I was genuinely impressed by the level of service at this restaurant. Despite arriving just before closing time, the staff welcomed us warmly and never made us feel rushed. They were incredibly patient, allowing us to enjoy our meal at a comfortable pace. Even after closing hours had passed, they continued to refill our water and check in on us with a smile. It’s rare to find a place that balances efficiency with such genuine hospitality. Highly recommended for both the food and the exceptional service!

Google
Had a really good dinner here. The food is amazing and the service is really quick and friendly. We did the twice cooked pork and the general tao chicken. The pork dish was very authentic and quite spicy which we liked. The general tao chicken was also really good. I wish that dish had some vegetables that came with it. Looking forward to our next visit to try some other dishes.

Google
So damn good. Highly recommend. Really straightforward dining experience because they know their food is right on the money. You get exactly what you pay for flavours are all on point and the portions are healthy. Definitely recommend the general tao and the beef fried noodle. Pork short ribs are also fire service a little bit slow, but it was busy.

The food here is absolutely delicious — truly tastes of Hunan! Every dish is packed with flavor and aroma. A must-visit if you’re craving authentic Hunan cuisine. Highly recommended!

Google
Update July 2025: Service À+ This time we were 7 people on a Friday night we waited 15 min and the food was even better than last time. General Tao is amazing! We also tried the spicy hunan beef which was also great! All around, this place is still incredible for the money you pay and service, best place in Chinatown imho. Low msg Chinese food, very good! I will come back and their service is great really sweet waitresses. The Tsing Tao beer is great also. Prices are great, variety and clean food.

Google
Our absolute favorite Chinese restaurant ! Friday night can be a bit packed so we waited a bit to be seated - the food is amazingly delicious ! Highly recommend the fried pork ribs and the braised chicken and potatoes (I forgot the name)

Google
We visited this cafe last night (Saturday) and were not satisfied. But let's start with the good points. The food is tasty and cheap, but that's all. During the whole time of our stay in the cafe there was smog /smoke. That is, the kitchen hoods are not coping with the load, because of this it’s not pleasant smell and smog in the cafe. Further, we ordered 2 hot dishes, thinking that it is obvious to our waiter that we expect to get them at the same time. We ended up getting the noodles first after really long time. And only 15-20 minutes later after noodles we got our chicken. To which our waitress replied "This food is cooked on two different lines". Why should we care? And in addition, the guests who came after us got their hot dishes much faster than we did. One last thing, this is particularly true of the tallest waitress, she had a look on her face that said "I don't give a shit. I'm tired and I hate my job." Is that professional?

Google
Chez Chili offers an exceptional dining experience with its authentic Sichuan cuisine, which has become my all-time favorite. The restaurant delivers on its promise of bold flavors and traditional dishes that capture the essence of Sichuan cuisine perfectly. From the aromatic spices to the mouth-numbing heat of dishes like mapo tofu and spicy garlic eggplant, each bite is a delight. The ambiance is cozy and welcoming, complementing the flavorful meals. Whether you’re a fan of spicy food or seeking an authentic taste of Sichuan, Chez Chili delivers an unforgettable dining experience.

Yelp
Respectable and authentic place in the heart of Chinatown. Understandably prices are higher and it gets busy. Food was quite good and portions generous. sizzling beef was a little ginger heavy and missing that wok flavor but still tasty. Food was timed strangely and some dishes didn't come out until much later when a couple others were near finished.

Yelp
From New York, so I was raised on Chinese food... this place served the best General Taos I've ever had! Paired with white rice it was magical LOL. My husband was shocked, he's just started to get into Chinese food and this was a top moment for him. He also had the cumin lamb, which he enjoyed. But the star was the General Taos. Trust me, get a portion , it's so worth it! No wait time and staff were super attentive and nice. Would deff return if we were in the area again. Low-key place underground, clean as well. Worth the money.

Yelp
So glad we were able to get a table last minute for a party of 9 on Thursday night! Loved everything we ordered and so many great vegetarian options! We got the veggie noodles, spicy eggplant, veg fried rice, ma po tofu! Wish we had the spicy lotus as well! Also the pineapple soju was yummy too! The place is packed with great service, delivery a very loud, active fast paced restaurant with amazing food!
google avatar

Perry B.

Yelp
Don't let the underground restaurant entrance fool you, this place is a Chinatown gem. My significant other and I dream of this place when we're not in Monreal. The service is quick and efficient. The food is flavorful. We order the shrimp fried rice and the Sichuan style chicken. The chicken is crispy and flavorful. The veggies (peppers and onions) are a nice touch and nothing short of amazing. The shrimp fried rice is a generous portion with almost a shrimp in each bite.

Yelp
Small'sh restaurant in a basement in Chinatown, featuring Szechuan dishes. We tried the hand pulled noodles, tasty yet could have been spicier. Also tried a combo of eggplant, green beans and ground pork, so flavorful. The spiciest order we had was the Piquante Poulet, subtle yet fantastic. If you're looking for something more than typical Chinese food found in the US, give this place a try.

Yelp
If you're a local, this place will satisfy your Chinese cravings. If you're a non-Asian tourist, this place will give you a glimpse into the Chinese culture/life of Chinatown Montreal. If you're an Asian tourist, this will taste like your Mom's home-cooked food and you will see what other Asians who live in Montreal eat. I also saw many Caucasians/locals at this restaurant during lunch hour. Lobster poutine was interesting- fried lobster over a bed of fries...very heavy, filling, and delicious.
google avatar

Jonathon R.

Yelp
Good take on classic Szechuan dishes for a good price. Got the napo tofu, boiled fish, and spicy eggplant and was very satisfied
google avatar

Winnie C.

Yelp
Located in Chinatown, this Chinese restaurant specializes in Sichuan food (the name is self-explanatory). We ordered boiled fish in chili and eggplant fried with potatoes (di san xian) and asked for light in oil, salt and sugar). The food turned out to be not oily and salty yet still had decent flavors. Service was quick.
google avatar

Adil B.

Yelp
Pretty good Chinese food. We ordered: 1. Stir fried beef with ginger on sizzling iron plate 2. Stir fried beef with broccoli Loved the service and atmosphere was amazing. Recommend this place to everyone.
google avatar

Casper L.

Yelp
Tastes good! That's all I need to say honestly. I wish I could post a meme lol Chicken mushroom 10/10 Fried pork slice 10/10 Eggplant with pork 10/10 Super delicious! We were eating like a hurricane. Served relatively fast and the food doesn't look like pre made at all.

Yelp
google avatar

Matthew S.

Yelp
Did you really think all I would eat in Montreal would just be poutine? I had to try something else. Since my trip to Vancouver, I had to see if the Asian cuisine would be just as good as it was there. Yes it is. Great portions, good prices, exceptional flavor, all without sacrificing what makes it all special. The friendly service helped as well. Every stop was pulled to ensure I had a good meal. They even made smart suggestions for what noodle type to order. There was no judgement here from anybody, and that made the experience even better. Try getting something like that in the United States without all those fuss and feathers.
google avatar

Yelp
The thing to get here is the lobster. $65 for a single lobster, $120 for two lobsters (CAD). I love the fried version with a spicy sauce on a bed of fries. I really like that they give you gloves when you order this so you can eat without getting sauce all over your fingers trying to pry open the lobsters. Also tried the spicy cabbage dish for vegetables - this dish is good anywhere, delicious cabbage stir fry with a savory and spicy sauce. Stir fried noodles with beef - noodles were very thin and overall the meat wasn't too impressive either. Wouldn't recommend this. The wait can get long on the weekends, 20 min or more but I think it's worth it. It's a very popular location. The thing is that no one acknowledges you to ask you how big your party is, how much you might have to wait until you're the very next person to go and they have tables ready. The lack of communication be quite frustrating. Service is pretty quick and easy for how busy they typically are. Payment happens at the table - Montreal has 2 different taxes if you're not from here; it's not an included gratuity. It's an basement restaurant but well lit and has a clean bare bones ambiance.

Yelp
We were looking for good spicy Szechuan food while walking around Chinatown in Montreal. Waited on-line to go to the packed downstairs restaurant which looks underwhelming and very bare bones. Service is quick and efficient but still friendly. We ordered Hot & Sour Soup (large enough for 2-4 people), Mapo Tofu and a spicy Chinese eggplant dish. The food and the spiciness did not disappoint!!! Just what we needed on a cold winter's night in Montreal!!
google avatar

Grethel M.

Yelp
Food was Great! A lot of flavor The service was excellent! They serve you within minutes. They're very friendly, always smiling The ambiance is very pleasant and comfortable.

Yelp
Honest to God, the best Chinese food we've ever had. Wait was a bit long and service a tad chaotic, but the food was stellar. We visited Montreal a year ago and late one night this was the only place open when we wanted takeout. We were so impressed. This year during our trip we decided to sit down and try some other dishes, and we were so impressed. 10/10.
google avatar

Regina L.

Yelp
I'm not even kidding, this is probably one of the best Chinese restaurants I've ever been to! Everything was so good, and the eggplant dish really stood out, it's one of my absolute favorites, but everything we ordered was nothing short of amazing! The vibe inside was really nice too. I'm definitely coming back!
google avatar

Yelp
This is my to go place for vegetarian ready to go hot pot. Amazing flavour and generous portions. Make sure to ask for fresh rice. One time they messed up our order and gave us a full refund no question asked. Excellent personal customer service
google avatar

Mag T.

Yelp
PHENOMENAL! Got the D19 add tofu and it did not disappoint. Rice is not included but you can add it. Went at noon on a weekday and there was no line. All the dishes looked amazing cant wait to go back.

Carrie R.

Yelp
Came here due to the good reviews however upon getting there and seated within 5minutes, took 20min to have anyone come to our table to get an order. Then took another 40min for one of our food to arrive to the table ...giving 2 stars only for the fact that she said her food was good flavor. Then another 20min , yes, 1hr and 20min for my food to arrive (chicken tao only). When I asked for to-go box for my food because we were tired and ready to go at almost 9pm, found out they charged for a to-go box for my food!!!! Absolutely NOT worth the wait. Plenty of other places around to spend your time at!

Yelp
We stopped here for lunch after doing the Hop On Hop Off tour in Montreal and was walking through the China Town district . We wanted to sit down to eat and have a beer and glass of wine . What a gem that you could easily miss ! The service was great and the food was amazing and there was so much of it !
google avatar

Kim O.

Yelp
There is a reason for the waiting line that's out the door. This food is phenomenal. My husband and our friend ordered the Lobster Volcano which was 2 lobsters atop of rice, fries, and gravy. They loved it and the dish looked very impressing when it arrived to our table! I personally ordered the short ribs with rice and our other friend ordered a noodle dish. We were all pleasantly satisfied by the amount of food and quality. It's a small room, yet very busy. It appears there are many regulars of this place as we saw waitresses greeting them and welcoming them back. I would certainly come here again on our next trip back!
google avatar

Eden L.

Yelp
I have been a regular customer during the Covid time. I usually have takeout. I am constantly satisfied with the food and packaging. My favourite dishes are the eggplant and many other dishes. They are authentic Chinese food. Must try.
google avatar

Jacob T.

Yelp
This restaurant was easy to miss but don't make that mistake! The food came out quickly and was stupendous! All of my family's food was terrific and the servers were very attentive. Definitely do not miss it!
google avatar

Adrinee A.

Yelp
For a busy small establishment, they were able to seat us and take our order quickly. The food came out fairly soon after without delay and was delicious. We prefer no to mildly spicy dishes and they were able to accommodate the level of spiciness we requested. I will note that it was on the saltier side but still very flavorful and delicious. Overall it was a great experience which I would recommend and would indeed frequent if I lived in Montréal.
google avatar

Yelp
Hidden gem. Great quality and delicious food. Super nice waitstaff. It feels like you're at a family members house.
google avatar

Kathy C.

Yelp
Just see the picture - spicy fish fillet (Fei Teng Yu). I asked the waitress if there is one more step to finish the cooking and she said no this is what it supposed to be done. I never ate white spicy fish fillet and It does not look like the picture on their website at all.
google avatar

Yelp
A really great busy place located one floor down from street level. Specializing in Szechuan cuisine you can find many delicious spicy dishes here. What you cannot finish you can take with you. Service is very fast and attentive. They serve beer and wine!
google avatar

Melanie H.

Yelp
Under rated Chinese food. Very authentic. I went to Hong Kong three times and the food taste like I'm at part of China and having dinner there. People stay there pretty long so plan your visit. Call ahead.

Josh H.

Yelp
Amazing food! Portions are generous and food is delicious. Some dishes maybe a little too salty. Service is good - restaurant was very busy but still took orders and delivered food in timely manner. Tile floor was extremely slippery like it had a coating of grease on it...could likely use a deep clean. Staff and guests seemed to be slipping everywhere lol. Nothing to look at but worth a visit for the food.
google avatar

Angela T.

Yelp
Very good Chinese- took out and it was nice and fresh, Enjoyed pork dumplings Salt and pepper shrimp S and p tofu Fried rice Caramel chicken General tso chicken Liked everything - big portions too Would return!
google avatar

Priya S.

Yelp
Excellent food, minimal ambience. We waited about thirty minutes for a table on a weeknight in the summer. Once you order, though, the food comes quickly! We had pickled cucumbers, spicy eggplant, salt and pepper prawns, and fried rice. The eggplant and cucumber were our faves!
google avatar

Rabbiya A.

Yelp
We ordered Stir Fried Beef Cumin & Sichuan Style Bone-In Chicken. The quality of ingredients was excellent & fresh! The beef was chewy & slightly bland. We liked the Sichuan Chicken better as the meat was tender and had more flavour. It wasn't spicy but definitely had a kick to it! Would definitely try other items from the menu in the future & order the Chicken again!
google avatar

Jimmy H.

Yelp
Whoa they got some real solid quality Northern Chinese food. Haven't had something so dare good since moving to NE from CA! Made my tummy feel extra happy from the yummy homie!

Parveer C.

Yelp
Food was pretty good. Ordered the General Tso Chicken, Boiled Fish in Hot Chili Sauce, Chicken noodles, Hot and Spicy Soup, Veg Fried Rice. The service wasn't the best but was good. It took them a time to give us water and menus after a reminder. They were all nice, and helped us with one of our person's allergy.
google avatar

Matt B.

Yelp
I stopped in for lunch on a Monday. They have a sizeable vegetable and tofu selection, so I ordered their tofu and mixed veggies with spicy sauce ($13 plus tax), with a side of steamed rice ($2 plus tax). The food came out in about 15 minutes. Large portion of deep fried tofu, plenty of veggies but not the most interesting ones (would've been nice to have some greens, like broccoli, bok choy, gai lan, etc.), and a decent gently spicy, salty soy sauce. Not the most interesting flavours but it was tasty enough. Didn't strike me as particularly Szechuan in authenticity. Decent spot.
google avatar

Burj S.

Yelp
Came here with the family after reading the YELP reviews and all I can say is that if you love spicy food this is absolutely the place you should try. This is a quaint little place in the basement area very clean and neat appearing. Even though we arrived late in the evening the staff welcomed us warmly. On reviewing the menu I realized that we were in a really authentic Szechuan restaurant. We ordered my favorite dish the Ma Pao tofu and along with that we had the Cumin Chicken and the Spicy Chili Shrimp along with a large bowl of steamed rice. I must admit that I seem to have enjoyed the meal the most because I love spicy food but the rest of the family ate lightly...... we did order everything to be moderately spicy and I wouldn't recommend anything above that for the average Joe. I will definitely be back when in Montreal again, for those of us fellow YELPERS looking for an authentic Szechuan place I would highly recommend you try this joint out.

Domenico F.

Yelp
Good food quick service rowdy ambiance. This may be my new favourite place in Chinatown.
google avatar

Xue L.

Yelp
If you like chinese food, especially spicy food, this is definitely a good place for that. We had the sweet and sour fish as well as the spicy hot pot. They were both delicious. The fish was crunchy enough without being too oily. The spicy pot had a variety of different ingredients inside. The service is quick and the waitresses are very kind and helpful. My only issue is the price. For 2 dish and a bowl of rice, it was almost 60$ after tax and tips. However, it's definitely one of my fave places in chinatown.

Geoff G.

Yelp
Excellent Sichuan cuisine. Fish fillet in chili oil, mapo tofu with pork, and stir fried mixed vegetables was the perfect meal for two. Best meal in Montreal and will crave it daily from 300 miles away

S. F.

Yelp
There was a long waiting on a Saturday dinner, but the staff was very courteous and the food was nice, so it's worth the waiting. My daughter especially liked the "three cups chicken", and I liked the "vermicelli with ground pork" dish.
google avatar

Yelp
This restaurant in Montreal's Chinatown was close to our hotel and we ended up here twice. It's located in the basement level. The Chinatown in Montreal cannot be compared to the ones we have been to in NYC, SFO , LA etc.. This is much smaller, but seems to have a couple of decent dim sum, dumpling and regular restaurants. What I liked about Chez Chili was that it was clean and food was very tasty and reasonably priced. We could customize our meals. We like eating vegetables as much as we love our meats, so to add veggies to a dish ( if possible) was great for a couple of extra $$. We had the beef fried rice, pan fried pork dumplings, boiled fish with chili, cauliflower stir fry with pork and the fried banana ice cream the first time. Every item was great, but the fish and dessert stood out. Plenty of leftovers. The second time we ordered stir fry seafood with extra veggies, chicken fried rice & pork dumplings. Everything was delicious again! Must visit on a night you don't want to eat fancy!

Dave S.

Yelp
Came up to Montreal for F1 weekend. Stayed at hotel in Chinatown. Ended up eating here all 3 nights. The food is excellent, the staff is friendly and attentive. You can see owner and staff have a lot of pride in quality of dining experience. Everything is super clean and service efficient.

Yelp
We had high hopes here. We often eat Szechuan and thought we'd try this place out. We ordered the following dishes in Mandarin. The waitress spoke mostly Mandarin. Spicy fish in Szechuan sauce: This is usually one of my favorite dishes when I go to Szechuan restaurants so I am quite familiar with this dish. The dish came out suspiciously quickly. It was served in a Pyrex-like Tupperware container often seen and used in baking. The flavor was bland. Not enough chili. Barely any flavor. The quantity was decent for the price. I would not recommend this dish. Spicy chicken: This is usually my second favorite Szechuan dish. This chicken must have been lost in meat tenderizer for the past week. I literally double checked at least 5 times to see that this was chicken. It had no texture at all. Almost like eating firm tofu. It had very little flavor. They didn't use dried chilis like the dish typically calls for. They added carrots, which is not traditionally added to this dish. It was so bad, we couldn't eat more then 15% of it. My daughter who's 8 months old could eat the chicken. To me this means the chicken had the texture of baby food and was about as spicy. Tea tree mushrooms in casserole: This was decent. Pretty unique and if I'm ever feeling self-harmish and want to go back to this restaurant, this is likely what I'd order. The service: The restaurant was full. There was only a single waitress to seat people, serve people, take orders, and clean tables. We waited forever. It's not her fault. It's the restaurants fault. The tea: The tea was laughable. I included a photo of our tea. It had like 4 tea leaves in the entire teapot. Even after I let it soak for 30 minutes it tasted too dilute. It tasted like warm tap water with a hint of tea. The photo will explain. The rice: Good rice. Not over cooked. They charged over $4 for a bowl. Overall a terrible experience. Skip this restaurant at all costs.
google avatar

Connie L.

Yelp
The signature of this place is their spicy boiled fish which was actually really good and comes with generous portion. We also tried their dry pot mushroom dish, surprised by how good it tasted. I'd definitely recommend these two for now. Will go back to try other dishes soon. Location wise it is located in a basement. Generally quiet in the restaurant. If you are looking for somewhere romantic or scenic, this won't be the place for you. Food: 4.5/5, service:4/5, ambient:2/5

Yelp
Great Chinese food. Plus, they have Dongbei food, which is not common to find (in USA, at least). My sister and I got Szechuan string beans (always an excellent dish, and this restaurant is no exception), Szechuan salt and pepper chicken (first time trying this dish and it was good. Chicken was crispy and chewy), and Dongbei eggplant with pepper and pork (first Dongbei dish for me, and it was pretty good. Light and mildly-tasting. Apparently, Dongbei foods are lighter and sweeter than other types of Chinese food). We got a medium bowl of rice, which was huge, big enough to feed a family of 4. Probably should have ordered a small bowl, which would be sufficient for 2 people, but we were starving, so no complaining there :) Cons: - You have to pay separately for rice (really?) - Pretty pricey - our bill totaled $42 (in US dollars. It was over $50 in Canadian dollars) for 3 dishes. You can find cheaper and equally tasty dinner elsewhere. I come from D.C. in USA, and it's an expensive city, but Rockville (close to DC) has great and cheaper foods than this place.

Yelp
Went here with family. We took the combo because we were a lot. Place is clean. Good ambiance. Nice staff. Good food. Big serving as usual. Tasty food! Yum!

Yelp
I decided to try something different... And while I generally want to try lots of new restaurants, it seems of late, it's more miss than hit. It's a new place at the corner of la gauchetiere and clark, in chinatown, it's a basement place so you have to walk down. The decor is very modern chinese zen, with chinese cities written on the wall in caligraphy, a nice touch. We ordered hot and sour soup, tofu family style and some stewed pork belly. I've been dying to order pork belly for a long while, and you don't often see it on the menu. The taste overall is bland to too salty. The soup was a bit liquidy, so there was a problem with every dish, don't know if it's an off day with the chef but it was not spectacular. The pork belly was a bit lukewarm, I would have preferred it more hot, and the taste was somewhat bland, I think it could have use more caramelization and more salt. The sauce for the tofu was a bit too salty, even with rice it was hard to take. The soup had good taste and flavour, but needed to be thickened a bit...however the bowl was huge and cost only 8$, and it could easily feed 6-8 ppl. Like the soup, bring the soup. :)

Yelp
Six stars for hand pulled noodles, perfectly fresh veggies and delicious chow fun. Service matches the food -- efficient and courteous as well as responsive. Ambience? Not so much unless you count wonderful smells and happy diners. Also vegan friendly which for me is essential. Well done Chez Chili!
