How I heard of this place: Visiting Portland for the umpteenth time, we happened across a Visitor's Center that suggested Cheryl's for breakfast, as it has "something for everyone". We decided to give it a go!
Type of cuisine: A mixed genre menu. A "New American restaurant & cafe situated in the heart of downtown Portland". Everything from Portugese fried rice to waffles, eggs benny and scrambles, the space does have something for everyone. A special weekend brunch menu is also available.
Ambiance: "Its beautiful floor-to-ceiling windows, quaint charm, and delicious cuisine make it a hot spot for foodies all around. Get here early to guarantee your seat and complimentary light, fluffy beignets." The corner spot is spacious and fun, whimsical Easter decorations took over the entire restaurant! Seating seems plentiful, but the place is bustling from 8:30 in the morning onward. Streams of diners, some in business attire, others with family and friends stopped in for a drink and treat or a meal. Staff is always working, running back and forth with orders, food, etc.
What I ordered: Prior to ordering, we were offered one beignets each, warm and freshly fried. After selecting our beverages, a mocha ($4.75) for me and a caramel oat milk latte ($4.50+) for my husband, as well as two small apple juices ($4 each). I selected Ed's Scramble ($16.75) - eggs, extra large roasted vegetables, caramelized onion, spinach, cheddar and jack cheeses, sour cream and ranchero sauce; the Portugese Fried Rice ($16.95) for my husband - Linguica sausage over bacon-and-egg fried rice with green onion and avocado; a Fried Egg Sandwich ($17.25) for our third diner - Bacon, ham or sausage with fried egg and cheddar, served with cheesy hash browns or roasted red potatoes. Consuming raw or under-cooked meats, poultry, seafood, shellfish or eggs may Increase your risk of food-borne illness, and two sides of crispy bacon ($4.50 each).
What I loved: The fried rice was amazing! It was perfectly seasoned and hearty. My scramble was dry, the eggs overcooked, while the huge chunks of broccoli were under-cooked and difficult to eat in one bite. The ranchero sauce was too watery and left something to be desired. The Fried Egg Sandwich looked so good, I think I'll have to try it on a future visit. The espresso beverages, too, left much to be desired; perhaps eat here, but get your coffee elsewhere.
Why I loved it: The service was efficient, friendly and the space sweet and cozy.
