Quebec Pushes Back Last Call for Restaurants and Bars in Time for US Tourism and Montreal Pride | Eater Montreal

"A downtown French brasserie on Peel Street that filed for protection under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act at the end of June and now carries a reported deficit of $685,940; owner Alain Creton called the filing the result of a “little misunderstanding” with his landlord but said the restaurant has been overwhelmingly busy since coronavirus restrictions eased. Creton terminated the lease on July 16—compounding the debt because landlords may claim unpaid rent and a portion of future rent—while former chef Christian Peillon, who had earlier been ruled owed three years' salary for a constructive dismissal, was the restaurant's largest creditor until the landlord became so; a debt-settling proposal accepted by the landlord would see Peillon receive only 5 percent of what he is owed, and he plans to contest that in court on September 9. The restaurant reportedly remains open on Peel Street despite the lease termination taking effect July 17." - Valerie Silva

First thing first all I could give this restaurant four stars, but since they charged us nine dollars for a plastic bottle of water which is less than one dollar in the grocery store and it doesn’t make sense to me I’ll give them three stars. Now we’re growing your head for the overview: We had five course meal dinner at this restaurant the starters we’re OK but the fish one was not to my taste then we had foie gras which was good quality and the other dish was made by avocado was tasting OK. The waitress forgot that we only received three courses and she thought that we are we have to go ahead for payment and we reminded her that we hadn’t take our main and dessert. As our main we had risotto which was made with saffron, I was tasting very good and the other dish which was with me mashed potato, and some vegetables was tasting good as well. As dessert, I loved both when I was taking them together. I was different taste, which I loved.

We were sat down in between two tables that were already occupied, felt like a meat in a sandwich. I understand it’s helps servers to serve better and keep track of there tables, but it was weird, bcoz there was less than few inches of distance between and the person seated behind me, you can literally hear other people talk in your ear bcoz of that. And, the tablecloth isn’t it outdated already, but maybe we can try to keep it clean, but the table I was seated at, was stained, they need to try harder to keep up to keep it clean. The drinks were super expensive for the experience you get. But the drinks were good, that’s for sure. Also, they need to increase the volume of the music a bit, bcoz I can hear people more than the music.

I was at the cigar lounge , super classy and nice elegant environment, the place is cozy and clean , tv available and confortable chairs , small but good selection of Cuban cigars . Not bad price , feels good to have a place like this downtown . I didn’t try the food , just the cigar lounge but I’ll definitely be back for the food also :) thanks for a great start of my day

Google
Food is good. Only problem is the service. Those 3 waitress were just gossiping behind us and didn't pay attention to their customers. We finished our main course and waited 10 mins but still nobody came. My husband had to stand up and waive them to get their attention. Also, they forgot what we ordered twice during the meal. Hope the owner can improve this.

Google
We had excellent service from Selma. A lovely glass of Sancerre. We shared the smoked salmon and the avocado and crab starters and both had the duck - confit canard. The food was delicious- the best duck I have ever had. Thoroughly recommend.

I went to Chez Alexandre for dinner and also revisited the hidden cigar lounge on the second floor, one of Montreal’s best kept secrets if you're into cigars. It's been a while since I'd been, and while the space is a bit aged, it has a lot of character and history. You can bring your own cigar, and it's usually quiet during the week, which makes it a great spot to unwind. I highly recommend ordering an Americano with a shot of Baileys on the side, plus two sugar cubes. It's a simple pleasure that fits the vibe perfectly. The food downstairs was average, but the service was good. And don’t miss the photo wall on the main floor. It’s packed with Montreal history and old-school charm. Fun fact for those who remember, the club next door used to be the iconic Funky Town. Also worth mentioning, this is one of the few places I know that has Peroni on tap. If you're driving, ask about the free parking deal when you make your reservation. They offer parking in a nearby building if you're dining in. Definitely a unique spot in Montreal worth checking out.

Google
We had a lovely meal at Chez Alexandre. It was our anniversary over the weekend and they did not disappoint for our celebration. The food was excellent and timed perfectly. They provided suggestions that complimented each other and our wines. For the wines they have a lovely list and as it was something special we did splurge and they handled the wines as if it were every day (including moving us to a bit larger table to accommodate our selections. The service was all you could ask for. Our server, with one of his teammates took care of all our needs, were friendly and informative but allowed us our time and privacy. Definitely a place we'd recommend for something special, or just a perfect evening out.

Google
I always come here when visiting. Locals come here and was recommended to me by a local. It feels authentic, a neighborhood joint. Food is very solid. The staff are nice but definitely in charge. Feels like this place has been open for a long time. If you’re looking for a place that’s not too packed to stop in and get some steak frites, this is it.

Yelp
Alexandre et Fils or Chez Alexandre is a nice cafe open late in Montreal. It is next to the highly regarded Ferreira seafood institution and among a number of establishments concentrated in this area of Montreal. Late in Montreal is relative. They will close well before 0100 on a Saturday night, but everything else is already closed. I came with a friend to experience their upper back room for cigars, but ordered food before the kitchen closed. The wings were better than the calamari, but they were the last orders and perhaps the kitchen did not give 100 percent effort. Two Guinness, wings, and profiterole with tip came to $94 CAD. The service was first rate as was the profiterole! Afterwards, the cigar room was a nice experience and one to which most people in the US could relate. It's quieter in here and more laid back, conducive to conversation. Here you can meet and get to know people. Stogies in Montreal is, in contrast, for a younger crowd interested in a louder club atmosphere where conversation is challenging. Here at Chez Alexandre or Alexandre et Fils, the wood paneled walls and leather lounge seating offer the relaxing atmosphere to which one is accustomed and one can do fine dining elsewhere and stop here afterwards for your smokes. They have cigars, but you would be advised to bring your own here without a cutting fee. This is where I would come as a repeat patron if I lived in Montreal and among the relative few places grandfathered into the tobacco license where one can enjoy a cigar in Montreal. 3.9 stars!

Yelp
This is a Montreal classic and a must have visit. We had the beef tartar and the fois gras. Delicious. The tartar is served by asking how you'd like it mixed. The service was solid and high class. The vibe is very french bistro. Always a good time!

Yelp
Very friendly staff, a busy and colorful ambiance, the food was good and I had a great brunch. While I saw staff cleaning up, the place is in need of a good general clean.

Yelp
This was one of the few places that was open late on a Sunday evening. The staff was extremely friendly very nice very knowledgeable of the menu the restaurant itself is pretty large. It's a two-story restaurant with plenty of seating area. Plus they have kind of like a front patio sitting area as well. Now the food was fine there wasn't anything special about the salad and the pasta we had high hopes when we saw it come it looked amazing. It was a great presentation, but the taste was just not there. It was very bland.

Yelp
I'm not sure what's going on in there. Stopped in for a drink and quick bite while shopping. We sat at the bar, there was one drunk guy already seated there, maybe 5 people in the restaurant downstairs, a bachelor party upstairs. It smelled of smoke .... I didn't know upstairs was a cigar bar. I ordered an espresso martini. The young bartender said I've never made one but if you pull it up I can. I passed, ordered gin and tonic instead. I was only in the establishment for maybe 30 minutes. In that 30 minutes she served the already drunk guy 3 shots and a beer. It was uncomfortable. I ordered mussels and fries. The mussels were okay but kind of bland, the fries were cold and lukewarm. I requested new ones, they came out almost burnt. Clearly, no fault of the bartender. Both the bartender and bar back were young ladies, I assume and hope at least 21, but they looked younger than that. Their uniform was small, tiny black dresses or 2 pieces, both of them tugged at their clothes the entire time. They were clearly uncomfortable too. It's an odd place, old vibe, wouldn't return and I hope the young bartenders, waitresses and bar backs are working there willingly.

Yelp
I am so delighted with Chez Alexandre. This is it - the only true French bistro left around the Ville-Marie area that I know of. All other French bistros have updated and adapted their dishes to become more fusion-based, local-centric, trendy-forward, yadda yadda. I don't blame them but there is something to be said for going back to the basics of French cuisine; the kind of dishes that contain copious amounts of butter and cream with nary an apology, bless them! They continue to churn out the best French fare; boudin, confit duck, cassoulet... the list goes on and on. I'm grateful that they are still around, going strong, and keeping their beautiful menu & traditions alive. The boudin sausage with Robuchon-style mashed potatoes and caramelized apples is a must for any boudin fan. Even the service is delightfully... forward. (ah... so French!) I'm already looking forward to my return.

Yelp
We selected this place as we were walking down the street and the hostess was very friendly. The bread and olive were great appetizers. The food and ambience were just perfect, along with the fast and convenient at first. The fish and chips were also outstanding, and the chocolate soufflé was just fantastic on top. A major downside however was the extremely slow service.

Yelp
A great bistro which offer outdoor dining under a tent. The service was exceptional as we popped in for lunch. Great food and the wine was chilled and added for a nice experience. Very easy to get to as it is in the downtown area. For those traveling from other countries, your bill will be in Canadian dollars.

Yelp
We arrived on a busy Friday night on Grand Prix weekend, one of Montreal's biggest tourist events of the year. Reservation for 8 made well in advance for dinner and cigar bar. Atmosphere seemed good, lots of people, busy etc. - our group was generally optimistic when we entered. We were then escorted upstairs where no one else was seated, no ambiance at all, and hidden away in a corner near, but not in, the cigar bar. Waitress - who appeared to be perhaps working her first night ever - managed to get our very simple drink order very wrong. When asked about what cocktails the bartender could make, we were told (politely) that she didn't know because she doesn't drink. Ha! After 20 minutes of waiting and confusion we managed to get a few beers and 2 vodka sodas in hand. Ridiculous. We ordered calamari for an appetizer for the group. The pictured microwaved, frozen garbage was delivered - the plate as shown is untouched by us. An absolute embarrassment. Starving, we ate it. Got in our orders - nearly everyone requested the most generic steak bavette- 1 or 2 brave souls ventured outside the box and got lamb. After nearly 40 minutes most of the dinners arrived, all except mine (event was my bachelor party, incidentally). 10 minutes later my tiny, under cooked steak arrived when everyone else was finishing. We also had requested a cigar bar room as part of our reservation. I guess that was a waste of time, because all spaces were filled and we were never even given options on this front. Completely disregarded by the staff on this request. Thankfully, the other 2 nights we had reservations at real restaurants. This establishment is a joke, it was so pathetic we could only laugh. I go to Montreal for this weekend most years. Half the trip is about the food and culture of the city. rest assured, chez alexandre, I will never be coming back to this laughable dump of an establishment, I resent that my friends paid full price for late, cold, undercooked food, bad drinks and absolutely no charm, atmosphere, or redeeming qualities. You ignored our request, couldn't get anything right, and made less than 0 effort to make up for it. The very worst example of customer service and food quality I have ever seen in 15 years of visiting this city. The waitress, bless her heart, was at least earnestly trying her best. Do not waste your time at this sad, passe´tourist trap. I should have known better, and will tell anyone I ever meet in Montreal, or who may be traveling there, to avoid like the plague.

Yelp
Stopped to eat there today and found the outside seating to be awesome on a beautiful day. The service itself was great. The owner/manager was extremely friendly and made us feel welcome. Our waitress was kind and went out of her way to help and take care of us. The food itself was great and the drinks were awesome as well. I would return and try some new food. The fries and lobster mayo were quite tasty. And their crème brûlée is recommended as well.

Yelp
Here's a place I've walked by at least 100 times but never stopped in. Wifey and I had walked up the hill to visit Campo around the corner but it's closed on Sunday (lol, check out my Campo review to call first before going...it's CLEARLY closed on Sundays...). Anyway it was getting late for lunch and Alexandre was open so we grabbed a seat on the very nice terrace. Let's address the elephant in the room...pricing. I see many of the reviews point that out as an issue and there is some truth to the complaints. Everything was priced about $5-$10 higher than I would expect, nothing outrageous as some have written but still noticeably steep for what's on the plate. I had the Croque-monsieur with fries and Barb had the Caesar Salad. Both lunches were very good and I would definitely return based on the quality of the food. Service was fast, friendly and way above average!

Marie D.

Yelp
Certainement pas une brasserie française! Plutôt un Hooter like restaurant avec des jeunes filles tres aimables mais habillées trop légèrement pour le service déjeuner.... Une ambiance passée des années 70-80..... Trying to pass less than average food with sexualizing young women is a total turn off!

Yelp
Went here for a group/work dinner. It's right next door to the office, hence our officemates are regulars. Not sure if that impacted anything, however, service was out of sight. This is a pricey place, be warned you will spend your money here. I had the Tartare - steak style with oyster appetizers. The oysters were nothing special, good, not phenomenal. The steak tartare was a generous portion, would have liked another piece of the bread to go with it as the texture of tartare is a little strange and the bread helps balance the mouth feel. The fries here (frites) are fantastic - crisped and salted perfectly.

Yelp
Great Little Café with indoor and outdoor seating. Wonderful place to stop and have a drink and a quick bite to eat. The guys took advantage of the Second floor cigar room while we enjoyed a bottle of champagne. The service was great the owner stopped by and chatted with us for a while. We had onion soup and croque monsieur.

margi l.

Yelp
Terrible food but an excellent server (sorry I didn't get his name but the only male server working Fri 6/7 at 2pm)). Apparently changed their menu this year for F1 and it is bad! (Couldn't even get a basic Salad Nicoise- for lunch at a French restaurant?!) they only offered a 'supposed' Caesar salad made with bottled dressing, no croutons, and not an anchovy in sight nor in flavor. Additionally, an unappetizing appetizer of rubbery, undercooked chicken wings- couldn't they have at least put a couple of sticks of celery on the plate?!! Ugh! The owner/manager, Alain, was dismissive and rude and appears only interested in groping buxom young ladies and making them pose for photos with him- everyone else is ignored!! Go elsewhere!!

Yelp
Came in for a lunch with a frien. Atmosphere was cozy and service was fabulous. We had fried calamari and coconut breaded shrimp to start and I had the salmon and my friend had the mussels. The food was nothing to write home about and the mussels were a bit over cooked and the salmon didn't taste that fresh. The presentation was nice and their bread was really fresh (might have been my favourite part of the meal). We had a few glasses of Prosecco and some Fronsac wine as well and sambuca and espresso to finish the meal. Overall, the location is convenient, the staff are extremely friendly and the restaurant is cute and clean. I would not come back, however, as the food was mediocre especially for the price point.

Yelp
Not sure why this place only got 2 stars but good thing I didn't use Yelp this time around. The food was outstanding!!! Even the frites!!! Maybe the price is a little on the high side, but they do offer 1/2 price for students
google avatar

Tatiiana L.

Yelp
The reason why I'm not giving this place 3 stars + is because of the prices. Let's be clear m! I'm not cheap when I go out to eat but if I'm ordering basic food that comes with no sides I shouldn't be Paying that much money. Prices don't match up to the place. Moving along. I ordered the steak with home fries but instead got French fries.. whatever.. I was starving and ended up eating it anyway. The steak was really good and the fries average as any fries would be. I ordered my daughter chicken wings with fries (an order of 6 small wings was $16 & the fries came separate at an extra cost!! My cousin got French onion soup which she said tasted sour. The waiter was nice so thumbs up to him. Besides that I wouldn't go back here when I do make a trip out to Montreal again.

Yelp
The food is okay. Croque Monsieur left much to be desired. Salmon tartare was okay. It's all sort of...okay.

Kevin C.

Yelp
Recommended by our concierge at the hotel nearby, but was a bit apprehensive based on some reviews. However, we went and it was very good. Excellent martinis and decent house wine. We had the cheese plate, very good. Then had the crab and avocado, which was excellent. Then had onion soup, which was also excellent. We did not have entrees, we were full. Service was outstanding. The restaurant was quiet as we visited on a Monday night. They do have a cigar room on the second floor and I could see how that might bother some people on a busy night, but we didn't notice any cigar smell (doesn't bother anyhow). I recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
Last minute stop to have a bite. Parisian brasserie with some flavour. I was greeted by friendly smiles even thou they were under a mask. I sanitized my hands and was seated at the table on the terrace on this beautiful evening. The popular choice here is steak and fries, no need to go further. I did ask the hostess if they over cook the veggies? I was impressed with her honesty that lead me not to order the veggie plate. My steak was medium rare with much flavour. Great pit stop! Cappuccino for the signature ending.

Yelp
Wandered here as a group of four on a Friday afternoon for some brunch time eats. Spacious/fancy interior with an old-school setup and dressed-up wait staff. Menu has a little bit of everything, albeit at a high price point. Decided on just splitting the Omelette ($25) and Wings ($13). Omelette is your standard fare - a combination of eggs, cheese, and some added mushrooms for flavor. Could have used more salt though otherwise good. For the wings - there are about eight moderate sized sections of chicken that were not too greasy. Overall the wait staff was friendly and the ambiance is pleasant. Prices are higher than expected, so better to go when you want a more involved meal.

Yelp
The place looks like it needs a refresh but the food made up for it. We had a slightly longer wait than normal for a table of 6. I really enjoyed the trout with almonds, Buttery mashed potatoes (server said it's 1:1 butter to potatoes which was believable) and spinach. The trout was a touch salty but still good and perfectly cooked! One of the top trout dishes. Server was friendly and funny. He spoke English to us which was great. Everyone enjoyed their meal at our table - from lobster to risotto with scallops. I would highly recommend the trout. They were able to serve gluten free options.

Yelp
Well, the position of Alexandre is very very good, just near peel station. Our appartment is just nearby and every evening could see many people stay here have some food or drink. Yesterday, with my roomate, we decided to have some beers, then, we came here. The service is nice, as we already had dinner, only ordered two local beers and some fries and chicken wings. Compared to the food, I rather like the environment. We stayed outside and just relax, look at the street, people and cars, think nothing only for some chating. It's a nice place for a drink

Yelp
When I go to a French restaurant with such prices, I'm expecting excellent service and gourmet, or at least, good food. In a few words, food was boring...bland and no taste...& low quality. The server wasn't even able to answer questions about the dish I ordered, but I took the risk. Some details: * I ordered the Choucroute de Mer, one serving each of salmon, haddock, shrimp, scallop and a potato, served on cooked shredded cabbage and juices. Cooked OK but nothing was seasoned, food was sitting on warm cabbage and a lot of water which I thought were juices, wouldn't even call it jus. I only finished it because I was hungry and it cost 30$. Steak: cooked well but served with poorly cut fries, on some plates hot and crisp, on others small warm leftovers from the previous batch. Some ordered a side salad with the steak which was a few leaves with a dressing that also has no taste. Presentation: nothing eye catching; no colour, no arrangement, no elevation... Cheep portions was the first impression. What the heck is their chef doing and what is their quality control? The best part of the meal was my beer. I'm never going there again

Yelp
I received friendly and attentive service - I had 3 different servers who took turns coming by every 10 minutes to say "bon appetit" or ask how everything was. I ordered the lobster lunch special for $38 plus tax - a bargain based on how big the meal was. They start you off with bread - it's fresh and the inside is soft as can be. They also give you olives, flatbread crackers and a little bit of olive oil for dipping. It was so good, I couldn't stop eating and started to feel full before even receiving my appetizer. The vegetable soup I ordered was placed before me about 5 minutes after my bread bonanza. Yes, service here is extremely fast. The soup is fairly tasty - a smooth, creamy emulsion of vegetables and herbs. A hint of lemon adds a pleasing "zinginess". I broke a few crackers in the soup for the crunch factor and lapped everything up fairly quickly. While waiting for my main course, I glanced around the room - It's a large space, but designed to make people feel at home. The warm colour scheme, soft lighting and French-inspired paintings add to the concept. I felt settled and comfortable. The lobster is served cold and with (oddly enough) unmelted butter. Some pieces of lobster were grainy and tasted slightly stale. There is a small salad served with it that comprises of chopped lobster, onion, celery, light tartar sauce and plenty of lemon juice. I found it refreshing but not particularly impressive. On the side were some fries that were the best part of the meal. They were a medium cut of some wonderfully fresh potatoes and had the perfect level of crispness and saltiness. For the first time ever, I had no desire to dip my fries in ketchup - They tasted wonderful just as they were. No matter how full I am, I always have room for dessert. I was served a large mound of soft meringue floating like an iceberg in a sea of milky sauce that tasted like créme caramel and vanilla bean. I enjoyed every bit of it along with my coffee that complimented the rich, sweet dish beautifully. I was also served 2 bite-sized hard meringues with smiley faces on them, which I found adorable. Overall, my experience was pleasant, but not outstanding.

Yelp
How delightful to escape from a rainy winter day before Christmas into this lively, classic French bistro and tuck into a perfect lunch menu: fish and chips with floating island for dessert. Toulouse Lautrec would have felt at home sketching the flirty waitresses and waiters. Vive la France!

Yelp
My wife and I were in Montreal for the weekend and could not have found a better spot to celebrate my birthday. We were greeted by Alain and made to feel right at home and very much welcomed. The food was fantastic with a tremendous variety of options. We will certainly be back on our next visit and would recommend this unique restaurant to anyone looking for authenticity and uniqueness that we thought no longer existed.

Yelp
Not bad of a place but nothing to special, considering the fact a pint is 11$. May as well just go to McLean's down the street much better prices. Haven't checked out the cigar lounge yet but maybe I'll come back to check it out.

Yelp
Nice neighborhood bistro, with the classics (tartare, steak, fish, salads, lamb etc). We got very decent service, and the food was satisfying but missing a little individuality. Everything felt pretty standard. The interior is quite interesting, with old murales and shiny bright lights and mirrors juxtaposed, it's quite an interesting decor - a bit reminiscent of the 90s.

Yelp
I should have read other reviews before we stopped by for dinner... but after a show at Bell Centre, we were hungry and cold, looking for a warm place to sit down and eat. Coming up the Peel, we found this place on our way back to our hotel. Food and service was okay, but same as all other reviews, price was very expensive for what we got. This was the most expensive meal we had in Montreal, and the quality was disappointing. Try other places before you stop here, unless you want to pay a lot of money for mediocre food.

Yelp
I had a very lovely lunch at this restaurant. Did you know it was the first the serve draft beer back in 1982? The owner Monsieur Alain welcomed us at our arrival and he was extremely friendly and helpful. In fact, all the staff was. There seemed to be a lot of regulars which is always a good sign. I guessed this happens when the owner is there for more than 40 years. The décor: It's a french brasserie and does look like any one in Paris. Even the chairs in the front section are the exact same rattan-like you'd find on a French terrace. Extremely traditional and kitsch, in a comfortable way. The attention to detail is put on what matters. Tablecloth are impeccable, glassware is top quality especially for champagne, silver cutlery. The owner told us there would be some renovation soon to freshen up the place. Food: Simple but very pleasant. I started with a duck and foie gras terrine with lentils. It was tasty and soft. My friend had the fish quenelle. It was even more flavorsome. For the main course I took the duck confit. Obviously! (I'm in love with duck) it was very classic but well prepared. The salad missed vinaigrette but the potatoes were crispy and good. My friend took the fish of the day, a bar filet. It was simply put in the plate, without any side dish. Even by itself, it was the best dish of the whole meal. Tasty, fresh, and just lovely. Wine: We were told Alexandre is the place to drink Champagne. And so we did. We had a piper-Heidseick by the glass and then a bottle of Charles Heidseick. They have an agreement with this champagne so they put it forward even if they have great other choices. It is an underrated champagne which a always enjoy a lot. The prices were very reasonable. They don't have a sommelier on site but the wine card was built up by Jessica Harnois, herself. Other little detail, they have Badoit for sparkling water instead of the usual Eska. I like it better, but that's some personal choice. Overall, I'd say it's an old-fashioned place with a lot of history and stories. It has a lot to say and offer.

Yelp
This restaurant was recommended by numerous websites prior to my arrival here in Montreal, so I thought it would be great to take my girlfriend there. The short answer is that we had a very pleasant time. In detail: When we arrived we found that the menu was a little pricier than we'd had anticipated, and though not a HUGE selection of foods, some very nice selections anyhow. My girlfriend at the Warm Goat Cheese Salad and I had a "Super" Burger with Blue Cheese on it and a side of fries. Everything tasted SUPERB! The only reason I gave it one less star was because of the service. It wasn't BAD by any means, but at the time we went (around 6pm on a weekday evening) there were four girls in VERY short skirts serving everyone. Seems weird for such a place. They were all very friendly, but also tended to hover and watch us eat. Being a server myself, I know that you can watch your table without making it obvious. It was quite obvious. Otherwise, everything was great... just wanted to point that out and that's why I gave it 4 stars. I think it's a great place for businessmen after work!

Andrew N.

Yelp
If I could give this place 0 stars I would, Service: Not bad but nothing to write home about. He didn't have a drink menu but didn't expect one from a restaurant. Escargot: Nothing crazy, paid 16 dollars for 6 snails... it's an appetizer so I'm not surprised Whiskey Sour: Don't think they know what a whiskey sour is, pretty sure they just dumped lemon juice in a cup a whiskey and called it a day. Here's the kicker... my 'whiskey sour' costed 11 dollars. This place is a joke.

Yelp
What I get for not having the energy to check Yelp before dining somewhere is a mediocre meal like we had here. We just walked by and randomly decided to dine here. The hostess and our waitress were very kind - but the service was SLOW and the food bland. Dressing up all the ladies in skimpy clothes does not make the food taste any better. Their kitchen also needs to learn how to marinate foods or use sauces to their advantage. Here's a quick breakdown: - bone marrow - so bland and not worth it. The bones are not cut lengthwise, so the unseasoned marrow is deep and hard to get to. - chicken panini - the chicken was dry from being over cooked and it was under seasoned. The panini could have used some spread or sauce inside since it was very dry and bland. - fish and chips - the fish was okay but the fries were all little bits in both my husband and brother's order of it - it looked like they got the very bottom of the bag of frozen fries. My recommendation is to move onto another restaurant...sorry Alexandre Restaurant.

Yelp
Came in tonight, a Friday. Visiting Montreal and enjoying our stay. Everyone is very friendly. The waiter took our drink order. Then we waited over 30 minutes for someone to take our food order. It wasn't THAT busy. The manager ended up taking our order. They seemed to think we didn't understand French. There were words between the manager and our server. Another long wait. People were being served around us. Our food finally arrived. My moulles frites were cold. And the mayo served had a crust. I didn't know if they were from the lunch serving or what. I asked the waiter to take it back with no replacement. But they still brought it back. The manager brought it to me and again, less than luke warm. I didn't eat any of it. My wife's meal was fine. She had the salad nicoise and enjoyed it. I take issue with the service. I didn't trust my food. It was seafood, after all. Who wants to eat cold mussels?? Who would trust that? We were ignored as well. I went to pay my bill and informed the manager of my complaint. To his credit, he offered to remove my order from the bill. I declined. I'm not looking for compensation. I'm looking for good service. They should have re made my meal or offered something else off of the menu. As I said, I didn't eat anything from my main. I ate some bread and some fries. $80 bucks. That's why I am posting here. Go somewhere else.

Yelp
This is a gorgeous French bistro in centre-ville Montreal. The food and service have been wonderful. The owner, alexandre greeted us at the door and was as charming as could be. We were sat in a cozy corner able to watch the snowfall and the people walking by. Pierre was our server but felt more like an "ami" our friend. Escargot to die for and a lovely ambiance. Wish we had more time to come back and check out the pub and cigar lounge upstairs. An overall delicious and delightful experience. We had a lovely relaxing time. It was like being in a small village in France where friends come to share and laugh. Merci!!

Yelp
I knew when I walked in and it smelled like smoke and looked like a run down diner that it was a bad sign. Then I looked at the menu and they charge the same price as a high end French restaurant. This was NO French restaurant and service is horrible!

Yelp
Our visit to this restaurant has been the only black smudge on our trip to Montreal. We had been recommended this place by our hotel. The food was extremely low quality. I got a steak which was so clearly frozen and of poor quality that I could I gotten it at a diner in Florida for $6.50. Everything seemed to have been frozen at some point and was way way way overpriced for the poor quality. There was weird techno music playing in the background. On top of it, I had ordered off a set menu, but then was charged regular menu price. When I pointed it out to the waiter, he claimed I had said the wrong thing in French. I had clearly pointed to the set menu on the English side of the menu when I ordered. But the way he responded to me when I raised it to him left me somehow apologizing to him for the mistake. The waiter served to make me embarrassed and then bitter that I was overcharged. This is the only time I've been made to feel unwelcome as a tourist during my time in Montreal. The only redeeming quality was the small glass of kir and champagne they offered women upon being seated. Our bill came to $90 and was the quality of a $15 diner. Definitely avoid it here.

Yelp
What the? It's like I walked into a Star Trek holodeck version of a desperately middle aged casino lounge, complete with patterned overkill on the decor and a smothering, velvety feel. Woah, what happened? Stinking of shampooed carpet that reeks of two decades of cigar smoke, this place is rich on entertainment value. And who was Joe Mafia on his phone in the corner with all the loose leaf paperwork? I dunno, but one scotch down and I'm outta here. The lonely hearts club ogling me at the bar is too much.

Yelp
Slow apathetic service. Overpriced. Avoid this place. Server did not bring drinks until asked for the third time. Food took forever to come. Dish-ware was dirty. Staff did not seem to care. There are so many wonderful places to eat in Montreal, do yourself a favor and don't waste your time here.

Yelp
My friend and I tried the brunch plate. We were both disappointed in that the eggs Benedict were not runny, and the service was not great (had to ask the waitress many times for a few things). Ordering the brunch plate comes with a dessert (don't remember the name) that was better than the main meal I find.

Yelp
I was brought to this place by a good friend that had been coming here since he was a child. The ambiance is nice, and the staff was very attentive and ready to serve. But, my issue with this place wasn't the taste of the food or service of the staff. It was the pricing of the food...I admit, the food was good but the pricing of the dishes were WAY OVER PRICED!!! This is the reason why I'm giving it 3 stars. I just don't think that the pricing of the food is adequate for the type of food that they serve. Note: I had way better food at cheaper pricing around the same area of this restaurant's location.

Yelp
Fun place, not exceptional service, however also a cigar lounge upstairs so it just stinks throughout. No accessible washrooms, although washrooms are well-appointed (!) Food is lacklustre and highly salted. While they said they eould accommodate a slight dietary request, this was not the case. Portions larger than expected, but, really, very $$$ for a plate of wilted fries.

Yelp
No disappointment here. The food and service was very good. Followed our waiters recommendations. Lobster for me, mixed seafood for hubby. Empty plates full stomachs!

Yelp
2.5 Over priced which brings it down a lot. French onion soup was too watery. Salad was eh. Filet was good to great. Friend gave it 4.5/5 higher than I would for the steak but good. Deserts were ok. The service was excellent. The bartender (initially out waitress) was funny and a pleasure. The fact they are open late night was obviously the reason we were there. Loved the music from the past. Good blend of oldies.

Yelp
http://www.chezalexandre.com/eng/index.html Tel. (514) 288-5105 ~ 1454 Peel street, Montreal (Quebec) H3A 1S8 For a delicious and affordable lunch - you can't go wrong. The onion soup is a winter must-have and their lunch offerings are a generous portion! Last year when I stopped in for my annual trip to the winter Highlights festival we were delighted to find that the service and food were still top notch! Looking forward to visiting Montreal in October for a work conference and can't wait to stop in for lunch or maybe try them for dinner this time since I don't have to plan for a special Highlights dinner this trip.

Yelp
Horrible food. Terrible service. Dirty dishes, seats. I wouldn't go back even if you paid me too. What a colossal waste of money and calories.

Yelp
Stay away from this place! We ended up paying almost 200 canadian dollars for very Average cafeteria food. Service was generally good tho.
