The Best Weekday Breakfasts in Montreal | Eater Montreal

"Easygoing Chez José has long been a favourite for Plateau residents to grab a breakfast sandwich (in a traditional Portuguese bun) and a refreshing fruit-packed smoothie. Otherwise, expect a menu of filling omelettes and Portuguese-inspired plates that pile fried eggs with tasty chouriço. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are also available." - Holly Tousignant

The Best Restaurants of Montreal’s Plateau | Eater Montreal

"Open for just over a quarter-century, this iconic Duluth Avenue café serves breakfasts and lunches that are worth the visit. Its Portuguese breakfast with fried eggs and chorizo, saucy sandwiches stuffed with omelette, and tomato-based seafood soup are go-tos, but its vegan options, sweets, and smoothies are great, too." - Joel Balsam

So, we biked around the super pretty Ave Duluth and stumbled upon this place. It's got cool graffiti outside, but inside it's all vintage vibes with stuff from like, 50 years ago. We got a Mexican crepe, an egg sandwich, and a lentil burrito. I even told the server it was the best brunch we've had in Montreal! The owner was super nice and told us all about the cafe's history. Seriously, you gotta check it out next time you're on Duluth street.

Tucked away on Duluth, Café Chez José feels like a little oasis of joy. The vibe is eclectic and cozy, filled with character and color. The food? Humble, honest, and surprisingly delightful. It’s the kind of place where every bite feels like it was made with care. Even though the hostess was running around non-stop, she never lost her grace. A beautiful place to slow down, eat well, and feel the soul of avenue Duluth.

Google
Really cool vibe and cute decor. Great coffee and food. I ordered the Mexican crepe and flavour wise it was delicious but it was far too salty for me that I struggled to finish it. The Portuguese breakfast that my friend got was also good but nothing spectacular. On the weekend there was a short wait for late morning brunch but that was expected so no complaints. Overall it was quite expensive for a casual brunch. Their pastel de natas are to die for tho!

Google
I truly enjoyed my experience here. Had a small bite late in the afternoon and was craving for some sweet treat. I had their pastel de nata and a cup of latte, which were s great pairing. I find the place very artsy and cozy, and the staff is very friendly. Overall, it's a wonderful place to be.

Google
This place has the most legit brunch vibe. Perfect for some gab time with friends. Food is fresh and delicious. Reasonable quantity for the price. However the booking procedure can throw you off. We have to scan a qr code to book a table which will enter us in to the queue. But the code is only accessible at the door of the cafe. It will be more convinient to have it on their website.

Google
I love this place 🥰 we stopped by for brunch, i just had a drink and the pastei, which is to die for!! I think my friends each got the portugese breakfast plate, i tried it and i wished i was hungry enough to eat more but i wasnt that day. i brought their pasteis with me on the plane for my flight the next morning, and shared them that weekend with my family. I airfried them for 5 mins at 350 and they were just as delicious as i remembered them in montreal :) i will definitely come back here next time im in town 🥰

AMAZING food and vibe, makes you feel you’re in Portugal! The chicken is out of this world, staff incredibly welcoming and kind, a must!

Google
I had a wonderful experience at Chez Jose Cafe! The cozy atmosphere, friendly staff, and fresh, delicious food made it a perfect spot to unwind. Their menu offers a great variety of options, including vegetarian and healthy choices, which was exactly what I was looking for. The coffee was also on point, rich and flavorful. Plus, the service was fast despite it being a busy time. Overall, Chez Jose is a gem! Whether you’re looking for a quick bite, a relaxed brunch, or just a good cup of coffee, this place won’t disappoint.

Yelp
Great find. Fresh food with a great variety of tasty choices! Crepe was delicious (very cheesy) and the seafood soup. Was hoping to try their gazpacho, but their soups rotate. Service was great and friendly. Funky cute interior vibe! We sat outside as it was a nice day and the street is a nice vibe. Highly recommend!

Yelp
A very small and unassuming cafe tucked in Mont Royal and off the main St Laurent blvd, it is an extremely tight and small place with tables literally standing next to each other. They also have an outdoor space, but because it was a rainy and cold day in Montreal, inside tables were only available. We got there still relatively early around 9am, but still had to wait about 15 minutes for our table, as the cafe was already packed! We ordered the Portuguese breakfast, the classic and I got the vegetarian option. Both were SO delicious! The vegetarian had so much veggies and both came with over-easy eggs. We also ordered the matcha latte and the cappuccino and a homemade fresh juice. To end the lovely and healthy breakfast, we got two Pasteis de nata, which I was sad to hear it was not homemade, however was one of the best, as they served it warm! Must always get Pasteis De nata warm. Overally, great breakfast cafe, lines can be long, arrive early and be Ok with sitting next to other guests.

Yelp
If you're looking for a Portuguese-styled breakfast, then Chez José is for you. The interior is cosy with half a dozen tables, however, in the summer they triple in space due to the larger outdoor seating option. I went with the Portuguese Omelette and my friend ordered the Portuguese breakfast. My omelette came with a side of salad and a well buttered toasted bun. While the omelette portion was huge--I had enough left over for lunch the next day, the flavor was a bit indistinct. It had cheese, chorizo, bell peppers, etc. but none of them really stood out. The salad was fresh with a thick creamy dressing. I ordered a matcha latte but found that their matcha was of inferior quality to what I usually drink. The Portuguese breakfast plate was basically all the same ingredients that were in my omelette but served on the side of two fried eggs. Both portions were generous! We went quite early on a Saturday and service was prompt. In the summer, the windows are all open so if it's a bit of a cooler day you might want to bring an extra layer.

Yelp
Wow, this was such a cute lunch spot, and all the food was amazing! We started off with some of the smoothies, which were all tasty but honestly nothing special :/ I ordered a chicken sandwich, which was super flavorful and the bread was SO GOOD! The hot sauce was also super flavorful and complimented the sandwich nicely. For dessert, we got the egg tarts, which were also delicious. We also got some egg tarts to go, and I will say they are SO much better cold/refrigerated. This is a solid lunch spot, and the egg tarts are a must if you do go here! My only complaints were that we were told our table would be ready in 5-10 minutes, but it ended up being closer to 20 minutes. And our smoothies were supposed to be discounted since we ordered them with our meal, but we didn't see that reflected in the bill (we were in a bit of a hurry and it was too busy to ask for this to be fixed).

Yelp
Chez Jose is a popular, intimate Brazilian place in the heart of Montreal. On a Saturday morning it is very busy: there was a 30-minute wait, but the food was well worth it! My breakfast was scrumptious. I also had a little pastel de Nata on the side: yum. It was so creamy! What a great place to get breakfast!
google avatar

Yelp
Food- plenty of good options that were tasty as hell! Service- the owners were some of the kindest and attentive people I have ever had the privilege of meeting. They were so welcoming and made the experience all the better. Ambiance- super cute and homey inside. Intimate space with very few tables, but worth it! 10/10

Yelp
Amazing ambiance in the decor. Got the Portuguese breakfast which was a perfect combination of refreshing, umami, salty and neutral flavours. Sevice was super sweet too

Yelp
My roommate and I are fed and happy! Seriously bangin. Also, their hot sauce is really good I would eat it with a spoon :D They say to trust your waiter and we were not disappointed with his recommendation of the breakysammy. Thank you #lifeisgood

Yelp
Best breakfast during my stay in Montreal! I ordered the Omelette Sandwich with Chorizo, Vegan Breakfast Plate with a side of salad and toasted Portuguese Bread, Portuguese Natas, Americano, and Cappuccino. Everything was flavored generously and so delicious. The sandwich was the best dish out of everything and one of their most popular items. It was a very balanced meal with the vegetables and meat. The coffee paired perfectly with the Natas as well. The interior is pretty small but charming and cozy. The staff are also extremely friendly. It's in a great area, so there's other cool things to check out around it as well. Overall, it felt like an authentic experience.

Yelp
This place is Haight-Ashbury hippie dippy fun funky with fantastic fresh f'avour food that totally delivers. Super affordable, satisfying and a lovely part of town to dine esp in warm months on pedestrian friendly Duluth St.

Yelp
My go to place for vegan brunch where they're not afraid to use tofu, and that's from a Portuguese chef! I'm so grateful and I also love their coffee and vegan desserts: I recommend the maple cake.

Yelp
Absolutely the best!! I literally cannot say enough about the food (there are 5 of us and we tried almost everything from their smoothies, coffees, main dishes and sandwiches, and even their classic dessert), the cutest atmosphere, and cannot forget our wonderful waitress who at the very beginning overheard us speaking Russian and instantly switched to Russian. Yes, she could speak to my mom and me in Russian, my kids and my husband in English, and everybody else in French. Cannot recommend it more! We will be back!

Yelp
Lovely, quirky spot in the plateau. Small so be patient but well worth the wait. Service attentive but not intrusive. Decor is colorful, kitschy and full of greenery. Interesting menu, something different than one more version of eggs Benedict!!! Seasoning on point, good portions, will definitely come back:) Next visit, I plan to try the fish stew which looked amazing.

Yelp
Got a dirty chai latte and the breakfast sandwich - everything was delicious. The atmosphere is cozy and the service was awesome. Really kind, friendly staff! Would absolutely return.

Yelp
Went to this place for the first time yesterday for a friend's see-off brunch before he heads to France. None of us tried this place before and our soon-to-be-France-bound friend wanted to try out this place before he left Montreal. We are happy that Chez Jose didn't disappoint us! The place was super nice and they were super accommodating. We also took our dog Pico with us and they also provided him water in dog-specific bowl. This just shows how well prepared they are. There were other dogs on the terrace and all the owners were enjoying their meals while the dogs were just chilling/mingling with each other. The portion size is really generous and the all the veggies were super fresh. The food was really really tasty and we will definitely be back. The only small disappointment was the latte. I think it was overextracted and thus was bitter.

Yelp
After not being able to visit Montreal due to covid for 2 years, we finally made our way back for a short trip and the first place that we visited was Chez Jose! The sandwiches and smoothies haven't changed here. I have been dreaming of this sandwich for so long, and I finally got to eat it again. I wasn't disappointed, and I'll be back again soon!

Yelp
I love everything about Chez Jose. My favorites are the Déjeuner végétalien , and the seafood soup, but everything I've had there has been very good. The coffee is great too, as is the service and ambiance ..I like their new terrace on the street very much as well.

Yelp
Wow, that was disappointing. A nasty experience. The thing is that this review has nothing to do with the food, since I couldn't try it. This is about the disgraceful service at Chez José. I got there with two of my friends on a Sunday for brunch. There were already two tables on the waiting list, but the host told me it was a 15-20-minute wait. Hence, we thought it should be ok to wait. Two other groups of 2 and 3 arrived after us and demanded to be put on the waiting list. 20 minutes went by, and people kept coming out of the restaurant, but no tables were assigned. Then, a group of 6 who had been just waiting for 5 minutes got a table. Strike 1. Surprised and a bit annoyed, I approached the host to ask her why this was happening. With a smile she answered that my friends and I were the next on the list, but it was easier for them to assign a table for 6. Strike 2. Another 30 minutes under the sun went by. We were starving, (getting hangry here glare) but no one was called. Rarely one of the hosts came out to tell us what we already knew: "You are next on the list, as soon as a table is available". Strike 3. We decided to leave since not even a cup of coffee, or a glass of water was offered to make the wait more bearable. No options were offered by the staff. We were really hungry and starting to feel weak. It was awful that they did not show any interest in apologizing for the misfortunate situation. To who is reading this, just think that another two groups were still waiting after us. My thoughts. No one deserves to be treated like this. First, don't lie to your costumers if the wait will take for longer. Second, if various groups are already waiting for over 20 minutes, do not offer a table to a larger group because it makes things "easier". Not only was it disrespectful, but it displayed a lack of professionalism and touch from the staff. I suggest that if you see a line of people here ask the food to to-go, because the kitchen seems to be quick, but the staff not so much. I am sorry I have to disagree about how amazing this place is, because our experience was the entire opposite.

Yelp
Great affordable Portuguese style all day breakfast, the chorrito dishes are so good, and fresh salad ingredients. Cash only. Staff is warm and friendly always, and it's in a perfect location for people watching on Duluth. Eclectic intimate atmosphere. Can't recommend enough.

Yelp
The Portuguese pastries were amazing. The Mexican omelet was okay. The service is great here ! I would come back to try something different.

Yelp
When I went to Chez José I was really hungry, which turned out to be my first mistake. This place seems more like a "light brunch" spot, and one should definitely not go here if they have a big appetite... after looking through the menu I asked the waitress which is more filling, the vegan burrito or the sandwich and she said "definitely the burrito" so I followed her advice. Huge mistake. The burrito was about the size of a wrap, and was the smallest burrito I've ever seen. The burrito was fine, but not amazing-- definitely try it with hot sauce. It was served with a salad that included chick peas, and an array of beans covered in a creamy dill sauce... not my favorite... so I ended up just eating the tiny burrito and I was still hungry afterwards of course. The sandwich looks way more filling from the other photos on yelp so if I go back I'll try that instead. Also it was pretty annoying that I had to keep asking my waitress for more water despite being the only people in the small restaurant. Also, this is a cash only restaurant.

Cathy J.

Yelp
Awesome brunch place on Duluth with deliciously fresh food, including vegan options. Beautifully muraled on the outside, green, airy, and cozy on the inside. I loved everything about my tofu breakfast dish, which was so big it came in 2 separate dishes. The salad and potatoes were especially amazing on opposite sides of the culinary spectrum: the salad was so light and fresh, and the potatoes were hot and spiced to perfection. The hot sauce on each table adds a little extra kick! Cash only

Yelp
My favourite place in the Plateau. Cozy, delicious, reasonable prices, wonderful staff. 10/10 Chai!
google avatar

Yelp
WARNING: CASH ONLY AND THEY WILL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE EXCHANGE RATE TO SWINDLE FOR A HIGHER TIP. Food was delicious but when it came time to pay, ATM wasn't working properly and only in French. Our group paid in US dollars $80 (approximately $60 CAD) for a $79 CAD bill. The waitress then demanded an additional tip since it is not included even though we overpaid. Enjoy your $25 CAD tip-- your pastries were ice cold and had to be reheated.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place accidentally, and left a happier satisfied person. The staff is extremely cordial, they seem joyous to bring their culture to this tiny gem of a restaurant and were willing to alter their dishes a bit based on dietary restrictions. There are over a million cutesy decor accents to look at, I loved the photographs. I almost wanted to take the tuxedo pig and the flamingo statue with me. We ordered the spicy Mexican omelette (I am already day dreaming about this), the Portuguese breakfast (could keep eating this all day everyday) and the Vegan Burrito. We all absolutely loved this place the very instant we entered. It felt like we had transported to a South American diner with all its ethnicity. Brownie points to this place for being pet friendly. Did I mention they have the cutest puppy 'coffee machine guardian'? I highly recommend this place to everyone and would go again for the omelette soon.

Yelp
Everything about our dining experience was great!. Went here for breakfast yesterday. The food was great and the waitstaff was brilliant, friendly and very efficient! Can't wait to visit again on our next trip to Montreal. 5 five stars for neighborhood vibe, food, staff and price.
google avatar

Yelp
Love this place! Amazing food, friendly stuff and gorgeous ambiance. It's a cash only and they do have an atm Machine on premises
google avatar

B P.

Yelp
Very tiny restaurant in what seems to be a residential neighborhood. You will literally rub against other patrons as there is very little space. We were 5 and took half the place. There is only one bathroom and it's more of a closet in which a toilet was dropped. The foods is bar-type, with sandwiches being the primary offer. Not a lot of variety. 5 soups on the menu but only one available. The food was well cooked, but more on the greasy side. There are vegan options though. They are cash only, but there is a ATM machine inside.
google avatar

Pradeep K.

Yelp
My order here is always the same, Churasco sandwich; grilled chicken with avocado and cucumbers; and a Psychedelic smoothie. They take only cash so keep that in mind before heading there, place can get a bit cramped so claustrophobics, you should stay away. I could try other sandwiches and smoothie, but I know the ones I like, so why fix something that ain't broke!
google avatar

Jack M.

Yelp
I didn't even have this place on my hit list bit it happened to work out as a great place to meet an old friend for brunch. Our food took FOREVER to come out. It was kind of absurd. Probably like an hour. But luckily we didn't care because we were catching up. The breakfast burrito was cheap and stocked with delicious fresh ingredients. Combined with hot ham and cheddar cheese, the eggs were perfectly complimented. The burrito had the perfect balance of oozy fattiness and fresh veggies. I don't remember the wrap so it must have been pretty good. I recommend checking this cool little cozy spot out when you're in the Plateau.
google avatar

Vincent V.

Yelp
Met up a friend with a friend for brunch Chez José the other day. Low Key one of the more eccentric places I've been to in a while. My friend lives around the corner and selected this place for the group. I ordered a cappuccino, which was made in the style of a second wave coffee shop, which means a very tall foam, and a light touch with the milk. The smoothies are very delicious tho and if I wasn't such a coffee addict I would have stuck to those. I highly recommend it. I ordered a chouriço and egg dish, which was great. The chouriço was cooked with peppers, onions and potatoes, which allowed the potatoes to soaked up all the goodness from the ingredients, and the egg was spiced up. Cool place overall, the decors is instagram-worthy too.

Yelp
Love, love, love!! My hubby and I stopped in Montreal for one night traveling from Clayton, NY to Bar Harbor, ME. Everything about Chez Josè was just so perfect! The decor, the people, THE FOOD! I had a delicious Vegan Burrito w/ lentils, Parsley and coriander salsa, hummus, beets, carrots and lettuce. Mark had the Déjeuner Portugais- 2 fried eggs, Portuguese chorizo, sautéed potatoes and peppers served with salad and toast. We gave the chef a thumbs up. His response " I cook with passion, intensity and punctuality!"
google avatar

Hannah B.

Yelp
I love everything about this place: the tight and snug space; the everything-is-a-bit-greasy-and-busted decor; the staff; the menu- it all makes me happy inside. It really feels like a family joint: they're family and they treat the neighbourhood like family. The only thing I order/likely will ever order here is the Portuguese breakfast. Thing is, it's everything I want: chorizo, potatoes, heavily buttered toast, a breakie salad, and two over-easy and well seasoned eggs. Perfection. That being said, my partner has had the gamut of vegan options here (which are relatively plentiful!) and his fave is definitely the veggie pâté sandwich. The vegan burrito is also good but a little too modest in size. One thing I'll say is that the place tends to get packed, particularly on summer weekends. Anticipate potentially waiting a moment outside for your table.
google avatar

Madhu K.

Yelp
I visited this place for Sunday brunch. A small cute family run bakery, very colorful with old tables and chairs. There menu is short and crisp. They have the Portuguese breakfast which is served all day. There are sandwiches, and vegan options too. I tried their Orangine smoothie with the marinated chicken breast sandwich. The smoothie was tasty and the sandwich was filling. The place is operated by family and hence you get a perfect service. I also liked to window shop the near by thrift shops :)
google avatar

Smitha R.

Yelp
Such a cool spot. I got the dejeuner vegan bplate and it was a LOT of food but so good that I finished it all. Haha! Everyone was happy with their picks- from the savory crepes, to omelets ( Namaste). Lovely, colorful, chill place. I want to go back to Montreal just to go to Back here!!
google avatar

Ilham K.

Yelp
I loved this place! Breakfast is great and they have a great chai tea. I'm allergic to dairy, so they offer soy milk or almond milk to prepare your drinks, it also, as most places in Canada, offer gluten free options. The ambience is cool and the service is great.
google avatar

Bashard B.

Yelp
Loved the atmosphere and energy of this place. We just went out and picked this place because it was close by the condo that we rented. They have a combo where you can get a breakfast smoothie and a breakfast sandwich for 10 bucks. I got a mango, banana smoothie and a veggie breakfast sandwich. The menu is in French, and the waitresses speak on French, Portuguese, and English so that is convenient.

Yelp
Chez Jose 173 avenue Duluth Est Montréal, QC H2W 1H4 (514) 845-0693 4 stars When I was a student living in Montreal, Chez Jose was my favourite little cafe and pastry shop. It was right around the corner from my boyfriends', so on weekends we'd head on over with bedhead to wake up with the most heavenly 'cafe au lait' and 'pain au chocolat' you've ever tasted. The delicate pastry was always perfectly light, crispy and buttery and the inside chocolate melted in your mouth like a divine communion. We'd hang out at the tables in the funky little shop, and lazily watch the people on Avenue Duluth or study while we ate. It's cash only, which was no problem; as students, we didn't have credit anyway! They have the most incredible guacamole chicken sandwiches here, made with fresh chicken breast and roasted vegetables. These were the only things I ordered on the menu. They became rituals, study treats, weekend getaways and tantalizing Montreal memories.
google avatar

Pierre-Yves B.

Yelp
Nice little place on Rachel. The place is a bit packed but this has some charm. Prices are reasonable for the area but check your bill! We got charged two extra items worth ~$10 for a small bill of 2 people.
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
I've been eating here for years and the prices have been creeping up (from insanely reasonable) but it is still a great deal. And the food is always awesome. I can't speak for the whole menu as I tend to hone in on the churrasco chicken sandwich, the soups, and the occasional savory crepe. The fruit drinks - which I never drink normally anywhere else - are really tasty, not sweet but fruity. They are the best at being what they are.
google avatar

Pema J.

Yelp
I like the vibe here but honestly I wouldn't go back. Got a 9 dollar omelette with runny bits (ew) and an overdressed cheapo salad. Made me feel a bit queasy for the rest of the day. I don't know. Cash only (annoying). Nice staff, good vibe. You want to like it.
google avatar

Courtney M.

Yelp
Love this breakfast spot! Super funky interior decor with real fruit smoothies (no blends of yogurt, milk, ice...or any other thing that has no rightful place in a FRUIT smoothie) I bought baked goods last time I was in Montreal from Chez José and brought them back to Halifax. That's how good the baking is!
google avatar

Glennys E.

Yelp
Will never get enough of this place. I live close by and go often, which is how Chez Jose is meant to be enjoyed - it's very neighbourhoody, kinda like going to a relative's for dinner, complete with Milo the puppy! I bring all my out of town visitors here, sometimes more than once. The food is always delicious, and the prices cannot be beat. Love the chorizo omelette, churassco sandwich, ham and cheese, their soups, the smoothies, and their coffee, and the fruit crepes...I know the menu by heart and I still struggle with what to get every time because it is just that good. The housemade hot sauce is so smoky and tasty we use about half a bottle every time we go in. Don't miss out. As expected for a busy small place with a small kitchen, service can be a bit slow and disorganized at times, especially if you go in a group. While this might frustrate some people, for me it kind of adds to the casual and intimate vibe - but I felt I should be honest for the sake of a review. They recognize this though and are very up front about it and always do their best to accommodate us. If you have the time (and patience, don't be a dick), I would highly highly recommend Chez Jose.
google avatar

Ash S.

Yelp
Accidentally stumbled on this gem! The atmosphere was funky, the food was wonderful and there was a great community feel amongst the guests and staff. We had the veggie salad and an egg dish with spicy chicken - they were able to ensure all the food was gluten free by swapping out some tortillas for Gf bread. The waitress was awesome and even helped us to determine w head parked our car in a safe spot! Don't miss out on this spot!!
google avatar

Lauren H.

Yelp
This place is a neighborhood gem! It's colorful and funky inside, with big windows, and has wonderfully friendly staff. I stopped by just before leaving Montreal to get two veggie omelet sandwiches to go, and the chef created a meal that carried us back to DC feeling happy and warm. He added hummous, which I thought would be weird, but which worked beautifully in the sandwiches. Nice smoothies too.
google avatar

John A.

Yelp
Waitress was terrible, maybe hungover. We walked in, she was disrespectful, we walked out. Place looks pretty dusty/dirty too.
google avatar

Jay R.

Yelp
The food was really good. If you're looking for a tasty and cheap breakfast then this is a solid option. It's a bit far from the metro but definitely worth it. I asked for avocado on the side and never received it, so that was a bummer. My hot chocolate was given to me almost half way into my meal. Those are the only two reasons why I didn't give this place 5 stars. Other than that, it's an amazing option.
google avatar

Kayla S.

Yelp
Food was amazing, service was superb. Prices were great. Would definitely recommend for any occasion!

Yelp
Tiny place but food was so good. Came with a my girlfriends and it was just what I needed that morning. Coffee woke me up and the food was ON point. If I lived in Montreal this would definitely be a place I would frequently visit. Would suggest for groups of 4 or less since the place is on the small side. Definite thumbs up.
