something bolder, the Nigoreo riffs on an espresso cocktail with Oreo-washed nigori sake. He’ll still man Dockside Fish on Saturday mornings." - Helen I. Hwang

Google
Cherryfish was great overall, we decided to check it out a few days after it opened. Cocktails were great to start. We got a few appetizers and a few sushi rolls. The only critiques would be for lack of salt on the edamame, and missing a traditional tempura dipping sauce. The sushi rolls were the highlight and would come back for those. The atmosphere was very chic and modern, great for a date night.

My lady and I had the absolute pleasure of attending the grand opening last week, and we’re still raving about it. From the moment we walked in, everything was flawless—the food was outstanding, the service impeccable, and the presentation elevated every dish to a work of art. I’ve been to plenty of restaurant openings over the years, but I’ve never seen one executed with this level of precision, warmth, and attention to detail. They didn’t just meet expectations; they shattered them. The menu is exceptional from start to finish—creative, delicious, and perfectly balanced. Considering the quality of ingredients, execution, and overall experience, the pricing is remarkably fair (honestly, almost a steal). If you’re someone who appreciates thoughtful plating and a team that clearly goes above and beyond, this is your place. Hands down one of the best dining experiences we’ve had in a long time. We’ll be back—often.

A big group of us went last night and I have nothing but excellent things to say about it. Food, service, ambiance 10/10 The food quality and taste is on par with what you would get at a Michelin star restaurant. Space inside is chic and beautiful, very warm and trendy. Staff was very friendly and attentive Happy to see a place of this caliber open in PB

Google
The service was solid and all the details were on point for a relaxed, fancy night out. Each of the dishes had a unique feature to them. I’d come back a second time to try some of the dishes I had to pass on this time. We were happily surprised by the portion sizes.

Google
Pro sushi, thoughtful drinks, wonderful vibe. Could be up-and-coming for the SD food scene for sure. Great for couples or small to medium groups. The owner is very invested in making this an exceptional place and it shows.

Yelp
It's about time something like this opened in PB. Phenomenal food, and excellent service. Ambiance 10/10

Yelp
What a great experience all around! I had the swordfish, lobster and the toro roll. All were very delicious. Swordfish and lobster were cooked perfectly so good and smoky. I loved the presentation and taste of the cocktails I ordered. The Shishito came with a fun smoke bubble and the Nigoreo (Oreo soaked Nigori sake / espresso martini ) was absolutely AMAZING! Service was great. Ambiance was fun and vibey. Will Definately Return!!

Yelp
Cherryfish is such a great addition to the Pacific Beach neighborhood! The ambiance and service set it apart from everything else. All of the staff is knowledgeable, attentive and welcoming. My personal favorites are the kimchi flatbread, spiny lobster rolls, toro roll and wagyu roll.

Yelp
Cherry Fish is exactly what PB needed - super creative cocktails, a funky vibe, and insanely good food. The toro and yellowtail roll were my absolute favorites, so fresh and flavorful. The wagyu fried rice blew my mind too, especially with that ramen-style soft-poached egg on top (never seen that before!). Our group also loved the kimchi pizza - the dough is actually made with kimchi, which is such a fun twist. The chef came out to chat with us each time we were there and you can tell he puts so much thought and care into everything. He said brunch is coming soon, and I'm already excited. Finally, a high-quality sushi spot in PB with a legit vibe.

Yelp
The food was incredible. I don't leave reviews but had to hear. The ambience amazing. This is the best go to date night spot in the beach cities. Must orders: - kimchi flatbread - wagu fried rice - kanpachi sushi roll - chicken katau (I know but do it) - short rib tomahawk The food and cocktails are amazing I was so amazed and can't believe this place exists in PB. It feels like it belongs on an invite only list in Brooklyn NY. Go. Enjoy. You'll love it.

Yelp
Cherryfish has opened where a longtime cantina followed by a short-lived wagyu restaurant used to be in the PB neighborhood. One of the owners also operates the cafe right next door on the corner of the street. During my visit, the outdoor front patio wasn't fully set up yet. The dining area layout didn't change much with a bar in the back right of the room. A central countertop and multiple small tables provided the rest of the seating capacity. The interior of this place has always been intricately decorated, and the revamp was no exception. There was plenty of hanging greenery, and the wall murals were creative. The grand opening was late last week in the middle of the rainstorms that hit the SD area. Because of the precipitation, the opening night crowd was likely much less than anticipated. I was able to snag an empty spot at the bar that could seat about 10 people. The menu concept was Japanese fusion with about half of the offerings split between appetizers and shareable small plates. Sushi, sides, large plates, and skewers cooked over charcoal made up the rest of the categories. I initially ordered the Swordfish Belly Skewers and Spicy Lobster Rolls which were two of the ten 'Share' choices. Perhaps it was the day one jitters, but the kitchen was very slow in preparing my food. It couldn't have been due to a large volume of orders because the dining area was not even half full. I think the staff noticed the long wait and offered a complimentary dish of Shishito Peppers to pass the time. The peppers were blistered nicely, however I only ate a few as I wasn't a fan of the texture. After half an hour, the two dishes were brought out. The skewers came as a pair, and each had a tranche of grilled swordfish belly. Tangerine, mizuna, and beet char siu were the other ingredients that decorated the plate. The fish was cooked well while the tangerine's fruitiness provided a refreshing citrus contrast. The rolls came as a duo on sesame brioche buns. Instead of New England lobster as the seafood filling, local spiny lobster was used as the protein. Yuzu tartar and crispy leeks were the toppings. The tartar was heavy and obscured the meat. I would've preferred less dressing to be used. I still had an appetite after consuming these items so I ordered the Snow Crab Handrolls to finish my meal. Again, it took quite a long time for the food to be prepared. The two rolls were wrapped in sesame leaf with avocado, cucumber sunomono, kimchi mayo, and smoked trout roe as the accompaniments. The last component was quite noticeable as the salty trout eggs added a smoky flavor to enhance the crab meat. Pricewise, the cost was a bit expensive for the portion size, but I have experienced worse at similar upscale Asian restaurants. The bartenders who served me were very pleasant and apologetic for the waiting time. For their service along with the quality of the food, I rounded the rating of my dinner at Cherryfish to a four star level.

Yelp
The ambience was lovely and our waiter was very attentive and friendly. Well, the food was okay - it didn't wow us and we did not feel it was worth the steep prices for the small portions. The tartare lacked flavor and we could tell wasn't the best quality. The lobster was flavorful, but the sauces that it came with never came out and we had to tell our waiter. The butterfly roll had great flavor as well, but for almost $20 it only had cucumber inside and a thin piece of eel. Overall, Cherryfish was great in terms of ambience and service, but for the price of the food and what we got we wouldn't come back.

Yelp
The first thing I want to say about this restaurant is that it's beautifully appointed and pretty inside. Great ambiance. I had to pay $20 to make a reservation in advance, but went ahead with that because it was opening night and we were celebrating my husband's birthday. It said that fee would be applied to the final bill, so I wasn't too worried about it. We arrived for our 6pm reservation, and the restaurant was still pretty empty. When I called they let me know they had happy hour from 5 - 7 pm, but once we arrived was told happy hour was only at the bar. Since we had our teen kids with us, sitting at the bar wasn't an option. I think they sensed our disappointment and they offered to honor the happy pricing for us. Very nice, we were grateful for that. Something to be aware of though, if you are expecting happy hour in the dining area. It took forever for the food to start coming out, not sure why since the place was still pretty empty. But once it did, we quickly realized that the portion sizes were super small and was not going to satisfy a table of 4 people. For how expensive everything was, I was expecting larger shareable portions from the shares menu. I think this place is more for couples/date night and not families. Since they are brand new, we had no reference pictures anywhere to understand how much we would get with each item ordered. We had the edamame (great! But they forgot to put it in and it came out last), butterfly sushi roll, which was underwhelming, lobster rolls which they said would be 4 pieces but came out as 2, shishito peppers (fantastic but watch out for the red ones, super hot) swordfish skewers (good but dry/overcooked), wagyu fried rice (tasty but had negligible wagyu) and the sake grenades flight (favorite was the strawberry one). Also had beer (hubby) and rose wine. They brought us two free desserts to make up for the hiccups, the cheesecake (more like a sponge cake honestly), and a lychee crème brûlée which was delicious and we really enjoyed. However, after reviewing the receipt, it looks like they didn't end up honoring the happy hour pricing, and they didn't apply the $20 reservation fee. It cost $14 for 2 diet cokes, which... really? Walked out of there with a large bill and everyone still super hungry. We would have ordered more food, but did not think the portions were worth it. I'd say this is a cute spot for date night appetizers and cocktails, but not for family dining where you hope to have enough to eat, unless you are used to $350+ night outs for dinner. I really wanted to love this place, but I regret not picking somewhere else for hubby's birthday celebration. Seems you're paying super premium prices for cute decor.

Yelp
This new spot is a winner! The vibe is fantastic, and the food is absolutely incredible, an amazing new dining experience! Every dish was perfectly prepared and bursting with flavor, we shared the flatbread, edamame, shishito peppers, swordfish, and citrus salad. For drinks my husband had the embolden yuzu blonde beer and I had a glass of cabernet. We had the lychee crème brûlée for our dessert. Every dish was delicious!! The hostess greeted us with a warm smile and the staff was attentive without being intrusive. Cherryfish is absolutely beautiful!! an exceptional experience, perfect for date night. Highly recommended.. I'll definitely be back soon!

Yelp
Quality food. Quality Drinks. Very good service. As expected for an upscale startup Japanese fusion restaurant, pricing won't be your friend but overall quality and experience is definitely worth it. Came in a group but I got to taste the Miso Soup, Kimchi Flatbread, Wagyu Fried Rice, Toro Roll, and the Lychee Creme Brulee. Miso Soup is NOT your Thermos Miso soup! It is a crazy deeply flavored miso soup! A must have starter! Smoky, Earthy, and deeply flavored miso soup. This one surprised me! 11/10 Kimchi Flatbread was plain genius. It's hard to hate on it! Who doesn't love the shoyu beef cheek and kimchi combo that you can eat like a pizza/taco!? 10/10 Whoever was making Wagyu Fried Rice, knows his fried rice - He makes it like an ode to gomoku Gohan, but fried. Rice is well separated with a little sticky feel, taste is sweet, salty and smoky. Meat to rice ratio is perfect. (It's fried rice, not fried meat with rice. Come on yelpers). The EGG?!? Yolk is perfect taste is very very flavorful. This rice is overall amazinv, my only takeaway is it's quite pricey. 9.5/10 Toro roll here is actually affordable compared to most places I see. Toro sashimi alone could run 20-30usd and only 2 slices. This one has 3/4 slices plus rice and fillings for 28! This is a steal! Toro experience without breaking the budget! Awesome quality fish and great tasting rice! Lastly, Lychee Creme Brulee was made out of love. Just perfection. Crazy Flavor. What a dessert to end the night. For the drink, I had the Passionfruit which is a great pallet cleanser and enhancer to the already flavorful meal. They have a good selection of sake and beers too! Would def recommend.

Yelp
Some of the finest beverages and food I have enjoyed! Cherryfish enhances every occasion. The menu is thoughtfully designed and the restaurant offers a truly unique atmosphere. Our server and the bartenders were attentive, and the owner even took the initiative to inquire about our experience to ensure that everything was satisfactory. This location is undoubtedly a new experience worth exploring.

Yelp
Some friends and myself decided to try cherryfish out to see what all the rave was about. Well let me tell you this the food was AMAZING!! I had the wagyu fried rice and chicken katsu. Both were fantastic. For starters we ordered edamame which was the best I've ever had!! Kimchi flatbread... I was very hesitant on this but I gave it a shot and glad I did it was delicious. Friends got the short rib tomahawk and a lobster both were ver good as well. The ambiance was fantastic as well beautiful inside and super clean bathrooms!! Chef and waitresses did a fantastic job and I can't wait to come back!!

Absolutely fire! Tried almost all the entrees as a party. All were great. Highly recommend. PB isn't known for its food, but hopefully this place starts a movement.

Yelp
This new restaurant in Pacific Beach has amazing food which came out well timed for our dinner and the dishes were so full of flavor. There are great cocktails that are unique to the restaurant. I highly recommend Cherryfish to anyone that wants a different experience in PB. The staff was very accommodating as well. Dishes I loved were swordfish, kimchee flatbread and beef tenderloin.
