The Best Hotels in Edinburgh (2025) | Condé Nast Traveler

"Reopened with a no‑expense‑spared reinvention, I stayed in family‑friendly apartments beneath soaring ceilings and checkered marble floors—the range includes a huge penthouse that sleeps six—and enjoyed hotel‑style extras like roll‑top baths, framed period RBS cheques as quirky decor, a Hawksmoor steak restaurant in the vaults, and a west‑wing champagne bar that serves lobster rolls from a prime spot on St Andrew Square." - Rosie Conroy

The Edinburgh Grand

"Take us there. What do you see as you approach the hotel? This hotel-turned-bank-turned-hotel is full of exceptional details that have thankfully survived the renovation. The bank was inspired by Modernist American architecture, and the lobby is especially striking, with buttoned-up black-and-white marble floors, a playful raspberry-pink circular settee, and a stunning circular stairwell that's ripe for an impressive Instagram once you reach the top. It sets the tone for the rest of the hotel, which is equally sophisticated but without pretension. Tell us more. What's the story behind this place? It hasn't been that long since St. Andrews square was all business, little play. But thanks to a recent revitalization of restaurants, bars, and stores like Harvey Nichols, the area is becoming an Edinburgh hotspot. Arriving during latter stages of this transformation was the hotly anticipated Edinburgh Grand, which opened in June 2018 in the former Royal Bank of Scotland headquarters. The hotel part of the larger Lateral City Apartments group, which has two other properties in the city. Okay, now the real reason we're here: the rooms. What can we expect from our lodgings?Standard Capital Apartments range from studios to two-bedroom units, so everyone from solo travelers to groups of friends can find the right fit. Some studios are basic, with plain white walls and little art; others offer a bit more visually. The Malin + Goetz toiletries are nice throughout, but this is a property where upgrades really do make a difference. The deluxe rooms are gorgeous and—moving on up—the Director's Suite has a lovely mid-century living space, complete with a pea-green velvet sofa bedecked with tassels. But the three-bedroom Penthouse is the real charmer here, with a furnished rooftop terrace offering one of the best panoramic views in the city. If you can afford it, do it—it's already rumored to have hosted celebrities. Say, hypothetically, we're a bit hungry after a long day of travel and/or touristing. Are there any good options on the hotel grounds? There's an excellent outpost of the upmarket Hawksmoor steakhouse—the first in Edinburgh. Even if you're not staying here, it's worth a stop for dinner; the former marble bank hall that now houses the restaurant is a stunner, and yes, the beef is divine. But the true treat here is the Register Club, a reservation-only Champagne and cocktail joint run by the genius team behind The Bon Vivant. If you have something to celebrate, do it here—and dress to impress (there's a dress code). The Mad Men–style club room has talented mixologists, swish snacks like lobster rolls and terrine, and, as a fun added touch, a game room. How's the service? The wonderful brigade of concierge staff, all wearing retro tweed jackets, are happy to help with anything you need. You mentioned the restaurant is worth a stop even if you're not staying in the hotel—so how does the hotel fit into the surrounding area? This buzzy hotel is very much part of the scene of the transformed St. Andrews Square—and with two great places to dine and drink, it's a hotspot for well-heeled locals and tourists alike. Anything you'd change about the hotel, if you could?Somewhat confusingly, the six Nespresso pods that come with your room aren't restocked, though tea bags are. And visually striking though they may be, sliding doors on a bathroom are never, well, romantic. Also, there are no phones at the reception desk; anytime you have a question, you have to ask in person. Are there any other details we should know about before booking our stay?Nope—this place is pretty basic as far as amenities go. Got it. Well, we're optimists—we figure you wouldn't take the time to go through all this if you aren't recommending the hotel. But is it really worth it? And why?Absolutely. This hotel is in an exciting, newly vibrant area, and it's one of the most stylish, buzziest places to stay in town. It's also within walking distance or a short cab ride away from wherever you might need to go—the square is also a hub for Edinburgh's reliable, inexpensive bus lines." - Krystin Arneson

Edinburgh Grand | Best places to stay in Edinburgh |

"One of the most exclusive addresses in the Scottish capital, this neoclassical building was once the Royal Bank of Scotland headquarters. Situated on St. Andrews Square in the heart of the New Town, it has been converted into 50 high-end serviced apartments sleeping between one and six – with breakfast served in the fourth-floor Register Club. The cutting-edge design incorporates many of the building’s original features, such as the wood panelling in the Director’s Suite bathroom which was upcycled from Westminster Bridge after it was bombed in the Second World War. Add original Art Deco styling and a bedazzling six-storey atrium topped by a glass dome, and there’s a real sense of glamour. The old bank vaults house the hotel gym, a branch of Hawksmoor restaurant and Lady Libertine, one of the hippest bars in town, in the basement. This is one for design-conscious night owls who like everything on their doorstep. " - Lucy Gillmore

From the moment we checked in, The Edinburgh Grand showed us exactly why it stands apart. The service was exceptional at every turn, and the team made us feel as though we were longtime regulars rather than first-time guests. Jo at the front desk deserves a special mention. She is easily one of the finest hotel professionals we have ever encountered, and as Titanium Bonvoy members, we have met quite a few. Her kindness and interest in all of her guests set the tone for our entire stay. The Register Club quickly became our nightly ritual. The staff there was so genuinely lovely that we found ourselves returning each evening without hesitation. Lady Libertine, just off the lobby, was the perfect place to unwind with a drink when we arrived. Both spaces capture that classic Edinburgh charm while delivering modern comfort. Our room suited our family perfectly, offering both style and function in a way that made it feel like a true home base. Even the gym felt brand new, as if it had been completed the week before—spotless, well-equipped, and surprisingly inviting for vacation workouts. The Edinburgh Grand earns every bit of its five stars, and frankly, the rating system feels a touch inadequate. We cannot wait to return.

Myself and my husband had the pleasure of staying here last week. It is a small hotel, 50 rooms, feels bigger as a quirky layout. ||We actually stayed in 3 rooms over the course of our 4 night stay so can give a comprehensive review of rooms!||Breakfast was very good but service was slow. First morning we waited 20 minutes for 2 Orange Juices. There were 3 staff for 3 tables, there's no excuse for that. It might be an idea to leave fresh juices out beside the newspapers so guests can help themselves. Service was better the other mornings, staff are very friendly but need to just move a bit faster! We met a lovely American girl the last night, I think her name was Adi who was very efficient and friendly. ||First room 312|Very small! Wardrobe door touched off bed, zero storage, husband almost fell out of bed, a very small double bed, too small unless you are alone! Noisy due to tram bell going every few mins. Very clean and beautifully decorated but as a result of above issues we asked to be moved. ||Second room 603|Fab! Bigger bed, more storage, a balcony with views of Edinburgh. Quieter as further from tram. Lilita, the front office manager an absolute gem btw, helped us on multiple occasions throughout our stay, we were sorry we didnt get an opportunity to say goodbye. ||Unfortunately due to the storm our flight was cancelled and we had to stay another night. Room 603 was booked so we were moved to 404.||Last room 404|Loved this room! Huge! Like a loft apartment, bedroom upstairs, 2 bathrooms, large living area, quiet as at back of hotel. Will request this room on our next visit or maybe splurge and try the penthouse! :)||Wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel, we loved it. Its quirky, very old and full of history. Location was also excellent. ||Last quick mention to Joseph the door man and Biance on Reception. You were all great, see you on our next visit :)

This hotel is a winner. We enjoyed an excellent stay. We had a lovely room on a high floor, with a nice view of the Cathedral spires. It had an entryway, patio, living room, dining table, large bathroom, comfortable bedroom. Coffee, tea, fridge, and a small Scotch Whiskey sampler to wind down after a long day of sightseeing. The mattress was outstanding. The room was clean and well-appointed. Importantly for us, it was quiet. The hotel is excellently located at the base of the Old Town, just a stone’s throw from Waverley Bridge, requiring a brief but very healthy up-hill (or steps) walk to the Old Town for touring, but allowing one to get out of tourist central to sleep. Wonderful service. Everyone was friendly and attentive, especially the two porters who were both very helpful (especially the tall chap who help us adjust the heating). I highly recommend.

We have used this hotel a few times, always excellent. On this occasion, last weekend, was something special though. Jo on the desk asked us why we had come and I told her I was attending a match with my grandson who lives in Leith. I showed her a picture of him, 20 yrs old and has CP, he can’t walk or talk, is wheelchair bound but loves football. She said her son, Matthew was at the front welcoming guests and she would get him. Matthew said he knew some of the Hibs players and he would try and get something for my grandson. The next day he only turns up with a fully signed Hibs shirt. I was absolutely blown away. He said he didn’t do much but I couldn’t thank him enough, I couldn’t believe a 17 yr old would go out of his way, what a credit to his mum and The Grand Hotel. You don’t lose a person like this, think on Grand Hotel! He said he did something small, but doing something small can have a massive effect on someone else and it most certainly did. I am so impressed with this 17 yr old, most are just out for themselves. I will never forget this act of kindness, it more than made our weekend extra special. Thank you so much.

Google
Amazing location, the staff and service is out of this world! 10 out of 10. From front desk to doorman. To cleaners to the staff in the registry wow ! All top. I went with kids they were so accommodating. Only thing I would change is - spent 7 days there, and the pastries were not fresh ever. Always harder and slightly stale. My advice is just sign up to a local bakery and bring them in fresh everyday

Excellent reception! Although we arrived early, they welcomed us warmly and prepared the rooms for us. They even upgraded our room, which was a wonderful surprise. The hotel’s location is truly fantastic, and all the staff were very friendly and welcoming. A special thanks to the young lady who received us — her hospitality was outstanding. Fahad & Maha

Great staff and genuine hospitality, our suite was amazing and dinner in Lady Libertine, breakfast at Register club were both great. Housekeeping team work hard and attention to detail very noticeable. Special thanks to the ladies at reception during our checkout on Wed, 26th for the very thoughtful gifts for my children and personal note in our suite.

From meeting the doorman at the entrance, to the reception desk, to the barman at Lady Libertine, this is a truly enjoyable place to stay. My wife and I were visiting from the US and thoroughly enjoyed the Grand. Natalie, Jo and Matt at reception were wonderful, as was the staff at The Register dining room. Louis, the barman, was a joy to converse with and makes great cocktails. The room was a beautiful suite; very comfortable, quiet and exceptionally clean. Close to Waverly station for rail travel and great walking neighborhoods, nearby shopping and within walking distance to Edinburgh Castle.
