13 Stellar Curries in Portland | Eater Portland

"Once a pop up within Culmination Brewing, 2018 Eater PDX Chef of the Year Deepak Kaul’s casual Indian restaurant opened last year bringing tasty Kashmiri pakora and curries to the Alphabet District. Among many standout dishes, the Southern Indian Chettinad chicken comforts with notes of yogurt, turmeric, and chilies. Topped with poppy seeds and tomatoes, Mary’s free range chicken thigh meat is mixed in a mildly spiced blend of garlic, ginger, and coconut-based curry. Fried shallots and saffron rice tie the whole dish together, and a side of lotus root fries won’t hurt either."

I visited this place for my team lunch. This place served a full-course buffet with a changing menu; it also has a la carte. The food seems authentic and flavourful with toned-down spices (you might find it bland for some dishes). I am providing a review based on what I have tasted. Recommendations: Good for team lunches, the buffet system saves time to order. Food: Must Try: Tandoori Chicken, Butter Chicken, Sambhar uttapam, Naan, Fish Curry, Fried Rice, Veg Pulao, Bhindi Masala Avoid: Spring Rolls or frozen items Average: Gulab Jamun, Dessert options Ambience: The restaurant theme is Indian Contemporary with instrumental music in the background, good enough for Conversations. I recommend working on their presentation, organization and perceived cleanliness. Good to have: Allergy Details, Kids menu, kids activity Additional Mentions: Liquor options are available, there is a heated cooktop on each table, and the staff is friendly and smiling. Accessible entrance (Please check if they have accessible washrooms). Ample parking, but it may get crowded on weekends. There's an in-house shop to buy sweets, and do ask for corporate 15% discounts 😊. Free mouth freshener candies at entry and exit. Detailed Review: The butter chicken and paneer gravy are on the sweeter side (I liked the butter chicken; the paneer was fine), and the overall spice texture brings out the taste of South Indian food beautifully. The uttapam (salted pancake) was well cooked and tasted nice with sambhar. The naan was fresh and hot. The fish curry cooked nicely with no excess smell. I liked the fried rice (it depends on the palate. Some folks like it more cooked) and veg pulao. Dal fry was nice. The spring rolls were frozen and could have been better. There could be more textual details and information on the dishes. A better variety of desserts would be nice, the gulab jamun I had was average. I have listed down the buffet content for reference. Overall, there are plenty of options for vegan and non-vegan persons. Buffet Content --------------- Soups: 1 Veg and 1 Non-Veg Soup, Fruits and Salads: Salads, Orange Spices, Pineapple fruit, Snacks: Bhindi masala (Ladyfinger Fritters) and CabbageFries, Fried Shrimp, Tandoori Chicken Mains: Uttapam, Sambhar, Fried Rice, Veg Pulao, Butter Chicken, Parota, Fish Curry, Paneer Butter Masala, Coconut Rice Desserts: Rice pudding and Gulab Jamun.

Good new restaurant. Inside is very open and bright. We had a weekday lunch buffet, and the food was very tasty. Both vegetarian and non-veg options are available. Weekday luch buffet menu is smaller, and weekend buffet has more varieties. Food was not too spicy. Rice pudding and tandoori chicken were yummy. The host is kind and pleasing. They give discounts if you have a local company ID card.

Visited here during a road trip through Portland. Ordered Podi Idli, Appam with Veg Kurma, Appam with coconut milk & Rasam Idli. Rasam was good n tasty. Everything else was below average. Appam was definitely not what you expect especially when the description reads as Kerala cuisine. I guess the non vegetarian food would be good here. Service however was good & quick. I will skip it if I am in this town again.

Updated review- Sadly I'm dropping the review from 5 to three. Idk if they were having a bad day or what but the fish curry this time was bad. I asked for medium spice instead of spicy so that I could get the flavors more forward over the heat. Last time it was SO GOOD I wanted to appreciate the flavors before the heat kicked in. The flavor was more tomato forward and the sauce was more watery than a thick, smooth curry. This time bits of tomato and jalapeños were clearly evident. Like they didn't let the curry simmer long enough or let the tomatoes become jammy before adding water they also didn't let simmer down into a sauce. And the depth of flavor I had last time just wasn't there. I even asked the server if they gave me the right curry, and was assured it was the correct items though maybe the cook was different?? I wouldn't think the different spice level would effect the taste that dramatically, because if I'd had THIS curry last time, I def wouldn't have been back! 😮‍💨 And I was very much looking forward to it! They were very good about it and offered to make something different or remake the same dish but I declined these things as I'd hate to be disappointed again if their other curries turned out the same. They also took the curry off the check. So don't not go based purely off this review... just maybe dont expect consistent results? 🥲 I am updating the post with the pictures of the second curry by comparison. Previous review about 1 mo before : JUST GO! The food here so so richly flavorful and spiced as desired. I ordered veg pakora, fish curry, plain Naan, to eat in. The server was kind enough to give me a sample of their veg soup, which is something I'd never try myself but I actually loved it! It was corn based but not overly corn-y with a velvet texture (but not too smooth like creamed corn is). Now it's something I'd like to try to make at home! The pakora was crispy and yummy, and the serving was just huge! Plenty for three to share so for just me it was more than enough. The fish curry i asked for extra spicy because the Portland pallete is... lacking. And they delivered! It was delightfully spicy but still so so flavorful. The fish was tender and light and the curry sauce was literally liquid gold! I could eat it alone with Naan all day. The serving was generous of fish and sauce. I had enough for leftovers, big enough to share (but you wouldn't want to!) The basmati rice was mostly perfect, there were a few hard kernels I bit into but other wise paired with the fluffy Naan and fish curry beautifully! The Naan was enough for one, fluffy, warm and not burnt. I ordered some of their veg soup to go- as well one of their desserts and extra Naan. The food came out promptly, and you do pay at the front so you don't feel rushed to finish. Bonus points for plenty of napkins at the table. Will update about the dessert I ordered! But yes I highly highly recommend this place. I waited a while to visit and it did not disappoint! 🙌🏿

Google
What a delightful Lil hidden treasure. Amazing food! Relaxing atmosphere. The Lunch Buffet was perfect and worth the moderate price. Left very happy. The care taken in every aspect of their food and service made it a great experience. We will be returning. From what we were told, their weekend buffet is double the size of the lunch buffet. We are excited to come back!

Went here before our flight home. A family member got severe food poisoning after the flight landed. We ate at the lunch buffet. Spent hours in the ER. Do not go here and save yourself from a hospital bill and several hours of your life.

Very dissatisfied and disappointed.

If you’re looking for a delightful and authentic South Indian culinary experience, Chettinad Indian Cuisine buffet is a must-visit! The buffet offers a wide variety of flavorful dishes that truly capture the essence of traditional Indian flavors. Not compromising on taste , quality The buffet setup is clean, organized, and inviting. The food is displayed beautifully, making it easy to navigate and choose your favorites. The counters are well-maintained, and the staff is attentive in replenishing the dishes. My overall experience was totally excellent!

Yelp
Great location, nicely upgraded, good ambiance, awesome dishes and authentic South Indian flavors, the tables have warmers too

Yelp
My husband and I have ordered from this restaurant many times and the food has always been delicious. We ordered butter chicken and Naan. When the food arrived, we noticed that the quantity was a LOT less than what it had been in the past. But considering that that is what is happening with most things, we didn't really care. However, when we tasted the butter chicken, it was SUPER salty and tasted odd, noting like the butter chicken used to taste. The Naan was very, very thin, and not fully cooked. All in all a very disappointing experience. We won't be ordering from this restaurant again.

Yelp
When I'm in town I'm actually looking forward to some good food. I was hoping to get some good Indian food. Unfortunately this was a major miss. I'm so disappointed in the quality of food and taste. It was not fresh and we waited almost 40 minutes. It's like the food was from earlier in the day. And we didn't order from the buffet. I don't think this is the way to cook food and serve guests. We spent $75.00 and that money could've been better spent. I'm going to stay optimistic and hope I find something better next time.

Yelp
It sucks to see these guys go downhill over time. We were there recently and got a slew of dishes - tandoori chicken, fish fry, masala dosa and Kadai paneer. The dosa was fine (though I remember it being close to exceptional last time I visited). The worst dish was the Kadai paneer which appeared to be a few pieces of rubbery paneer in a nondescript curry with old vegetables. I really hope these guys improve their game and probably won't be back, till I hear good things again.

Maureen K.

Yelp
The service was great. There were seven of us, so I thought it would take a long time to get our food but it came out quickly. The food was excellent, nice ambiance. Everyone was happy.

Yelp
I was craving Indian food and Chettinad Indian Cuisine popped on on my Yelp searches! I love a good Indian buffet so that I can have a little bit of everything. The food was amazing! Wholesome was a bit on the spicy side, everything had amazing flavor. The buffet is only served on the weekends and included fresh fruit, hot chai tea, passion fruit punch, dessert and more! There was plenty of seating, the food was fresh, and service good! The cost for the buffet was around $17 per person. We will be back!

Yelp
Went to Chettinad for the lunch buffet. First off, I want to say that this restaurant is very well managed and clean. As far as the buffet, I felt like they could have had more vegetarian options. I did enjoy the butter chicken, goat curry, and chana masala that I had but it wasn't the best i've ever had. Overall I feel like this is a good neighborhood spot to enjoy Indian food but I wouldn't travel too far to eat here.
google avatar

Brian L.

Yelp
Food was magnificent. So much flavor, variety and color. Staff was sparse but probably not really needed with the buffet. If you're close to Nike, don't be scared to come into this space with its awkward location, the quality of the food outweighs everything else

Yelp
My first dining experience at Chettinad's was spectacular! I went for dinner and everything was fresh, tasty and authentic. In fact, everything was so delicious that I decided to go back and try the lunch buffet. Unfortunately, I was not impressed with the food from the buffet and the lack of options was disappointing. At 2pm many items were low and tasted like they had been sitting out too long. The rice was undercooked. I would recommend eating off the menu here, but not the buffet,
google avatar

Lindsay T.

Yelp
We decided to try the weekday buffet and it was very disappointing. The items were not only limited, but the items they did have were not very good. My son took a bite of the tandoori chicken and spit it out saying it tasted like cigarettes. I can't argue with that since it tasted very smokey and dry, inedible. There was a shrimp curry and goat curry, the shrimp were overcooked and tough and the goat was grainy and not fresh. There were some random items like shrimp tempura and spring rolls that were very low quality. We tried to give the dishes a try but left pretty quickly after not eating much. The service was polite and attentive which is why I added a star. Overall disappointing and would not return.

Yelp
Cold sambar. Bland dosa. Zero effort. Told the staff -- they shrugged it off with "we'll let the chef know" and walked away. No apology, no fix, just indifference. Don't waste your time or taste buds here.

Erin S.

Yelp
Great Indian food! I tried a chicken dish and a paneer dish, both were wonderful! I will come back

Yelp
Had a great experience! We loved the vibe from the moment we stepped inside. It's warm and inviting. No wait at all and the food came out quickly. It was all delicious! We had the onion pakora and an incredible complimentary soup as an appetizer, Chettinad goat curry and Chettinad egg curry, garlic and bullet garlic naan, and a mango lassi. Everything was phenomenal, fresh and tasty and deliciously spiced. The service was great, our server and the other staff were kind and took great care of us! We will definitely be returning, I really encourage you to check this place out.

Yelp
I highly recommend checking out this restaurant!! I am a wedding and event planner. I had the opportunity to meet with the new family behind this restaurant. They took over this space about 3 months ago & had transformed the space to a much pleasant environment. Upon entrance, I was immediately created with warm smile and welcome. My first impression of the restaurant -- clean, spacious dining environment with great lighting, welcoming staff. I came for their Saturday lunch buffet. They have a great variety of vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. The food was very delicious. Some of the vegetarian dishes were a little on the spicier side for me and perfect hotness for the non-veg curries. I wouldn't necessarily ask them to reduce the heat because spice is the key ingredient to the authenticity of Indian foods. If you do not like spicy food, i recommend to check out their dinner menu because almost all ala carte items can be customized based on the level of spiciness you prefer. I was so happy to see they have a great variety of Indian desserts. I love the ones i got because they were delicious and not overly sweet. They told me the desserts were home made from scratch!! Plenty of parking. Support local. Support small businesses. This is perfect for family and group dining experience. I highly recommend!! I will come back for their dinner

Yelp
Probably the best Indian restaurant that I have been to in many years. We ordered 4 dishes and all of them were fantastic, like to the point I'd be mumbling to myself "wow, this is so good!". We ordered the lamb curry, tandoori chicken, chicken Dosa, bullet naan (spicy), garlic naan, and butter chicken. All of them were great. The servers were attentive, answered our questions with patience. I'm very happy we found this place that is close by and affordable. Lots of seating, the parking lot was large. Apparently they have an all you can eat buffet, so I will have to check that out later.
google avatar

Ambalika N.

Yelp
2 whole drumets and 3 whole wings.. more bone than meet . Not cut into curry pieces. Biryani corners much better. More meets better flavor and actual bite size pieces.
google avatar

Arnab K.

Yelp
The place reopened again and it had to. It serves delicious and spicy food. Of course, there are many different types of dishes in the Indian cuisine and the place sample of them. It does a decent job in it. The ambiance is also on the cleaner side. Check out their and then try their buffet sometime.

Yelp
It's been so long since I've really enjoyed an Indian restaurant, and I was so grateful our friends recommended Chettinad. This restaurant is really unassuming from the outside, and we would have missed it if our friends hadn't recommended it. Their lassi is the best I've had in years (since being spoiled with lassi in Malaysia). We could eat their Dosa all day, and we ordered extra at the end of our meal. Their curries were delicious with fluffy rice. Service was excellent and welcoming. We will be back to explore more of their menu!
google avatar

Rohit P.

Yelp
This used to be one of the better restaurant for Indian cuisine, but after their reopening under new management/ownership (idk) the quality has dropped significantly! Here are some foods I've tried: Chicken dum biryani: we got a lot of rice and very less chicken which was dry and tasteless, Chettinad chicken biryani: wayyy to spicy even when asked for mild. They only use 1 type of black masala which seems to have lot of pepper - very unpleasant to consume, Samosa: seem to be store bought (frozen section from Indian grocery store) and they were not cooked thoroughly. no mint or tamarind chutney and 2 store bought pieces cost 5.99! The two stars I give is for the helpfulness & politeness of staff and relatively okay buffet food. Never get a-la-cart from here if you're looking for good Indian food - very disappointed :(
google avatar

Roxanne T.

Yelp
Came here for the first time with a friend. Super friendly, and fast service. The menu was large and the food was excellent. I ordered Lamb Vindaloo(mild). Was cooked perfectly with a slight spice but not too overpowering. Left very full and happy. I will definitely be bringing other friends.

Lani Y.

Yelp
I've had a LOT of Indian food, and their mild is NOT mild. We ordered take out around 8:30PM when they close at 10. When we got there the doors were locked and they were confused saying they did not have our order. When we got our food, the portions only took up half of the container. Idk, for the price, there's a lot more places in the area with better service, quality, quantity, and honest spice level lol
google avatar

Darren O.

Yelp
Came here on a friend's recommendation. It was not the nicest building, but that was not why we were coming. When we entered, we realized that the majority of the patrons were from India or a nearby country. I take this as a good sign when eating at any food from a specific country or region. We ordered too much chicken but didn't regret it at all. The tandoori chicken was the best I have ever had, period! Tender, juicy, and just enough heat. The butter chicken was amazing. It's literally perfect. If you like in general you will love this. The coconut curry chicken was good. Just the right amount of heat. Balanced flavor. Mmmmm! Got two Naans. Both were great dipping bread. After we had eaten, we asked what we saw on another table and ended up ordering a Dosa. Omg! So good. The food here is the best Indian food that I have eaten in the Portland area. Literally amazing. If you like Indian food- you will need to head over here. Fyi- it seems like a family run restaurant with mom cooking. They got a little overwhelmed when they got really busy and we had to wait a little bit at the end. It didn't bother me enough to drop a star, but understand this is nor a chain restaurant. So worth it though!

Tomo C.

Yelp
My spouse and I liked this local restaurant before, so we came back for a lunch buffet. Buffet seems to have gotten smaller this time. Also, we were quite disturbed by the fact that the restaurant had a sign for the customers to RE-USE the plates for refilling buffet. Doesn't it violate the Oregon Health Code? (I did not take a photo of the sign at the restaurant, but fellow customers and we were shocked by this)

Tuan P.

Yelp
authentic indian food with rich menu and great services. got to try their lunch buffet next time.
google avatar

Trent R.

Yelp
Great food. I however have never waited less than 10 minutes extra than the stated time to pick up for takeout. Usually it's 20 minutes or more. It's infuriating. So if you order pick up, just expect that and it'll be a lot more enjoyable.
google avatar

Stacey B.

Yelp
Delicious food with lots of variety. Some of my favorite Indian food. I love this place.
google avatar

Raeann P.

Yelp
In the words of the kids these days, this place SLAPS. We had a team lunch here today, and it was FANTASTIC. We had samosas, fried rice, fried noodles, butter chicken, tikka masala, and mango lassi. Oh and don't forget the garlic naan!! Quick note if you're going with a crowd - call ahead to speed up the meal time so they have a chance to start cooking before you get there! Seriously love this place.
google avatar

Kaity H.

Yelp
Sweet staff, High Quality delicious food. I'm an Indian food connoisseur, over 30 restaurants. I'm here for the lunch buffet, but love that I see a hot plate on each table to keep dishes warm! I'll have to come back for dinner in the future, i appreciate helping food warm.
google avatar

Lori I.

Yelp
When you find an Indian restaurant tucked away behind a convenience store that is filled with only Indian people, you know you've struck gold. I had to pick up stuff from the Amazon locker on the other side of this building and saw the sign for this place and smelled the food. I ordered over the phone and waited for my order while all these Indian people probably wondered WTH I was doing there. Yeah buddy, your secret is out. I'm telling everybody about this place. BEST INDIAN FOOD I've had in a long time. I've had Indian food all over California, east coast, London, Australia, and had friends' grandma's home cooked Indian food, this was the closest to those home cooked ones. Go now.
google avatar

Pratyush R.

Yelp
Went after the grand opening of Chettinad Indian cuisine and everything is so amazing. Updated seating area, new flooring and interiors. Ambience feels much better than before and so does the food. Ordered Butter chicken which was delicious and creamy. Garlic Naan was cooked till perfection. Idly and coconut chutney was so fresh! Highly recommended for Indian food in the Portland area!
google avatar

Papi D.

Yelp
Foodie over 40 years across four continents. Excellent food quality, selection and authenticity. Friendly and a consistently great meal. Highly recommend Vegetable Pakora, Shrimp Vindaloo and Butter Chicken for those desiring less heat but all the flavors of India.
google avatar

Ploy N.

Yelp
10/10 Everybody should check them out. The lunch rush on a Saturday was intense but totally worth it! This is easily my top Indian spot in town. I'm a sucker for dosas and theirs were crispy, light, and everything you'd want in a dosa plus a few more. The got a wide variety of less common Southern Indian items you can explore. Besides, the dosa, our paneer curry was also suuuper tasty. Great balance of spices. The Aloo Pratha was super fresh and comforting. Portion was also great! No way you won't be satisfied here. I'm ready to be back!

Pdx P.

Yelp
Food - very, very mediocre Service - mediocre service Ambience - good The buffet that we got during a weekday was way too overpriced for the offerings. The Naan was rubbery and was not fresh - looks to be repurposed from earlier. Nothing on the menu was special. Worst part was the dessert which was some vermicelli sweet dish that was dry and totally unappetizing. Again, this seems like leftovers from an earlier menu. There were no other desserts. Only passable dish was the sambar. There were no drinks that were part of the buffet other than water. You have to pay for coffee, tea, or anything else. We will not visit this place again. Seems like a total rip off for the quality.
google avatar

David O.

Yelp
This is an excellent restaurant with many delicious choices on the menu. We ordered the palak paneer and butter chicken and were impressed with the seasoning and presentation. We've ordered both of these dishes many times and really enjoyed our meals. We had dinner with a group of 6 family members, and were impressed with how accommodating the server and staff were during our meal. Thanks for a great experience!
google avatar

Sean P.

Yelp
From your first bite of butter naan to the last drop of the chicken tikka masala curry, you will be transported on a flavorful journey to south India where Chettinad's rich menu was inspired. The staff are courteous and attentive. Within seconds of entering the restaurant, my wife and I were seated with menus and given water. We asked our server for advice between the types of naan and he made sure we ordered a dish with sauce to compliment his recommendation of butter naan. The food service is expedient. After placing our order, we waited maybe 10 minutes before the first part of our order arrived. The dishes are well prepared and richly flavorful. You know those meals where you try to identify all of the flavors in a dish but you just can't name them all because there's so much depth? That was our experience at Chettinad. While the establishment is clean, the atmosphere isn't anything special. You can enjoy Bollywood movies while you eat, however, which is a fun feature. At the end of the evening, the bill was reasonable. For three dishes that more than satisfied plus tip we paid just over $35 for a Friday night dinner for two. That's pretty darn reasonable in 2022 for killer grub. Overall, a wonderful experience!

Yelp
India food served was delicious. They have good buffet and they serve good South Indian food! Staff is great and the service and ambiance is pretty good!
google avatar

Yelp
Some tasty Indian food with excellent service. We found the Saag Paneer to be some of the best we've ever tried. The restaurant feels a little dated, but it is clean and pleasant enough for an excellent tasting meal.

Yelp
Best indian food we have had in the entire Portland area! Restaurant is clean and newly renovated and service is great!

Yelp
I have been torn on what star rating to give this restaurant. It was filled with Indians, which means it must be good. However, unlike most times when dining at an Indian Restaurant my taste buds walk away dancing from all the amazing flavors they just got to experience. However, there wasn't even a slow dance happening in my mouth this time. I am going to chalk it up to we just ordered the wrong thing. We ordered the family dosa, which would have been better suited for The Brady Bunch, including Alice, instead of our family of 4. No one loved the Dosa, but was impressed with how nice the staff was in the delivery of it. My only other DOSA experience was at a bougy restaurant in SF, so perhaps, I don't really kow what a good Dosa should taste like. The portions of all the dishes were odd as we ordered Aloo Gobi, which only had a few bites, then another person ordered the fried rice, and it was served in a monster size bowl, that he could barely make a dent in it. I agree with other Yelpers, the decor is undesirable, which normally wouldn't have bothered me, had the food been better, as some of the best Indian I have had were in total dives.
google avatar

Ann T.

Yelp
The food was pretty good! The restaurant had a good crowd for a random Thursday night. They offer northern and southern Indian food which was nice to try different region's foods. I really enjoyed their fried chicken pieces.. it went so well with the saag I ordered.
google avatar

Scott H.

Yelp
I have heard about this place. However the COVID nixed my plans of trying the buffet. So I waited and waited and waited. I finally ended up in the area and saw the buffet was open. I pounced. I love that everything tastes different. My main complaint about Indian buffet is when everything tastes the same. Also I loved that some of the dishes were actually spicy. Many buffets shy away from that. The Tikka masala was awesome. I'd definitely order that on its own. I even tried the goat. It was delicious. Had almost a corned beef type thing going on. Also for the win they have hot masala chai with the buffet. Yum! Until I'm convinced otherwise this is the place for me.
google avatar

Mark M.

Yelp
The malai kofta, channa saag, samosas were all great, as was the chettinad biriyani, although I think I prefer their hyderabad biriyani. The vegetable uttapam was a little heavy, like the batter hadn't had enough tine to rise/ferment but it still tasted good and I like the sambar that comes with it
google avatar

Nicole B.

Yelp
I've been here a few times, and have had a couple of different dosas: mysore podi masala & the chicken tikka dosa, both were excellent. Can't go wrong with any of the curries, had the coconut kodi chicken curry and lamb curry. I am obsessed with their dosas, and will return for more. I can't wait to try all the dosas. Next up will probably be paneer.
google avatar

Mindy K.

Yelp
Ordered food to takeout. We got tikka masalas, a few different biryani's, a saag, and butter chicken. Everything was too spicy for our taste. Even the butter chicken. It would be tasty at first bite but then the spices kick in. I added coconut milk to the sauces to tame the spices but it didn't work. I even asked for mild in the comments section when I placed the order but they were still too spicy. I'd recommend this place to anyone that loves super spicy food. They gave out generous portions. You'll have leftovers for sure.

Yelp
Had an excellent lunch although I admit I ordered some basic things. However I found the tandoori chicken and the butter chicken to be phenomenal, served with some good naan. Not much of an atmosphere however the service was great. Can't wait to go back and try other items. It's an extensive menu

Yelp
Very nice surprise to find a perfect dosa in Beaverton! My family of four chose the Paneer filled dosa and enjoyed it before sharing Lamb Saag, Chicken Tikka Masala, Garlic Naan and Carrot Halwa for dessert. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Chettinad is a regular, whenever we do not feel like cooking at home, we head to Chettinad! It has one of the most authentic South Indian dishes, do try their Dosa, Uttapa, Medu wada and Appam. Also do not miss out on their mind blowing chicken appetizers, they are spicy on the tongue forever on your mind though. The service is quick which is a plus as well. I was happy to see them bring back their weekend buffet, that way you can try all the dishes you wanted to try, before you can decide on your next to go order :)

Yelp
WOW wow wow Chettinad Indian Cuisine is my favorite kind of restaurant: a hole-in-the-wall place with authentic, affordable, delicious and healthy food. The food here is fabulous and bursting with flavor! I came here twice because dinner here last night was heavenly and I haven't had better South Indian food, not even in the greater Sacramento/Folsom/Roseville area which has an abundance of great South Indian restaurants. For those who have never had South Indian food, one of the staples would be the dosa, a thin crispy crepe made of fermented lentil and rice served typically with both a tomato chutney, sambar (lentil soup) and coconut chutney. The latter serves to cool down the palate, while the tomato and sambar can add more spice. The dosa can be stuffed with curry or plain, but dipping it into the various chutneys or sambar changes the flavor of each bite so you get to enjoy different tastes. I love the dosa just plain, it's got a crisp but chewy texture, similar to eating shredded cheese which has been grilled into a cheese crisp - savory, chewy, but also a little tangy from the fermentation. Let's get on to the food: With two other friends we had the Chettinad Lamb Kheema Dosa ($12) and the Chettinad Chicken Dosa ($11), both medium heat. These were outstanding, and along with the house special Chettinad veggie curry were instant winners. We also got the chana saag (creamed spinach with chickpeas), butter chicken, aloo matar (potato and green pea curry), which were good, but eclipsed by the above. We also had the lamb biryani, along with the set Dosa (thick fermented crepes), and garlic bullet naan (thick oven flatbread with cilantro, garlic, and minced jalapeños. We wisely got mango lassi to take down the heat, which cooled our palates as we ordered medium spicy which was amazing. Everything was delicious but the standout dishes were the lamb or chicken kheema dosa (pick the lamb if you love lamb, the spices are constructed to enhance the gaminess so that it tastes wonderful). I've never had a shredded lamb dish with such tender, succulent shreds... The set dosas were perfect - crisp, chewy, savory, fluffy and you get three of them. The garlic bullet naan were perfect too - chewy, pillowy with the perfect sprinkle of fresh baby cilantro and minced garlic and jalapeños. You have to be able to tolerate jalapeños or else just go for the regular garlic naan without the jalapeños. Pro tips: - order as spicy as you can tolerate because they take down the flavor when they reduce the spice. For example, medium spicy for the Chettinad veggie curry was outstanding last night but when I ordered it today in regular spicy it lost many flavors that made it a standout last night - order any of the items in RED color as these are the house specials - for either of the amazing kheema dosas (chicken or lamb) be sure to pick out the bright red chilis if you don't want a mouthful of fire! The fresh green curry leaves are delicious and add a lot of flavor so do eat those - order a mango lassi as the yogurt helps to take down the heat - coconut chutney - served cold, useful for taking down the heat due to the fatty acids - tomato chutney - served cold, useful for adding spice and flavor intensity to any dosa - sambar - spiced lentil soup served hot, adds to the dosa as a dipping sauce but also delicious on its own Enjoy! This place is the best South Indian restaurant I have been to, if you can tolerate medium spice or above it's out of this world delicio
