Hundreds Show Up After Owner Makes Public Plea For Support | Eater LA

"I found that Andre’s is a 56-year-old, old-school Italian favorite near The Grove that was slated for demolition to make way for a new apartment building; construction was delayed, however, and the restaurant received a lease extension through June 2020, keeping the longtime spot in business for now." - Mona Holmes

We were delighted to visit this traditional restaurant during our trip to Paris! We especially liked the service provided by the waitress Fathi, she was just adorable and very friendly! The dishes were delicious and prices were fair. I recommend it to all who wants to learn French food culture.

Google
Great and authentic atmosphere in Paris city center. We didn’t use any reservation for a lunch and waited in the live queue for 10 min only. The waiters and staff are quite friendly and helpful. The menu is compact but has variety of dishes for any taste. Despite the restaurant is quite famous and popular it’s not overpriced. Highly recommend!

Google
Delightful experience at Chez André! We loved the fresh oysters (#5) and shared the veal stew with rice—so flavorful. Our waitress Fatima recommended a perfect bottle of white wine, and we finished with sorbet and crème brûlée. Highly recommend! Make a reservation and enjoy!

Google
We picked this place completely by chance, and it turned out to be absolutely worth it. From the warm welcome to the authentic atmosphere, everything felt truly French. The food was delicious – we ordered frog legs, a cheese platter, onion soup, and duck leg, and every dish was prepared with great taste and quality. The service was attentive and professional, which made the experience even more enjoyable. The setting itself adds to the charm, making you feel like you’re experiencing a piece of France. Definitely worth your time if you’re in the area!

Google
A very nice classic French restaurant. There are not too many tables so I really suggest to reserve it, otherwise you would have to wait a lot of time before enter. Waiters friendly and helpful, good dishes. Highly recommend.

Google
First time dishing out such low review but it was no excuse for staff to be inattentive to patrons’ needs. Staffs cleared our oyster platter before we finished, when we asked her nicely, she declined and said we made a mistake? Ridiculous. Later she gave us back the 2 oysters we have yet to touch. Oysters and sea Urchin were incredibly fresh and plump. Besides, the frog legs was interesting but not amazing, full of bones, made it difficult to eat. Onion soup was average Took the staff 1/2H to get our bill.

Google
Quite simply our favorite bistro in the 8th. Food is traditional not complicated. Solid price point for the quality of food and service. With three nights in Paris we enjoyed 2 of our evenings at Chez Andre. Reservations are strongly advised.

Google
Both the duck breast and the French sole meunière were excellent, as was the escargot and the crème brûlée. Whereas the flavor of the French onion soup was good, it was not served as piping hot as one would expect (pictured) and thus the cheese was not as melted as one would expect. The garlic butter served with the bread was great, but it would have been nice to also have conventional butter. The service was very professional and attentive, though harried. Our waitress took pains to check in on us even though it seemed that she was looking after the entire outside section and some of the indoor section by herself. However, that is no fault of the waitress but rather the management for not properly staffing. Reservation strongly recommended. We got there at 12:00 and by 12:15 all of the indoor seating was full, and by 12:30 it seemed all the seats were full.

Yelp
Watch your check. They tried to give is a padded check. Half the food we didn't eat. Order a steak frites. Gave us a welll done something with potatoes. They are quick to feed you but never chexk to see how dinner is. The table next to us also got a padded check. Clearly they play the tourists and they ask for gratuity. Very tourist oriented attitude. Better evade and go somewhere else.

Yelp
Pretty average. We arrived without a reservation and the host just kind of huffed. He looked around(we say lots of empty tables) and said "let me see if I can fit you in." It was 6:00PM...early for Paris dinner time. We sat in an area that had only two other occupied tables and about seven around us empty. I assumed that that by 7:00PM they would be full. We ordered a simple dinner. An order of Coq au Vin with pasta, an order or Escargot, and a crock of Onion Soup. Our food arrived within a reasonable time. It all looked very good except for the Coq au Vin...it was just not very appealing. The chicken did not fall off the bone as we were use to. Its flavors just weren't in depth. Maybe they had rushed the cooking. The escargot were ok, and the onion soup was probably the best of the three dishes. We ordered a really nice bottle of bordeaux wine and a cocktail. (We upped the price of our tab by a lot). Service was just not very good and it was slow. Shouldn't have been because they were fitting us in. At 7:15PM none of the tables had been occupied. I watched the host tell people the same thing he told us and then sat them. Is it a Oh, this place is wonderful, we are really booked but I can fit you in and make you feel special. I can't really recommend, but the location is very good. And it might be reasonable if you don't order nice wine and cocktails. Just be simple and get out of there for an ok tab. Inside the restaurant looks great. People seem to be happy. And there seemed to be a few locals but mainly tourist.

Yelp
This restaurant was recommended to us and we thought that we give it a try. Walked in around 1pm during a work day and the restaurant was pretty full, which we thought was a good sign. The atmosphere seemed fine, nothing special when walking in. The staff was friendly and clearly very busy for the amount of people that were there. They were working hard for their money. They had menus in multiple languages which was very helpful and we appreciated. The food arrived at the table shortly after we ordered and arrived at the appropriate temperature. If someone has read my previous posts, they know that is something that I am big about. The food itself was meh. Nothing special. We ordered a salad and it was incredibly salty. The meal was okay and apparently a local specialty but it wasn't for us

Yelp
Family of four came here for dinner. Truth be told this is an overflow place for us not being able to get into Relais Entrecôte which is kitty corner from here. Both places had lines. Host was nice enough to seat us without a reservation as the place was quite overwhelmed. Food highlights: lentils with mustard vinaigrette were really good. So was the French bread and butter. Divine actually. French onion soup was also a big hit. But the two steaks....for one, they took about an hour and arrived way after all the other dishes. They were also very well done when we asked for medium. Just way overcooked. Disappointed to say the least. However we did get two free deserts a chocolate mousse and a crème brûlée. So they did try to make it up to us. Price also reasonable. Would give them another chance maybe when it is not so busy.

Yelp
Had a lovely Monday lunch. We tried the sea bass and the lunch special which was a hearty sausage and refined mashed potato. The sea bass was served on a bed of roasted vegetables: eggplant, peppers, onion, zucchini with a light sauce with plenty of flavor. The attentive service and relaxing cool outdoor seating was a relief in this busy neighborhood.
google avatar

Yelp
Service was not friendly or attentive, to be expected but not to this level. Food was ok. Nothing special at all which makes me wonder why it's so highly recommended by the hotels. The Mille feuille "André" was burnt. Overall not a repeater.
google avatar

Yelp
Wonderful restaurant close to our hotel. The Cou Au Vin special was some of the best we've ever had. The green bean salad was also so fresh & delicious. Our wait staff was friendly, attentive & offered suggestions.

Yelp
Our favorite dinner in Paris!! And cannot recommend enough! Though I had accidentally reserved for the next day (reservation requests made through email), the host still managed to seat us and I'm so glad he did! We enjoyed every dish: 1) The onion soup was perfectly seasoned and just cheesy enough! 2) I may be biased since this was my first escargot in Paris but this was everything I imagined and more - so buttery yet flavorful with the herbs; I kept dipping my bread in for more! But half a dozen is a good amount - may be too overwhelmed and stuffed for other dishes if we had gotten the dozen. 3) The steak was the showstopper - cooked perfectly medium as requested and the aioli was delicious! My friend wiped her plate clean! 4) I still dream about the crème brûlée - we thought we'd be too full but one bite opened up a whole new stomach! This was light yet perfectly balanced to add a sweet finish to our night.

Yelp
Our family arrived without a reservation at a stressful time for restaurants in the city. Paris was playing to win the UEFA championship and places were closing all around. The staff welcomed us with open arms and we had a fantastic meal. Everyone had the steak frites and they did not disappoint! 10 out of 10. We will come back to Chez Andre every time we visit Paris.

Yelp
Very rude waitress would not recommend she is only nice to people who speak french and mixed up the orders
google avatar

Maddy A.

Yelp
Stopped here after a day of exploring and loved it! The eggs were so delish & the burrata had greatt flavor. Average French onion soup but still good, would've loved more bread & cheese in it- flavor was great. Loved the outdoor seating!

Yelp
Amazing restaurant - all you can imagine Paris to be - personal exceptional service, excellent food - fantastic atmosphere!! I love it!!

Yelp
This restaurant is not in the center of craziness which makes it a gem in the center tourist attractions. Food is great, fresh, tasty and on time. Servers are attentive, polite and professional. Should give it a try.

Yelp
I work concierge director is here on our first night in Paris. We didn't have any specific plans. It's directly across from a very famous steak and Frites place with a line of mile along, so it makes for good people watching if you sit outside, lol. At first, we thought oh no, they sent us to a American bistro, and the food was not going to be any good and we would be surrounded with nothing but Americans. However, we were pleasantly surprised to find that the food is pretty amazing, and the restaurant is filled with locals and tourists alike. It was so good. In fact, that we ate there two nights in a row! The chocolate mousse is on par with some of the best in the city, and the onion soup was the best I've had so far. I would recommend to stay away from the steak and scallops, but everything else we've tried so far has been 10 out of 10!!

Yelp
Our first meal in Paris for lunch. A cute bistro near our hotel. We shared three appetizers. The mushroom salad was only fair. The octopus salad was very good. The escargot was great. The service was friendly and welcoming. Would definitely go back to try other things on the menu.
google avatar

Maria E.

Yelp
Great frog legs, great Burrata. Filet steak was very tough but had a good flavor. Octopus was extremely tough. Waitress was amazing! Made special accommodations. If you are keto, ask for the frog legs to not be dusted in flour.

Susan L.

Yelp
Everything's was amazing!! Best meal so far in Paris!! Highly recommend the sea bass. Desserts are the best!

Yelp
very intimate restaurant. had to call to secure a reservation. seems very busy place without one! I got the chicken and my husband got the steak. very well cooked and enjoyable

Yelp
Solid old school - food and atmosphere! From escargot to soup du poussin! OMG Heaven on earth Just went over for auto show- in paris 3 days/ ate lunch here twice/ say what you want- but I totally enjoyed it- Covid is over(at least the total fear!) back to paris And places like this-

Yelp
Family of 4, we had a wonderful dinner at Chez Andre. Sat outside and they brought us a couple of blankets. The kids meal include a cold Coca Cola and either ice cream or crème brûlée. Adults shared flank steak and grilled octopus. Soooo good!!!!!!! I will be dreaming about that octopus. Highly recommend this place. Great service. No complaints.

Yelp
Read good things about Chez Andre and I wanted to try it instead of waiting in line at Le Relais Entrecote again. Would give it 3.5 stars. Pros: - Chez Andre was very accommodating with making reservations online, including a request to seat our large group outside. - the location was on a not overly busy street so not too much street noise sitting outside - There was a very affordable kids set menu that included a drink, entree and dessert for 10 euros. Good for kids under 8-ish. - The escargot was garlicky and delicious - Service was attentive Cons: - the kids "steak frites" was really more of a burger patty and fries... would opt for the salmon next time - we ordered the lamb chop special medium but it came medium well and had this sauce poured over it that I thought it didn't need

Henriette G.

Yelp
It's a lovely spot with delicious food and warm and friendly service. They have an extensive selection of seafoods. Trust their wine recommendations! Great value for a very nice meal!

Jesille K.

Yelp
Amazing staff, food and ambiance. We wish we had more time to savor the moment but kids were exhausted. Despite that and that it was a tad more than our other meals we've had . It was an unexpected surprise. We stumbled into this place as the line for another place was too long. We were happy with our decision. Food- steak was perfect. My kiddo liked the filet mignon with onions. We all loved the creme brûlée and I love the chocolates mousse.

Yelp
If you have good memories from this restaurant from years and years ago, don't go back, you will be highly disappointed. Poor touristic menu, expensive for what you are getting, easy last minute cooking, where all the real French dishes have disappeared? This restaurant has lost its personality and eating there or somewhere else wouldn't make a big difference. This is a sad evolution of another place which once had a good name...

Yelp
Great night. Walked up And we were quickly greeted and seated at 7pm on a Friday night. Our food was excellent and our wait staff was impeccable. Thanks Christoph! You are a rockstar.

Homero S.

Yelp
Excellent food The best service. We had questions about the menu and our server was very helpful in explaining. The atmosphere is also great. Not too loud, you can have a nice conversation

Noelle S.

Yelp
Absolutely loved it! Walked by and managed to get a table. Service was outstanding! The peppercorn steak was cooked perfectly! Also had the profiteroles and ice cream for dessert and that was perfection! One of the best meals I've had and I'm coming back before I leave Paris.
google avatar

Jessie I.

Yelp
It is a very busy place. We didn't have a reservation so we had to wait for a bit. Service was a little worse than other places we had been to on this trip but the food was great. I had the escargot and beef tartare. Both were delicious and flavorful. Dishes were cooked with care. Would definitely eat here again, but will also plan to make a reservation :)
google avatar

Vicki A.

Yelp
While every restaurant was fully packed we visited Chez Andre one day while walking to our hotel. The food here was the best we've experienced our entire stay in Paris. The escargot was tender and flavorful, foie gras was like butter in your mouth, and steak was cooked perfectly. Service was amazing and we loved the location and ambience of sitting outside while sipping our wine. I would go back to Paris just to taste their food again.
google avatar

Yelp
I know this place is supposed to be a hole-in-the-wall French restaurant. However, I was disappointed by the service and quality. First of all, order wine rather than spirits there. I ordered a martini and their definition of the word was... something else entirely. Basically lime-flavored vodka. The burrata with tomato appetizer was tasty, but it's pretty hard to mess up this classic dish. The mushroom appetizer on the other hand, was just bad. The menu needs to specify that the mushrooms are raw and uncooked. I am huge fan of mushrooms, and I wanted to love this dish. But it simply flopped. My dining partner enjoyed the steak, particularly the generous application of pepper on the seared outer skin. The French fries and steak sauce were also solid. My avocado and crab dish (I ordered an app as my meal) was admittedly fresh and flavorful, nothing to critique really. I just wasn't surprised or overwhelmingly impressed by the food, and the service was so-so. Good spot for a steak, I guess.
google avatar

Wayne H.

Yelp
Unfortunately we ordered 2 steak dishes, and a filet dish. All 3 were some of the worse in terms of quality and preparation. disappointing for our first restaurant experience in Paris.
google avatar

Hani A.

Yelp
Came here to dine while our layover in Paris. We arrived to the Champs-Élysées around 10pm and this place was jamming. We were lucky to find a spot inside with no reservations. The waiters spoke great English so this was helpful, we started off with some onion soup along with some burrata cheese. The soup was incredibly delicious, I started dunking pieces of bread inside of it. The burrata was fresh and creamy and the olive oil complimented it. We also ordered their octopus salad and it was also fresh and tasteful. Our entrees were their fillets, they came with loads of French fries. The beef was tender but it wasn't anything exceptional, not sure if I would order it again here. After all this food we couldn't leave without ordering desserts . We ordered their Creme brûlée and their mile feiulle. I can comfortably say the crème's brûlée was among the very best I've ever had. I wouldn't leave this restaurant without trying it. I would definitely come here again
google avatar

Franklin C.

Yelp
I arrived with my wife, table for 2, they sent me a small table blocked for other tables, the waitress doesn't answer to the questions, my wife ordered water and the water never arrived, too expensive for a bad quality of food and service, food expensive and was not good, ambiance good but the service is very poor
google avatar

Vitaly L.

Yelp
Great restaurant. Every time we are in Paris - dinner at Chez Andre is a must. Highly recommend to make a reservation. This time we ordered: Oysters French onion soup Bone marrow Chateaubriand steak and Beef Tartare. And chocolate mousse. Everything was as amazing as always. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Katherine L.

Yelp
Bad attitude waitress. It was cold outside and she insisted that I need to wait outside - also rude ! But all other guests are invited inside regardless they don't have booking. I don't see the difference and why? Maybe because I'm Asian? This is total racism and low educated act, as a matter of fact, she doesn't know what good service mean. Maybe that's why you got a low rating on Yelp.
google avatar

Fanny L.

Yelp
Lovely French restaurant. We sat outdoors and it was so fun. The service was great. The prefix menu for kids was a fab deal (10 euro).
google avatar

Alyssa M.

Yelp
For my first time trip to Paris this was recommend to us by our hotel concierge. It did not disappoint. Our waitress was very sweet and helpful and the wine she recommended for us was excellent! We had an outside table and it was perfect! Our food was delicious as well. We tried escargots for the first time and they were really good! I ordered salmon and veggies and it was cooked and seasoned well. I loved that this restaurant was also a quick 4 minute walk from our hotel. If I ever get the chance to visit again I'd like to eat here again.

Javier G.

Yelp

Mary V.

Yelp
Lovely Parisian restaurant, very helpful to non-fluent French speakers. Snails and frogs legs were divine. Reasonably priced. Highly recommend eating here.
google avatar

MeeLun C.

Yelp
Fantastic French restaurant with great food, ambience and service. We had the marrow bone, avocado tartare with crab, escargots, veal chop, lamb and frog dishes plus for dessert we had the mille-feuille and profiteroles. Yummy
google avatar

Jennifer K.

Yelp
We stopped here for an early dinner. My husband had duck confit which he found to be delicious. I had the aged cheese board entree with port and it was simple and delightful followed by a sea bass with spinach which was very nice. We shared a Rasberry tarte (sorry I can't recall the names in French). The tarte was to die for. Service was friendly even though we don't speak French, we chose the sidewalk seating. It's in a charming neighborhood near Champs Elysees. We will visit this place again. Loved it.
google avatar

Philip S.

Yelp
This place seemed very French, but there were some other tourists dining here and the staff spoke decent English. The tables are really squished together, but luckily it wasn't too crowded when my dad and I ate dinner here. I had the escargot to start and the duck leg for my entree. The escargots were great. Very flavorful but not too heavy. The duck leg was amazing! I wasn't too hungry so I ordered it thinking it would be small, but it was decently sized, and I ended up eating all of it. The duck was cooked so tenderly such that the meat slid off the bone without even using a knife.

Tabitha T.

Yelp
Our dinner was very underwhelming. I started with traditional onion soup. Followed by the Châteaubriand steak with béarnaise sauce. The soup had incredible flavor, the best I've ever had. Sadly that was the best part of the meal. The steak was overcooked and had zero seasoning on it. The flavor of the meat was not any better than a regular filet steak, and truly needed some seasoning. Being from Texas, we know good meat and I had such high hopes for this meal. After dinner, we shared a chocolate mousse. It was a rich, very dark chocolate that tasted like unsweetened dark cocoa powder. It was not worth the $500+ bill for our party of 4 IMHO.

D L.

Yelp
I went for the special Friday only meal of bouillabaise and it was not satisfactory. Read the menu on how this should be prepared. High price for the lack of quality. Overcooked fish and a few mussels. Pour tasteless soup. I looked around and the person who had the chicken - looked old and dry and not freshly cooked - sitting around for some time. Someone else ordered an ordinary hamburger. Not a pleasant experience.
google avatar

Maria D.

Yelp
Food quality is not consistent. Always seems hectic, even when it's slow. Stop in for lunch or late dinner. Fun place.
google avatar

Trang P.

Yelp
I will admit that we did not have a reservation, although we did make that clear with whom seem to be the owner/manager himself. He initially told us that the wait would be "about 45 minutes". He took two parties who did have reservations before us, but took a group of 4 who did not have a reservation. I don't want to accuse that he was favoring French speakers, but we did wait over an hour to be seated. Meanwhile, he kept reassuring us that it would be a few more minutes. Finally another party behind us who later asked him how long the wait would be, he responded in French to them that he is completely booked for the night. He could have just told us that initially.
google avatar

Vanessa M.

Yelp
Super cute restaurant, friendly staff (except for one lady, some more on that later). Food was great quality and good portions. We ordered prawns (a little difficult to eat *with hands*), châteaubriand and demi-poulet with frites maison. Service was fast and attentive except for the one waitress that wasn't even waiting on us. Our waitress placed our sparkling water bottle on the table next to us (there were only three other parties in the restaurant). At one point my partner placed an extra napkins on that table too since ours was full with our plates etc. and the waitress that wasn't helping us came over and looked super angry and said some things in French to us (didn't understand) grabbed the napkin and placed it back on our table... we were like what? We already had the bottle of water on that table placed by our server, the restaurant wasn't full and why was she so angry? Then she walked over within earshot and started speaking in French to another server and looking at us in a mean manner... I made eye contact and said excuse me? Like what the heck? We have no idea why she was so angry with us? Our server noticed and came over and basically said to not pay attention to her. Super weird.

Yelp
Been going ever since my first visit to Paris, in my mid twenties. You know what to expect when you go to Chez André: A great meal, memories, good drink, and great waitresses. I started with the Escargot, delicious as they always are. And I followed with the Duck Confit. Our table also ordered some oysters, and frogs legs. All equally delicious in their own way. We arrived early, before they opened. We sat as soon as they opened and it was a fun, delicious lunch all the way around! Great service, we loved our waitress! Oh and I had a couple Aperol Spritz' just to add some warm and fuzzy to the afternoon of "museuming" at the Musee' d'Orsay

Yelp
It's a favorite restaurant of my family in Paris so far. Each time we are here we are coming at least once for dinner. They serve French dishes. foie gras or snails is perfect for starter. For the main course I would suggest duck filet and cream brûlée to finish our meal. Service is great but a little bit French. If you know what I mean.
